Listen the hell up because we're done playing small. Most people spend their lives marinating in their own excuses, waiting for a permission slip from the universe that isn't coming. They think "getting your shit together" is a slow, painful crawl through a desert of boredom. It's not. It's a quantum leap fueled by the realization that you are the one standing in your own goddamn way. In this episode of The Spirit of the Deal, Brandon G. Handley sits down with Nick Barba—a man who was once so committed to his own destruction he landed a full-page ad in Thrasher just to prove he could survive the chaos. Nick didn't just stumble into sobriety; he tried to systematically debunk the 12 Steps like a jaded investigative reporter, only to accidentally save his own life in the process. Now, he's the co-founder of Revival Recovery Residences, proving that even the most stubborn "victim mentality" can be traded in for a life of purpose and real estate empires. Stop waiting for the ball to drop and start catching the ones you've already thrown. In this deep dive, you're going to learn exactly how to stop robbing yourself of your own happiness and start making moves that actually matter. We're breaking down: The "Terrible Twos" of Sobriety: Why putting down the bottle is only 10% of the battle, and how to survive the ego-shattering reality of the other 90%. The Art of the Spontaneous Empire: How Nick went from a "maybe" conversation in a car to owning a sober living facility in less time than it takes most people to pick a Netflix movie. Identity Theft: Why you need to murder your old self to make room for the person who actually gets things done. The Blueprint of Belief: How surrounding yourself with the right "quirky" winners (like Brandon Novak) acts as a cheat code for your own success. The promise is simple: By the time you finish this episode, you'll realize that "luck" is just what happens when you finally stop being an asshole to your future self. It's time to get out of the way and let the spirit of the deal take over. Eat your vegetables, do the work, and listen to this episode before you find another way to screw up a good thing. In this episode of Narcissist Apocalypse Q&A, Bobby Thrasher, a lawyer specializing in child sexual abuse, discussed the Circle of Hope Girls Ranch in Missouri, which operated from 2006 to 2020. The ranch, which promised reform and education, was revealed to be a site of severe abuse and neglect. Thrasher highlighted the lack of oversight and accreditation in such institutions, especially those with religious components. He emphasized the need for legislative changes, including extending the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse cases. Thrasher also shared insights on supporting survivors, advocating for legal reforms, and the challenges of dealing with institutional abuse.Booby Thrasher can be reached at https://monseesmayer.com/If you want to be a guest on our survivor story podcast, please click here or send us an email at narcissistapocalypse@pm.meClick on the title of our blog to read the Emotional Abuse Checklist. As we prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, Dr. Bill Thrasher joins Wayne Shepherd in conversation about the spiritual discipline of prayer and thanks. (click for more) Website: https://victoriouspraying.com Dr. Bill Thrasher reflects on the meaning and discipline of Thanksgiving, tracing its American roots to Bradford and Lincoln while emphasizing its deep biblical foundation. He explains that gratitude cures pride, restores perspective, and brings spiritual transformation, citing examples such as Nebuchadnezzar, the psalmists, and New Testament figures. Thrasher acknowledges the pain many people face but stresses that everything apart from judgment is God's grace, and that thanksgiving—empowered by the Holy Spirit—helps believers behold God, replace bitterness, experience unity, and receive guidance. Through personal stories, scriptural insights, and practical suggestions for families during the holiday season, he encourages cultivating gratitude daily, including thanking God even for difficult circumstances, trusting God's sovereignty, and allowing thanksgiving to deepen relationships and invite God's presence. Under Dan's leadership, Thrasher has expanded its footprint, launched manufacturing through Foundation Supportworks, and built a reputation for integrity, innovation, and customer experience. In this episode, we're diving into how Dan scaled a family business into a trusted brand, navigating family business, what it takes to lead through growth, and why redefining industry standards starts with culture, not concrete.Guest Info: Dan ThrasherWebsite: https://www.gothrasher.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-thrasher-b9580628/Host Info:Email: Bill@rkreiman.comCONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:▶︎ YOUTUBE | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxAdSxHN0dIXZPhA-6p1HYA ▶︎ INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/imbillreiman▶︎FACEBOOK| https://www.facebook.com/billy.reiman ▶︎ LINKEDIN | https://www.linkedin.com/in/bill-reim...▶︎ TWITTER | https://twitter.com/ImBillReiman▶︎ WEBSITE | https://www.rkreiman.com
This one starts out a little differently. Ian Paratore was born and raised in San Francisco, but he's moving away. This week. To Oakland. Ian's dad, Vince Paratore, moved into a Victorian in The Haight in the late-Seventies/early Eighties, and is still there. That's the house Ian grew up in starting roughly 10 years later. Both of his parents are artists and teachers. His dad came to San Francisco from Syracuse, New York, to study photography at SF State. And his mom, Valerie O'Riordan, is from Long Beach in Southern California. She moved to The City to work with ACT (American Conservatory Theater). The house at Page and Clayton is the only place Ian's dad has lived in SF. I asked Ian whether he knows any stories from that house before he was born in the early Nineties. Both his parents being "natural hosts," there were many parties. Nowadays, when his dad is out of town, Ian will sometimes have parties of his own at his dad's place. When he does, he says his dad often offers up stories from back in the day. One involves a party with so many people already inside cramming a hallway, folks had to come and go via the first escape. Back in the day, his dad was a general manager at restaurants like Stars, Donatello, Garibaldi's, and Beach Chalet, which he helped open. Both his parents were big in the San Francisco restaurant scene. We turn to Ian's early life, which he experienced in the mid-Nineties to early 2000s. As a kid, and a kid without a backyard, he spent a lot of time in Golden Gate Park and The Panhandle. He hung out on playgrounds and basketball courts. He adds that "the craziness of Haight Street was just … normal." I ask Ian about Skates on Haight, which I knew from my Eighties/Nineties skateboarding days from ads in magazines like Thrasher. (Marcella, who took photos for this episode and was with us at the table, chimes in at this point.) Ian rattles off some spots from his childhood in The Haight—places like Gus's before it was known as Gus's, an Ethiopian restaurant, and a musical instrument store. In high school, Ian got into visual arts and playing sports—mainly baseball and basketball. By the time he got to college, he played baseball "at a high level," and art fell more or less by the wayside. More on that in Part 2. But during high school, though he took art classes, sports dominated his life. We end Part 1 with Ian rattling off the San Francisco schools he went to. He did a stint at College of San Mateo (CSM) before getting into UC Berkeley, which was the first time he lived outside his childhood home. He had flirted with college on the East Coast before deciding to stay closer to home. Check back Thursday for Part 2 with Ian. And join us tomorrow for a very special, timely bonus episode. Follow Ian and Break Fake Rules on Instagram. We recorded this podcast at 540 Bar in the Inner Richmond in October 2025. Photography by Marcella Sanchez

I'm always asking questions. The fun begins when you start researching for answers. Such as… Is it a guy thing to get up several times in the middle of the night and donate a pint of something to the cause? Plus…what is thrashing? Is it natural? Why do people thrash? I'm Arroe… I am a daily writer. A silent wolf. I stand on the sidelines and do nothing but watch, listen study then activate. I call it The Daily Mess. A chronological walk through an everyday world. Yes, it's my morning writing. As a receiver of thoughts and ideas, we as people tend to throw it to the side and deal with it later. When a subject arrives, I dig in. It's still keeping a journal! By doing the research the picture becomes clearer. This is the Daily Mess…Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Brian Anderson for Living Proof Radio, full episode on the Living Proof Patreon.http://patreon.com/livingproofnewyorkBrian Anderson is an iconic professional skateboarder celebrated for his lasting influence on street skating. He rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with Toy Machine, gaining early notoriety around the era of Welcome to Hell, turned pro in 1998, and was named Thrasher's Skater of the Year in 1999 after joining Girl Skateboards. That same year he won the World Cup of Skateboarding in Germany. Beyond video parts and contest results, Anderson has left a mark as a designer and brand builder. He launched his own board brand, 3D Skateboards, in 2013, released his Nike SB signature “Project BA” shoe, and later joined Anti-Hero Skateboards after winding down 3D. His current sponsor roster includes Anti-Hero, Nike SB, Spitfire, Ace, Bones Swiss, and Jessup. In 2016, Anderson publicly came out as gay in a widely viewed Vice Sports documentary—an important moment for LGBTQ visibility in skateboarding—and subsequently explored personal themes through art and zines such as Cave Homo.

Brian Gibson is a musician, artist, and game designer best known for blurring the lines between sound, movement, and chaos. As the bassist for the legendary noise-rock duo Lightning Bolt, he's released seven studio albums and played countless ferocious, high-velocity live shows. But he's also spent much of his life working on video games, first as an artist for the music-game developer Harmonix, which he joined in 2001, and more recently as the co-designer of Thumper—a rhythm-violence game that marries kinetic speed and hypnotic visuals.Since its release, Thumper has become a cult classic, earning acclaim for its singular aesthetic and for redefining what a rhythm game could be.
