How To Rebuild Trust In A Relationship

Wise-ish

This time of year often brings relationships into sharper focus.February tends to celebrate a romanticized version of love — the ideal, effortless kind. But when real life doesn't match those expectations, old arguments resurface. Disappointment, betrayal, and unresolved ruptures find a way of coming back into the conversation. And as you already know if you've been listening to the podcast, real love isn't sustained by fantasy. It requires real work, especially when trust has been broken. The truth is that many people try to rebuild trust by rushing toward forgiveness or by hoping things can somehow go back to how they were. But that version of the relationship is gone. And honestly, it wasn't working for either of you.So in this week's episode, I walk you through a different path forward. Not back into the past…but toward a new normal — one that's more honest, transparent, resilient, and emotionally grounded. If you've been carrying questions like:“Can I trust them again?”“How do I know this won't happen again?”“Am I supposed to forgive… or protect myself?”This episode will help you slow down, ground yourself, and move forward with integrity.Episode timestamps:01:06 — Why rebuilding trust starts with trusting yourself04:07 — Creating a new normal instead of chasing the past06:34 — Seeking to understand the other person (without excusing harm)07:18 — The role of forgiveness — and why it can't be forced11:55 — Looking honestly at times you broke trust too13:53 — What happens if you decide to part ways14:51 — Reaching out for support when you don't want to do this aloneWhatever path you choose, rebuilding or releasing, my hope is that you do it from a place of self-trust rather than self-abandonment.That's how healing actually lasts.

Disappointment is one of those emotions we try to avoid at all costs. We brace for it, plan around it, and sometimes talk ourselves out of wanting things altogether just so we won't have to feel it. But what if disappointment isn't something to protect yourself from? What if it's actually pointing you toward growth? In this episode, I'm unpacking why disappointment feels so uncomfortable, why we instinctively avoid it, and how you can grow your capacity for it to live bigger, braver, and more honestly. Gay Men Going Deeper has never done an episode about a TV show before. There's a reason we did this one. Heated Rivalry isn't just popular. It landed at a very specific cultural moment for gay men, and the response to it points to something bigger than whether people liked the plot. In this off-the-cuff conversation, Michael and Matt explore why this story resonated so strongly, what emotional needs it taps into, and why certain depictions of gay love, sex, courage, and intimacy feel especially potent right now. This isn't a recap or a review. It's a conversation about why some stories carry more weight than others, and how paying attention to your reaction can become an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply. Send us a textEXPECTATION VS. REALITYDisappointment with Myself | Part 4Senior Pastor Keith StewartJanuary 25, 2026Many of us carry regret over past decisions, failures, or missed opportunities—and we're often harder on ourselves than anyone else. In “Disappointment With Myself” (Expectations vs Reality – Part 4), Pastor Keith Stewart explores why our past keeps intruding on our present and how the gospel frees us from shame, false guilt, and self-condemnation. You'll discover why God is not disappointed in you and how real change begins by accepting God's acceptance. If you're ready to stop living under regret and start living from grace, this message is for you.1. What part of the message felt most “for you” right now, why? 2. Which kind of backward-looking thinking do you struggle with most: woulda (decisions), coulda (failures), or shoulda (expectations)? What does it typically sound like in your head? 3. The message distinguishes examination from rumination. What's a practical sign that you've crossed the line from learning to self-punishing? 4. Where do you most feel false guilt (expectations from others, old “shoulds,” perfectionism)? How can you tell the difference between conviction and condemnation in your own experience? 5. The message says, “God is never disappointed,” because disappointment includes surprise and frustration. How does that idea challenge or heal your view of God? What makes it hard to believe? 6. What does it look like, concretely, to “send your past packing” this week? (One habit, one conversation, one confession, one boundary, one step of repair.) 7. “Seek progress, not perfection.” Where do you need to apply that in your spiritual life, relationships, habits, or recovery? 8. “Before we can become who we will be in Christ, we must accept who we are in Christ.” What's one identity statement from Scripture you need to rehearse daily right now?

Suffering exposes what we believe about God faster than success ever could. When affliction lingers, disappointment goes unresolved, and growth feels slower than we want, the question isn't whether God is present—it's whether our theology can carry the weight of real life. Too many believers inherit a framework that collapses under pressure, leaving them confused, bitter, or quietly disillusioned. This week on Win Today, Dr. Craig Keener joins me to rebuild a theology of suffering that can endure. We talk about why God is not in a hurry to mature us, how pressure actually forms spiritual resilience, and what it looks like to develop a mindset about affliction that produces endurance rather than erosion. This conversation doesn't minimize pain—it gives it meaning. If you're suffering, stalled, or carrying disappointment you haven't known how to name, this episode will help you reframe affliction as formation and discover the kind of maturity that only pressure can produce. Guest Bio Dr. Craig Keener is a leading New Testament scholar, historian, and theologian whose work has shaped global conversations on Scripture, the Holy Spirit, miracles, and suffering. He has authored dozens of academic and popular-level books and has taught and lectured internationally, bringing rigorous scholarship together with pastoral sensitivity and lived faith. Beyond Disappointment:: Birth Trauma

Holy Wild Birth

Birth is good. And birth is not tame.Birth is holy and wild. It is powerful, unpredictable, and not something we can fully control or make “safe” in the way modern culture often promises. When we forget that, we can be left confused or unprepared for how deeply a birth experience might impact us—even when everything looks fine from the outside. In this episode, we're talking about the difference between disappointment and trauma in birth. Disappointment often comes from unmet hopes or expectations. Trauma goes deeper. Trauma is a deeply distressing experience—or series of experiences—that overwhelms the nervous system and leaves a lasting imprint on the body, the mind, and our sense of safety. And trauma is not defined by what happened on a chart. It's defined by how the experience was received in the body.We talk about why it's so important to process hard or intense birth experiences, and why this work should be done with someone who understands both birth and trauma. Not someone who rushes to silver linings or spiritual bypassing—but someone who knows how to sit with the body's story and help it integrate what happened. We share supportive tools that can help the nervous system come back into regulation, including:Bilateral stimulation (EMDR, binaural tracks, walking, brainspotting, butterfly hug/tapping)Shaking and gentle movement to release stored stressEFT / tappingSimple supports like nourishment, warm baths, flower essences, rest, and deep gentleness with yourselfWe also touch on surprisingly practical tools like playing Tetris in the early aftermath of a hard experience, which has been shown to support memory integration. This conversation includes pieces of our own stories:Lauren's interrupted third stageBrooke's manual placenta removalBoth moments where necessary intervention still left an imprint that required care, time, and compassion to heal.We also talk about prevention—how having the right team, realistic expectations, and emotional support can cushion the wildness of birth. Birth does not need to be controlled to be held well. But it does need to be witnessed, respected, and supported. This episode is an invitation to approach birth honestly:to honor it as good, holy, and life-giving—and to acknowledge that its wildness sometimes leaves tender places that deserve gentleness, care, and wise support.Connect:Email us to say hi: holywildbirth@gmail.comPut in a request for future topics and/or submit a question for future Q&A episodes: Fill out the formApply to tell your birth story on the podcast: Holy Wild Birth Podcast : Guest ApplicationHang out with us and other Holy Wild Women in our private community (off Facebook): Rooted in Eden PMABecome a holy, wild birthkeeper with us inside Hearthmother JourneyFrom Lauren:InstagramMidwifery consults: Email  rootedinedenpma@gmail.comFrom Brooke:InstagramTrust God, Trust Birth Workshop - a 5-part high-level roadmap to a confident home birth (pay what you can)Faith-Filled Home Birth Workshop - a free, 3-part video series delivered to your inboxEmbrace Birth Journey - comprehensive and holistic faith-based home birth preparation (courses + private community)Intro and Outra Music Credit -Betty Dear By Blue Dot Sessions is licensed under a Creative Commons License.

Send us a textEXPECTATION VS. REALITYDisappointment with Others | Part 3Senior Pastor Keith StewartJanuary 18, 2026Sooner or later, people will disappoint us. Our spouse. Our friends. Our church. Even the people we love most—and the people who love us—will fall short. The question isn't if disappointment will happen, but what we will do with it when it does. This Sunday we'll talk about unrealistic expectations in our closest relationships, the power of our inner self-talk, and how discontent can either poison love—or mature it. If you've been wounded by someone close, weary from conflict, or tempted to give up on relationships altogether, join us in person or online as we discover a better way forward.Discussion Questions 1.  Where are you most tempted to confuse “disappointment with people” with “disappointment with God”? What helps you remember the difference—especially when the hurt is fresh? 2.  “Nobody can live up to all your expectations all the time—and nobody is meant to.” What expectations have you been placing on someone (spouse, friend, church, leader) that might be too heavy or unrealistic? 3.  Contentment vs. entitlement: Paul learned to be “satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed” (Phil. 4:11–13). What does “contentment in Christ” look like in your current relationships—and what would change if Christ was your primary source of joy? 4.  The message described how blame and resentment grow: obsession → keeping score → replay mode → pride-blindness. Which stage are you most prone to, and what is one practical way you can interrupt that spiral this week? 5.  Explanatory style: “always/never,” universalizing, and assuming God is against you can multiply misery. What are your most common “scripts” when you're disappointed (about others, yourself, or God)? How could you replace one script with something truer? 6.  Jesus met John's disappointment by welcoming questions, affirming the person, and redirecting expectations to truth. Which of those do you need most from God right now—and which one can you offer someone else who is hurting?

Managing Expectations and Disappointment in College (and in Life): Life Struggles No One Talks About

Never Perfect

Why does college feel so much harder than you expected it to be? This episode is about the struggles associated with adjusting to college, but many of the themes are universal and apply to other life stages and transitions as well.  Some of the biggest challenges in life involve managing expectations and dealing with disappointment. These challenges often come into play when you're navigating unknowns and big milestones such as going to college, developing new relationships, getting a new job, and more. College can be one of the biggest transitions of your life—new routines, new expectations, new environments, new friendships… and often a lot of grief under the surface. Many college students may be grieving their high school experience, missing old friends and family, and feeling overwhelmed by a new environment. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness are very common, especially during the first semester. However, some people do great at first, and difficult emotions may appear later as the novelty wears off and reality sets in. In today's episode, you'll hear the story of one student who almost transferred near the end of her first semester of college. So for those of you struggling in college—or with any phase of life—please remember: YOU ARE NOT ALONE ❤️ Tessa is currently a junior in college, but she had a very difficult first semester and was seriously talking about transferring when things started to turn around. She shares how her first semester didn't match what she expected, how it impacted her confidence, and why she felt like something must be wrong with her when it seemed like everyone else was having more fun. Dr. Beth and Tessa talk about how long it can take to build real friendships, how to handle uncomfortable social situations and loneliness, and why giving yourself time (often a full year) can make a huge difference. As you'll find out in this episode, struggling doesn't mean you made the wrong choice—it often means you're right in the middle of adjusting. This episode is for anyone who feels behind, left out, or overwhelmed by the pressure to “love college immediately.” Never lose faith that things can get better and that you have so much to offer others and the world. Also remember: things are often not the way they appear on social media. Social media is full of false impressions and false advertising, and most people don't post their lonely or anxious moments on Instagram. Some of the best advice from today's episode: open up, share your struggles with others, reach out, and invite people to do things. It can change their lives—and it can change yours. When you start sharing, you often find that you're not alone, and others feel less alone too. Life is very hard and incredibly beautiful at the same time. Share your unique and beautiful self with the world. You will find your people and your place—so never give up.

In this episode of "Lessons I Didn't Expect to Learn", Anna explores how reframing disappointment as information rather than a personal failure can be deeply freeing—especially for people pleasers. By recognizing that many disappointments reflect others' capacities, fears, and seasons (not our worth), we can release self-blame, soften resentment, and respond with more clarity, peace, and self-compassion.   Key Points: Disappointment isn't personal; it's information We often over-own disappointments that aren't ours Many disappointments reflect others' stress, fear, and limits Shifting perspective reduces shame and self-criticism Disappointment can reveal capacity and alignment in relationships People pleasers tend to internalize others' dissatisfaction You can't be everything for everyone Some disappointments are your responsibility—and you can own them Others' reactions are not a verdict on your worth Ask: "What is this situation showing me?" (no story attached) Clarity brings peace and reduces self-blame Viewing disappointment as data supports self-love and compassion Connect with Anna: Email: annamarie@happywholeyou.com / info@HappyWholeYou.com Website: www.happywholeyou.com / https://linktr.ee/happywholeyou Personal Website: www.DrAnnaMarie.com Instagram: @happywholeyou Personal Instagram: @Dr.Anna.Marie Facebook: Happy Whole You LinkedIn: Anna Marie Frank Venmo: @happywholeyou

Disappointment has a way of showing up unexpectedly—sometimes through life-altering hardship, and sometimes through smaller shifts that still sting deeply. This devotional reminds us that even when our disappointments feel insignificant compared to others’ struggles, they still matter to God because they matter to us. And while we may wish disappointing days would disappear completely, Scripture is honest that trouble is part of life. But so is God’s steady presence. One of the most comforting truths offered here is that disappointment is not proof that God is disappointed in us. It isn’t a sign that we’ve done something wrong or that we’ve fallen out of favor. Instead, God knows exactly where we are, and He has not abandoned us in the space we’re in. The devotional points to Psalm 18:19 as a reminder that God rescues and provides refuge because He delights in His children. That means even when circumstances feel cramped, heavy, or discouraging, God can still lead us into a “spacious place”—a place where peace is present, where protection is real, and where we can still see His blessings at work. God’s delight in us is constant. And in return, He invites us to find our delight in Him—even on disappointing days. That doesn’t mean ignoring sorrow or forcing happiness. It means turning toward the One who remains faithful, who offers refuge in the middle of our letdowns, and who is guiding us toward a future shaped by His goodness. Even in disappointment, we are never outside God’s care, His plan, or His delight. Main Takeaways Disappointment is part of life, but it is never proof that God is disappointed in you. God is not surprised by your circumstances—He is present and active in them. The Lord offers refuge and rescue in the very middle of discouragement. God delights in you consistently, even when your joy feels threatened. You can find true delight in God’s presence, even on hard days.
