It was a late night, but a solid win for the Galaxy, who are now just 1 of 4 teams from Major League Soccer to advance. On today's show, host Josh Guesman talks about Leagues Cup making a mistake with the start time for the Galaxy's game and why they're going to compound that mistake by doing it again for the Galaxy's match against Pachuca. Mauricio Cuevas is making waves in Leagues Cup and that could mean some additional eyes are on him during an open transfer window. Could the Galaxy move him if it means creating some cash for a solid move? Plus, Seattle comes to Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday. The first depth chart of the 2025 season came out this week for the New Orleans Saints, and the word “or” showed up quite a bit, especially at the quarterback position. Will we find out more from watching the first preseason game Sunday vs. the Los Angeles Chargers? Also, the team will be spending 10 days practicing in Irvine, Calif., where it will be (slightly) cooler. Hopefully, that will allow them to get more done and get some of those aforementioned questions answered. Jim Derry tries to beat Coach Kellen Moore to the punch with Wednesday's guest, FOX-8's Garland Gillen, on the Dattitude Podcast (Ep. 399) presented by Evangeline Securities. The duo also will talk a little LSU and Tulane, and Gabe Henderson has thoughts on Shedeur Sanders being named the starter for Cleveland's first preseason game and the NFL making a deal with ESPN. We also preview show No. 400 with Jim Henderson.

On a special Thursday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insider Brian Batko joins host Adam Bittner to analyze the team's receiving options following the acquisition of Jonnu Smith. Will OC Arthur Smith use the tight end more as a WR2 behind DK Metcalf? Given that Smith put up big receiving options last year with the Miami Dolphins? How will his presence impact the target share for guys like Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods? And can we put talk of signing free agents like Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen, Gabe Davis and Allen Lazard to rest with Smith in the fold? In the second segment, the guys talk safety options. Could GM Omar Khan try to sign one before training camp, with names like Justin Simmons, Julian Blackmon and Marcus Williams still available via NFL free agency? How much will Jalen Ramsey himself fill the void left by Minkah Fitzpatrick? What are reasonable expectations for Juan Thornhill? And what happens to the safety group if DeShon Elliott gets hurt. Our duo tackles those topics, plus some quick-hitters in the third segment. Have the Steelers really been doing things much differently under Khan? Or have they been more aggressive for a while now without perceptions of them keeping u[? Will Aaron Rodgers get any benefit from working with his receivers this week in Malibu, Calif.? And what should fans want to hear from Ramsey at his introduction?

California Man Allegedly Murdered Neighbors Over $1 Hot Dog Dispute at Nudist Ranch REDLANDS, Calif. — A 62-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder after allegedly beating his neighbors to death and dismembering their bodies—an act prosecutors say was sparked by a perceived insult involving a hot dog. Michael Royce Sparks is accused of killing Daniel and Stephanie Menard, a longtime couple who lived near him at the Olive Dell Nudist Ranch in Redlands. The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office announced the charges Tuesday, which also include two special circumstance allegations for committing multiple murders. Sparks' arraignment is set for Wednesday. According to Detective Thomas Williams, Sparks confided to a fellow inmate that his deadly outburst began when Daniel Menard bought him a hot dog. Sparks reportedly believed the $1 snack was a slight against his worth, telling the inmate he felt it was a “jab” at him. “He said that's what set him off,” Williams testified during a Monday hearing. Sparks then allegedly went outside and struck Daniel in the head until “his head caved in.” When Stephanie Menard ran out screaming, Sparks reportedly attacked both victims with a rake, hoe, and hammer, according to the detective's account of Sparks' jailhouse confession. The Menards were reported missing on Sunday, August 25, after failing to show up for church. Their neighbor, Irene Ingkref, said the couple had lived at their property for decades and were last seen around 10 a.m. the day before. When investigators arrived, they found the Menards' vehicle down the road—unlocked, keys inside—and both of their cell phones and Mrs. Menard's purse left behind in the home. Their dog, Cuddles, remains missing. At first, authorities treated the case as a missing persons investigation. Over the next four days, police and volunteers scoured the rugged terrain surrounding the nudist community. But the case took a grim turn on August 29 when a former coworker and a relative in Minnesota reported receiving alarming texts from Sparks. Gale Heidelberg, a dispatcher at a diesel repair shop where Sparks once worked as a truck driver, testified that she reached out after seeing news coverage. She texted, “I am watching the news. Something going on where you live. Are you in town?” Sparks replied, “It's me. Committing suicide today. Take care. Bye.” When she pressed him for clarification, Sparks responded chillingly: “Chopped up my neighbors. Didn't know I had it in me. SNAPPED.” Redlands police quickly zeroed in on Sparks' trailer at Space 43. Detective Laurel Shearer testified that a foul odor was already emanating from the property. Officers tried to contact Sparks, who refused to come out. Redlands police ultimately used a tractor to dismantle the trailer. Inside, officers found Sparks hiding in a bunker with a long rifle. He attempted to take his own life, but the gun jammed. When asked where the Menards were and if they needed help, Sparks allegedly replied, “They're underneath the trailer… they don't need help,” before adding, “They're in pieces.” Authorities later confirmed they discovered human remains and additional evidence tied to the crime, though the coroner is still working to officially identify the bodies. During Tuesday's press conference, Redlands Police Chief Rachel Tolber emphasized the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community in locating the missing couple and bringing the case forward. District Attorney Jason Anderson said his office is confident in pursuing the charges, stating, “You don't get a free murder. We believe Mr. Sparks is responsible for both.” If convicted on all charges, including the special circumstances, Sparks could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. The newlyweds, Alvin and Gladys, were on a little vacation at the Big Chief Auto Court in Truckee, Calif. — it may have been their honeymoon — when they went out together to the local cinema to see “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” It was September of 1946, so it was the old film-noir version starring Lana Turner. As you'll surely remember if you've seen it (or a more recent remake of it), this is a film in which Turner's character, Cora Smith, seduces a drifter named Frank and convinces him to murder her husband for her so that the two of them can take over ownership of his restaurant. After the film, Gladys was in a pensive mood as she turned to Alvin, the eager 23-year-old cowboy she'd married in Reno a day or two before. “It's too bad something like that can't happen to the doctor,” she remarked to him, innocuously. By “the doctor,” she meant Dr. Willis Broadhurst, a prominent Jordan Valley rancher and chiropractor — her other husband. Or, rather, one of her other husbands. At that particular moment, Gladys, a strikingly pretty and charismatic 40-year-old, was married to three different men, and there were four additional failed marriages in her rear-view mirror. If there was anyone for whom the wedding bells sounded like the alarm clock, it was Gladys. Or, maybe they sounded like funeral bells. Because less than a month later, Alvin actually did it.... The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy. On the evening of May 10, 1988, a passing driver on Howard Street in Brockton, MA, stopped to investigate something unusual on the side of the road. When the driver got closer to what they thought was a bag, they realized it was actually the body of twenty-four-year-old Anthony LoConte, bleeding badly from injuries to his face and head.Initially, investigators believed LoConte was the victim of a hit-and-run accident; however, when the coroner examined the body, he discovered a bullet hole in the back of LoConte's head, indicating that he'd been murdered. It took twelve years for investigators to track down LoConte's killer, but in the winter of 2000, California Highway Patrol arrested Robert Morganti on drug charges and a quick background check connected them to a 1988 warrant for Morganti for the murder of Anthony LoConte. Robert Morganti was extradited back to Massachusetts, where he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for LoConte's murder. However, due to a controversial 2024 law concerning life sentences for young offenders, Robert Morganti could be granted parole in the near future.Consider signing the petition by visiting https://www.change.org/p/help-uncle-tony-uphold-mandatory-life-sentences-in-massachusetts-bill-s942 .Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBoston Globe. 1988.
