The Methodist Church has split and one side is growing fast. In this episode, Pastor Jeff and Tiffany Cocker unpack the theological roots of Methodism, why nearly 5,000 churches have joined the Global Methodist movement (a fairly new denomination), and what makes this tradition so distinct in today's world. They explore the historical foundations of Methodism, the influence of John and Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, and how the movement developed across England and the American colonies. Here's What We Discussed:00:33 – The Roots of MethodismHow the term “Methodist” began as a slur, and how the Wesley brothers and George Whitefield formed a movement focused on prayer, discipline, and Scriptural devotion.03:04 – John Wesley in AmericaJohn Wesley's short-lived ministry in colonial Georgia and how his personal struggles helped shape the future of Methodism.05:58 – Charles Wesley's HymnsCharles Wesley's theological influence through music, and why his hymns remain central to Methodist worship today.10:06 – George Whitefield's Evangelistic ReachA look at Whitefield's powerful preaching ministry, which reached an estimated 80% of colonial America, and his foundational role in the Methodist revival.13:05 – United vs. Global Methodist: The Modern SplitKey reasons behind the recent division, including differing views on biblical authority and Scriptural application.17:11 – A Typical Methodist Worship ServiceWhat to expect on a Sunday in a Methodist church: a blend of liturgy, creeds, music (both hymns and contemporary), and Scripture-based preaching.20:10 – Church Leadership & Governance An overview of the Methodist church's conference-based structure, role of bishops, and lay participation in decision-making.22:05 – Wesleyan Theology & Sanctification What “Christian perfection” really means in Methodist theology, and why the emphasis on sanctification and personal salvation sets this tradition apart.Key Quote:“One of the things that sets Wesleyan theology apart is John Wesley's view on what came to be known as Christian perfection, or entire sanctification. Wesley didn't teach that Christians become sinless in this life, but that we can, through God's grace, grow into full maturity in Christ. That means being wholly devoted to God and to loving others. The deeper you go into the sanctification process, the less you're going to sin.” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! If you enjoyed this episode, leave us a review. Send us a textGuess What? It's officially grey! We are in it. Oh my! It's Fifty shades of May over here on the Besties and the Books podcast. Welcome back to our spring mini episode series all about the extremely popular yet widely discredited book series: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. We're officially into book two and things are not exactly going as planned…If you've been following along and watched our “Dark Romance Enters the Chat” episode then you know, we trace romance novels wayyy back to their origin so we can discuss what societal conditions helped to produce this canon of works mostly written by women, for women, with women's stories, pleasure, and lived experiences at the center. We examine what influence romance books have had on literature and the publishing world as a whole, and then specifically discuss what impact Fifty Shades had on the genre! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley and Liz have never read it before. So this is all new information to us.We think that whether you find these books problematic or not, credit must be given where credit is due. The fact that these books have been stigmatized, criticized, and repeatedly knocked down is indicative (we think) of a larger societal problem: misogyny. Because as a society, it seems we just can't stand it when women are successful… or when they enjoy something. Whether it's objectively “good” or “profitable” or not. Episode 2 covers book 2: Fifty Shades Darker by E. L. James. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star and spice ratings. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (with a special classical surprise!), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, red flags, problematic elements, and end with a fun piece of Fifty Shades trivia.Don't be shy, subscribe! This week we try a new AA game from former Ubisoft developers called Clair Obscur Expedition 33. It's inspired by Belle Époque France and JRPG's. This is the best game we've played this year. From the art style, to the music to the complex turn-based combat, this game has it all to make for a great game. The storytelling is incredible and the world they built is stunning. You have to see it to believe it. It will be hard to beat this game this year!We also review Split Fiction, the follow up to the 2021 Game of the Year: It Takes Two. In Split Fiction, you play either Mio or Zoe. Both are writers, one of science fiction and the other fantasy who end up in a simulation of their own stories. They have to work together to escape. It has great gameplay, gorgeous graphics and is a fun ride start to finish.Brett also gets his hands on the tech test for the extraction shooter Arc Raiders from Embark Studios. Embark is known for the game Brett is obsessed with called The Finals and this is their take on an extraction shooter genre. This game is hard but full of style. The graphics are incredible, the performance is outstanding and the world is very immersive with great sound design. We can't wait for this one to release later this year.Lastly, we talk about Borderlands 4 and our hype from the State of Play. It is going more open world than before and we can't wait to see what's around the corner. It looks great! We also have some not so fun news from Xbox where they have announced price increases for their consoles and video games later this year. Will this make it harder to sell new games? Or will people gravitate away from AAA and towards the AA space?Show Notes:1:09 - Housekeeping2:45 - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review40:05 - Split Fiction Review57:48 - Arc Raiders: Proving What Extraction Shooters Can Be1:31:57 - Borderlands 4: Do They Still Have What it Takes?1:47:18 - Microsoft Xbox Price Increases2:09:30 - Upcoming Video Game Releases Become a part of the conversation! Tim and Rob return to break down all the subtle tension and slow-burning gameplay of Survivor Season 48, Episode 10: “My Enemies Are Plottin'” The game isn't imploding—yet—but the fuse is definitely lit. In This Episode: The Calm Before the Chaos: We're still waiting for the beach to catch fire—but that doesn't mean the game isn't simmering. The castaways are playing a methodical, chess-like game, and while it's a dream for strategy lovers, it's got us wondering: when will the real scrambling begin? A Fallen Star: One of the season's most entertaining players was voted out this week—and we're still recovering. Her exit leaves a Star-shaped hole in the season, and we reflect on what could have been if certain moves were made. Subtle Domination: Why are players being so cautious? We dig into the current vibe of the season—where boldness is rare, and quiet control reigns. It's a fascinating study in restraint, and we're asking: is subtle domination actually the most effective path in today's Survivor, even if it doesn't always make for great TV? Waffles, Rhymes & Watch Parties: Yes, there was a fried chicken and waffles rap, and yes, we're still thinking about it. Plus, we share stories from recent Brice and Wen Presents events and reflect on how Survivor continues to bring people together beyond the game. Trust vs. Paranoia: As we head into the final stretch, the question becomes: do you play with trust, or with fear? We break down the psychological tightrope the remaining players are walking—and why it might be smarter to wait, even if it's not flashiest. Dynamic Duos: Kamilla and Kyle continue to thrive under the radar, and we're loving every second of it. How long can a secret duo keep flying low before the target catches up? Plus: Predictions for the endgame Self-image, timing, and what makes someone finally pull the trigger Mail A Vote — Got a hot take or burning question? Their research found that this long-standing practice might not be benefiting piglets on day one as much as producers previously thought. Discussing the research are Mikayla Spinler, a graduate research assistant at Kansas State University, and Ashley Hartman, a research coordinator at Pillen Family Farms and DNA Genetics. The two discuss how the research was chosen, conducted and next steps on today's episode.

The Cincinnati Reds, currently 17-15 and second in the NL Central, kick off a three-game home series against the Washington Nationals on May 2, 2025, at Great American Ball Park. Game times are Friday at 6:10 PM, Saturday at 6:40 PM, and Sunday at 4:10 PM. The Reds are riding a five-game win streak, bolstered by the return of key players like Matt McLain and Austin Hays from the injured list. Hunter Greene, known for his blazing fastball, is slated to start Friday against Mitchell Parker, setting up an exciting pitching duel. Under new manager Terry Francona, the Reds aim to leverage their young talent, including Elly De La Cruz, to maintain momentum. The Nationals, struggling offensively, present an opportunity for Cincinnati to solidify their playoff push. After this series, the Reds face the Atlanta Braves on the road, making these home games critical. Fans can expect a vibrant atmosphere with the iconic steamboat smokestacks lighting up for home runs. Tickets start at $8.72 on Ticketmaster, and games will air on FanDuel Sports Network. This series is a chance for the Reds to showcase their potential. Austin Mock is a data-driven sports analyst for The Athletic, renowned for his advanced statistical models and simulations that predict outcomes and rate performances across the NFL, college football, MLB, and other sports. A former college baseball player, Mock's passion for sports statistics began in childhood, evolving into sophisticated projection models using granular data like play-by-play or plate appearance metrics. His work, which started as a hobby in 1999, now informs betting markets and team performance evaluations, offering insights into playoff probabilities and championship odds. Mock's models, refined through years of tweaks and coding in Python, provide transparent, detailed projections, making his content accessible to both bettors and casual fans. Beyond The Athletic, his analyses appear in The New York Times and Yahoo Sports. While another Austin Mock, a long snapper at Liberty University, exists, the analyst's focus is on data, not playing. His recent work includes NFL Draft projections and NCAA Tournament betting picks, showcasing his versatility. Mock's innovative approach, blending storytelling with analytics, has made him a trusted voice in sports journalism, though he avoids clichés, aiming to redefine how sports data is presented.

Send us a textGuess What? It's gonna be grey…It is grey! It's Fifty shades of May over here on the Besties and the Books podcast. Welcome to our spring mini episode series all about the extremely popular yet widely discredited book series: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. If you've been following along and watched our “Dark Romance Enters the Chat” episode then you know, we trace romance novels wayyy back to their origin so we can discuss what societal conditions helped to produce this canon of works mostly written by women, for women, with women's stories, pleasure, and lived experiences at the center. Episode 1 covers book 1: Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star and spice ratings. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (with a special classical surprise!), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, red flags, problematic elements, and end with a fun piece of Fifty Shades trivia.Join our Virtual Book Club & Buddy Read on Fable! | https://fable.co/club/50-shades-of-grey-pod-read-with-bestiesandthebookclub-487898954653Don't be shy, subscribe!
