Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 367 The blood is the life!Today I would like to start out by comparing Bram Stoker's Dracula's castle to Edgar Allan Poe's decaying House of Usher. Both Castle Dracula and the House of Usher are iconic Gothic settings that share several key characteristics, emphasizing decay, isolation, and a sense of foreboding. However, they also have distinct features that set them apart.Castle Dracula is described as a vast, ruined structure with broken battlements and tall black windows. Its exterior shows signs of decay, with carvings worn by time and weather. The castle's imposing architecture and remote location on a great rock contribute to its air of impenetrability and isolation. In contrast, the House of Usher is portrayed as a mansion rather than a castle, but it shares the theme of decay. The exterior of the House of Usher is covered in "minute fungi" and a "fine tangled web-work," creating a more organic form of deterioration. Both structures evoke a sense of ancient history and faded grandeur. Castle Dracula is associated with Romanian aristocracy and contains valuable artifacts from centuries past. The House of Usher, while not explicitly tied to nobility, also carries an aura of long-standing family history.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.
This week we'll be returning to Castle Dracula to get some much needed exorcise. There'll be a bit of necking, some heavy petting, and a British bake off so sensual that it may cause a few soggy bottoms. Yes, it's Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. Joining me to see if the baker KNEADS any help, is world class profiterole chef Ashley Blaker. Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/smershpod. Hosted on Acast. One of the sensations of its day was a trial in Douglas of George Barker James Cooper, the scion of a Manchester business family, whose relationship with Edith Annie Cooper, his wife, was volatile, going from apparent harmony to drunken violence in an instant. In one such episode, Edith was killed in their room at the Regent Hotel in Douglas. The Cooper Trial took place from 14th to 22nd November 1892, and we hear what came out in court. It's the penultimate episode of our translation into Manx of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Professor Van Helsing has found a refuge between rocks for Mina Harker and himself amidst the driving snow and approaching wolves. As they survey the area when blinding snow allows, they see the Szganee riding hard for Castle Dracula with the box containing Count Dracula on their wagon. As y kiaull ain -TUDUR MORGAN - Mil harddach wytJOY & ANDREW DUNLOP - A Mhairead ogSKOLVAN - Bal plinn de VertigeBARRULE & GREG JOUGHIN - In search of ManannanBRENDA WOOTTON & RICHARD GENDALL - A wennol wynCOOLFIN - The mouseskin shoes/Dancing in AllihiesLINDA GRIFFITHS & BRIGYN - Fy nghan i tiROBERT WILSON - Westering homeZONK - Bulat bulat
During the Halloween season, we had the pleasure of merging our passion for horror and East Anglian tales. This opportunity arose when Dr. Mark Fryers, a film history expert and a friend of our podcast, reached out to us. He shared his ongoing research involving Norwich, Count Dracula, and Universal Studios, which immediately piqued our interest for a podcast feature. In the upcoming interview, Mark will shed light on Charles D. Hall, a Norwich native born in 1888, coinciding with the year of Jack the Ripper. Hall honed his architectural skills in Norwich, which later propelled him to Hollywood fame after a period working with Fred Karno's music hall company. There, he encountered icons like Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. Transitioning from designing sets for Karno, Hall eventually collaborated with Hollywood horror legends such as Tod Browning and James Whale. His artistic vision crafted the ambiance of legendary locales like Castle Frankenstein and Castle Dracula, and films like The Invisible Man and The Black Cat, featuring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Dr. Mark Fryers, who now lectures at the Open University, is an extensively published scholar with a focus on maritime and gothic horror representations. His book, "Celluloid Tales: Norfolk Film History," is currently available and comes highly recommended, and can be found here
Politics during the years following the death of Godred Crovan in 1097 were only too literally cut-throat, as various rivals fought savagely for the throne of the Kingdom of Man and the Isles. We follow the Chronicles of the Kings of Man and the Isles for 90 years from the death of Godred Crovan to the death of Godred Olafson on 10th November 1187.Our Manx translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula has only two episodes to run after this one. Professor Van Helsing has been undertaking the gruesome work of making the Undead die, as he deals with three beautiful Vampires in Castle Dracula, as well as sealing the castle off from the use of the Undead Count Dracula. When his work is finished he will rejoin Mina Harker, protected in a Holy circle - which, whilst it protects her, she can't leave either. As y kiaull ain -THE IRISH WEAVERS - Ag teacht abhailePLETHYN - Hen fenyw fach CydweliRON JAPPY - A day to rememberTHEO LE MAGUET - Je vais me marierMOOT - Tra va mee aegKERENSA - Lowenna waltzTOMAS MAC EOIN, TOMAS MAC CON IOMAIRE & MAIRTIN MacDONNCHADH - An cailin ailinnCOR MERCHED EDEYRNION - Dim ond meirch y morJOY DUNLOP - Cadal cuain

HOLY COW! I've got not one but two comics legends hanging out with me today on the podcast, Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones. I've been a fan of Matt's Grendel work for decades, geez that's a long time, and Kelley is the definitive Batman artist in my mind. They are crowdfunding the second volume of their new series Dracula: The Brides, redefining the classic mythology both narratively and visually in a way I've never seen before. This is truly a dream come true for me as a comics fan and one of the most unique interview experiences I've ever had, they are such pros that I was just pretty much along for the bloody ride. I was a backer for Volume One: The Impaler and I've got my pledge in already for Volume Two: The Brides. Crowdfunding is the only way you can get these in hardcover so don't miss out, and if you don't trust me.... "Wow-in a good way, and I'm a Dracula snob so that's saying something. This is a wild ride that sails beyond the Borgo Pass--and I believe this may well be the book Kelley Jones was born to draw. Here is all the mood and horror I would expect from him, but also a level of crazy (good crazy) that I've never seen from him before. --- Mike Mignola From the campaign The first volume of Wagner and Jones's DRACULA saga was a runaway hit, breaking the Top 20 in Kickstarter's all-time most successful graphic novel campaigns. DRACULA: BOOK II—THE BRIDES presents 120 pages of sexy and sinister story and art, almost 30 pages longer than BOOK I. Wagner and Jones are once again joined for this creepy foray into the shadows of Castle Dracula by the stellar talents of José Villarrubia on colors and lettering by Rob Leigh. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. Van Helsing, chosen by Chris, Join Andrew, Bruce and Chris for the 7th episode of Season 10 of the Ten Point Podcast, coming to you live from Castle Dracula!
We finish the short story by P M C Kermode about John the Priest of Corna dale, set against events of the year 1210. It was intended as one of a series of unconnected short stories, perhaps more as a vehicle to give lots of historic colour. However, he was persuaded to continue to follow the life of his main character in subsequent episodes.Professor Van Helsing is preparing a memorandum to Dr John Seward to explain all that is happening as he and Mina Harker draw nearer to Castle Dracula. The Professor is concerned about changes in Mina, who has been a victim of Count Dracula. P M C Kermode sets his story about John the Priest of Corna dale against the historic events of 1210, which saw war galleys sent to the Island by King John of England, when unfortunately the strong Manx king Reginald (Ragnvaldr) was absent with his forces in the western isles of Scotland. In our Manx translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, we first join Mina Harker and Professor Van Helsing on the road towards the Borgo Pass and beyond to Castle Dracula. Though it's becoming more difficult to put Mina under hypnosis, Count Dracula is still travelling by river towards his home. We've followed Juan the Priest of Corna Dale into Thorkell's cabin on the slopes of Barrule, where he finds Thorkell's wife with her children and a sickly baby. The mother thinks it won't survive for long, but Juan has other ideas. A story written by P M C Kermode, with lots of historic detail. In our Manx translation of Dracula by Bram Stoker, we hear from Jonathan Harker how his and Lord Godalming's journey is going by boat; from Dr John Seward about progress made by himself and Quincey Morris on horseback; and from Mina Harker about her journey with Professor Van Helsing towards Castle Dracula after buying a carriage and horses. As y kiaull ain -AVEL DRO - Les endivesDELIA MURPHY & RICHARD HAYWARD - What will you do, love?AVEL DRO - TricotBRIAN MAC STOYLL - Berree DhoneNEVER MIND THE BOCS - Cainc yr aradwrAVEL DRO - Kost er hoetCATRIONA WATT - Nan tigeadh tu idirTHE OGGYMEN - My young man's a CornishmanAVEL DRO - Ridee six temps
In the first edition of Sophia Morrison's magazine, 'Mannin', in May 1913, P M C Kermode contributed what was intended to be the first of a series of short stories to give an impression of day to day life in the Island's history. However, it became the story about John the Priest and starts 'In Corna Dale'.In our Manx translation of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', Professor Van Helsing explains why he is intending to go with Mina Harker to Castle Dracula itself, despite the dangers. Corvin Castle is one of the biggest and most impressive castles in Europe. It is located in the city of Hunedoara on the Hungarian-Romanian border. Even though Corvin Castle looks like it's coming straight from a fairy tale book, its history is quite dark. Its history tells of a place of torture and death. A torture chamber can be found in the dungeon and apart from some very interesting torture devices, it houses a bear pit as well. Prisoners who were sentenced to death were thrown in this pit and eaten alive by the hungry bears below.Tourists are told that Vlad Tepes, known as Vlad the Impaler or the real-life inspiration for Dracula, was held prisoner for 7 years at Corvin Castle. Because of this story, the Castle was the source of inspiration for Castle Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 horror novel “Dracula”.In this episode of the True Hauntings podcast we go to Romania where we will explore the legends and ghost stories of Corvin Castle and find out whether this is the Castle where Dracula's spirit continues to terrorise people. As always -We hope you enjoy this episode - please leave a review and jump on over to our True Hauntings Fans Facebook page and tell us.LOVE OUR WORK?Consider supporting our work by buying us a "cup of coffee" https://www.buymeacoffee.com/anneandrenataORbecome a Grand Poobah Patreon supporter, and join our inner circle of craziness!https://www.patreon.com/anneandrenataJoin us on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/TrueHauntingsPodcastP.S. It's Christmas Day 1909, but American scholar, W Y Evans Wentz, is still out visiting people in Glen Maye and Peel to hear stories which he retold in 'The Fairy-Faith in the Celtic Countries', which he published in 1911.In our Manx translation of Dracula by Bram Stoker, Mina Harker has understood something of the character of Count Dracula, from some of the things the Count had told her husband, Jonathan, when he was visiting the Count in Castle Dracula - seemingly unimportant at the time, but actually an unguarded insight into the way he thinks and operates. As y kiaull ain -COWBOIS RHOS BOTWNNOG - Myn a'r ty am droEILIDH NIC CARMAIG - Duan na MuildheartaichXAREU FOLK - Muinera d'AntonAINE DURKIN - Tabhair dom do lamhJACK COLLINGS - The skippers of St IvesSTAA - Polka DrineLLEUWEN STEFFAN - Myn MairKENNETH McKELLAR - Isle of MullTRIO HAMON-MARTIN-EBREL & ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE DE BRETAGNE - Sant Fonik plinn
We rejoin W Y Evans Wentz in Ballasalla where he hears more stories about what he calls 'fairies', though Sophia Morrison points out that the Manx people had lots of names for them, but that 'fairies' was not used. Episode Synopsis: Mina continues to sleep solidly during the daylight hours. Van Helsing commits himself to remain awake at night while Mina is awake, but finds himself dozing during the day while driving the carriage, and when he awakes, is overjoyed to see the Castle Dracula looming in the distance. As they settle down for the night, Van Helsing creates a circle surrounding Mina, using the holy Eucharist broken into a fine dust. Mina admits that she is unable to leave the circle, which Van Helsing is pleased to hear, as it means she can not leave in the night. When Van Helsing gets up to feed the fire, Mina stops him, and he discovers that the swirling snow has materialized into the three Vampire Women from Jonathan's diary. They beckon to Mina, but are unable to enter the circle. In the morning, Van Helsing discovers that the horses, who had been outside the circle, are dead. He is unable to awaken Mina to hypnotize her. While resting the horses, Seward and Quincey catch sight of the Szgany hurrying along with their wagonload as though being chased. They are aware of the presence of wolves in the woods around them. Van Helsing leaves Mina sleeping in the holy circle, and attends to the gristly business of sanctifying the Count's castle against him. He is momentarily delayed by the realization that Mina might be in danger from wolves, but presses on with his work. He starts by removing the great front doors, so no spell might trap him inside the castle. He quickly finds the chapel and the three brides who sleep in their coffins. He falters in his task if dispatching them, as he begins to fall under a trance, but is awakened by the sound of Mina's voice calling from afar. He drives his stake through each of the brides and cuts off their heads, upon which act their bodies crumble to dust. Van Helsing sanctifies the Count's grave and meets Mina who awakens and tells him that Jonathan is coming in their direction and the end is nigh. Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 27, narrated by Isaac BirchallVan Helsing writes a memorandum to Dr Seward, informing him that he and Mina have reached the Borgo Pass. They continue their way up the pass until they come upon Castle Dracula. Just outside, in their camp, Van Helsing and Mina are attacked by the three female Vampires that attack Johnathan so long ago. They thankfully are protected by a Magic circle that Van Helsing drew around them. The following day, Van Helsing leaves Mina sleeping in the Magic circle as he makes his way to the castle. Once inside, using Johnathan's Diary as his reference, Van Helsing heads down to the tomb where he checks all of the coffins so that he can sanctify them, and then destroy the three sleeping vampire women. As he leaves, he seals the door with a sacred wafer, denying the count access, should they fail.Mina and Van Helsing then make their way back to the road making a camp inside of a cave where they have a good vantage point to see anyone approach. Having scaled the castle exterior to the Count's bedroom once again, and having traveled the passage to the chapel, Jonathan Harker discovers the Count lying in his earthen box. To Jonathan's horror, the Count's youth has been half restored, and he lies gorged with blood that trickles down his chin. Jonathan is unable to find the front door key on the Count's body and tries to stab the Count with a nearby shovel. However, a twitch reaction from the Count startles Jonathan, and the shovel only grazes the Count's forehead, leaving a deep gash. Jonathan returns to the Count's bedroom, but when he hears the Szgany entering the chapel by some other means, the door the the passageway blows shut, trapping Jonathan in the Count's bedroom. Fearing the promised return of the spectral sisters, Jonathan writes a final goodbye message to Mina before attempting his most perilous climb yet- down the treacherous precipice to escape the Castle Dracula. Dracula by Bram Stoker, chapter 26, narrated by Isaac BirchallSeward writes as they head to Galatz. He is concerned that Mina revealed less and less in her hypnotised state; she reveals that she still hears the lapping of water, letting the men know that the count is still near the boats. The men hope to reach him before the coffin is unloaded, but arrive too late, finding out that the box was unloaded by a businessman named Hildesheim, who in turn gave it to a man named Skinsky, who they find out has been murdered…Mina is determined to find out where the count has Gone, and sets out a plan to map out every possible route he could have taken and to thus determine where he is. After presenting this info to the men, Van Helsing proclaims her a genius, and they make a plan to tackle him from all routes; Seward and Morris by horse; Holmwood and Harker by steam boat; Mina and Van Helsing heading in front to cut him off at the Castle.During Holmwood and Harker's journey, they hear of a large boat with double the normal crew headed up stream and determine that this must be the count's vessel. Seward and Morris follow on horse. Mina notes that she and Van Helsing have arrived in Veresti where they get a carriage and horses to get to Castle Dracula. She thinks back to Johnathan as she sees the country side that he saw many months before, and notes how nice it would have been to travel here with him if none of this horror had occurred to them.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todayVPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389Get data brokers to stop selling your information with:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 2, narrated by Isaac BirchallJonathan Harker is standing outside of Castle Dracula, asking himself what on Earth he has gotten himself into. After waiting for several minutes in the cold and wind, the door opens and a tall, old, grey-haired man, completely clad in black greets him. Dracula extends a hand to Harker and welcomes him to his home; Dracula's hand is stone cold and as strong as iron, startling Jonathan slightly. Harker enters the castle, and Dracula takes him to his chambers where a delicious dinner is prepared for him. After dinner, the two talk, and Harker is taken back by the Count's appearance; pointed ears, very pain skin, and very sharp teeth. The following day, Harker receives a letter from Dracula excusing himself, saying he has some work to do. Finding himself alone, Harker has some breakfast, and finding no servants in the castle, explores the adjacent rooms. The room is lavishly dressed, with great tapestries, and beautiful furniture, and a library filled with tonnes of English books. In the evening, Dracula joins Jonathan again to converse. The men discuss the superstitions of the area as Harker is eager to learn about the strange blue flames that he saw on the previous night. They then discuss the estate that Dracula has purchased in London. Again, Dracula converses late into the night, leaving just before daybreak, excusing himself for keeping Harker up so late. The following day, Dracula interrupts Jonathan shaving. Jonathan jumps out of his skin as he could not see Dracula in the mirror behind him, cutting himself slightly. Dracula lunges towards Harker's throat at the sight of blood, only restraining himself after touching the beaded cross necklace that the old lady gave Jonathan. Dracula then warns Harker about the dangers of a cut in this country and then promptly throws the mirror out of the window… Being then left alone, Harker eats breakfast, thinking that he has not seen the count eat or drink. Once again Harker tries to explore the castle, but he finds almost every door locked, realising that he has been made prisoner in the count's Castle.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todayVPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389Get data brokers to stop selling your information with:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389Thank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadsSupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 1, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe Main character Jonathan Harker is making his way to Castle Dracula. His journey starts in Budapest, and he enjoys many of the cultural delicacies, finding his basic German enough to get him understood. In the Morning he gets on the train and marvels at the countryside, so different from the British, flying by him. He is equally taken away by the dress of the local Slovaks.Eventually he arrives in Bistritz near the Borgo Pass, where the Count had instructed him to stay before making the final leg of the journey. On arrival the host greets him at the door, and she calls for her husband to get a letter for Jonathan. The letter is from Dracula, welcoming Jonathan to Transylvania, and tells him that he should get the coach at 3 on the following day. When Jonathan wakes, he finds that the owners of the inn are in a very strange state, and they refuse to answer any questions that he has about the count, and instead draw crossing on their chests with their fingers. Just as he is about to leave, the inn keeper implores Jonathan not to leave, to at least wait a few days. Jonathan says that he has to go, and the woman finally give in, allowing him to leave only after forcing he cross necklace on him. Getting into the coach he notices the coachman and the innkeeper talking evidentially about him, overhearing many repeated words in foreign languages translating to devil, hell, demon, vampire, etc. Just as they set off, he notices that everyone in the inn crosses themselves and give Jonathan a look of fear, and sorrow. They make their way through the beautiful forests of “the Mittle land” with blossoming fruit trees all around. Jonathan remarks their pace and is staggered at the speed that the coach is moving, the coachman is surely in a hurry. Night descends upon them the other passengers become excited and seem to urge the coachman to go faster and faster, afraid of what could happen at night. Eventually they make their way to an opening where Harker was supposed to meet the Count's conveyance, but no one is around to collect him. Suddenly out of nowhere, a caleche pulls up besides the coach, a tall man wearing a hat which covers his face, the only thing visible were 2 eyes that seemed to be red in the light. After getting into the caleche they set off at an equally great pace. Slowly Jonathan seems to think that they are going in circles, and eventually decides to test it, and discovers that they are looping themselves over and over again. A pack of wolfs howl in the distance, and slow they seem to be getting closer and closer. After midnight over and over again, a small blue flame seems to appear off of the side of the road, and the coachman descends the caleche to crouch near it and seeming collect something. On the last time, the coachman steps off a little further from the caleche than before, but as he is gone the pack of wolves get closer and closer until he is surrounded by them. Finally, the coachman comes back, and seems to make the wolfs move away with but a wave of his hand, as if they were but a fly buzzing in front of the caleche. They set off again and Harker falls asleep. When he wakes, he is pulling up to the most majestic castle, with a giant wooden door welcoming him to the Count.Get SurfShark and protSupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Join Annie and Jenny on a trip to the Aberdeenshire Coast, revisiting Old and New Slains Castles. We discover how Bram Stoker took extensive inspiration from Cruden Bay in his writing of his books: Watter's Mou, Mystery of the Sea and Dracula. We revisit the Hays of Errol as their power in the North East of Scotland surges and wanes. Together, we unpick why 19th Century vampires were wearing kilts in the public imagination, and demand for a return to this trend. Welcome to Novel Context, bi-weekly podcast that unpacks influential books to understand the story the author was really telling, how the culture and politics of that time influenced it, and how that story still shapes us today. On this episode, we begin our season long exploration of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. We'll be walking through Jonathan Harker's haunted trip to Transylvania, and then unpack the origins of Castle Dracula, The Count's the often ignored power over dreams and reality, and we'll unmask the historical figure Dracula was really based on.
We're here to fight Dracula!
We've finally arrived at Castle Dracula for the ultimate discussion of Seasons 1 & 2 of Netflix's CASTLEVANIA as our concluding conversation on #scaretoons. The series has proven to be quite subversive, particularly when considering the game franchise upon which it is based (games which get some special attention in a bonus patron segment). What the series and its approach to the iconic character of Dracula prompts is a heartfelt conversation about the needs and limitations of empathy and the difficult burden of challenging our own perceptions of people and of a changed heart and mind. This is a conversation we greatly enjoyed having and deeply hope you enjoy hearing.5:39 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: Castlevania Video Games RANKED9:49 - CASTLEVANIA, Seasons 1 & 2See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
