Robbie Coltrane once said, “I sometimes worry that all the beautiful things have been made.” One of his first memorable roles in a film was in Nuns on the Run in 1990. Eventually, he would land a supporting role in the James Bond franchise that featured Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007. He appeared in both Goldeneye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). His biggest break yet came when he was cast as Hagrid, the gentle half-giant, in author J.K. Rowling's film adaptations of the Harry Potter series. We started several months ago when John read his first James Bond novel, "Moonraker." In the Bond mood, the thought was maybe we talk about the 007 movies that are celebrating big anniversaries; there happen to be three of them this year. So, we did that, but maybe adding in the comparisons between those movies and the book upon which they were based was a good idea. Here we are in this process, but "Diamonds are Forever" is not in an anniversary year so, this episode will focus on the novel and less about the comparison. I mean, we should just go through these Ian Fleming classics in order now, right? We hope you enjoy the discussion. What are your favorite James Bond novels? Before all of that we talk about a few shows we've been watching, and John gives his thoughts on Fiendish volume 1 and 2 by Irene Strychalski. @RenieDraws Is it worth the read? For the third anniversary of the Asian Review of Books podcast, I wanted to do something a little different today—and talk about another one of my hobbies, video games. For video game players of—let's call them the elder millennial set and older—there's something special about the final dozen or so years of the 20th century. The Super Nintendo, the Sega Genesis, the Nintendo 64 and the Sony PlayStation: it was a period of technical advancement and creative experimentation that led to classics still beloved today. Exploring many of these classics—big and small, Japanese and Western, console and PC—are the entries of the Boss Fight Books series, compiled by writer Gabe Durham. Over the past several years, Gabe has invited his fellow writers to put together short works on the classic games that stand out in the medium's history. As of this interview, the 33 entries in the series span from 1976's Breakout to 2010's Red Dead Redemption. For today's anniversary panel, I invited Gabe along with three of his fellow writers—Alyse Knorr, Sebastien Deken, and Mike Sholars—to talk about their choice of games, what makes the 1989-2000 period so special, and why, perhaps, Japanese companies feature so prominently in the history of games. Gabe Durham is the founding editor & publisher of Boss Fight Books. He is the author of a previous Boss Fight entry, Bible Adventures, and a novel, Fun Camp. (Books mentioned in this interview: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask [2000, Nintendo 64]) Alyse Knorr is an associate professor of English at Regis University and the co-editor of Switchback Books. She is also the author of the poetry collections Mega-City Redux, Copper Mother, and Annotated Glass. (Books mentioned in this interview: Super Mario Bros. 3 [1989, Nintendo Entertainment System]; Goldeneye 007 [1997, Nintendo 64]) Sebastian Deken is a writer and musician born in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied music and French literature at Washington University in St. Louis, then went on to receive his MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University School of the Arts. (Books mentioned in this interview: Final Fantasy VI [1994, Super Nintendo Entertainment System]) Mike Sholars is a writer, editor, podcast host, Creative Director, and former full-time journalist. His work can be found in HuffPost, Kotaku, Polygon, and VICE. Garner and Bryce continue their conversation about songs that hit WAY harder than they should. Some are TV theme songs, some are commercial jingles, and who could forget that music from the Goldeneye game on N64?!?

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: The Rich Zeoli Show is LIVE from the Grand Hotel in Cape May, New Jersey for our special Friday the 13th broadcast! On Thursday night, a Philadelphia police officer was killed during a shooting in the Terminal D parking garage at the Philadelphia International Airport. A second officer is currently hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition. In a clip that has gone viral, Justin Trudeau— son of Pierre Trudeau and definitely not the son of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro— was confronted by a critic who mocked the Canadian Prime Minister for claiming to be concerned about climate change while simultaneously allowing “nine V8 engines” in his motorcade to remain “idling for 30-minutes.” Comedian Mark Riccadonna joins The Rich Zeoli Show for a hilarious conversation. On Thursday, Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was charged with acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. Riccadonna notes that he thought all international secret agents looked like James Bond in Goldeneye—but now Menendez has proven cinema wrong. Want to see one of Mark's upcoming shows? Find details here: https://markriccadonna.com On Thursday night, Representative Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced that he would withdraw from the House speakership race—seemingly clearing a path for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to become the new Republican nominee. But can Jordan get the 217 House votes he needs? Luke Broadwater of The New York Times writes: “Representative Ann Wagner of Missouri called Mr. Jordan's candidacy a ‘nonstarter.' Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska, who represents a district won by President Biden, said lawmakers were worried about caving to the whims of the hard-right members who had refused to back Mr. Scalise. Representative Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, a supporter of Mr. Jordan's, acknowledged that there were Republicans who would not support him ‘because they don't want to reward that behavior.' Some members, foreseeing a fight that could drag on for weeks, were also discussing how they might give Representative Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina—the temporary speaker whose role is primarily to hold an election for a speaker—more power to carry out the chamber's work until the conflict could be resolved.” You can read Broadwater's full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/13/us/politics/house-speaker-jordan-scalise.html

"Pay attention, 007!" This week we go back to the James Bond franchise with 'The World is Not Enough'. Does this stack up to the greatness of Goldeneye, or does it fall short?
I have mentioned Yorkshire many times, but rarely focused on it. Time to rectify that. Yorkshire is a historic county of England, between the Pennies and the North Sea. It is England's largest historical county with a history shaped by the Vikings (Danelaw), the War of the Roses (1455 – 1487), and the Industrial Revolution.Famous Yorkshire folk include:Sean Bean, best known as ‘006' in Goldeneye, and as Sharpe a kind of Napoleonic 007. The original Bernard Cornwell novels have Sharpe as a Londener, but this was reset for the show after casting Bean.Judi Dench, hard to know which is her best-known role, but I shall default to ‘M' from the 007 films! Her Yorkshire accent only comes out with strong language.Diana Rigg (Mrs. James Bond) who is from Doncaster, just like Jeremy Clarkson, although they sound quite different. Clarkson's original ‘BBC voice' was closer to Rigg's, he later dropped it for his more natural accent. Patrick Stuart (a non-Bond); in the 24th Century no one cares if you have hair (for men anyway)Pete Prostlewaite, Steven Spielberg called him "The best actor in the world"! He's most famous for Jurassic Park 2 and Inception (he's the old dude dying who prompts the story)… and of course, Brassed Off (1996) with a young Obi Wan Kenobi.I also talk about a famous Yorkshire ‘anthem':Ilkla Mooar baht 'at Song Lyrics:Wheear 'ast tha bin sin' ah saw thee, ah saw thee?On Ilkla Mooar baht 'atTha's been a cooartin' Mary JaneTha's bahn' to catch thy deeath o` cowdThen us'll ha' to bury theeThen t'worms'll come an` eyt thee upThen t'ducks'll come an` eyt up t'wormsThen us'll go an` eyt up t'ducksThen us'll all ha' etten theeThat's wheear we get us ooan back Don't worry, I provide a translation from the West Yorkshire dialect. I do attempt to read it in the dialect, please have patience with that! Finally, I wrap up with 8 suggestions for days out in Yorkshire. For this week's episode, Jamelle and John were joined by Isaac Chotiner of the New Yorker magazine to watch and discuss 1995's GoldenEye, the first James Bond film of the 1990s and the first James Bond film of the post-Cold War era. GoldenEye is the seventeenth film in the James Bond series and the first to star Pierce Brosnan, who would go on to star in three subsequent pictures, all of which we will eventually cover on the podcast: Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.Directed by Martin Campbell and starring, in addition to Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen, Alan Cumming, Judi Dench and Joe Don Baker, Goldeneye was something of a reboot for the Bond franchise, which had been on a six-year hiatus since the previous entry, License to Kill starring Timothy Dalton. The plot of GoldenEye is as straightforward as one of these movies can manage: Bond is tasked with stopping the mysterious Janus syndicate from stealing and using a Soviet-era space weapon capable of causing an electro-magnetic pulse blast anywhere on the planet. Complicating this mission is the fact that the leader of Janus, Alec Trevelayn, is a former MI6 agent who was supposed to have died on a mission with Bond, nine years earlier. There's the usual adventures and explosions and casual sexual encounters, culminating in a final showdown between Bond and Trevelayn on a massive satellite.GoldenEye, if you've somehow never seen it, is available for rental and purchase on iTunes and Amazon. For our next episode, we're covering the 1995 romantic-political comedy, “The American President,” starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning.Connor Lynch produced this episode. In this week's No Lowballers podcast by GoWild presented by GunBroker.com, we're talking all about real pop culture firearms such as the Walther PPK and the Smith & Wesson Model 29. We start the episode off diving into the history of the Walther PPK and how it made its way into the James Bond films. Logan delves into the history of the PPK and how it's dated back to the early 1930s before being used by Germans in WWII, some of these early models had a requirement for the magazine to be serialized and match the gun's serial number. Logan has a magazine that is serialized and is always looking to be able to pair that magazine to its original gun. We talk on how we got introduced to the Walther PPK through Bond, while iconic to the movies almost all of us have stronger memories of using it playing 007 Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. How were you introduced to the Walther PPK?Next up, maybe one of, if not if THE most iconic movie guns…Dirty Harry's Smith & Wesson Model 29. Smith & Wesson were in a bad spot with the Model 29, almost completely scraping it from their lineup until the success of Dirty Harry pushed it to the forefront of the spotlight, causing national backorder for many years. Brad asked about the value of firearm memorabilia from movies comparing both real firearms and prop guns. While credible proof of them being used in a movie carries value, the real firearms generally carry a much heftier price tag. Logan tells his story of how he's tied to Dirty Harry's Model 29, and you guys will absolutely not believe it, make sure you listen in to hear his cool story. We end the episode with Dan talking about the two most iconic movies from his childhood. He starts a conversation about how the impracticality of a gun in a movie makes it more memorable to people who watch. Logan retouches on a previous episode about the takedown lever action rifle from John Wick 4, Mad Pig Customs reached out and set the record straight on if it's a real gun or a fantasy gun. Make sure to listen through the end of the podcast to see the answer on this awesome gun.The show launches every Thursday morning. For this week's episode, we watched the 1995 coming-of-age tale slash Vietnam War movie slash crime thriller “Dead Presidents,” produced and directed by Albert and Allen Hughes. It stars Larenz Tate, Keith David, Chris Tucker, N'Bushe Wright, Freddy Rodriguez and Bokeem Woodbine.“Dead Presidents” is the story of Anthony Curtis, a soon-to-be high school graduate from the Bronx who chooses to join the Marines in search of his own destiny. The year is 1969 and he is sent to Vietnam, leaving his family, his girlfriend Juanita and his friends behind. He experiences the worst of the war and returns home, angry and alienated, to his old girlfriend and his daughter. His friends, who also went to war, have also had their own trials. Each desperate for meaning and for money, they devise a plan to rob an armored car. As you might expect, things get quickly out of hand.In the course of the episode, Jamelle and John discuss the experience of Black veterans in America's wars, the role of Vietnam in American national memory and the way race shapes our understanding of crime. The tagline for “Dead Presidents” is “The only color that counts is green.” You can find the move for rent on iTunes and Amazon.Episodes come out every two weeks, so we will see you then with an episode on the first James Bond film of the 1990s, “Goldeneye.”Connor Lynch produced this episode.
