Disappointment has a way of showing up unexpectedly—sometimes through life-altering hardship, and sometimes through smaller shifts that still sting deeply. This devotional reminds us that even when our disappointments feel insignificant compared to others’ struggles, they still matter to God because they matter to us. And while we may wish disappointing days would disappear completely, Scripture is honest that trouble is part of life. But so is God’s steady presence. One of the most comforting truths offered here is that disappointment is not proof that God is disappointed in us. It isn’t a sign that we’ve done something wrong or that we’ve fallen out of favor. Instead, God knows exactly where we are, and He has not abandoned us in the space we’re in. The devotional points to Psalm 18:19 as a reminder that God rescues and provides refuge because He delights in His children. That means even when circumstances feel cramped, heavy, or discouraging, God can still lead us into a “spacious place”—a place where peace is present, where protection is real, and where we can still see His blessings at work. God’s delight in us is constant. And in return, He invites us to find our delight in Him—even on disappointing days. That doesn’t mean ignoring sorrow or forcing happiness. It means turning toward the One who remains faithful, who offers refuge in the middle of our letdowns, and who is guiding us toward a future shaped by His goodness. When expectations collide with reality, disappointment isn't far behind. This Sunday we're starting a new series: “Expectation vs. Reality.” We'll talk honestly about disappointment with God—where it comes from, what it reveals about what we really believe, and how that disappointment can either spiral into discouragement… or become the doorway to deeper faith and healing. If you're carrying questions, confusion, or a heavy heart—you're not alone. And you don't have to pretend. If you know someone who's walking through a hard season, feel free to share this with them.”Discussion Questions 1. Expectations reveal themselves in pain - “Expectations are never apparent until they're unfulfilled.” Where in your life right now are unmet expectations creating disappointment—and what might that disappointment be revealing about what you truly believe (about God, yourself, or life)? 2. Stealth expectations - Brené Brown calls them “stealth expectations”—the expectations we don't even know we have. What are some “silent contracts” you've placed on God or other people (unspoken demands like “You should know,” “This shouldn't happen,” “I don't deserve this”)? How have those shaped resentment or shame? 3. The spiral of disappointment - Disappointment can move toward discouragement → disillusionment → depression → defeat.Where have you seen that progression at work in your own life (or someone close to you)? What are the early warning signs that tell you you're slipping into that spiral? 4. Sorting cause and blame - The message challenged “blueprint theology” and victim-blaming, and explored the nature of life (broken world), people (sin and freedom), and God (His heart breaks first). Which of those categories helps you most right now—and which one is hardest for you to accept emotionally? 5. God can handle the truth - The Psalms give us language for honest lament, anger, confusion, and grief—without pretending. What emotions do you most struggle to bring to God (anger, fear, disappointment, sadness, doubt)? What would it look like this week to pray more like a lament psalm—honest, unfiltered, and trusting? 6. Disorientation as a doorway - Brueggemann's pattern: orientation → disorientation → reorientation. Where would you say you are in that cycle right now? What might “reorientation” look like for you—not necessarily a quick fix, but a deeper, truer relationship with God in the middle of your disappointment?

No one likes to feel disappointed, but when you've gone through emotional abuse, that fear and avoidance is even stronger.  Growing up, you learned the only way you could have value as a person was by pleasing others and essentially preventing them from experiencing a negative emotion.  So if someone was disappointed in you, that was your fault, and thus, your responsibility to “fix.”  I also think of disappointment as a gateway emotion to things like: shame, guilt, regret, inadequacy, etc.  Disappointment isn't that big or heavy of an emotion; it's what you make that disappointment (or failure, or missed expectation) mean about you.  Keep listening as we dive further into this concept and how it impacts our ability to set goals, to believe in ourselves, to believe new things about ourselves, and fully heal from trauma and abuse.  Join me this Saturday, January 3rd for an all new workshop From Survival to Desire: Crafting Your Future Vision This is not about goal-setting. Anchored in Psalm 42, the call is to name discouragement honestly and then choose where to place hope. “Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember You” becomes a pattern for moving into a new year: lament without getting stuck, and praise God anyway. There is an acknowledgment that many questions do not get neat answers. Disappointment often reveals what was believed God “owed,” yet the invitation is to bring every “I don't know” to the God who knows and to entrust outcomes to Him.

The end of each year causes most people to reflect on what's happened in the previous 12 months. Amid big changes and maybe some successes, there are big disappointments. Perhaps even disappointment with God? In this passage, during which infant Jesus is presented at the Temple, we learn what faith looks like in the face of disappointment as it's put on display by Simeon, Joseph & Mary, and Anna the prophetess.

What are your favorite memories at Christmas? For me, it's putting up the Christmas tree, and then adding all the lights and ornaments and lighting up our living room.Every December we hang lights that drive out the darkness. But sometimes circumstances bring a darkness.The darkness of feeling lonely while you see everyone else with friends and family.The darkness of grief over lost Christmases with loved ones due to separation or death.The darkness of anxiety of being enough, doing enough, going enough. It's exhausting.The darkness of sin that produces shame and guilt that hang over souls like a thick fog that won't lift.The great news - Jesus conquers and drives out all darkness. Because the incarnation of Jesus is real, the light of the world has come and the darkness has not overcome Him. My darkness, your darkness, all darkness, has to flee in the presence of Jesus.In our Christmas season, we want to explore how the light of Jesus can drive away any darkness that overshadows our lives. So, come and bring all your stuff. You don't have to leave it at home when you come to Jesus. You don't have to pretend. Come and bring your darkness and surrender it and receive his light.Jesus truly is Light in the Darkness - and you will realize that He is Light in Your Darkness.
