What can memory tell us about the space between fiction and nonfiction? First released in September 2020, author Timothy Denevi shows us how to turn memory into story and to shift our focus from current events to writing in this Inspiration Takeover, a series of mini-episodes with different writers who offer us a little dose of inspiration.
S2 EP #6: Timothy Denevi grew up with ADHD and was among the first generation of boys prescribed medication for this disorder in the 1980s. Upon having an adverse reaction to the medication he was prescribed for ADHD, as a child he began the journey to finding the right treatment. As an adult, Tim wrote a book about his experience titled “Hyper: A Personal History of ADHD”, which is a remarkable book both for its sensitive portrait of a child's experience, as well as for its thorough exploration of a remarkably complex and controversial mental condition and its treatment. In this conversation, Timothy shares how his life has been impacted by ADHD and how he eventually found healing through individualized treatment and painstaking research. Produced by MedCircle. Hunter S. Thompson is often misremembered as a wise-cracking, drug-addled cartoon character. In the new book Freak Kingdom: Hunter S. Thompson's Manic Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism, professor and author Timothy Denevi attempts to reclaim Thompson for what he truly was: a fearless opponent of corruption and fascism, one who sacrificed his future well-being to fight against it, rewriting the rules of journalism and political satire in the process. Freak Kingdom tells the dramatic account of how Thompson saw the danger of Richard Nixon early and embarked on a life-defining campaign to stop it—and the devastating price he paid for it.Freak Kingdom is the second book from George Mason professor Timothy Denevi. His essays on politics, sport, and religion have appeared in The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Salon, and Literary Hub, where he serves as the nonfiction editor.

At a time when journalism is under siege when the attacks sometimes result in too much caution when the goal of politicians is to attack journalist like they are working the refs, it’s worth thinking about times when we’ve seen full-throated, muscular and sometimes participatory journalism. The kind practiced by the likes of Jimmy Breslin, or H.L. Menken, George Plimpton, Truman Capote, Norman Mailer or Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson had the opportunity to be present for many world-changing moments. How he saw them, and how he reported them, may have shaped a generation of readers and it may still be in the very DNA of how we consume news today. Timothy Denevi captures the zeitgeist of the Thompson moment in Freak Kingdom: Hunter S. Thompson's Manic Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism My conversation with Tim Denevi:
