With our 2022 Brewers Congress two months away, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our 2021 keynote address.Greg Zeschuk knows a thing or two about running a team. During his latest visit to the UK in September just gone, we caught up with him again and discussed that before working in beer, the company he co-founded grew to employ 1500 at seven locations across the globe. Zeschuk was originally trained as a medical doctor, before starting the videogame company BioWare in 1995 in his hometown of Edmonton. BioWare created a number of successful games (Baldur's Gate, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect) before being purchased by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2007. While a part of EA BioWare grew to employ over 1500 employees at seven studios across the world. Zeschuk left BioWare in 2012 and after a short hiatus started working in beer.  He went on to start The Beer Diaries, a YouTube channel focused on craft beer, and served as the first Executive Director of the Alberta Small Brewers Association in his home province. This led to Zeschuk starting a brewery in his hometown of Edmonton. To achieve his brewery goals Greg built two buildings – the award-winning Ritchie Market and the Monolith. The Ritchie Market is a multi-use building housing a brewery (Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company), a restaurant (Biera), a butcher, coffee shop, and a bakery. The Monolith was built as a barrel-focused brewery. Out of its Market brewery Blind Enthusiasm focuses on making lagers and runs a barrel-aging program. The Monolith was built to marry scientific method with tradition while making beer largely in wood. At the Monolith Blind Enthusiasm exclusively makes mixed fermentation and spontaneous beer.  And having worked in a variety of different professions across the world, Zeschuk says the key to heading up a team is to ensure you coach people rather than simply manage them, something he discusses in this latest episode.“You have to be a manager, a coach and a referee all in one. And there's probably a little bit of hope involved, too.” “It's important that the right people are in the right positions,” he explains. “And as your team grows, you need to remember that it helps for people to have frameworks to work within.” Zeschuk adds: “I've let people run with roles because I have full confidence in them making it their own. But at times, people are more comfortable with having clear guidance of what's expected of them. So it's key to communicate and discover what works best with that individual.” At its peak, Zeschuk was responsible for managing 600 people at EA BioWare and says having a good team around you is imperative. “When you grow, you need management structure that works for you. But there's no point it being too bloated because that can be disastrous,” he says. “You all need to work well together and, of course, there's a little bit of hope that everyone pulls in the same direction.” And while working in beer Zeschuk is now used to working with smaller teams, he says that doesn't mean there are fewer pressures or challenges. “Making video games was one thing and obviously delays happen. But the idea of telling a customer that we can't deliver their beer that week? he laughs. That's a whole different problem!”

(ALERT: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE MASS EFFECT FRANCHISE.) I spent the afternoon at my friends' kid's birthday party and spent most of my time trying to think of what to do for this write up while no one talked to me (probably because I was staring off into space thinking about this write up. I'm sure that's not welcoming.) The obvious “rewrite ‘Midnight Train to Georgia' about Mass Effect” was right there, but I've been rewriting a lot of songs lately and I don't want that to get stale. I saw a hilarious McDLT commercial earlier this week where Jason Alexander (yes, that one) sings and dances about how this giant container that now fills many-a landfill keeps the tomato and lettuce cold and the patty hot, and while it brought me much joy, I didn't feel like re-writing a bonkers burger ad. I thought about sprinkling the write up with lots of 30 Rock references, but I'm like 97% sure I've already done that. Which left me with two options: A) Just summarize the episode and sprinkle in some dumb jokes or B) let you all glimpse into my head for an afternoon and see that I actually do take this seriously. I guess you can figure out which option I chose. Anyway. Um. My dinner just arrived (I ordered takeout because I couldn't get groceries on account of said birthday party) so…I'm going to go eat poke and watch Top Chef. This episode is about BioWare stuff, RPGS, JRPGs and The Dark Knight Rises. I sing. Adrian does impressions. It's a good one. Enjoy it.

This week on The Electronic Wireless Show podcast we give thanks to listener Tom Fakelastname, who emailed in to ask us about the moral quandaries in video games that we feel are the most meaningful. Matthew isn't here this week, which means we are very well behaved. I talk about BioWare games a normal amount, and Nate tries (and, in fairness, succeeds) to find a way to make moral choices a thing that you can apply to the sort of games he likes. Not Age Of Empires II this time, though. Because there's no Matthew, I change the Cavern Of Lies into a cavern of moral judgement for Nate, and make him run a gauntlet of some of the most important choices in Dragon Age Inquisition with no context. He turns out to be both authoritarian and kind of wholesome as an Inquisitor.

It's an interesting question because, before the conversation you are about to hear today, you likely have never heard that word used to describe a movie before. Maybe you've heard it used to describe characters in a movie, or filmmakers themselves. But never extrapolated to all facets of a movie, and especially not things like production and sound design, or even extras in the background. But that's how Alex Calleros, Senior Video Editor at BioWare and co-host of the film podcast Beyond The Screenplay, describes his all-time favorite movie, Children of Men: a movie with integrity in all aspects of its filmmaking. You think: I am a [child][girl][boy]. I will find myself. You find that you are [regular][famous][poor][rich][unknowable][loved][hated][having an existential crisis][inexorably mortal][more?] SELECT AS MANY AS APPLY We live in a world with nail polish and napalm. We water our concrete cubes and wait. In the end, we fall into the nothingness, just like everyone else. Block my eggs. I demanded to write the notes this week because I wanted to write about my super specific niche interest, but then I realized I am too basic to have any truly niche interests. Oh, so you like Taylor Swift. You have cats. You read books. Good for you. I would have picked one of the Bioware games I'm obsessed with, but I have nowhere near enough time or space for that. So I'm just going to talk about the last book I read and really loved, which is also an incredibly basic choice: Book Lovers by Emily Henry. As of this current moment in time, it is number eight on the New York Times Bestseller List and has been there for 13 weeks. Not to brag but I've actually been an Emily Henry fan ever since her first YA novel, which she sent me an arc of in 2015 before it even came out. Yeah, that's right. I KNOW Emily Henry. Kind of. We were Twitter mutuals when she was still using it, meeting when we both got mildly harassed by the same bizarre troll account after tweeting about the just released trailer for The Giver. We used to talk about Friday Night Lights and reality TV and while it was a very casual acquaintance, it DOES continue today on Instagram. Yes, I am namedropping, but I love her, she is amazing, and it's an honor to not have been unfollowed. Anyway, I just have to say that the three adult romance books she's written are truly fantastic. Her stories are so funny and sexy and romantic and her characters feel like people that actually exist, people I could be friends with. Her plots defy the formulas so many popular romance novels stick to. Book Lovers is the best one. The specific reasons why I think this are mostly too personal to go into. Let's just say the protagonist is the unpickable career girl who doesn't want kids, and she gets a happy ending with an Oscar Isaac lookalike (a casting choice Emily has confirmed as accurate, by the way) who doesn't try to change her. When I read the last chapter, I just put it down and cried, because I felt so understood. And that is the thing I am most hoping to find before the lights go out.
