Pablo Arredondo, the Casetext cofounder who helped build some of the earliest and most influential applications of AI in legal practice, is joining Clio as senior vice president, judiciary, where he will lead the company's strategy for extending its technology into the courts. In this episode, recorded just ahead of the announcement, Arredondo tells host Bob Ambrogi why he is turning his attention to the judiciary — and why he believes the challenge starts with the sheer torrent of material flooding into the courts. "On Monday, somewhere on the order of three billion tokens are going to hit court dockets," he says. Arredondo cofounded Casetext in 2013 and helped develop CARA, the first brief analyzer, and CoCounsel, the product that brought generative AI into everyday legal workflows. After Thomson Reuters acquired Casetext for $650 million in 2023, he joined that company, leaving at the end of last year. In this conversation, he traces how his interest shifted toward the courts — from watching judges organically adopt Casetext's Parallel Search to a recent project at Cornell's Legal Information Institute using LLMs to annotate the U.S. Code of Conduct for Judges with centuries of judicial ethics thinking from rabbinic, Islamic and Roman Catholic traditions. Arredondo also explains why courts need "judiciary grade" technology rather than tools built for lawyers, how AI is driving a surge in pro se filings, whether AI could ever replace judges (his short answer: "absolutely not"), and where he plans to start when he officially begins the role Aug. 31. The image of Rosie the Riveter flexing her bicep beneath the words "We Can Do It!" has become an enduring symbol. The iconic poster represents the millions of women who stepped into factories, shipyards and assembly lines during World War II, including Minnesota-raised Jeanne Gibson.Gibson, who died on July 29 at age 100, grew up in Minneapolis before heading to Seattle to help build Navy destroyers as a welder during the war. In the decades that followed, she dedicated herself to making sure the stories like hers would not be forgotten, volunteering at the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, Calif.Tammy Brumley is a fellow volunteer known as the park's "Rosie Wrangler.” She was also a close friend of Gibson's in her final years of life. Brumley said the women known as “Rosies” were essential to victory in World War II when they took on jobs that had traditionally been for men after millions left to serve in the military."They stepped up," Brumley told Minnesota Now guest host Kelly Gordon. "Whether it was typical riveters or welders, or people making parachute pins or K-rations, anything for the war effort.”That history becomes more urgent to preserve with each passing year, Brumley said. While a handful of Rosies are still alive, their numbers continue to dwindle.For Jeanne Gibson, the path to becoming a Rosie began in Minneapolis. She was a student at Southwest High School when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. As a teen, she hoped to become a veterinarian but the nearest veterinary school rejected her application because she was a woman. Gibson briefly enrolled in the University of Minnesota's Cadet Nurse Corps program before deciding nursing wasn't the right fit for her. She and a friend headed west to Seattle, where they both became welders at Todd Pacific Shipyards.Brumley said Gibson had a gift for explaining welding and even found it fun."She describes welding kind of like sewing," Brumley said. "You would tack the item first, which is like basting, and then you would do the welding, which is like sewing. You would just coax that molten metal along."Working union jobs during the war exposed Gibson to something many women had never experienced before: equal pay for equal work. But after the war ended, she quickly encountered discrimination again.Brumley said Gibson left one job after discovering she was earning less than a male file clerk because she was a woman. At another position, she was told she wouldn't advance because she was expected to get married, have children and leave the workforce.But Gibson didn't accept those limitations. She quit those jobs and continued her education, earning a master's and doctorate degree from the University of California, Berkeley.Gibson went on to spend her career as a teacher, and spent her retirement volunteering every Friday to tell her story as a Rosie at Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park.Brumley said that even in her final days, Gibson remained committed to telling the Rosie story. Just a week before her death, she appeared before before a crowd for the halftime of a professional soccer game to continue advocating for the women who helped reshape the American workforce.Gibson viewed those appearances as an extension of her decades-long career as a teacher, according to Brumley."It gave her another opportunity to teach Americans their history and to help young girls understand the message to advocate for themselves and never take no for an answer," Brumley said.Gibson received many accolades for her work, including a Congressional Gold Medal in 2024, the National WWII Museum's American Spirit Award in 2026 and just last month, a banner of her own at the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park.Gibson often joked that she would die with her boots on. In the end, Brumley said, she did. He finished his career as Chief of Staff for Joint Task Force Homeland Defense and Deputy Chief of Staff for U.S. Army Pacific. For 13 of those years, he and his wife, Christine, walked through their son's mental health crisis, a season no military school prepared him for. In this episode, Chae talks with host Josh Jackson about the difference between competence and dependence, why his prayers once sounded like mission briefings, and how a solitary drive to a hospital in Pasadena, Calif., reshaped the way he talks to God. If you've been trained to project strength while privately carrying something you can't fix, this conversation offers a hard-won picture of God's providence—usually visible only in the rearview mirror. Questions answered and themes covered in this interview include: How do you find your identity in Christ after retiring from the military? Start by separating who you are from what you've done. Rank, position, and assignment all change; identity in Christ doesn't. Twenty years ago, Chae says, he would have answered the identity question with "I'm an Army officer, I'm a Ranger, airborne." Today he answers first as a follower of Jesus Christ, then as Christine's husband and a father—and everything else, he says, is simply something he has done. That reordering came shortly after retirement, when he realized someone else was sitting in his office, someone else was commanding his units, and life just kept moving. He describes God asking him a direct question in that season: "Who are you now?" Titles were never meant to define him. They were window dressing. Why do my prayers feel like a mission briefing? Because military training teaches you to arrive with the problem already solved—and that habit follows you into prayer. Chae's prayers, by his own account, followed the briefing format: explain the problem, present the proposed solution, ask God to bless the plan. He wasn't intentionally excluding God; he simply assumed he already understood what needed to happen. The danger of leadership, he says, is believing that a careful enough plan and enough hard work can solve almost anything. Eventually a season arrived where no rank, no leadership training, no planning process, and no amount of grit produced an answer. He now calls that one of the greatest gifts God gave him, because it taught him the difference between competence and dependence—and mature Christian leadership, he argues, requires both. How do I trust God when I can't fix my child's problem? You trust God's character instead of your own ability to solve it. Chae and Christine walked a 13-year journey with a son in a mental health crisis, initially diagnosed as a lifelong condition. From the outside, the family looked fine—promotions, a strong marriage, active in church. Inside, he faced something none of his skills touched: gathering information, developing courses of action, deciding, leading. He kept asking God to change the circumstances and heal his son; looking back, he believes God was changing him instead, exposing where he trusted his own ability over God's authority and sovereignty. Faith, as he defines it, isn't confidence in what you hold in your hands—it's confidence that God remains good whether you understand his plan or not. What held them together was finding a private place and praying out loud together. How do you pray when you're angry at God? Pray honestly, without a mask—anger, tears, and unanswered questions included. Chae's most formative prayer wasn't composed or reverent. He was alone in a car, driving to the hospital where his son was, yelling and weeping, asking God why an innocent child at the very start of his life had to go through this. In the silence afterward, he sensed God's answer: "Now you know how you should pray to me." He anchors this in Psalm 22, which he says gives him permission to be honest with God without pretense or protocol. If David (and later Jesus) could say "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1), nothing needs hiding from a God who already sees the heart. The same season changed what he asks for—less "fix this, Lord," more "what do you want to teach me today?" How do you know God's will for your future as a Christian? Stop trying to figure out God's plan for 10 years from now and start walking faithfully with him today. God is the only one who lives on what Chae calls "the far side of the future"—he already knows tomorrow, and the lamp you're holding only lights the ground directly in front of you. Chae tells the story of a young manager who had decided he'd change jobs in a year; Chae asked whether every decision between now and then would be colored by that plan. A week later the man dropped it and committed to being faithful to his team—"Don't worry, God's got you." Chae's own summary of Jesus is blunt: don't worry about tomorrow, seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33-34). Give today the effort God assigned you, and be able to say you were loyal to it. Why can't I see God's plan while I'm going through it? You usually don't see it in the moment—you see it looking back. Chae puts it this way: nothing in the windshield helped him figure out what the future held for his sons or his family. But in the rearview mirror he sees all of it—God's faithfulness, goodness, and purpose he couldn't have identified while he was living it. He describes being embarrassed, in hindsight, by how much energy he spent on the horrifying feeling of not knowing what came next, only to look back and say, "Oh. Okay. Now I see." His own immigration story reads the same way: born in London, back to Korea, then to New York and Chicago at 12 as his father chased a better education for the family. He didn't recognize God's providence at the time. He sees it now. Asked what he'll say first in heaven, his answer is one word—aha—because that's where he'll finally see all of it. When Ishi walked into Oroville, Calif. in 1911, newspapers around the country trumpeted the news with headlines like "Last Wild Indian." He was the last of the Yahi, a tribe of indigenous Californians, who had been decimated by genocide, disease and loss of food sources. Ishi was taken to San Francisco, where he was studied by anthropologists, given housing and a job. Today his story raises questions about how he was treated, ethics in the field of anthropology, and how he's portrayed. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's executive order imposing a one-year moratorium or "pause" on new "hyperscale" data centers seems to be a ploy to undercut a more stringent measure passed by the state legislature. But it still represents an important victory—of course being met with outrage by the Trump regime. Monterey Park, Calif., has meanwhile become the first US city to impose an outright ban on data centers via ballot initiative. There is a growing municipal revolt against data centers in the Golden State—although Gov. Gavin Newsom is still wedded to the AI agenda, placing him in line with the Trump White House. The turn of public opinion is slowing expansion of the industry, which is a real sign of hope. The challenge is to translate this into a popular repudiation of artificial intelligence altogether, and build a movement for abolition. This is Part 12 in a series celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Harvard University Press' 1985 publication of Richard A. Epstein's "Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain." We continue our celebration of this anniversary with a fair use and transformative reading, taking a close look at ch. 7 continuing in the same section which Richard calls ""Takings Prima Facia," which takes a look at selling Eagle feathers when mere possession is a crime, as well as rights to disposition in leasehold renewals. He titles chapter 7, "Rights of Disposition and Contract" because he's taking a look at what the judiciary often misses in the panoply of takings reached by the Eminent Domain Clause and the American constitutional order, how these things interact and hang together, ensconced as it is in the purpose of the Constitution. That moral purpose is the protection of individual liberty against claims by a simple majority in a democracy, or judicial or executive fiat, or by the government in any other way in a taking of private property. It's also a good reflection on nature of property per se, whether public or private. For governments are owners as well as takers of property. Today we discuss his chapter 7 from pp. 74 to the top of p. 80. At the end, this episode concludes with a Chaplain's corner, with a reading of Psalm 142 in the KJV and January 31st in Streams in the Desert (Cowman Publications, Lost Feliz Station Lost Angeles, Calif. 1925 original non-woke edition). On Friday, I moderated a forum with the top Democratic candidates for California governor, focusing on the state's housing crisis. California's current governor, Gavin Newsom, came into office in 2019 promising to build millions of homes. And in the years since, dozens of pro-housing laws have passed, designed to cut red tape and spur more construction. And yet the number of homes being built in California is basically the same as when he took office, and the state's housing crisis remains, arguably, the worst in the country. So I wanted to know what the next governor would do about it. We taped this at the Calvin Simmons Theater in Oakland, Calif. The candidates on the stage were Xavier Becerra, a former attorney general of California and health and human services secretary under President Joe Biden; Matt Mahan, the mayor of San Jose and a tech entrepreneur; Katie Porter, a former U.S. representative; Tom Steyer, a former San Francisco hedge fund manager, a climate activist and a philanthropist; and Antonio Villaraigosa, a former mayor of Los Angeles and speaker of the California State Assembly.
