Após quatro anos, deixou a empresa para se dedicar à distribuição das bicicletas Santa Cruz no Brasil. Fez a transição do downhill para o enduro e passou a competir tanto na América Latina quanto no Enduro World Series. Em 2018, decidiu retornar aos EUA para fazer um mestrado em Ciências Estatísticas, estabelecendo residência na Califórnia. Lecionou marketing na Universidade da Califórnia e atuou no PayPal antes de expandir seu negócio no mercado de ciclismo, acrescentando a importação das bicicletas da Factor e Yeti para o Brasil, inaugurando duas lojas no país e uma em Los Angeles, consolidando assim sua paixão, experiência e know-how. The mission of WELS Ministry to the Military is to make Word and sacrament available to our actively serving military members and their families. To carry out this mission, the Wisconsin Synod provides financial support for 25 percent of our operating expenses. The other 75 percent comes from generous gifts from you. This past year WELS Ministry to the Military received $154,000 in gifts. Thank you! Your generosity and the work we do together as a synod reminds me of the apostle Paul's words to the Christians in Philippi: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:3-6). Because of your generosity this past year, I was able to travel to 10 duty stations (including one aircraft carrier and 3 duty stations overseas), 16 congregations, 3 high schools, and 2 grade schools. This included a trip to Okinawa this past January where we led a retreat for service members who came from Guam, Japan, South Korea, and Okinawa. Because of your generosity, our office mailed 130 Spiritual Deployment Kits to service members around the world, not to mention a number of hymnals, catechisms, and devotion books. Thanks to you, 135 new referrals came in through our website. We were able to train seven Distinctive Religious Group Leaders to lead Bible study and worship in places we can't be. Five more are being trained right now. I want to say thank you to our European chaplain, Rob Weiss, and his wife, Rachel, for their faithful, dedicated service all over Europe: Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Poland. Thank you to the WELS pastors, teachers, and staff ministers who encourage and support our military service members, who show compassion and care to the family members when their service member is away from home. Thank you to all the grade schools, pastors' and teachers' conferences, and churches who adopted our ministry for their mission offering designation. Thank you to the WELS pastors and lay leaders who serve as contacts at numerous duty stations around the country, especially those who take extra time to visit our young people during basic training. I'd like to highlight Hope in Irmo, S.C., for serving Fort Jackson; Immanuel in Waukegan, Ill., for serving Great Lakes; Our Savior in San Antonio, Texas, for serving Lackland Air Force Base; and Risen Savior in Chula Vista, Calif., for serving Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD). At MCRD Pastor Paul Schulz leads the Lutheran service on Sunday mornings. This past year the Holy Spirit blessed Pastor Schulz' efforts with an average Sunday worship attendance of 47 recruits, and he was privileged to baptize 25 Marine Corps recruits. Thank you to the congregations in the Colorado Springs area for adopting Air Force cadets at the Academy and being their home away from home. Thank you to the Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG) for their partnership. Because of their generosity, we led a Military Contact Pastor workshop near Hill Air Force Base in Layton, Utah, this past May. In Episode 2 of "Exposed"  from our friends at San Francisco Public Press, we explore a little-known chapter in San Francisco's nuclear era: human experiments carried out to assess the health effects of radiation. Scientists from the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, located at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, designed and executed at least 24 experiments that involved gathering data from humans — in some cases, injecting test subjects with radioisotopes or having them ingest fluids laced with trace amounts of radioactive materials. Even football players from the San Francisco 49ers were enrolled as test subjects in these so-called tracer studies. We hear from military veterans who were sent on a mysterious mission to spread radioactive substances onto rooftops at an Army base near Pittsburg, Calif., for an experiment the radiation lab played a role in designing. Some recount experiences of witnessing nuclear bomb blasts in the Nevada desert. We also examine a national pattern of human radiation experiments revealed by Eileen Welsome, the author of a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation, who shined a light on similar practices conducted by government facilities, hospitals and other institutions.  This miniseries first aired on Making Contact in February 2025. As memórias de quem viveu um centenário e presenciou o bombardeio a Hiroshima ultrapassam fronteiras de tempo, espaço e linguagem, mas ganharam forma sensível e poética no curta-metragem  'Alma Errante - Hibakusha'. O documentário mergulha no imaginário de Takashi Morita, sobrevivente da bomba atômica, ex-soldado da Guarda Imperial japonesa e ativista pela paz, que faleceu no Brasil, em 2024, aos 100 anos. Dirigida pelo cineasta Joel Yamaji, a produção fez sua estreia internacional no 26º Festival de Cinema Asiático de San Diego, na Califórnia, no domingo (9). Cleide Klock, correspondente da RFI em Los Angeles O projeto começou há quase três décadas, quando o cineasta conheceu a família Morita em São Paulo, em 1996. Desde lá, Yamaji acumulou horas de imagens e depoimentos até encontrar a forma que desejava. Mais do que um registro histórico, o filme é um poema visual. “Não queria explorar o sofrimento em forma de espetáculo. Queria um filme sobre a paz, sobre aqueles que passaram pela guerra e continuaram. É sobre a superação", conta o diretor. Yamaji define o curta como uma obra que ultrapassa o documentário tradicional, mistura gerações em uma metáfora de convivência. “Eu sempre acho que a poesia no cinema é necessária, ainda mais num mundo em guerra. O Sr. Takashi sempre professou a paz, então quis fazer um filme que fosse um poema, não uma denúncia", diz Yamaji. A herança da memória e a mensagem de paz A filha do Sr. Takashi, Yasuko Morita, veio a San Diego para a apresentação de 'Alma Errante - Hibakusha'. Ela acompanha a trajetória do filme, do legado e das memórias dos pais que ouvia desde criança, ambos sobreviventes de Hiroshima. “Além deles serem um casal muito unido, eram companheiros da mesma lembrança. Eu e meu irmão crescemos ouvindo essas histórias. Eles eram vítimas de uma mesma tragédia, mas unidos pela esperança. Meu pai nunca falou mal de ninguém. Quando perguntavam se ele tinha raiva dos Estados Unidos, ele dizia: ‘Não. Eu tenho raiva da guerra', contou Yasuko. Ela relembrou ainda que seu pai dedicou a vida a campanhas sobre a paz e à Associação de Sobreviventes da Bomba Atômica no Brasil, criada por ele para garantir assistência médica e promover campanhas de conscientização. “As nossas campanhas pela paz sempre foram voltadas aos jovens, para entenderem que a bomba atômica não pode andar com a humanidade. Meu pai dizia: ‘Hiroshima foi a primeira. Nagasaki tem que ser a última", disse ela. Yasuko reforça o simbolismo de trazer o filme agora aos Estados Unidos, país que lançou a bomba e que há poucos dias o presidente Donald Trump falou em retornar os testes nucleares. Ela relembra a última conversa que teve com o pai. "As últimas falas do meu pai antes de falecer me tocaram bastante. Ele falou assim: 'A gente não fez o suficiente, olhe como está o mundo agora'. Eu disse: 'Mas o senhor fez o que podia. E o resto tem que ficar para outras pessoas continuarem.' Depois de dois meses que ele tinha falecido, uma entidade de sobreviventes lá do Japão, com quem nós tínhamos bastante contato, foi premiada com o Prêmio Nobel da Paz. Eu pensei, papai, o senhor iria ficar tão orgulhoso!", finaliza.

The Washington Monthly called him as "one of America's most important journalists." The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy.
