“You are loved, warts and all.” Bishop Emeritus Patrick J. McGrath of San Jose said it at every confirmation—and liturgist Diana Macalintal never tired of hearing it. In this episode of “Preach,” she recalls a bishop's confirmation homily that “quickly devolved into an exploration of sin and evil,” complete with exorcisms and damnation. Like composing music, this preacher “did not emphasize the right notes—the right message,” she says. “Confirmation is all about strengthening the goodness that is in there, giving us the grace to do the hard things, to do the beautiful things in the world.” But don't avoid reality either. “For those who are being confirmed, these are oftentimes teenagers where real life is life and death. Whether it is or not, it is drama all the time.” Name those struggles, she urges, “in the context of this gift of the Spirit and how they can do their part in the mission of Christ.” Diana also challenges a common assumption: there's no obligation to choose a saint's name at confirmation. Church teaching honors our given names as "icons of a person." At St. Columba in Oakland, Calif., her historically Black parish, "for so many, their ancestors' names were taken away" during enslavement. In October of 1948, Billy Graham and his ministry team — Cliff Barrows, George Beverly Shea and Grady Wilson — held evangelistic meetings in Modesto, Calif. These men gathered in their spare time to write what Barrows came to call the “Modesto Manifesto.” That document outlined the standards they would follow regarding “financial integrity, sexual morality, publicity, and partnership with the local church.” However, the organizations led by Billy Graham's son Franklin recently withdrew from the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) because they did not want the ECFA to act as “moral police” for the evangelical world. On this week's episode of Women Speak — a segment on Northeast Newscast — hosts Northeast News Editor-in-Chief, Julia Williams and former Missouri House Representative for District 19 Ingrid Burnett sat down with Judy Ancel — labor educator formerly with the University of Missouri Kansas City Institute for Labor Studies, executive producer of The Heartland Labor Forum Radio Show on KKFI 90.1 FM and president of Cross Border network — to continue our series on women in education.Throughout this episode, Ancel delves into how she landed her show on KKFI as well as how she became involved in labor education, which she refers to as her “dream job.” She shares her introduction into activism, which began when she was a junior in high school. Ancel goes on to mention how her passion for activism continued through her years as a student at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and eventually led her to her career in labor and labor education in Kansas City. Ancel goes on to discuss what she is most proud of in her journey so far and some people who have inspired her along the way.Williams shares a brief history and statistics of women involved in radio throughout the years and Ancel includes how those numbers are reflected through local radio today. Ancel discusses ways the community can volunteer and get involved with KKFI for those interested. Williams goes on to mention the woman who is considered the first lady of radio including her background — inclusive of Missouri roots — and industry influence. Between 2003 and 2006, four sex workers disappeared from Las Vegas. Three of the girls are were confirmed to have been murdered after various pieces of their body's were found at various locations in or near Las Vegas, besides one woman whose legs were found in Springfield. The Vegas Four:Lindsay Marie Harris: On May 4, 2005, Harris disappeared from her home in Henderson, Nevada. She was last seen making a bank deposit at the bank near her home. Her rental car was found abandoned in the desert at the southern end of the valley and her credit cards had not been used. Later that November, America's Most Wanted aired a segment on Harris' disappearance.On May 23, 2005, a group of children discovered human legs in a grassy field a couple hundred yards away from Interstate 55 in Divernon, Illinois, 15 miles south of Springfield. After performing DNA tests on both of the legs, it was determined that they both belonged to the same person.In May 2008, the FBI was able to match the DNA of the unidentified woman that was sent in by Illinois authorities to Harris' DNA sent in by authorities in Henderson. After comparing the two DNA samples, the woman's legs were identified as Lindsay Harris.Harris had moved to the valley in 2003 with her boyfriend, whom she had met in New York. Harris had a history of being a sex worker, as Harris had been arrested 5 times for prostitution from the time she had moved to the valley to the time of her disappearance.Misty Marie Saens:Misty Marie Saens, who was 25 when she disappeared from Las Vegas the same month as Brewer. Partial remains were found in the desert on a road leading to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas.Jessica Edith Louise Foster:Foster was one of four sex workers who disappeared in Las Vegas between 2003 and 2006. The bodies of the other three have been found. The Las Vegas Police Department launched an investigation of a person in question, bringing in a forensic scientist to spray luminol onto surfaces at crime scenes to detect invisible blood stains; but found nothing at his property, nor has he been interrogated on her disappearance. The documentary Trafficked No More, features her story and led to some tips to her whereabouts.Jodi Marie Brewer:The last time Pamela Brewer saw her 19-year-old daughter Jodi Marie, the teen's newly dyed blonde hair glowed like a halo around her head.Standing at the top of the stairs in their southwest Las Vegas condominium, she told her mother she was going out for the evening."She was so radiant, so beautiful that night," Brewer said. "She said, 'I love you mom' ... I told her I'd see her tomorrow.' "But Jodi Brewer didn't come home.After filing a missing person report with Metro and enduring several agonizing weeks of waiting and wondering, she learned Aug. 29 that the body of a woman had been discovered in San Bernardino County, Calif.The description of the tattoos on the body matched her daughter's. It was Jodi.In this episode, we begin our comprehensive look at the Las Vegas Four and their tragic tale as we explore the possiblity that they might be related to Rex Heuermann. Three years ago, I explored one of California's most tragic true crime cases: the disappearance and murder of the McStay family, Summer and Joseph McStay, and their two young sons, Gianni and Joey Jr., on February 4, 2010. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. Evidence has emerged that could change our understanding of the 9/11 terrorist attacks more than two decades ago. A 60 Minutes investigation has found that crucial information, initially turned over to the FBI shortly after the attacks, was never shared with the bureau's own field agents or senior intelligence officials. Correspondent Cecilia Vega reports on this evidence, which has come to light amid a lawsuit against the Saudi government filed by families of the nearly 3,000 victims and includes a video of a Saudi national filming the U.S. Capitol, thought to be al-Qaeda's fourth target. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi travels to Costa Mesa, Calif., to meet with Palmer Luckey, the 32-year-old tech billionaire who founded Anduril, a defense products company that makes autonomous weapons, some already in use by the U.S. military and in the war in Ukraine. Alfonsi explores the artificial intelligence that powers Anduril's systems and reports on some of the company's most advanced weapons, including a submarine that operates without sailors. While several international groups refer to lethal autonomous weapons as “killer robots,” Luckey says that these innovations represent the future of warfare. Correspondent Bill Whitaker reports from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, a Marian shrine in Southern France and the site of 72 medical miracles recognized by the Catholic Church. 60 Minutes goes inside the Lourdes Office of Medical Observations, where world-renowned doctors and researchers conduct decade-long investigations into the dozens of claims of miraculous cures made every year.
