‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. But that's the problem. Like a cat chasing its tail, 'more' will never give us what we seek. As meditation teacher Billy Wynne explains, 'more' is an illusory concept. But Alanna Kaivalya regards two qualities in particular, intuition and emotion, at risk of being lost in the modern age, where women are expected to be strong and independent, like men. "The Satisfied Woman," she says, reclaims her feminine power in order to uniquely gift the world. The episode elucidates the stark reality that music creators receive a mere 2.99% of the revenue generated from streaming platforms, such as Spotify, in Canada, a figure that significantly undermines their financial viability. This percentage, dictated by the Copyright Board of Canada, is distributed by SOCAN among songwriters, composers, and producers, further exacerbating the challenges faced by artists reliant on these meager payouts. The discussion highlights the systemic issues within the music industry, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has intensified the financial struggles of creators. We delve into the complexities of music licensing and the calculations that determine royalties, revealing that the average payout per stream is approximately 0.0084, an amount that barely qualifies as compensation. This conversation serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of transparency and advocacy for fair compensation in the ever-evolving landscape of music distribution.Takeaways: The current license fee paid by music services platforms in Canada is set at 2.99%. SOCAN distributes the 2.99% license fee among songwriters, composers, and producers on Spotify. The Copyright Board of Canada plays a significant role in determining the set rates for royalties. Artists receive approximately 0.0084 per spin on Spotify, which is significantly less than one cent. The disparity in revenue between creators and platforms like Spotify is a matter of grave concern. To maximize exposure, artists should disseminate their music across all available platforms simultaneously. Companies mentioned in this episode: SOCAN Spotify CBC Radio Nielsen

Don't kink-shame the promiscuous CBD. It's okay that in a world of orthosteric normative binding, CBD is into allosteric binding. In fact, CBD is not just into any allosteric binding. CBD is into negative allosteric binding. If none of that makes any sense to you, don't worry. We are going to take a deep dive into how the famous cannabinoid, CBD, interacts with the cannabinoid receptor CB1. And it doesn't bind like a key into a lock, which is how pharmacy school told Trevor that all ligands bind to their receptors. Like all things cannabis, things are weirder, more complicated and more nuanced than our co-host, Trevor, thought. Not just darkness itself, but what darkness hides--ghosts, demons, spirits. The mere thought of such entities drives nascent seekers away before they even get started. But it needn't be that way. Jan Thompson, Jane Fleming, and Wade Prpich are spiritual guides who know the dark side, but who choose the light. In fact, each would say that the way we conquer our primal fears and discover our spiritual power is, precisely, to walk in the light. Then, they say, the darkness fades and the way opens. How do we define “Craft Cannabis” in Canada? Greencraft Cannabis, a local Manitoba grow operation, is out to answer this question. Eric Greening discusses the process of obtaining his Health Canada micro cultivation licence and how his new company will grow smaller batches putting the plant first. Not only has Health Canada created opportunity for smaller craft growers to finally legally enter the cannabis space, these new licences have also fashioned economic development opportunities for rural communities. Kirk and Trevor question whether the path craft cannabis businesses follow will be similar to the craft beer industry? They ponder how large growers will compete with this new craft market place. This episode marks the start of a planned series exploring the question above…Greencraft Cannabis - WebsiteEric Greening- LinkedInMusic by:David Crosby - Glory - YouTube(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Additional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

The conversation with BioSource Botanicals continues. In Part 2 Kirk and Trevor look deeper into the use of cannabis and cannabis-derived products offered by BioSource Botanicals. The expert panel discuss the differences in absorption and bioavailability between topical, sublingual, and edible cannabis products. They emphasize the importance of using whole plant extracts rather than isolated compounds, as well as the potential benefits of targeting mitochondrial health. The discussion also touches on the challenges of regulating the cannabis industry and the need for more scientific research to ensure quality and consistency in cannabis products.BioSource Botanicals - WebsiteBrent Ristow PhD (Chemistry), JD- LinkedInDr. Abraham Benavides,MD- LinkedInDaniel Gana, MSc- LinkedInMusic by:Un Leon No Se Rinde by Jahricio - YouTube(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Additional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

Especially for men, the heart may long for deep connection while all our social posturing creates the opposite--distance. When men discover deep friendship with other men it is a gift to be savoured and, in this instance, shared. Don McLeod, Barry Foster and I have met together for almost twenty-five years, dubbing ourselves, preposterously, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. We have no advice about how others might do this themselves, but by sharing our own story perhaps some wisdom will emerge for those who seek a similar experience. As a chemotherapy patient, he had to go to the illegal market to get his cannabis. Ethan Zohn is a world traveller, sports commentator, public speaker and, oh yeah, he won Survivor Africa in 2001. The old stories, however, passed down from generation to generation, were meant to instruct us, to identify us with a tribe, and to change us. On the 10th September 2024, the music from the Marvel Animated series DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS was released by Dulcima Records on 10th September, exactly 40 years after the show premiered in the UK. The show's music was written by British composer Johnny Douglas, who, in addition to having a diverse career in film and television, was the composer of music for Marvel's animated series in the 1980s, which included SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, G.I. JOE, and TRANSFORMERS. His filmography includes the classic 1965 sci-fi adventure CRACK IN THE WORLD and the British children's classic THE RAILWAY CHILDREN. Louise Camby, Johnny Douglas' granddaughter, is currently researching a book on his life and career called TRACKS TO MY GRANDFATHER'S SUCCESS, and in October 2024 she spoke with Jason Drury about her grandfather's life and work, how the book was coming along, and how, by chance, she discovered music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS in Johnny Douglas' archives. During the show, we'll hear music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, as well as other music from Johnny Douglas' career. Here is yet another story of how individuals found cannabis to be beneficial for their own personal medical needs. The difference in this story? These people went on to grow a grassroots organization called EduCanNation, a non-profit association of Certified Cannabis Educators. While many traditional healthcare professions remain hesitant or outright dismissive of cannabis medicine, EduCanNation is stepping up to bridge the gap between scientific understanding, consumer needs, and the ever-changing legal landscape. The leaders within EduCanNation aim to set the national standards for all Cannabis Coaches and Educators. In this episode, Kirk and Trevor continue their discussion on the emergence of Cannabis Coaches and Educators—an unregulated, but increasingly necessary role—seems to be a natural response to the gaps in education and access that exist in the heavily regulated cannabis space.EduCanNation - WebsiteJay Jay O'Brien- LinkedInShawna Dunbar- LinkedIn(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Music by:Pass It On - Bob Marley & the Wailers - YouTubeAdditional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

British composer Stuart Hancock's most recent work on the animated epic KENSUKE'S KINGDOM Kensuke's Kingdom helps establish the children's book adaptation as one of the year's most sweeping and heartfelt stories. The film is a good old-fashioned adventure rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation with a voice cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, and Ken Watanabe. The story concerns a boy who is swept overboard during a storm on a worldwide sailing trip with his family and washes ashore on an island in the Pacific Ocean. While there, he realises someone is nearby, aiding him with his survival. The script for the film was by award-winning British scriptwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce based on the book by celebrated British author Sir Michael Morpurgo, who is most well-known for his book WAR HORSE, also adapted into an acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. In November 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Stuart Hancock via Zoom from his home in Leighton Buzzard, England. During the conversation, they discussed his work on KENSUKE'S KINGDOM and the similarities and differences between scoring for commercials and narrative work. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG. But first, they discussed another of his recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which will be released on APPLE + in August 2024. Doug Liman directed the film, which stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to steal a corrupt politician's ill-gotten gains. Since launching the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon in April of 2021, we've offered our patrons exclusive perks based on the tier they signed up for. One of those perks is participating in all request programs. If you want to join in future all-request shows, please head over to our Patreon page, and join the community in any tier that is $5 USD/month or above. Once you do, you can participate in all upcoming all-request programs. Before we get into today's episode, we must first discuss its origins. On October 30, 2023, I worked late into the evening to complete the first ALL REQUEST HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. The audio was recorded, tracks were chosen, and the editing was finished. I tried to export the show, and to my horror Adobe Audition crashed. I restarted the application and tried again. Same result, but this time I received an error message indicating that my voice-over file was corrupt. It took nearly an hour to record the voiceover and several hours to edit the episode. I was also in the midst of one of my busiest years ever, so I didn't have the time or energy to do it all over again, so I informed my Patrons that the show would be postponed and rescheduled for this year! Thank goodness I have a wonderful community of patrons over there, they understand and waited patiently for the show to be done. Fast forward almost 365 days, and here we are; everything has been re-recorded, re-edited, and... I am pleased to announce that the show has been successfully exported for you to enjoy today! For this first ever Patreon All Request Halloween Special show, you get to hear some spooky favourites from the biggest supporters of the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast including Alan Rogers, Al Brown, Glenn McDorman, Don Mase, Will Welch, Angela Rabatin, Deniz Çağlar, Jérôme Flick, Stacy Livitsanis, Lee Wileman, Joe Wiles, Jeffrey Graebner, Victor Field, Eldaly Morningstar, Steve Karpicz, Dave Williams and Carl Wonders. They requested tracks from such composers as Ronald Stein, John Harrison, Christophe Beck, Herdís Stefánsdóttir, Christopher Young, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Wojciech Kilar, Bruno Coulais, Bruce Broughton, Dean Kopri, Joesph LoDuca, Alejandro Amenabar, and John Williams. Thank you to everyone who participated. Again, if you didn't get a chance to submit a request but want to be a part of the next all-request program, we'd love to have you join the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon community. However, you should not feel obligated to participate. I am not forcing anyone to join. Remember, this podcast is always free to listen to, but if you want to support the program and join the Patreon community, we'd be delighted to have you. Steven sings some amazing songs and talks about The BareNakedLadies, Trans-Canada Highwaymen, the creative process, blowing up your life, breaking up with your partners, repairing your life, finding freedom working for yourself, being a self starter, zoom shows, Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono, band camp, and getting pelted with mac & cheese. Bio: Over the last thirty-five years, Steven Page has established himself as one of the most recognizable and enduring voices in music. The release of his latest album, Excelsior, shows that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Since its release, Steven has toured Canada, The US and the UK with The Steven Page Trio, and has performances planned well into 2024. As a co-founder, vocalist and songwriter for Barenaked Ladies, Steven sang and wrote classics like “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had A Million Dollars,” “What A Good Boy,” “It's All Been Done” and many more. With the band, he sold over 15 Million albums and scored multiple Junos, Billboard Music Awards, SOCAN awards, Gemini Awards and two Grammy nominations. After leaving the band in 2009, Steven embarked on a solo career that has produced five solo albums, including 2022's Excelsior, and has seen him tour worldwide, from folk festivals to cabarets and theatres, all the way to packed arenas on his recent string of dates opening for rock legends The Who. Steven performs in many configurations, from solo to full band with horn section, but, since 2016, he has been playing most often with his pals in The Steven Page Trio, Craig Northey of Vancouver legends Odds on guitar, and Kevin Fox on cello. The trio configuration provides the right amount of portability, intimacy and power to fill just about any venue imaginable. Steven has performed arrangements of some of his best-loved songs from his long career with orchestras including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Symphony New Brunswick and has more symphony shows on the horizon in the next two years. A passionate mental health advocate, Steven has been in demand as a public speaker since 2011, sharing his own story with audiences across North America. In 2018, Steven was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with his former bandmates in Barenaked Ladies, at the Juno Awards Ceremonies in Vancouver. In 2020, when work on the musical he wrote with playwright Daniel MacIvor for Canada's Stratford Festival, Here's What It Takes, was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Steven began performing weekly livestream concerts over Zoom, Steven Page Live From Home. These Live From Home shows, sometimes selling 1000 tickets at a time, cultivated a tightly-knit community of music fans from all over the world, and kept them feeling connected when it was most needed. Steven continues to perform Live From Home shows on Saturdays when he's not on the road, with the 100th episode planned for early in 2023. The Governor-General's Performing Arts Awards approached Steven in 2021 about writing a song as a surprise tribute to his friend, Ryan Reynolds, and the result was “Canada Loves You Back,” a song as poignant, humourous and Canadian as the actor it honours. Steven is a frequent collaborator with Toronto's Art of Time Ensemble, made up of some of Canada's best classical, jazz and pop musicians. With them, he released an album of covers, A Singer Must Die, in 2009, and also appears on their Sgt. Pepper and Songs of Leonard Cohen albums. Along with Chris Murphy (Sloan), Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), and Craig Northey (Odds), Steven makes up a quarter of The Trans-Canada Highwaymen, four lead singers of classic Canadian bands, whose first album of Canadian covers is set to be released in the fall of 2023.

Cinematic Sound Radio - Soundtracks, Film, TV and Video Game Music
On today's program, I'm celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101. For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number. So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere. Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Nathan Blumenfeld, Lee Wileman, Daniel Herrin, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French, Ian Clark —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN.
