The Popeye Mindset and Self-Improvement, inspiration, motivation, mindset, success mindset, productivity, life advice, life transformation, mindset growth, self mastery, success habits, high performance habits, positive psychology In this thought-provoking video, I explore the popular phrase made famous by Popeye the Sailor Man: "I am what I am." While this attitude might seem like self-acceptance on the surface, I challenge the mindset behind it—arguing that it can become a trap that limits personal growth and potential. Using this classic cartoon analogy, I dive into the importance of striving for continual self-improvement. But also highlight the other side of the coin: the danger of becoming so obsessed with growth that you never feel fulfilled. In this video, you'll learn why growth is essential—but so is gratitude. True success lies in the balance between becoming more and appreciating how far you've already come. Whether you're on a personal development journey or simply feeling stuck, this video/audio offers a powerful reminder: You're not fixed—you're capable of change. But don't forget to celebrate your progress along the way. Watch the message here: https://youtu.be/QH80H-vvzrM

I found a post that fit exactly with what I did yesterday with one of my best friends. From Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_), “Proof the best things in life are free: Sunrises, Sunsets, Hugs, Conversations, Love, Waking Up, Nature, Laughter.” The breakfast that I had with one of my best friends, Scott, got me thinking about the fact that I've been through all the items on this list (and more) with him throughout our lives. I've also been blessed to have others be a part of this list too. There are so many other things that are free in life - recognizing them along with being lucky enough to share them with others, is a key to what I think is a very happy & fulfilled life. Going through this list on this episode, really got my emotions going as I'm seeing (again), how blessed I really am. When I connect things like this list to special people in my life, I get inspired & feel a tremendous amount of encouragement.  Scott helped to remind me of both again as I shared some breakfast time with him.  Find those things that are “free” in life & not only connect with them for yourself, but also look to connect them to others in your life too.   Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Saw a post that got me thinking about what some people call other people crazy, when they look to help others win.  This came from Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) “Call me crazy but I love to see people happy and succeeding. Life is a journey, not a competition.” Just imagine - like my good buddy Coach Rich Bowers told me and my leadership students so many years ago, life is all about creating “win - win” types of relationships - and if we had more people looking to create those!! So many people LOVE to criticize, complain, blame, put others down, etc. The world needs less of that for sure. It seems social media has made it easier for those with a negative attitude.

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

388 Changing Dynamics   Growth is something that cannot easily be stopped. Whether it be the weeds in a garden, or the inquisitive mind of a child, growth in all is something that should be encouraged and nurtured, even if it's by our own hands, so that we can become the people we know we can be. Someone better than who we were yesterday. In today's episode, Sarah Elkins and Carlos Joaquin discuss the importance of Curiosity, Growth, Unity, and the Dynamics in not just the work place but in the home life, and how incredibly important it is to encourage those around you and to be the leader your peers need you to be.    Highlights Curiosity and how it makes people with power uncomfortable and people in need of strength, powerful. Moving on, even when it's hard, because that's what is best for you.  Standing together, especially when faced with strife, is the strongest thing you can do. Comparison is the enemy of growth and unity. Creating a safe environment to express something and not be dismissed or treated differently, so everyone can be apart of the discussion. Growing, and helping others grow, through finding Your community.   Quotes “We decided we're not going to be a part of this anymore, and we're going to say goodbye, and we did, and it was hard, but I think we found strength in each other, and we were united.”  “Psychological safety is a key factor of any learning and development. And if you can't have that then, there's always this lingering or this resistance or this inability to even share or to connect.”  “You focus on that person and you find out, what do they care about, how can I help them get a little bit of that into their lives? Because it's more than numbers, it's more than metrics, it's caring about this person and this person will deliver those numbers, this person will deliver those metrics.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What is something that happened in your life, early in your life, that you can now attach to your values? That you can look back, maybe at the time you didn't see it, but you can look back now and see it as a pivotal moment that made you who you are right now. And how can you reframe the story? So that, like Carlos does, you find those silver lining moments, that you understand intuitively and innately, that you can do better. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Carlos (from his website) I work with small businesses, founders, and teams to improve communication, leadership, and customer experience. Whether it's a one-on-one coaching session, a team workshop, or consulting on systems, I help people move from scattered to strategic — with heart. Check out Carlos's LinkedIn and Instagram! As well as his website!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

Specialising in qualitative research methods, particularly film ethnography, her work has taken her around the world—observing people's everyday lives and exploring everything from toilet roll and white goods to how people manage their money. She has also helped policymakers navigate the future of health services and travel. Ella is the Vice Chair of the Association of Qualitative Researchers (AQR) board and sits on the Market Research Society (MRS) Social Inclusion Group. In this engaging conversation, Ella shares her journey of embracing uncertainty and the paradox of confidence in admitting what we don't know. We explore the importance of presence in parenting, the significance of her parents as role models, freedom within constraints, and the need for research to reflect the voices of the unheard. For me, this discussion really emphasises the significance of lived experience in understanding—and truly seeing—each other. For more of Ella's work, check out the following:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ella-fryer-smith-91281723/Website: https://www.doyou-research.com/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life if you'd like to explore your own lines of self-inquiry through 1-on-1 coaching, take part in my 5-week What is a Good Life? group courses, discuss experiences I create to stimulate greater trust, communication, and connection, amongst your leadership teams, or you simply want to get in touch.- For the What is a Good Life? podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- Exploring one-on-one coaching: https://www.whatisagood.life/p/one-on-one-coaching- What is a Good Life? I just came across one of the simplest, yet strongest reminders for life and it came from Mind Essentials (@Mind_Essentials). This simple thought for all of us is: “When you get tired, learn to rest - not quit!” - Banksy. In today's busy world with so many things going on, it is really easy to keep pushing ourselves. There are moments for sure where we need to pause, take a deep breath, rest and then keep going. In order to be our best, so we can be our best for others and chasing after our dreams and goals; we do need to take moments of recharging so we can feel like we can keep going. I found this message to be really comforting. I hope you get comforted and inspired by it too.

Send us a textWhat would you tell your younger self? That question sparked a fascinating exploration of life lessons, hard-won wisdom, and the unexpected gifts that come with age and experience. The magical thing about turning 40 isn't just the physical changes – it's the powerful ability to look back across two decades of adulthood and recognize how much knowledge you've gained. Like having coffee with your 20-year-old self, this reflective vantage point reveals truths that could have changed everything.Financial literacy tops the list of crucial knowledge many wish they'd gained earlier. Understanding how to make your money work for you, managing student debt, and avoiding the trap of spending every dollar you earn creates freedom that compounds over time. Equally important is developing a value-driven plan for life – not just career goals, but clarity about what truly matters to you. When your choices align with your core values, fulfillment follows naturally.Perhaps the most liberating realization? Nobody is paying as much attention to your choices as you think they are. The freedom to fail, change direction, and reimagine your path without fear of judgment opens worlds of possibility. Your education and experience equip you with transferable skills that can flourish in countless contexts – you're not locked into any single trajectory.Creating boundaries, developing a meditation practice, freeing yourself from body image obsessions, and simply taking the trip when your gut tells you to – these lessons emerge repeatedly as game-changers. The most painful regrets center not on what we did, but what we didn't do when we felt that internal pull.Whether you're approaching 40, looking back from beyond it, or still navigating your 20s, this conversation offers perspective that might just change how you view the journey ahead. What would you tell your younger self over coffee? And perhaps more importantly – what might your future self wish you understood right now? Please be sure to checkout our website for previous episodes, our psych-approved resource page, and connect with us on social media! Send us a textWe talk a lot about habits, but what we don't talk about enough is tolerance—what you let slide, what you justify, what you slowly start accepting. In this episode, I explore the asymmetry of tolerance—how we unconsciously expand our tolerance for destructive behaviors, while simultaneously shrinking our tolerance for the discomfort that accompanies growth and success. You're going to learn how to spot your tolerance leaks—those small, seemingly harmless decisions that eventually cost you your fitness, your focus, your finances, your relationships, and even your identity. We'll break it into two parts:How to tighten destructive tolerance by setting hard limits and increasing your awareness. How to train successful tolerance—raising your threshold for resistance, rejection, and effort—so you can stretch your identity and win in the long run. This isn't about being perfect—it's about raising your standard and shrinking the gap between who you are and who you're meant to be.Let's get it! Support the show
