The glorious song of the male Sage Thrasher rings out every Spring from tracts of sagebrush throughout the west. Sagebrush was once widespread in the Great Basin region, and so were the thrashers. But huge areas of sagebrush were turned into alfalfa and potato farms, and the songs of the thrasher aren't so common today. Sagebrush badly needs advocacy. Soundwaves from the Underground at TDR presents an exclusive playlist featuring the powerful sounds of Mi Último Juego—a pioneering Peruvian punk rock band that has carved its niche in the music scene since 2011. Founded by Daniel Aguilar and Israel Aguilar, the band burst onto the local scene with their debut EP “1, 2, 3, Go…” in 2012, and soon earned acclaim by sharing the stage with influential acts like Cuatro y Medio and Allison. After a hiatus beginning in 2015, Mi Último Juego re-emerged with a refreshed lineup—adding Andree “Thrasher” Pardo, Pool Dávila, and Frank Veintimilla—to unveil a more refined, battle-hardened sound. Their latest single, “Para Mi” (2024), reflects on the urgency of seizing time and pursuing one’s true passion, while the track “Al Final” further showcases their evolution from raw “chiquipunk” beginnings to a mature, dynamic force. In this episode of The Defender Podcast, Herbie Newell is joined by Karla Thrasher, Lifeline's Senior Director of International Adoption, to discuss the heartbreaking impact of China's five-year suspension of international adoptions, which left 400 children—many with special needs—waiting for families. Recent developments, including China's September 2024 decision to end all international adoptions, have deepened the uncertainty for children and the 300 U.S. families still committed to them. Herbie and Karla explore the emotional toll on families, the long-term effects on children, and Lifeline's ongoing advocacy at the highest levels, providing hope through prayer, support, and action. GUESTKarla Thrasher is a licensed social worker with a degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a certified TBRI® Practitioner through the TCU Karen Purvis Institute of Child Development. Since joining Lifeline Children's Services in 2001, she has dedicated her career to serving vulnerable children and families as Senior Director of International Adoption. She lives in Birmingham with her husband, and they have three grown children who champion her ministry work at Lifeline.HOSTHerbie Newell is the President & Executive Director of Lifeline Children's Services and its ministry arms.ADOPTION COUNSELING COURSEAt Lifeline Children's Services, we are reminded daily of the global orphan crisis — a crisis affecting over 140 million vulnerable children worldwide. These children, many of whom are social orphans, need more than just temporary aid; they need the hope, love, and security that only a family can provide. While adoption is a beautiful way to answer this call, less than 0.5% of these children will ever be adopted. That's why Lifeline is committed to walking alongside families on this faith-filled journey of international adoption, equipping them to step forward in obedience and care for the vulnerable. If you feel God stirring your heart to learn more, visit LifelineChild.org/Adoption to explore how you can get started in making an eternal impact.LIFELINE CHILDREN'S SERVICESThe mission of Lifeline Children's Services is to equip the Body of Christ to manifest the gospel to vulnerable children. Our vision is for vulnerable children and their communities to be transformed by the gospel and to make disciples. The species has been documented singing more than 1,100 different songs: a mix of imitations and invented little melodies. While mockingbirds usually repeat a song or phrase three or more times before moving on, Brown Thrashers tend to repeat a phrase only twice.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. As he follows the threads, he finds that a participant in the 1995 murder may be connected to more than one brutal, unsolved case… Against the backdrop of Ohio in the 1980s and 90s, around the height of satanic panic, this true crime story explores memory, perception, and a personal quest for the truth.
