Hello Normandy crew. It has been a hot minute since we talked about BioWare on this podcast, but luckily we have an excuse to now, as People Make Games has scooped both our hosts and has talked with some ex-BioWare devs about what it was like to be in that studio during the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy. It's time for another episode of our BioWare news show BioBits, where we'll talk about some original drafts of the ending, the controversy's affect on how we talk about video games online, and how freeing it can be to criticize something without expecting it to be changed. Enjoy the show! Hello World! Welcome back to Let's Talk ... Audio This interview was recorded online with Squadcast.fm back in April, and begins with Daniy introducing herself as a sound designer at Bioware. She worked on Star Wars: The Old Republic, Anthem, Mass Effect Andromeda, and currently on the new Dragon Age title. She also has some background in live sound and she enjoys field recording. Daniy and Tangela had previously met at an Austin Engineering Society meeting. She went to Madison Media Institute before moving to Chicago for an internship. Afterward, she moved to Dallas for an internship. Before eventually coming to Bioware in Austin, TX, she had also worked at Gearbox and a couple other places including some live sound work. They talk a little bit about persistence, work ethic, luck, and the strange journeys we take into audio. This includes the job of honoring mentorship advice. But also, you can't know everything about a domain, so embrace being a lifelong learner, and make friends with specialists. Teamwork! The cooking/baking metaphor in this part of the conversation is gold! On the topic of learning, talk to people! Don't take learning from other people's failures for granted. Tangela suggests a book called https://www.amazon.com/Proximity-Principle-Proven-Strategy-Career/dp/0978562038 (The Proximity Principle) about Steve Jobs' story of getting pushed out of Apple. School seems to teach us "if I can't do it to 100%, then don't do it" - this is a bad habit! And prevents you from growing. Daniy points out "The space to fail is really important." Tangela asks Daniy for an example of a failure in her audio career. Her answer is about the process of having to scrap a project because someone else built something better. The next topic is about areas where we can grow as audio engineers. From there Daniy shares her interest in field recording. Also she loves to travel, and has been to most states in the US. As part of the field recording discussion, Daniy shares some knowledge about noise pollution in the ultrasonic range. Tangela shares a story about getting custom ear plugs and learning about the loudness levels (a damaging amount) of some everyday experiences like riding the bus. They continue to talk about hearing and health. From there the conversation turns to diversity, advocacy, and the problem of being treated as a spokesperson for the demographics you belong to. Foley art! Tangela and Daniy reference Alena Lecorchick from Rooster Teeth who was interviewed in episode 11, https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lets-talk-foley-art-in-audio-with-alena-lecorchick/id1501111841?i=1000514107781 (Let's Talk Foley Art in Audio with Alena Lecorchick). The next topic of discussion centers around: How do you balance what's good for your career with what's good for your happy and healthy? Also Tangela and Daniy talk about rural - urban divides and perceptions. Tangela asks Daniy to lay out some advice for people new to audio. Her freewheeling answer revolves around being open to learning broadly. Finally they spend some time talking about post-processing workflows a bit before the end of the episode. As usual you can find Tangela on IG @letstalkaudiopodcast and @beatsinabottle, and on her website beatsinabottle.com Support options: Don't forget Beats in a Bottle has an Apparel Store too!

There be dragons on today's very special episode of Axe of the Blood God. Kat and Nadia talk about the best dragons in RPGs -- and by "best," they kind of mean "worst" because everyone knows dragons are at their best when they're burninating the countryside. Okay, cuddly and friendly dragons are valid, too. Maybe all dragons are valid at the end of the day. In any case, Nadia is incapable of shutting up for most of this episode, so enjoy. Also up for discussion: Activision Blizzard is working to improve (albeit with a minimum of effort), Mass Effect Legendary Edition sold like gangbusters to Bioware's relief, and Nadia got a sick-ass tattoo that's currently peeling and kind of gross to look at.

Well a reckoning has come for ActivisionBlizzard, who will weather the storm? Also HALO Infinite flighting starts this weekend! Next Gen Consoles are outpacing their predecessors, and ComicCon@home fails to make a splash.
Today on the podcast, I'm joined by Jordan Criss, a longtime friend, and guest. In many ways, this conversation was really us catching up after not talking for a couple of weeks. As always, it's a lot of fun for us to dive into all the things that we're thinking about or interested in, or just the going on in life. We start this conversation by talking about video games and the difference between video game storytelling and storytelling in film. Then, we cover the bases of some of our favorite story-driven games, like Mass Effect. I also bring up that I am currently working on a playthrough of the last of us, part two, which I'm actually streaming on YouTube. So if you go to the Feeding Curiosity page, I think there are four episodes at the time of this recording. We get into other ideas about telling storytelling and technology. For instance, we talk about corridor digital, a VFX YouTube channel. I've been exploring all of their content and understanding how we use software and technology to create lifelike effects that aren't really there. I also talk of another computer-driven software. A channel called Two-Minute papers, which used the video game, GTA, and AI image processing to create a lifelike version of the game in all, so many cool things happening within the creative realms of creating more and more lifelike simulations. In another area of this, we also talk about electronic vehicles a little bit and the future. So with that summarization, I hope you enjoy this conversation with Jordan, Chris, and as always, there will be show notes for you to find links to all of the things that I just mentioned here and timestamps for you to find those sections and what we thought about them. So you can explore them yourself.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we at last conclude our series on Final Fantasy VI. We give our takeaways and then turn to some of the mountain of feedback that's been piling up. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: June says hello, developing deep character backstories, differing combat mechanics for each character, being pushed to mix parties at the end of the game, full world state changes, going against the grain, going dark places, getting a lot out of their engine and their small set of sprites, stretching beyond your audience's expectations, the alienness of opera, merging exploration with linear story, not knowing what order the story might come in, storylets and minimum expectations of how much game you get, Brett's Book Recommendation, dealing with the end of the world, having trouble getting past an early fight, a strange fan theory, having lots of story and wanting to split the characters, cautioning against reading too much into "original plans," marketing input, the contrasts of Terra and Celes, games as products of their constraints, the business constraints of a changing technology base with many developers, Terra's special ability, input lag in the Anthology, more about the weird Relm sketch glitz, how tools lag, higher fan expectations, the slowing of velocity with each generation, going towards the lowest common denominator or what we know works. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Sebastian Deken, biostats, Chrono Trigger, Baldur's Gate, BioWare, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Ultima (series), Gold Box (series), Wizardry, Dungeons & Dragons, SNES, Batman (obliquely), Shadow of the Colossus, God of War (series), Deus Ex, The Uninhabitable Earth, David Wallace-Wells, Death Stranding, Logan Wells, Skyrim, Star Wars, Sega, Phantasy Star, Wes from DFW, Ted Turner, The Museum of Film and Television, Mikael Danielsson, Sam, Johnny Pockets, Valheim, Cyberpunk, The Witcher III, Marvel, Wonder Woman, John Romero, DOOM (1993), Quake, Stardew Valley, Ratchet & Clank, PS3, Hideo Kojima, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Strange and potentially exciting things are happening at Electronic Arts, the once-maligned super-publisher that seems intent on turning things around, at least when it comes to hardcore players' perceptions of its brand. After ruining Mass Effect, nearly running BioWare into the ground, closing down storied dev Visceral, and botching most of its exclusive run of Star Wars games, it seems EA finally gets it: The audience demands more single-player games. And rumors are EA's about to deliver another one in the form of a Dead Space revival. That makes what was once dead very much alive, and we're very excited to talk about it. Plus: It appears Castlevania is getting a new collection, Sony expects PS5 to break sales records once it can adequately manufacture units, Ghost of Tsushima may be getting a standalone expansion, and much more. Then: Is Microsoft's xCloud a really big deal? What does it mean for a developer to be "media trained?" Will Sony wow us when they return to the mobile market?
