A few years back, I hosted Dougie Mackay at my home on Vancouver Island for some pizza and a televised hockey game. I'd just caught his show in town and was struck by how he illuminated the wingspan of a story - the way it could carry an audience across centuries and landscapes with each sentence.Raised in the Scottish Highlands where storytelling is still in the water, Dougie has sold out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. He even holds a Guinness World Record as part of the longest continuous storytelling session (74 hours, set in the central square of Marrakesh, where storytelling is also heritage). He describes his own work as firing on the edge of the wild.In this episode of The Crow's Nest, Dougie joins me to explore the medicine of story for these times - and for men in particular. We speak in support of the upcoming Cascadia Men's Conference, happening August 6-9 in the Squamish Valley just north of Vancouver. The conference draws its DNA from the Minnesota Men's Conference, now forty years strong, and we're gathering elders and younger men alike to light a fire we hope will burn yearly.Dougie won't be with us in person this August (he'll be at the Edinburgh Fringe with his show A Wolf Shall Devour the Sun), but his spirit is woven into what we're building. From Farm Bill's to international market access, the National Association of State Departments of Ag encompasses it all. Feeding 10 will cost over $75 in total. Beef is the big leader on price increases, up over 23% compared to a year ago. Explaining that high price on beef is exactly what they'll be focused on in the Beef Tent and WI Farm Technology Days. The state's largest outdoor farm show will happen at Redetzkes’ No Joke Dairy in Marathon County. Although it's a dairy operation - the beef tent will at the show will help attendees understand what's happening with beef production in the state and beyond. Kiley Allan visits with Dennis Breneman, Chairman of the Beef Tent and a member of the State Executive Committee @ Farm Technology Days. He's managing his herd of Scottish Highland cattle and happy for the opportunity to educate consumers. Another 2% increase in milk production announced for the month of May. Jenny Wackershauser, dairy analyst with EverAg says that's what the market has come to expect. She notes that the U.S. cheese price remains competitive globally, and we'll need the international sales to stay robust. "Living in Scotland and spending time in the Scottish Highlands, it is clear to me how integral water and waterways are to the landscape and existence. I sense that humanity has all but forgotten this. There seems to be a belief that we can treat these precious ecosystems in any way we see fit without a care that we may be harming or killing them. When I first heard the recording of the Lech River I was instantly drawn to the serenity of the river and the peaceful lapping of the water. The sounds truly emphasised the beauty and importance of this cherished environment. "This recording focusses on the final part of the Lech River before it flows into the Danube. The written description noted this section as the Lech's ‘quiet goodbye' and I felt this was a perfect focus for my composition. It made me consider if the river were to actually say goodbye and disappear forever due to human interference. What if the water were to flow from the Lech River into the Danube until every last drop had gone, never to return, leaving an arid, lifeless riverbed. I wanted ‘The Quiet Goodbye' to focus on this idea with a narrative of loss; a lament for a river that once was, a love song of sorts, a song of yearning for the departed."The satellite imagery shows the obvious changes in the water channel over time. It reminded me of the way human vessels bifurcate and degenerate, often becoming stenosed or occluded due to poor lifestyle choices. It struck me that the Lech River and surrounding landscape also suffered from these poor human choices and wanted this element to be part of the lyric."The song starts with voices moving over and through one another to convey the flowing sense of the river and lapping riverbank. This is followed by the piano which again, tries to convey the feel of water. In 2015, the media became obsessed with one man's attempts to grow tea in the Scottish Highlands.  The BBC profiled him on the One Show. Radio reporters flocked to interview him. Even the Chinese national news agency reported his work.  Tam O'Braan (as he was then known) was the first to ever sell Scottish tea, and the press went wild.  Fornum and Mason bought his leaves. The Dorchester created a new Scottish tea-tasting menu. Barack Obama reportedly tried his tea, and the Queen loved it. Tam's business started bringing in hundreds of thousands of pounds.
