This book to movie adaptation was a wild wide for us. Starring Keira Knightly, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan, we took two very different stances in this recap- was Briony a confused child, filling in gaps based on limited knowledge while trying to do the right thing? Or was Briony a little psychopath who got mad that her crush was smashing her sister, so she ruined his life? Regardless of the reason, we agreed on one thing- there is no excuse for that ending and we will be writing a letter.

Lucy Halliday lied her way into her first audition, went to medical school convinced acting would never happen for her, and is now starring opposite Elizabeth Moss in the sequel to ‘The Handmaid's Tale'. Lucy's journey to playing the rebel Pearl Girl Daisy in ‘The Testaments' has been anything but straightforward.  In this chat with Josh, Lucy opens up about landing only her third professional job, what it was like to film her first week on set with Elizabeth Moss, and the life-changing advice James McAvoy gave her on the set of California Schemin' that has become her mantra. She also talks candidly about growing up without drama school training and why she would never call herself an actor until very recently. Lucy gets into why The Testaments feel so urgent right now, why the line between the show and reality is terrifyingly thin, and what she thinks needs to change to make young women safer in society today. Oh, and she tells the full story of hyperventilating in Margaret Atwood's face, sitting elbow to elbow with her watching the first episodes back, and what Margaret pulled out of her bag at lunch that nobody was expecting…

James Cameron-Wilson found the romcom #7 You, Me & Tuscany implausible, clichéd and derivative dross. However, he adored #9 California Schemin', a true story directed by James McAvoy about a pair of Scottish wannabe rappers who pretend to be American to get noticed. Told with cinematic verve and with great performances, it's an extraordinary story which reminded him of Trainspotting. James found Keanu Reeves in Outcome, on Apple TV+, a story about a movie star worried about a bizarre video from his past, all rather too familiar and underwhelming. Directed and co-written by Jonah Hill, it's also terribly crude. He adored The President's Cake, an Iraqi film, again based on true events, made with non-actors. Heartbreaking and compelling, it's a small masterpiece, available on BFI Player and Amazon Prime. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Ok, first things first. Let's get it out of the way. Yes, the Empire Podcast team — Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent — spend a great deal of this week's podcast answering a listener question about great movie quartets. They also spend a great deal of time, in the Movie News section, talking about The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum. And yes, despite all that, they spectacularly fail to mention Bilbo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin in the former category. So, just letting you know that now lest you wish to shout at your podcast device of choice. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. Or maybe fourwarned is more apt in this case. Anyway, it's a fun episode in which our own quartet also talk Taskmaster series 21, discuss other nuggets of movie news, and review James McAvoy's directorial debut, California Schemin', Francois Ozon's The Stranger, rom-com You, Me & Tuscany, and podcasting horror, Undertone. And Chris has a lovely chat with James McAvoy, who pops into the podbooth to talk about directing for the first time. [41:45 - 1:00:32 approx] Oh, and the group make tentative and fun plans with this week's work experience person. Enjoy.

Lucy Fenwick Elliott speaks to the team behind California Schemin' including director and co-star James McAvoy, as well as the films' stars Samuel Bottomley, Séamus McLean Ross, Rebekah Murrell and Lucy Halliday.  Based on an outrageous true story, CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN' is a wild ride through ambition, identity, and the high-stakes world of musical make-believe. In the early 2000's, Dundee rappers Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd were talented, hungry, but dismissed for sounding "too Scottish" to make it in hip hop. So they hatched an audacious plan: fake American identities, re-record their tracks with Californian accents, and hustle their way into the heart of the UK music industry as “Silibil N' Brains”—childhood friends of D12 and stars-in-the-making. To their shock, the plan works. Record deals, media buzz, and gigs with hip hop legends follow. But as their deception deepens, the pressure mounts and cracks begin to show. How long can you live the dream when it's built on a lie? With bold humour, raw emotion, and a defiant spirit, CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN' is a love letter to outsiders, underdogs, and the pursuit of fame—but asks, at what cost. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. We've an actual, bona fide Hollywood movie star on the podcast this week: Professor X himself, James McAvoy. At this year's Glasgow Film Festival, the PR gods granted us ten meagre minutes with McAvoy to discuss his directorial debut, the boisterous stranger-than-fiction tale California Schemin', about two lads from Dundee who convinced the London music industry they were a rapping duo from LA. McAvoy is joined by one of his film's stars, Lucy Halliday, and they discuss the Scottish accent, McAvoy's filmmaking influences and how he goes about directing his fellow actors.  On the review front, meanwhile, we discuss two very different new features. One is Orwell: 2+2=5, Raoul Peck's serious-minded essay film on George Orwell and how his writing predicted the double-speak of the modern world. The other is Fuze, David Mackenzie's fat-free thriller set in contemporary London starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James trying out a rather silly accent. While the 2024 remake of 'Speak No Evil' delivers plenty of frightening moments that will have you squirming in your seat, it also carves its own distinct identity with unexpected twists. The film is anchored by superb performances from its entire cast, but one portrayal is truly a standout. As the young, non-verbal Ant, Dan Hough delivers a performance of remarkable strength and nuance, creating a character whose safety we become deeply invested in. He is the magnetic center of the film's rising tension, and it's my pleasure to have interviewed him. Join me as I sat down with Dan Hough in this interview about his debut role! This young and very talented actor delivered his role as Ant and it's an exceptional performance. Anyone who is nominated for Young British/Irish Performer of the Year for a role that has no dialogue deserves it! Dan Hough is very talented in my opinion. We spoke about how he prepared for a role that relied heavily on non-verbal communication and how he had to practice conveying his emotions, what it was like to work on set with James McAvoy and developing the on-screen dynamic with the other actors. Dan has also revealed that there is a documentary on YouTube where he revisits the set after two years and surreal because that was essentially his home for the entire duration of filming.

BBC One's new Sunday evening drama series The Other Bennet Sister tells the story of Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Mary Bennet, often regarded as less remarkable than her sisters Jane and Elizabeth in Jane Austen's classic novel. Screenwriter Sarah Quintrell speaks about adapting Janice Hadlow's bestselling book which offers a new perspective on the much-loved book and stars Bridgerton's Ella Bruccoleri in the lead role, as well as Ruth Jones as  mother Mrs Bennet, with Richard E Grant as Mr Bennet. We start with the critically acclaimed Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent. Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, it stars the brilliant Wagner Moura as a man on the run navigating the heights of Brazil's military dictatorship in the 1970s. It's a masterclass in tension and atmosphere.Fun Flix Fact: To achieve its stunning, retro look, the film was shot in anamorphic Panavision, the same format used for 1970s classics. The director even included a "two-faced cat" as an omen—a nod to Brazil's own dual reality of the past and the future. The Ghostface mask is back! We're reviewing the latest instalment of the legendary slasher franchise. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott, and this time, the stakes are personal as her daughter becomes the target.Fun Flix Fact: This is the first film in the entire franchise to be directed by Kevin Williamson, the man who actually wrote the original Scream (1996)! After 30 years of producing and writing, he finally stepped behind the camera to bring the Woodsboro story full circle. Finally for our main reviews, we're heading to the 19th-century Caribbean for The Bluff. Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays a woman with a secret past who must protect her family when vicious buccaneers (led by a terrifying Karl Urban) invade her island.Fun Flix Fact: Priyanka Chopra Jonas performed a massive amount of her own stunts for this film. Drawing on her extensive background in Bollywood action cinema, she reportedly surprised the stunt team with her "hard-hitting physicality" during the brutal home-invasion sequences. To tie into the political intrigue of The Secret Agent, we're celebrating 20 years of the film that earned Forest Whitaker his well-deserved Oscar. We revisit the terrifying regime of Idi Amin through the eyes of his personal Scottish doctor (James McAvoy).Fun Flix Fact: Forest Whitaker was so dedicated to the role that he stayed in character as Idi Amin even when the cameras weren't rolling. He learned to play the accordion, mastered the Ugandan accent, and even met with Amin's real-life brother and former cabinet members to perfect the performance. For this week's Hidden Gem, we're recommending the epic historical musical The Testament of Ann Lee. Amanda Seyfried stars as the founding leader of the Shakers in 18th-century Manchester and America.Fun Flix Fact: This is a rare breed—a "historical musical" shot on 70mm film! It features more than a dozen traditional Shaker hymns reimagined as rapturous musical numbers. If you loved Amanda in Les Misérables, you absolutely cannot miss her powerhouse vocals here. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Press play for the friendliest film discussions this side of Hollywood! Nick looks back at Season 44 of Saturday Night Live, a year that found the show in strong form and introduced Ego Nwodim as a standout new cast member. The regular lineup was stacked with reliable heavy hitters, including Heidi Gardner, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Pete Davidson, and more, giving the season a solid mix of energy and consistency. The host list was just as impressive, with turns from John Mulaney, Sandra Oh, Idris Elba, Don Cheadle, and a deep bench of memorable appearances. Highlights from episodes hosted by Emma Stone, Awkwafina, Claire Foy, Paul Rudd, Adam Sandler, Adam Driver, Emma Thompson, and James McAvoy get their due, along with context around the musical guests and what was happening behind the scenes. It's a thoughtful, entertaining walkthrough of a season that delivered laughs, strong performances, and plenty of moments worth revisiting. [Ep 157]

Send us a textThree teenagers are taken. A man with 23 personalities holds the key. And somewhere between adrenaline, trauma, and belief, a monster takes shape. We pull Split apart scene by scene to ask the questions the movie dares us to consider: what's real about Dissociative Identity Disorder, what's pure cinematic myth, and how should a survivor respond when seconds count. We start with the craft. James McAvoy's performance is a clinic in subtlety—posture shifts, eye focus, compulsive tidying, even a pulsing vein that signals Dennis before the script tells you. We connect those choices to the film's larger world, tracing threads back to Unbreakable and forward to Glass, and debate the line between a grounded thriller and a superhuman fable. The “Beast” stretches plausibility, but we explore why the idea resonates: the brain's role in pain tolerance, stress responses, and the way belief can change behavior—if not biology. Then we get practical. The rule we hammer home: never go to a second location. We analyze the missed opportunities the characters had—striking once and fleeing, hiding in predictable spots, dropping improvised weapons too soon—and translate them into tactics that work in real life. Target small, fragile points like eyes, throat, and fingers. Use what's around you: chairs, bottles, cleaning agents. Make noise, leave DNA, and if disgust helps, weaponize it. Unpredictability can break a predator's selection process, but nothing is guaranteed, so stack the odds with decisive action.Underneath the thrills lies a harder truth: trauma shapes people in complex ways. The film humanizes Kevin without excusing violence, and Casey recognizes the scars because she carries her own. That tension—empathy without naivete—fuels a deeper takeaway: prepare your mind now, so your body knows what to do when fear floods your system. If you're into survival strategy, film analysis, and the messy intersection of psychology and action, this one will stay with you.If this breakdown got you thinking, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves smart thrillers, and drop a review with your biggest takeaway or question—we'll feature the best in a future episode.

The Doomsday footage suggests a Doom who mixes sorcery and engineering. Runes, sigils, and visuals hint at a villain who can carry multiverse-level stakes. Star Trek is gearing up for a busy 60th year with new shows, a kids series on YouTube to hook the next generation, a scripted Khan audio drama, and a LEGO partnership. Emmys 77 landed well for comedy and recognized top craft like Andor's writing. Studio earned the “actual comedy” praise many fans were looking for. The Midjourney suit could set important lines around training on copyrighted works. The show breaks down the difference between commentary fair use and model training. DCU chatter points to Brainiac as the smart next-step foil that forces a Lex and Superman team-up, while keeping the multiverse in check. Community notes: Geek Freaks will be out at events, and the Network has new episodes across the slate. Quotes “It looks comic accurate. More than I thought it would be.” “They're really good at visual storytelling in the MCU. This is the next facet of that.” “Studio is what The Bear pretended to be for years.” “We're in the early stages of the law. Chris Paul and Burning Bright take on M. Night Shyamalan's Split, unpacking its psychological horror and deeper symbolic layers. They highlight James McAvoy's performance as Kevin Wendell Crumb and his 23 personalities, drawing parallels to narrative warfare and how media offers different “alters” of the same central message. The hosts dive into the good twin/evil twin dynamic, centralization versus decentralization, and how propaganda thrives on consensus while truth does not. Their discussion branches into Trump's communication style, trauma as both a weapon and a source of resilience, and how cultural manipulation echoes MK Ultra–style conditioning. They also examine connections to modern gender debates, linking the “they/them” identity to collectivism versus sovereignty, and the biblical concept of Legion as hive-minded evil. Closing thoughts tie Casey's survival, rooted in her scars and trauma, to humanity's antifragility and the danger of weaponized victimhood. This episode blends film critique, philosophy, and cultural analysis, showing how Split serves as a metaphor for narrative control, sovereignty, and the battle between good and evil.

Today, we catch up with James McAvoy, originally episode 133 from 2017-01-18.Original writeup below!A true smash of an episode right here as we welcome aboard the man with many faces, James McAvoy! Pip was able to snag some time with the warm and inviting Glasgow heavyweight to get in deep about his new film 'Split', directed by M Night Shyamalan, which is released on January 20th. The film concerns a main character with 'DID' (Dissociative Identity Disorder), played by James, who has an internal cast of around 23 personalities which we see rotate throughout the film. Surely an epic undertaking for any actor, and James breaks down his experience and how he approached this huge role. We hear how his past drama school days informed his outlook on his profession and how it can assist any actor's career, the film industry in general and Scotland's part in it, his acting past and in general, much science overall!...PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast.
