The Declaration of Independence has had two simultaneous lives. One is the life of its ideas, the life that scholars pay the most attention to: a life of fits and starts, surprisingly forgotten in the first years after the Revolution, then returning with a vengeance amid sectional conflict in the 1830s, during the Progressive Era, and again during the Civil Rights Movement.Its second life is as a material document. It is an engrossed parchment rushed away from advancing British troops twice in its life, carried by carriage and train across the United States, tucked away in archives and cellars, displayed in patent offices and libraries, and eventually enshrined in a helium-filled case under carefully controlled conditions.As Michael Auslin argues in National Treasure: How the Declaration of Independence Made America, these two lives cannot be separated. Americans did not merely preserve the Declaration because of what it said. They preserved it because the physical document itself became a national relic—an object that connected generations of Americans to the Revolution and to one another.Michael Auslin is the Payson J. Treat Distinguished Research Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. He is the author of numerous books on American and international history and writes The Pawtomack Packet, a Substack devoted to the history of Washington, D.C.

Heritage Foundation Executive VP Derek Morgan joins Marc Cox to break down the Supreme Court decision that could reshape American government for a generation — and almost nobody is covering it. The overturning of Humphrey's Executor ends 90 years of congressional protection for the unelected bureaucrats embedded in federal agencies, and Derek has the receipts: over 90% of USAID employees donated to Democrats, and 75% of high-earning DC government workers told Rasmussen they would flat-out disobey a lawful presidential order they disagreed with. That is the deep state — and this ruling gives Trump the legal authority to start cleaning it out. Derek and Marc also tear into the birthright citizenship ruling, with Derek citing Justice Alito's extraordinary rebuke that the court has made one of the most serious mistakes in its history, and calling Justice Thomas's 93-page dissent — written in chapters — a monument to principled originalism. On court packing, Derek calls it a naked power grab. On John Roberts, he says the Chief Justice is too worried about what the DC cocktail circuit thinks. And on whether Trump could swap Roberts for Alito as Chief Justice — turns out he can't, but Marc Cox says maybe it's worth testing the waters anyway. They quibbled over the language and the provisions, but in the end America's Founding Fathers produced a 1,320-word document establishing a newborn republic's belief in natural rights and self-governance. Were the founders who debated and ultimately signed the Declaration of Independence true visionaries or merely smart and realpolitik enough to find a new way to express the colonists' longstanding desires for self-governance and liberty? Michael Auslin, a historian and the Hoover Institution's Payson J. The Hoover's History Lab and Center for Revitalizing American Institutions held National Treasure: How the Declaration of Independence Made America, a special book launch with the author, Michael Auslin on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. PT. The inspiring story of the Declaration of Independence —the first to take us from its drafting by Thomas Jefferson to today— charts the many lives of a document that captures the soul of America on the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. An award-winning historian, Michael Auslin takes us from the boarding house in Philadelphia where Jefferson put quill to paper to the Declaration's covert signing and its long, harrowing, and ultimately hallowed afterlife. We follow the parchment as it is hauled out of a soon-to-be-burning Washington in 1814 and see it hidden in a dank cellar, posted in classrooms, printed on handkerchiefs, and used to sell insurance and bundle coal. Through it all, Jefferson's words have inspired implausibly varied causes, from suffragists and civil rights leaders to groups waging war on the US government. As Jefferson had hoped, the principles enshrined in the Declaration became a beacon to the world. But what lessons should we take from it today? Can this statement of ideals in whose name the signers pledged their lives and sacred honor bring a disparate nation together? As we gather to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founders' bold experiment in democracy, Auslin reminds us that this enduring document was not just a call for freedom and equality but an eloquent statement of the principles that bind us together.
