Using first-hand accounts, military analysis, and on-location footage, we explore: How the Rifles came to be What made the Baker Rifle so revolutionary Why their training under men like Sir John Moore changed the game And how they stood firm in the face of overwhelming French assaults This is the real story behind Richard Sharpe's old regiment — not fiction, but fact. These were the battles where the myth began.

In this episode, we are joined by Dr Chantal Kobel (Department of Early Irish, Maynooth University) to chat all about medieval Irish manuscripts (literally documents written by hand) and the various specialists skills and tools needed to read these precious historical sources. From palaeography (the study of old handwriting and writing systems) to codicology (study of the actual books) we learn about how manuscripts were physically made (trigger warning, it gets a little gruesome!), what they feel like, why so few survive, where you can see them for yourselves (online or Royal Irish Academy!), whether some more could be discovered, and whether any were written by women. North Shore Crime Cases was recorded live on October 10, 2024 at Off Cabot in Beverly, Mass. This bonus episode features questions from our audience in an open Q+A setting. Nothing was off limits. Episode: https://www.crimeofthetruestkind.com/post/ep74northshorecasesJoin us for a captivating journey through some of the North Shore of Massachusetts' most perplexing crime cases like that of Susan Taraskiewicz's unsolved murder and the person who found her body, the true gift that Colleen Ritzer, a dedicated math teacher at Danvers High, was to every student she touched, what stories have been told about missing Lynn boy Jesus de la Cruz, the impact of The Station Nightclub Fire, Wenham dermotologist, Richard Sharpe's history of family violence, the disappearance of Maura Murray 20 years ago and how searching for missing people has changed during that time, the tragic fate of Beryl Atherton, and the disturbing story of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, who was found dismembered along the Merrimack River in November 2016. A classmate from Lawrence High School was convicted in his case. We emphasize the essential role of community involvement in keeping these people and their stories alive, to push for justice for others like them by taking action to shed light on unresolved crimes and to advocate of the missing and murdered. The true crime genre carries with it a weighty responsibility and consideration must be paid to the families of crime victims. The converstation does not shy away from the ethical considerations involved, touching on the importance of compassion and respect when recounting real lives with the mission of empathetic storytelling. Host Anngelle Wood reaffirms her commitment to treating these stories with empathy and care. It's mini-series time! Come with us on a journey as we dive into the series that was designed in a lab deep under London to appeal directly to one Matthew J. Conrad: "Sharpe". "Sharpe" was a TV show that ran from 1993 until 2008 for a grand total of 16 episodes. The hitch is that each episode is 2 hours long! So this is a 16 movie long series that the Brits called a "TV Show". TV makes no sense over there. ANYWAY, we follow our hero Richard Sharpe (played by Sean Bean at his absolute swarthiest) as he makes his way through the ranks of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars (like we said, designed in a lab for Matt Conrad). The first up in our adventure is "Sharpe's Rifles", adapted from the novel of the same name. We meet Richard and the rest of the Chosen Men. They fight, they fight, and well... they also fight. Secrets are kept secret, French people get shot, Spanish women are seduced, and a Rothschild dresses up as a Methodist woman. It's a trip. Join Matt and Connor as they sit down to discuss the first step of their great adventure together. After this, there are only 15 more to go! There are times when you need to give your brain a bit of a break, that's when comfort shows come in handy! Movies and TV shows you can watch again and again- you can appreciate them every time and they don't get old. The tension never gets too much for you because you already know what's going to happen. You can just relax and enjoy the familiar story, revelling in the company of characters you know and visiting their world once more. They're great for creating to as well because you don't have to worry about missing anything important. I have quite a lot on my list. Often it's older stuff but there are newer things as well. Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, Romney and Michelle's High School Reunion, The Life Aquatic with Steve Siszou, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, Conan the Barbarian, The Office (US version), Parks and Rec, the Richard Sharpe series, The New Girl, The Duellists, and much more. For Banes it was things like Friday the 13th part 2, Back to the Future 2, Terminator 2 and more. This is a great season for comfort shows, especially the Christmas themed ones. What are your fave comfort shows and why? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to This theme is unsettling, creepy, on an angle… off-putting. It's a journey into a strange dimension. The lights are dim and won't turn to full brightness, it's grey and shadows abound, what are the strange sparkles in the darkness? A heavily splintered dark wooden door slams shut. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 17th 2022 The subject of tonight's conversation. SHARPE, based upon the novels by Bernard Cornwell, set during the Napoleonic Wars, and starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, which was one of those long format film series that appeared on ITV for sixteen feature-length stories across about fifteen years from 1993 to 2008 that somehow I was never particularly drawn to, and so I never actually saw one. Luckily, our regular contributor and History Woman LISA PARKER, from the ROUND THE ARCHIVES podcast, was on hand to guide me towards seeing its greatness, and I hope that you'll agree with me that her enthusiasm for the show is infectious and truly makes for a fascinating hour as we discuss what turns out to be a rather interesting sounding series of TV films, some of which was filmed in the Crimea, and that now much-troubled country of Ukraine, which just goes to show that, unfortunately, two hundred years later, when it comes to people disputing the ownership of pieces of land in many ways little has really changed. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Dr. Richard Sharpe could be described as many things, genius, arrogant, anti-social, successful, cruel. Richard was raised in a highly abusive household. He stereotypically continued the abuse, hitting and tormenting his wife and children. The fact that Richard graduated from medical school, while constantly abusing his family, highlights his complicated genius. Karen Sharpe was Richard's high school sweetheart, she suffered severe abuse for decades. Richard's growing fortune was not enough to keep his demons at bay. Karen Sharpe finally had enough of being abused, she was planning to divorce. That meant Karen would be entitled to half of Richard's successful businesses. Richard couldn't have that and he did the unspeakable, in an ill-conceived murder plot. This episode is sponsored by;Podcorn- a marketplace for podcasters and advertisersHuge thanks to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode. In this week's episode, I discuss four ideas that will help us as men to find the will and the strength to move through life even as we face strife and challenges. Those four ideas are: The will to act - simply put, the willingness and the ability to take action even when we are afraid of the outcomes; Understanding the difference between risk and uncertainty - the two concepts are NOT the same and one must understand clearly the difference between the two in order to prosper under certain regimes; Taking Extreme Ownership of yourself and your actions - don't ever hide or cower behind anyone or anything to avoid responsibility for your actions, but own them and their consequences; Iron Sharpens Iron - seek out and treasure those men who will tell you, without fear or favour, exactly when and where you are screwing up, and never ever disregard or discount their advice, for they can be trusted while others cannot; Follow the steps outlined in this podcast, and you will quickly find that your idleness and laziness will disappear. About American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is an industry-wide organization that exists to provide supply chain assistance to disaster relief organizations (and other non-profits). We do this by bringing the expertise and resources of the logistics industry together with non-profit disaster relief organizations so that we can help solve their most pressing supply chain challenges immediately after disasters strike.   That way, help – and hope – arrive sooner. Key Takeaways: Building Supply Chain Resiliency Supply chain resilience is the ability of a supply chain to both resist disruptions and recover operational capability after disruptions occur. COVID-19 has disrupted supply chains around the world and reminded supply chain professionals of the importance of building supply chain resiliency. While COVID is the latest crisis to disrupt supply chains, it is certainly not the last. Consumers, investors, governments, and communities may ultimately judge companies on how they respond to this period of disruption. As supply chains have become larger, more sophisticated, and global, there is a greater chance for disruption. There is a reactive and proactive element to building supply chain resiliency. There are 3 types of supply chain disruptions: geopolitical, commercial, and physical. Supply chain resiliency process begins with understanding where your supply chain is vulnerable to disruption. Once a supply chain vulnerability is identified, measures should be taken to minimize or eliminate the vulnerability. Prof. Richard Sharpe, Hon. MRIA Based at the University of Oxford, Richard Sharpe has published extensively on a range of medieval topics – lives of saints, studies of medieval libraries, individual manuscripts and collections. With Mícheál Hoyne, he has compiled Clóliosta, an online catalogue of books printed in Irish, 1571-1871 (publication autumn 2019). Conference by the Royal Irish Academy Library in partnership with Roinn na Sean-Ghaeilge, Ollscoil Mhá Nuad. The Royal Irish Academy manuscript known by its shelfmark ‘23 N 10' was produced in Ballycummin, Co. Roscommon, in the sixteenth century. It is an extraordinarily important manuscript for many reasons, but it is particularly significant because it contains tales which are amongst the oldest surviving literature in Irish. These tales would originally have been preserved in a now-lost manuscript called Cín Dromma Snechta. Aside from wonderful examples of Old Irish narrative literature, the manuscript also preserves legal texts, poetry and wisdom literature from early medieval Ireland. This two-day conference will explore all aspects of the production, survival and significance of the ‘Book of Ballycummin' and the marvels of medieval Irish literature which are contained within it. Described in the nineteenth century as a ‘little remnant of the work of the ancients', this manuscript is a remarkable witness to the earliest development of Irish literature. Born in the wake of one devastating hurricane, the American Logistics Aid Network found itself in the eye of another. ALAN was formed in response to a series of unusually intense storms in 2005, most notably Hurricane Katrina. Today, the organization draws on an extensive roster of private companies, trade associations, government agencies and relief organizations to respond to any manner of disaster, enabling the rapid delivery of food, clothing, shelter and other critical supplies to those in need. Kathy Fulton, interim president and director of operations with ALAN, and Richard Sharpe, chief executive officer of Competitive Insights LLC, join us to discuss how ALAN and its partners responded to Hurricane Sandy, which slammed the Caribbean and Atlantic seaboard in 2012. They talk about the lessons they learned, and how they plan on dealing with the next big disaster.
