Boas vendas!

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talks about The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Peter Jackson's live-action motion picture from 2001. Based on the popular 1950s books by Professor J.R.R. Tolkien, Jackson filmed the trilogy back to back to back in his native land of New Zealand to take advantage of its economic disparity and varied landscapes. After wandering with his buddies through the forest and crossing a river, diminutive hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) volunteers to lead a diverse party to Mount Doom to get rid the dangerous One Ring. They run into trouble along the way. Although The Fellowship of the Ring takes its sweet time to get started, it works as a great example of high fantasy world building.  Thrasher also talks about his middling response to Mass Effect: Andromeda, Bioware's latest title in their popular science-fiction RPG video game series. Mat was a little let down by The Founder, a drama about Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) mutating McDonald's into a successful worldwide franchise through land acquisition and powdered milkshakes.  Listen to this episode while snarfing down second breakfast for maximum enjoyment. Welcome to episode 22 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast featuring Touker Suleyman of BBC's Dragons Den talking all about the new drama "The Founder" starring Michael Keaton.  The Founder is the true story of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a struggling salesman from Illinois, met Mac (John Carroll Lynch) and Dick McDonald (Nick Offerman), who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. Kroc soon maneuvers himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a multi-billion dollar empire. Touker Suleyman has 40 years' retail and manufacturing experience and is best known as the founder of quintessentially British menswear brand, Hawes & Curtis and the man credited with reinventing the seminal 90s womenswear label, Ghost. After a false start in accountancy, Touker kicked off his retail career at the age of 18. He entered into a joint venture in a leather factory and soon after established a clothing manufacturer supplying to some of the biggest names of the British high street. Touker’s rise in the business world has not been without its challenge. In the 1980s auditors identified significant debt behind one of his business ventures and he had six weeks to find £2 million pounds. Unfortunately, a potential investor pulling out at the last minute, forcing the business into liquidation, and he was forced to start again from nothing. Touker went on to build a thriving international clothing manufacturer which still sits at the heart of his businesses and is now a serial entrepreneur, backing seven retail and commercial property businesses. Touker has a keen interest in supporting start-ups and invests in a number of small British companies. And of course, he now sits on BBC Dragons Den and has invested so far in the Den: £575, 000.  So Touker knows a thing or two about business and was a great person to speak to about how much of the film meets reality...

This week Kris excitedly announces the Amazon release of BLOOD OF THE TRIBADES, the sexy lesbian vampire homage to Hammer horror that features him in a villainous role. Before the guys dive into the week’s movies, Kris issues a correction to his description of THE BYE BYE MAN at the request of a listener. With corrections and plugs out of the way, Dave steps up to spoilerpiece THE FOUNDER (at 8:41), a chronicle of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) transformed McDonalds from a small fast food chain owned by hardworking brothers (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman) into a multi-billion-dollar company. Dave shares its unique take on Kroc as a character, revealing how Kroc starts out sympathetic, but becomes an incredible shyster as the film progresses. Then all three guys tackle SPLIT (at 27:16), M. Night Shyamalan’s twisty thriller about a group of teenage girls abducted by man with multiple personalities (James McAvoy). The guys marvel at McAvoy’s dynamite performance as well as great turns by Betty Buckley and Anya Taylor-Joy, although they find the movie’s ending lacking and a little icky. The plus side: Dr. Kris has some ideas for how it could be improved.
