On the afternoon of July 18, 1984, James Huberty left his apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood of San Diego, California, and drove one block over to the nearby McDonalds. After walking through the door of the restaurant, Huberty raised his Uzi semi-automatic 9mm and began indiscriminately shooting at patrons, employees, and anyone else who happened to cross into his line of sight. At the time, and for decades after, the San Ysidro McDonalds massacre was the worst mass shooting in American history, with the shooter killing twenty-one people and injuring nearly two dozen others before being struck down by a sniper's bullet. The incident lasted over an hour, during which time San Diego police and SWAT members surrounded the building, but didn't enter the building until an hour after the shooting started, when Huberty was already dead. Today is our 500th episode of JJ Meets World, and I'd like to mark the occasion by talking about one of my favorite dudes. JJ and I became friends in 2001 over a McDonalds breakfast after we had camped out overnight with a group of friends for the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. JJ, myself, and Dustin Buchanan had spent the night sleeping in my 1975 Ford Econoline conversion van in the parking lot of the movie theater. We woke up smelling like a gas and decided to let Dustin sleep while we grabbed some chow. By the end of that meal I knew this was someone I needed in my life, and ever since then, JJ has been one of the most reliable, loving, and caring friends I could have ever hoped for. The amount of times this guy has stepped up, no questions asked, to help me out of a scrape is uncountable. Every movie I make, I want him in it. Every crazy idea I dream up, I want him to hear it. Every time I'm stuck in my head, being my own worst enemy, guess who it is I call. When I approached JJ in 2018 with the idea of starting a podcast with him as the host, I was overcome with joy when he said yes, and ever since then we've been pumping out a podcast a week (we started with two episodes a week, and then we calmed down and became sensible, ha ha). And now, eight years later, we're celebrating our friendship and our shared project with our 500th episode. JJ, I wish your parents were here right now so I could thank them for bringing you into this world. All of your successes stem from your luminous character. (Knock on wood: let's see how the "vote counting" goes over the next several weeks in the "incompetent" Golden State.) Not such a good week for John Bolton, nor for aesthetic sensibility, if the Obama library is any indication. Why does the left prefer brutalist ugliness? And then told them they need bad bosses and boring jobs if they want to be successful. Now, Michelle Obama is right. We've all had to pass through the boring jobs. For me it was the drive through at McDonalds in Bombay. We've all had to be paid poorly – $32,000 a year is what I started on. We've all had to have the awful boss, or bosses. Gen Z is only experiencing what we all did, and like we also did, they have unrealistic expectations about how awesome and fantastic life is going to be as soon as they get their first paycheck. And sure, some of them do have a lack of resilience. That's what happens when your parents are Gen Xers and millennials who helicopter parented you and gentle parented you and you never learned how to feel properly sad or uncomfortable. But they are also, I think, better at setting boundaries than any of us before. And some of that is what we're seeing and calling "complaining" and "a lack of resilience". We put up with demands to do extra work, unpaid. They know that's a rort. We went to parties and get-togethers we didn't want to just because we thought we had to. They say no. We allowed our bosses to give us zero pay rises while inflation shot up. They know that's basically a pay cut. I think it's two sides of the same coin. And again, we probably have gentle parenting to thank for teaching them to use their words and set boundaries in a way that most of us never learned. So next time we hear criticism of Gen Z, and trust me they're annoying so it will happen, it might pay to ask; is this a lack of resilience, a lack of toughness, or is it just that they know how to say no?
