Whether you call them Scotch Ales or Wee Heavies, who can resist the charms of one of Scotland's best exports. Brian Kimmel, a veteran of several hikes across the Scottish Highlands, joins us for an audio tour of Caledonia. We start in the south at the venerable Traquair House and work our way northward to Orkney Islands for a wee nip of the potent Skull Splitter, before finishing closer to home with Zaftig's complex barrel aged Wee Heavy.
I grew up in Scotland, graduating from Edinburgh University with a degree in genetics. Back then, genetics was all about statistics and probability. So, I became a statistician until I took up the more chancy career of writing children's books. Exploring the Insect World was published nearly 50 years ago. I then switched to time-slip fantasies and historical fiction. I've written nature-activity books, biographies, and more books about insects, which I now look on as my true calling. I married an entomologist. When you share your home, and sometimes your refrigerator, with insects you realize they need an advocate in our world! Margaret J. We'll also get an update on the second wave of COVID in the Faroe Islands and hear audio from a great Olavsoka party... from back in the days when you could have a great Olavsoka party and not infect a bunch of people with a deadly virus. If you want to hear more of the Bruck podcast, here's their RSS feed. In the podcast, Tom references a story about an Orkney brew called Skull Splitter. If you want to listen the the whole podcast he did about his quest, you can find it here.

Differentiation can be a contentious topic. Most educators want to reach all of their students, but the realities of how they can serve the breadth of needs in a classroom can lead to frustration. We consider the state of the national conversation by looking at a paper from Warwick (Contested Knowledge A Critical review of the Concept of Differentiation in Teaching and Learning). It argues that theoretical perspectives, policies, frameworks and the implementation of ideas relating to the technique have become conflated, because of the contested nature of the term. Later we return to math education by looking at a study using fMRI data to observe brain activity while solving math problems using different techniques (When math operations have visuospatial meanings versus purely symbolic definitions: Which solving stages and brain regions are affected?) Finally, we roll out the new Peer Review segment, in which we discuss your comments and feedback on previous episodes. We drink Skull Splitter, a strong ale from The Orkney Brewery in the United Kingdom.
For the 11th episode of Beats, Beards & Brews, the gang (aka Eric) goes full Viking with reviews of Grimfrost's Resin & Hops and Jarl's Thistle beard oils -- and essentially deliver a full company overview (bone combs!), Evan and Dan discover a passion for Viking-themed death metal while reviewing Amon Amarth's latest Jomsviking, and everyone enjoys the malty goodness of Skull Splitter from Orkney Brewery.
This edition of the Brewelist podcast, we explore the fantastic and mythical Jotun, from Thunder Lotus Games. The game features a kick-ass Viking woman who takes down powerful creatures and we knew we need something equally as strong to pair with it. In comes the Skull Splitter Ale from Orkney Brewery. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as we enjoyed recording it for you all. If you're interested in picking up the game, visit the Steam link HERE.
