Welcome to That Shady Buffalo: Episode #096!On this episode tune in to hear about my experience watching The Fellowship in the Ring in the theaters for the first time ever!
Forth Eorlingas! This week we toss Gimli face first into the forces of the Enemy. It's another four hour tour of Middle Earth, and this time, we brought Ents.Is the middle film of a trilogy ever the best one? In this case, the jury's out, but one thing is for certain: it has the weirdest title of all three.Topics explored this week include: Legolas's whole deal, the groundbreaking creation of Sméagol, Merry and Pippin blazin' it with Treebeard, Helm's Deep, Helm's Deep, and a LOT more Helm's Deep.Next week, we complete the holy trinity with RETURN OF THE KING (2003), and then we promise we'll never talk about Rings again (just kidding, the Ring has corrupted us and there's no turning back now). Starting The Fellowship of the Ring and feeling overwhelmed by names, races, and places you're “supposed” to know already? You're not alone. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim breaks down a clean, beginner-friendly Who's Who of The Fellowship of the Ring — the characters who actually matter, what their roles are, and why you should care, without drowning in Tolkien lore, appendices, or homework. We'll cover:• Every member of the Fellowship• Key Elves, Hobbits, and Men you'll meet along the way• The ancient beings and quiet side characters that add emotional weight• The shadowy forces that set the stakes for the entire journeyWhether this is your first time reading Tolkien, a reread after years away, or you've only ever watched the movies and want to try the books, this episode is designed to make Middle-earth feel approachable, not intimidating.
We begin a new adventure, re-watching and discussing Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Why is this story so important to nerds and what do we make of it all these years later? How is it Final Fantasy?
One of the most epic adventures ever put to screen comes our way. Here's what we thought!
Listeners, the Third Age is finally upon us. The nine companions are assembled. The recording is 4 hours long. It shall be… The Fellowship of the Duck! This week, Adam and Dom are embarking on a quest to save Middle-Earth and somehow make sense of the greatest trilogy in movie history. It's FELLOWSHIP, and we still cannot believe Peter Jackson actually pulled this off. There are simply too many Eye of the Duck scenes! Some points of discussion on our journey to Mordor: do the Rings movies function as self-contained stories? Is this the best the industry will ever be? Should Jackson be arrested for skipping Tom Bombadil? And when the hell is Warner Bros going to finally put out a 4K box set that contains the Blu-Ray Appendices?!Next week, the trilogy continues with another massive episode on THE TWO TOWERS (2002). Let's journey to Middle Earth together! Readers meet Frodo, the unsuspecting beneficiary of Bilbo's ‘Ring'. This gift turns the innocent hobbit's world upside down. Frodo and his friends, Sam, Merry and Pippin set out on a quest to meet up with Gandalf the Grey which is no small task as Black Riders are trailing the travelers. Along the way they meet a Ranger, tall, lean, dark, who goes by the name of Strider. He tells Frodo his carelessness with the Ring has announced to the evil people that the hobbits are in town. Frodo receives a note of warning from Gandalf NOT to use the ring again. He also tells him his friend, Strider, (aka Aragorn) will help him get to Rivendell where he hopes to meet with him.Sacrifice and camaraderie are themes throughout the book. When plans fail there is no blame game. When mistakes are made, they are owned, when tensions arise options are given. When Gimli, the Dwarf, refuses to abide the elves' rule for him to be blindfolded, Aragorn suggests that their whole party be blindfolded.Won't you join us for the journey? We wish each one of you a Merry Christmas!!!
This holiday season we are back to dive into one of the biggest trilogies of all time in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings! Jordan and Colin join Edwin and Alex to break down The Fellowship of the Ring, the first installment from Peter Jackson that kicked it all off in 2001. After discussing our personal backgrounds with the movie and going over the basics we discuss: - The most important scenes to us (22:05) - Delightful moments (39:44) - Best decision by a character (58:43) - Worst decision by a character (1:03:25) - Best specific fight moves (1:09:22) All that, plus the greatest death on film, how to re-cast this to make it bad, favorite lines, where we'd live in Middle Earth, and so much more. So put on your mithril vestments, catch the Bucklebury Ferry, and blow the horn of Gondor to kick off a sprawling epic! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This discussion focuses on the differences between watching Fellowship now versus upon original release with many prompting questions asked about the charcters, the premise, and if the ideas are still relevant in 2025. It's an emotional visceral lookback with some nerdy lore moments too. The time has come to go on a journey to destroy the Ring of Power and discuss one of the biggest film trilogies of all time and up first is the Fellowship of the Ring. Journey with us and special guest Jonathan as we discuss this dense story and the long road to get this trilogy made. This ensemble cast will be talked about along with the differences from the source text. Is this the most important film of the 21st Century or is it too boring for its own good? So pour some rye, grab your second breakfast, and get ready for the long trek to Mount Doom. Cheers!

Peter Jackson convinced Hollywood to fund three epic films at once, then filmed them back-to-back in New Zealand. Madness, and it changed cinema. John, Westy, and Matt journey to Middle-earth to explore how a low-budget horror director made the impossible: a fantasy epic that satisfied Tolkien purists and mainstream audiences. From the epic production, through groundbreaking innovations to an actor's fear of flying (hence all that walking), we're telling the story behind the film that launched a thousand memes, with some big opinions and laughs as we go. We discuss the latter part of "The Fellowship of the Ring" by JRR Tolkien. As always, we hope that you enjoy the conversation.
Having just finished reading Lord of the Rings for the first time and publishing over 10 hours of video essays on the work, I think I am not a certified expert in this text…I am just kidding, please don't come after me. But I do think I have something to offer to people who have yet to read this book. And for those of you who have, you just get to sit back and enjoy me dote on this book for a few minutes.
So I just finished reading the Lord of the Rings: The fellowship of the Ring for the first time in my life. And it was incredible. I will dote on it this essay. And so I did the only rational thing you do after you read an incredible book like that, I rewatched the movie…for maybe the 50th time in my life.

We begin our Fall season with a discussion of the first book of The Lord of the Rings. Topics of discussion include Tolkien's background and how it may have impacted his writing, "Concerning Hobbits", and what a cool guy Tom Bombadil is.As always, we hope that you enjoy the show!
It took them 10 days to get from Lothlorien to the waterfall Tol Brandir. It's a full chapter in the books and in the 10 days there is a whole heap of stuff that happens that…from Legolas seeing an Eagle hunting an eagle…which feels weirdly prophetic…to Sam being deeply uncomfortable in the boats. But I want to talk about three things that really caught my attention in this chapter.
In this episode of Popcorn & Catch-Up, we continue the 2025 season with a discussion of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring! We'll be discussing the film in depth, so be sure to watch it before listening to the episode. He lashes out and then laments that he finds himself in the midst of such danger. The wise wizard Gandalf reminds the little Hobbit that we cannot choose what happens around us, but we can choose how we respond.
