5. Lunar Orbit Insertion and the Disappointment of the Moon's Surface. Bob Zimmerman discusses how on Christmas Eve, Apollo 8 approached the moon. The critical moment was Lunar Orbit Injection (LOI), requiring the firing of the Service Propulsion System (SPS) engine. This burn had to occur while the craft was behind the moon, resulting in a dramatic Loss of Signal (LOS) for Earth. Susan Borman particularly dreaded this moment because the SPS engine, which had no redundancy, was their only way into and out of lunar orbit. NASA believed firing the engine would clear any potentially problematic bubbles in the fuel lines, adding another risk. Once in orbit, the astronauts were visually disappointed, with Frank Borman describing the moon's surface as looking like a "skull" or a lifeless sandbox. Their direct observation settled the debate among scientists, confirming that the moon's craters were the result of impacts, not volcanic activity. 1962

I think I am more interested in seeing how Zoran Mamdani goes than any other Democrat that I can remember in a very, very, very long time, because I genuinely am not sure if this is gonna go brilliantly for him. And he's the next big thing, or he's the next big disappointment, because there is no way, is there? Like, no way at all he's gonna be able to do everything that he's promised. I mean, he might be able to do a rent freeze in New York City. Sure, that's an easy thing to do. That's a stroke of a pen. Off you go. But it might backfire. Like it might lead to fewer housing units being added, which ultimately makes the problem worse. He can pick something else to do. He could do free childcare, hugely expensive. He could add a 2% tax on incomes over $1 million, but he may find those incomes start disappearing from his city. Either way, he's gonna have to pick some of his pet projects and go with just a few of them, because doing absolutely everything is just not gonna happen. And that's gonna lead to disappointment surely for the voters who truly believe he can do all these things. My gut though says that the disappointment will not be great, because if there's one thing we learned from Donald Trump, it's that breaking promises doesn't actually really matter that much if you represent something to voters. Donald Trump represented the anti-establishment, so people stuck with him even when he broke his promises. Mamdani represents the anti-Trump, so I think people will stick with him even if he breaks his promises. I actually suspect, by the way, that this is going to be very good for Donald Trump. I think he's going to love having Mamdani around because he will be able to use everything that Mamdani does to berate him and the Democrats. Every time a promise is broken, he's going to, because Mamdani is the opposite of him, right? So Mamdani just becomes the bad guy in all of his stories from here on and he pumps himself up. However this goes for Mamdani, I think we can all agree this is now turning into a must-see show. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ACC's ending its long-standing partnership with Water Safety New Zealand after this summer, saying it hasn't seen a measurable reduction in drowning injury claims. Water Safety New Zealand will lose about a million dollars a year in ACC funding. Acting CEO Gavin Walker says ACC's challenge is understandable, but they need the funding to help do life-saving work. Have you ever picked up a bottle, paid top dollar for it, got it home and MEH. Or you buy it, get in the truck and have instant regret. We talk all about that and get a couple of listener write ins. Hope this episode is enjoyable.Thewhiskeyshaman.comPatreon.com/the_whiskeyshamanBadmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==Whiskey buying remorse is a specific type of buyer's remorse, which is the feeling of regret, anxiety, or guilt that occurs after making a purchase. In the context of whiskey, this feeling is triggered by a variety of factors related to the characteristics of a bottle, the price, and the purchasing experience. Common reasons for whiskey buying remorseDidn't meet expectations: This is a major cause of regret for whiskey drinkers. You may have bought a bottle that had received glowing reviews, but once you try it, the flavor profile doesn't live up to the hype.Overpaying for a bottle: With the high demand for certain whiskies, prices can become inflated. Remorse often sets in when a drinker feels they paid a premium for a bottle that doesn't offer a quality-to-price ratio that they can justify.Buying on a whim: An impulse purchase can lead to regret, especially when you haven't had a chance to taste the whiskey beforehand. This is a riskier strategy than sticking to a tried-and-true favorite or a bottle you've previously sampled.Discovering it's not a good fit: Some whiskies, despite being well-regarded, may not suit your personal taste. You may find you simply don't enjoy the flavor profile, leaving you with a bottle you struggle to finish.Hoarding instead of drinking: Some collectors experience remorse when they realize they're accumulating bottles without enjoying them. The point of buying whiskey is to drink it, and if it becomes just another museum piece, the purchase can feel pointless. If you can, try a sample at a bar or with a friend before committing to a full bottle.Research thoroughly: Before making a purchase, especially a costly one, read a variety of reviews and opinions from different sources. Don't rely on just one person's assessment.Set a budget: Establish a spending limit and stick to it. This can prevent the regret that comes with overspending on an expensive bottle.Identify your triggers: Pay attention to what makes you make impulsive purchases, such as a flashy marketing campaign or an enticing sale. Recognize these triggers and avoid them.Ask for help: If you're unsure, ask knowledgeable staff at a liquor store for a recommendation based on your preferences. Working with an expert can help guide you toward a satisfying choice. In addition to not meeting expectations, overpaying, or buying on a whim, people experience whiskey buying remorse for other reasons related to taste, collector pressure, and disappointment with specific characteristics. Disappointment with the tasteUnpleasant or off-tasting flavor: Sometimes a whiskey has a genuinely bad or unpleasant taste that makes it difficult to drink. This can include flavors that taste "medicinal" or "funky".Too much oak influence: While age is often associated with quality, older whiskeys can sometimes have an overpowering "woody" or oak flavor that masks other notes.

Trump and Xi finally sat down for the first in-person meeting of this new administration, and I won't lie — there was a lot of hype going into this one. There were whispers about a grand bargain, even murmurs of a complete game-changer announcement. Maybe China would distance itself from Russia. Maybe there'd be some kind of century-defining move on Taiwan. Earlier this week, anything seemed possible. What we got was something a lot less dramatic: a truce. Not a full-blown trade deal. A trade truce. And honestly, I was a little disappointed.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. So here's what went down. China made a few big concessions. They agreed to immediately buy 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans and promised to keep it going at 25 million tons per year for three years. They also agreed to suspend their new rare earth export controls for a year and curb fentanyl precursor production — a big issue in the U.S. Beyond that, China made a surprise move by signaling interest in American energy and even hinted at joining a natural gas pipeline project in Alaska. That last bit came totally out of nowhere. In return, the United States is lowering tariffs on Chinese goods by 10 percentage points, which still leaves them at a hefty 45 percent. We're also postponing an investigation into Chinese shipping practices, which would have imposed new port taxes. There's a delay on export restrictions for blacklisted Chinese firms for one year. Now, don't get too excited — Trump made clear that China won't be getting its hands on Nvidia's top-shelf Blackwell chips, though some older GPUs will still be allowed to be sold. There was talk about ending Russia's war in Ukraine, but nothing about China stopping its oil purchases from Russia. And most notably, no mention of Taiwan at all.Honestly, when I look at this, I think Trump and Xi were made for each other. Normally, trade deals take forever, get wrapped in ceremony, and then quietly fall apart when China decides not to follow through. U.S. leaders usually just shrug and move on, chalking it all up to classic maneuvers on their part. But Trump doesn't play that game. If he doesn't like a deal, he changes it. If China doesn't hold up their end, he goes right back at them. And I have to say, there's a certain clarity in that approach. It's not exactly stable, but it's a little more to-the-point.I'll admit, I got a little swept up in the pre-meeting hype. I thought maybe we'd see something big, something that could define this administration's approach to foreign policy. But now that I've had time to let it all sink in, here's what I'm left with: this matters. Maybe not as much as I hoped it would, but it still matters. Because the American economy — and by extension, our elections — are tied so closely to what happens with China. If this truce brings even a little stability, it could have ripple effects that shape 2025 and beyond.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:02:18 - US-China Deal00:09:39 - Interview with Gabe Fleisher00:31:10 - Update00:31:27 - Shutdown Progress00:33:59 - Jasmine Crockett00:37:02 - Elise Stefanik00:40:13 - Interview with Gabe Fleisher, con't01:08:29 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. What do you do when something you really want isn't happening? Most of us give up or wait for someone else to lead. But this week, I watched my 12-year-old daughter remind me what courage really looks like — when you lead from inspiration instead of waiting for permission. It's a story about creativity, collaboration, and how courage shows up in the smallest yet most powerful ways.

Episode Summary: This episode of the Rich Mind Podcast tackles one of the biggest hidden sources of unhappiness: our expectations. Randy and Greg explore the "happiness gap"—the space between our current reality and the future we expect—and how this gap dictates our level of satisfaction in life. They discuss the two primary forms of toxic expectations: those we place on others (often leading to disappointment) and the unrealistic, self-imposed expectations we place on ourselves (often leading to burnout and self-sabotage). Drawing on wisdom from Jim Rohn and Earl Nightingale, this conversation is a guide to letting go of rigid outcomes, practicing gratitude for the present, and cultivating a healthy sense of expectancy for a great future without being attached to the details. Key Takeaways: Your level of happiness is determined by the size of the gap between your expectations and your current reality. Placing rigid expectations on other people is a setup for disappointment, as you cannot control their actions. We often carry childhood disappointments (like Randy's Trans Am story) into our adult lives, creating a paradigm of expecting the worst. There is a crucial difference between having high standards and having unrealistic, self-sabotaging expectations of yourself. You can't force inspiration or progress; sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is give yourself grace and relax. A powerful framework for a happy life, from Earl Nightingale, is to combine daily gratitude for what you have with a positive expectancy for what's to come. A great journal prompt to uncover hidden frustrations is: "What expectation is driving my frustration right now?" Questions Answered in This Episode: How do our expectations directly affect our happiness? Why is placing expectations on other people a recipe for disappointment? How can you stop setting unrealistic expectations for yourself? What is the difference between healthy expectancy and toxic expectations? How can you give yourself grace without losing your drive to achieve? What did Earl Nightingale mean by "gratitude and expectancy"? How can journaling help you identify and manage your expectations? How do you find the balance between having ambitious goals and being happy in the present moment? Key People, Concepts, & Terms: People: Randy Wilson, Greg Junge, Jim Rohn, Earl Nightingale. We do this as moms all the time: we think it'll be better when. When the kids are older. When it's the weekend. When the semester is over. When Christmas finally comes. But the truth is, there's no such thing as “over there.” There's only here, this present moment, which is the culmination of all the little moments that led you here. In this episode, we're talking about the Arrival Fallacy, that sneaky lie that tells us peace and joy are waiting for us at the finish line, when really, the way you go through something is the way you'll arrive. If you've ever found yourself frustrated, overwhelmed, or disappointed by the holidays (again), I want to help you build a new foundation, one rooted in peace, presence, and hope. We'll talk about how Mary's Way of calm generosity, peaceful presence, and unwavering hope can change the way you walk through busy seasons, and how to start magnifying hope instead of stress in your home. Because just like Mary, we can learn to expect sorrow and still live in hope.Grab your earbuds and join me for: Mary's Way: Choosing Hope Over Disappointment. JOIN MAGNIFY 2025 HERE!

Rekindled HeartsLuke 24:13-35The Village Chapel - 10/26/2025Two disciples walk the seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus, trying to make sense of the unthinkable. Their hope had been nailed to a cross and buried in a tomb. Disappointment hung heavy in the air as the promise of the resurrected Jesus was nowhere to be seen—until a stranger joined them on the road. Step by step, He listened, questioned, and opened the Scriptures until their cold hearts began to glow with the hope of the resurrection. Join Pastor Tommy Bailey as we walk that road together. In Luke 24:13–35, we'll see how Jesus meets us in our confusion, rekindles our faith through His Word, and turns the ache of “we had hoped” into the joy of hearts set ablaze.Sermon Notes & Quotes: https://thevillagechapel.com/resources/luke-24-13-35/To find more resources like these, follow us:Website: https://thevillagechapel.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVTzDbaiXVUAm_mUBDCTJAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tvcnashville/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tvcnashvilleX: https://twitter.com/tvcnashvilleTo support the ongoing mission of The Village Chapel go to https://thevillagechapel.com/give/. Do you think Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger ever had a magic act where Pliny the Elder would climb into a big wooden box with whatever the Latin is for "PLINY THE ELDER'S DE-AGING DEVICE" written on it. Then Pliny the Younger would jump out of the box and say "behold, it is I, Pliny the Elder but younger. But you may call me simply Pliny." Then William Pitt, who had been watching from backstage, calls his dad on the phone and says "Pitt! Pitt the Elder! It's your son, Pitt the Younger. You know that new sound you're looking for? Well listen to this!" and then he holds the phone towards the stage, not understanding that telephones can't convey a magic act that ended twenty seconds ago. "Pitt the Disappointment, more like," says Pitt the Elder on the phone to no one. In this episode. Steve gets scanned. Log gets Zimmed. Joe gets secrets. Charmed I'm sure.

HOUR 4 - KJ and Lyons are talking Bruins, breaking down their roster and rough start to the season
Delight Your Marriage | Relationship Advice, Christianity, & Sexual Intimacy
It doesn't start with scandal. It often doesn't even start with feelings. It starts with a smile. A moment of connection. A conversation that feels easy—maybe easier than the ones you've been having at home. You walk away thinking, That was nothing. But somewhere deep down, you also know—it could become something. If that's where you find yourself today (or even if you've seen the warning signs in someone you love), please take a deep breath. You're not broken. You didn't marry the wrong person. You haven't done an irredeemable thing with no going back. You're human. And this conversation is meant to bring you hope, not shame. In my conversation with Gary Thomas today—pastor and bestselling author of Sacred Marriage—he shared that when a group of wives was asked "How many times do you think a married man has had extramarital feelings for someone?", they all responded with zero. When he asked the same question to a group of husbands, they all said somewhere from 4 to 6. What we are saying is that attraction and feelings for someone other than your spouse are not often talked about, but are pretty common- for both husbands and wives. And we believe that bringing this into the light will take some of the shame off of these feelings and also help people not to go down a road they think has no return. Gary Thomas on Attraction and Integrity Gary has been married for over 40 years, and he's seen a lot—as a pastor, counselor, and husband. He told me, “The reason we make a commitment is because we know there will always be another person who draws us for a moment. Commitment means we already know what to do with it—and what not to do with it.” We don't often talk about attraction outside of marriage unless it's already turned into an affair. But Gary's heart is to normalize awareness before it becomes destruction. In our talk, Gary referenced a romantic comedy movie where a married bus driver begins to become attracted to a girl on a bicycle. Finally, a friend of the bus driver gently confronts him and says: “There will always be a girl on the bicycle.” In other words, there will always be someone who catches your eye. The key isn't pretending that will never happen—it's learning how to respond when it does. Gary reminded me that having an attraction isn't the sin. Entertaining it is. The feelings themselves don't make you unfaithful—they make you human. But where you let those feelings go next? That's where faithfulness begins. The Subtle Steps Toward an Affair Gary shared that most affairs don't start with a dramatic choice—they start with small, quiet ones. Little compromises that feel “innocent.” He shared with a story of a woman who did end up having a physical affair. She recounted that it wasn't just one day to the next, but that there were actually several steps that happened before they were physically intimate. She shares that she could have turned back at any of these step, had she known before. She also shares the grief after it was all done at waking up to "just a dude in her bed"– not the escape or rescue or romance the temptation had promised. Here are the steps she shared and the pattern Gary's seen over and over again: You share marriage frustrations with someone of the opposite sex. You sense a spark—and feel seen or understood. You start caring how you look around them. You think about them when they're not around. That's the prelude. It doesn't feel dangerous yet, but it's where hearts begin to shift. Gary said, “If you can recognize it early, you can stop it before it ever grows.” From there, people will often begin to have an emotional affair: 5. You fantasize about being together. 6. Manipulating circumstances to spend more time together. 7. You start playful banter or flirtation. 8. Friends notice—and ask what's going on. This is a wake-up call. Gary said, “If people around you see it, something's already happening.” They're seeing what your heart is trying not to admit. Then, comes the actual physical affair: 9. Meeting together in secrecy. 10. Texting or calling in ways you hide from your spouse. 11. Physical intimacy. This is the final step—but it's never the first. We don't share this to shame. Maybe you've already partaken in some of these steps. We share because it is not too late to turn back. Gary said, “If you know the steps, you can stop at any one of them." When You Have Extramarital Feelings, Here's What to Do If you do end up experiencing feelings or attraction for someone other than your spouse—don't panic. Don't spiral into guilt. Instead, bring it into the light. Tell a trusted, godly friend of your same sex. Talk to your spouse if it's wise to do so. And most importantly—talk to Jesus. Ask Him to help you see the truth: that this isn't love, it's a lure. Temptation often feels like relief at first—but always ends in ruin. Then, put up strong, unapologetic guardrails: Stop all unnecessary contact with that person. Don't text, call, or “just check in.” If you work together, keep everything professional and public. And don't justify emotional intimacy as “just friendship.” And when your spouse asks you to stop interacting with that person, don't respond with pride. See that they are feeling threatened and care for them deeply in that. As Gary said, “You can't make your wife (or husband) feel cherished if you're protecting a relationship that threatens them.” What Makes Us Vulnerable to Affairs Gary also reminded me that temptation doesn't appear out of nowhere—it finds cracks that already exist. Stress. Loneliness. Unmet needs. Disappointment. He said, “There was a time early in my marriage when everything felt like failure—our baby cried constantly, money was tight, and I felt like I couldn't get anything right. So when someone made me feel ‘perfect,' it was intoxicating.” Can't we all relate to that in some way? When life feels heavy, a moment of admiration feels like oxygen. But the healing you're seeking isn't found in a new connection—it's found in deeper connection at home and with the Lord. But that's why we must run to the right source for validation. Your worth isn't in who smiles at you—it's in the God who delights in you. That's right. Not a perfect wife who is doing the perfect things, or a perfect husband who is saying the perfect words. But the Lord who is constant. Guarding Your Heart and Protecting Your Marriage Let Gary's wisdom anchor you: “Be as faithful to your spouse as God is faithful to you. Be as committed to your marriage as Christ is committed to His Church.” That kind of faithfulness isn't built on fear—it's built on love. When you keep Jesus at the center, attraction loses its power and intimacy becomes holy again. So today, ask yourself: What boundaries do I need to strengthen? Where have I let my guard down? And how can I draw closer—to Jesus and to my spouse—starting now? Again, we don't share this to frighten or shame. We are sharing to let you know that if you've had feelings for someone other than your spouse- you are not alone. You are not dirty, you are not broken. It doesn't mean you married the wrong person and it doesn't mean this new person is your soulmate. It means there was attraction and you are human. That is it. We love you and we are rooting for you! When we had sex it was duty sex where she wasn't present and there was no connection. I hated myself but I was wanting to cheat on her just to feel wanted and desired...[Now,] I have learned about how I was causing problems and putting way too much pressure on my wife...if I am not cheering her on, who is? The truth was no one was, no wonder she was depressed, withdrawn, and suicidal. I would be too. I now take pride in knowing that God entrusted her to me to lift her up, cheer her on, show her how good she is, encourage her, listen to her, and cherish her so she can grow...[Recently,] she told our daughters to move because she wanted to sit by me during movie night. She has taken steps towards intimacy with me on her own without me pressuring her." #marriagepodcast #marriedlife #marriageadvice

Today, we have a question from a listener about the experience of loss in ministry. It doesn't take long serving in ministry to face disappointment and loss. As a pastor, we are asked to lead through death but also through conflict, division, and transitions. The loss can add up. Pastor Jim shares how he has experienced seasons of loss and how we can sustain our hope and optimism in the midst of sadness.
