Megs isn't with us this week — Amin has appointed her Minister of Something He Just Invented and she's sensibly keeping her head down. Kev? He mentioned that he disagreed with the President once and, well... nobody seems entirely sure where Kev is now. This week we discuss: Forest Whitaker's extraordinary, Oscar-winning Idi Amin — charming, funny, frightening and capable of changing the temperature of a room in seconds. Is this one of the great performances of the 21st century? James McAvoy's Nicholas Garrigan — naïve, arrogant, selfish and frequently infuriating. How important is it that the fictional character through whom we experience this story isn't particularly likeable? Fact versus fiction — Garrigan never existed, but Amin certainly did. Does inserting a fictional white protagonist give audiences an effective route into Ugandan history, or unnecessarily place him at the centre of somebody else's tragedy? Ian breaks down the film's construction of Amin — how does the film make us understand his charisma without ever asking us to excuse what lies beneath it? Liam explores the seduction of proximity to power — Garrigan sees the warning signs remarkably early, so why does he keep finding reasons to stay? The tonal transformation — the first act occasionally feels like an exciting adventure for a young doctor abroad. Amin the man versus Amin the monster — are the moments of humour, insecurity, paranoia and apparent warmth what make Whitaker's portrayal so frightening? Garrigan's decisions — there's being naïve, there's making mistakes, and then there's Nicholas Garrigan. At what point did we stop sympathising with him and start shouting at the screen? The women in Garrigan's story — does the film recognise the consequences of his behaviour toward them, or are they too often used to propel his journey? The violence — much of the film holds back before suddenly refusing to do so. Does that restraint make the moments when Macdonald finally shows us the horror even more effective? The final act — The Last King of Scotland eventually becomes almost unbearably tense. Does turning historical atrocity into thriller mechanics enhance the film's impact or risk trivialising the reality behind it? And finally, whether The Last King of Scotland is the Best Film Ever — or a deeply uncomfortable historical drama elevated by one absolutely towering central performance. Betty Buckley is a legendary, multi-award-winning actress/singer whose career spans theater, film, television and concert halls around the world. She is a 2012 Theatre Hall of Fame inductee and the 2017 recipient of  the Julie Harris Awards from The Actor's Fund for Artistic Achievement and received The Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Songbook Association in 2023. Ms. Buckley is featured in the film By Design, written and directed by Amanda Kramer, and it made its debut at The Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. She is also featured in the film Eternity for A24 Studios, starring Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen, released in November 2025. Yes, a loom. The movie was a surprise hit the summer it opened alongside WALL-E, weeks before The Dark Knight blew everything away, and none of them had seen it since theaters. Rewatching it in 2026 was a very different experience.The conversation digs into how Wanted plays like a proto-incel power fantasy, a movie that negs its audience for 110 minutes and then stares into the camera asking "what the fuck have you done lately?" They trace the line from Fight Club and The Matrix to this film's confused politics, where the message is "be free and take charge of your life" but also "obey the magic loom or die." Emily breaks down the gendered self-loathing baked into so many films aimed at young men, and Elias connects the movie's hyper-individualism to the toxic masculinity pipeline that would migrate to social media just a year later. This book to movie adaptation was a wild wide for us. Starring Keira Knightly, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan, we took two very different stances in this recap- was Briony a confused child, filling in gaps based on limited knowledge while trying to do the right thing? Told with cinematic verve and with great performances, it's an extraordinary story which reminded him of Trainspotting. James found Keanu Reeves in Outcome, on Apple TV+, a story about a movie star worried about a bizarre video from his past, all rather too familiar and underwhelming. Directed and co-written by Jonah Hill, it's also terribly crude. He adored The President's Cake, an Iraqi film, again based on true events, made with non-actors. While the 2024 remake of 'Speak No Evil' delivers plenty of frightening moments that will have you squirming in your seat, it also carves its own distinct identity with unexpected twists. The film is anchored by superb performances from its entire cast, but one portrayal is truly a standout. As the young, non-verbal Ant, Dan Hough delivers a performance of remarkable strength and nuance, creating a character whose safety we become deeply invested in. He is the magnetic center of the film's rising tension, and it's my pleasure to have interviewed him. Join me as I sat down with Dan Hough in this interview about his debut role! This young and very talented actor delivered his role as Ant and it's an exceptional performance. Anyone who is nominated for Young British/Irish Performer of the Year for a role that has no dialogue deserves it! Dan Hough is very talented in my opinion. We spoke about how he prepared for a role that relied heavily on non-verbal communication and how he had to practice conveying his emotions, what it was like to work on set with James McAvoy and developing the on-screen dynamic with the other actors. Dan has also revealed that there is a documentary on YouTube where he revisits the set after two years and surreal because that was essentially his home for the entire duration of filming.
