THE DEVIL WITHIN THE NEW MONSTERS: THE BUNNY MAN Episode One: The Man on Guinea Road In October 1970, along a dark stretch of Guinea Road in Fairfax County, Virginia, a young couple sitting inside their car saw someone emerge from the woods. The stranger appeared to be wearing a white suit with long rabbit ears. He began shouting about private property, claimed to have their license plate number—and then hurled a hatchet through the passenger window. The couple escaped. Police recovered the weapon. The man in the rabbit costume vanished. If that were the end of the story, the Bunny Man might have survived as little more than a spectacularly bizarre newspaper clipping. But ten days later, another encounter was reported nearby. This time, security guard Paul Phillips discovered a rabbit-costumed figure at an unfinished house, carrying a long-handled axe and reportedly chopping at the structure while complaining about trespassers. Two incidents had given Northern Virginia something much harder to dismiss: a pattern. In Episode One of our three-part journey into The Bunny Man, we go beneath the legend to the landscape that created it. Long before suburban Washington pushed into Fairfax County, this was a place shaped by Indigenous history, colonial Virginia, George Washington and George Mason, the American Revolution and the Civil War. By 1970, another invasion was underway as farms and forests disappeared beneath subdivisions, highways and construction sites. That transformation provides an irresistible backdrop for what happened on Guinea Road. The original Bunny Man emerged from woods being consumed by development, repeatedly complained about trespassing and carried the very tools traditionally used to clear the landscape around him. Whether any of that symbolism was intentional is impossible to know, but the timing helped create an almost perfect American monster: something lurking along the uneasy boundary where countryside was becoming suburbia. We'll also trace how two documented encounters began mutating almost immediately through newspapers, telephones, school buses and playgrounds. Before the internet could make legends viral, children and teenagers were already remarkably efficient distribution networks, repeating stories, changing details and filling unanswered questions with increasingly elaborate explanations. And somewhere along the way, the Bunny Man moved. The famous Bunny Man Bridge near Clifton was not the location of either documented 1970 encounter. Yet as the original construction sites disappeared and unfinished houses became ordinary homes, the secluded railroad overpass remained beneath the trees. Eventually the legend acquired the bridge, an asylum, escaped killers, mutilated rabbits and murder—transforming an unidentified man in a bizarre costume into something supernatural. But before we get to the ghost stories, we begin with the part that remains considerably stranger because it appears to have actually happened. Someone wore the rabbit costume. Someone carried the weapons. And more than half a century later, nobody has conclusively established who was inside it. George Mason has reached unprecedented heights over Vanessa Blair-Lewis' first five years at the helm. The Pats won their first Atlantic 10 tournament championship in 2025 and a share of their first regular-season title in 2026. The Patriot head coach joins Ian Sacks on this episode of the "Anything But Mid" podcast.

Bryson Johnson's path runs through Waterloo, Ontario's St. David's Catholic High School before landing at Bucknell University, where he became a four-year standout and two-year captain under head coach Dave Paulsen. He helped lead the Bison to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2011, 2013) and an NIT trip (2012), finishing 11th in program history with 1,384 career points and earning Second Team All-Patriot League honours. After college, the 6'2” guard played professionally with the Fraport Skyliners in Germany and spent a season with the Orangeville A's in Canada's NBL, before pivoting to coaching. His coaching career has run almost entirely alongside Paulsen: a graduate manager stint at George Mason, an assistant year at Brown, a return to George Mason, then two America East Championship seasons at Vermont, where he helped coach two straight America East Players of the Year. When Paulsen took over at Holy Cross in 2023, Johnson followed as associate head coach — a role he still holds, with Paulsen calling him the best assistant in his 33-year coaching career. Collin Kohlasch is an Athletic Performance Coach at Lindenwood University. Kohlasch joined Lindenwood in 2019 and oversees training for the women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse and women's ice hockey programs. In addition to his collegiate role with the Lions, he also holds a strength and conditioning role with USA Hockey, where he works with national camps over the summer. Kohlasch is also a strength coach within the New England District for USA Hockey and outside of that, has served in consulting roles for various lacrosse programs. Prior to Lindenwood, he spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at George Washington University working with the baseball, men's rowing, swimming and diving, and women's water polo teams. Kohlasch began his coaching career at his alma mater, George Mason University, in 2016 as an intern coach. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, he also spent time in the private sector working from athletes from youth to the professional ranks in their respective sports at Power Train Sports and Fitness from 2016-2017 as well as Inside Edge Strength from 2017-2019. A former lacrosse player in his own right, Kohlasch was the vice president and team captain of the George Mason club lacrosse team. He remains active himself in the weight room and trains year-round while balancing the rigors of the collegiate coaching schedule. And Danoy got his start here, as a student at George Mason University. Danoy's path in national security didn't begin in a situation room. It began in a classroom – the place where a young person first learns about thinking under pressure, judging information, weighing options, and making hard decisions. Now, as an adjunct faculty member at George Mason's Schar School of Policy and Government, Danoy is teaching students who are travelling the same path he did. Coach Andy Fox shares his journey from being a standout basketball player at Cornell (Iowa) to becoming the Associate Head Coach at George Mason University.Andy got his start in the profession as Graduate Assistant at Tennessee under Buzz Peterson, he was retained when Bruce Pearl took the reins, the Volunteers captured the SEC East Championship in 2006 and earned 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.He went on to join the coaching staff at The Citadel under Ed Conroy and he helped propel the Bulldogs to a school-record 20 wins and the program's first postseason appearance in 2009. Coach Conroy took Andy with him when he accepted the job at Tulane. After five seasons at Tulane, Coach Fox joined the coaching staff at Louisiana Tech serving under Eric Konkol.After four seasons at Louisiana Tech he moved to Nashville and served in a multitude of roles under Jerry Stackhouse at Vanderbilt. The Commodores made a pair of NIT appearances and had their best season in over a decade during his time in Nashville.Coach Fox spent the 2024-25 season coaching at Army West Point under Kevin Kuwik. In 2024-25, Fox helped lead the Black Knights to a historic season, which included the program's first postseason win in 55 years.Tony Skinn hired Andy Fox to his George Mason University coaching staff in June 2025 and they pioneered the Patriots to the program's best-ever overall (18-1) and A-10 starts (6-0). They became the fastest in school history to reach 20 victories (22), they earned a spot in the 2025 NIT. In June 2026 Coach Skinn promoted Fox to an Associate Head Coach.

Tim Teefy is the Assistant AD for Olympic Sports Performance at Temple University. Teefy joined the Temple athletics program in 2015 as the head Olympic strength & conditioning coach before being promoted to director of Olympic sports performance in 2016 and later in 2018 to his current position at Assistant AD for Olympic Sports Performance. Currently oversees training for the women's basketball team while overseeing the 19 Olympic varsity sports and a staff of seven. Prior to joining the Owls, Teefy spent three years as the head strength & conditioning coach at Villanova University where he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the strength and conditioning department for 19 Division 1 varsity teams, working specifically with men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, field hockey and men's and women's soccer. He held a similar position as head strength and conditioning coach at High Point University for three years before joining the Wildcats. Teefy also gained experience on the strength staff at George Mason University and Georgetown University in addition to being an adjunct faculty member while at George Mason. Coach Teefy is a Master Strength & Conditioning Coach through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association earning the highest honor in the profession in 2020. This episode highlights an often-missed story: the Declaration of Independence didn't just shape the U.S. Constitution—it directly shaped state constitutions, many of which echo its natural-rights language more explicitly than the federal charter. Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick argues that reading state constitutional provisions through the Declaration can strengthen enforceable limits on government power. The conversation reframes the Declaration from anniversary rhetoric into a practical interpretive tool in living state constitutional law. Bolick traces a two-way influence between the Declaration and early state charters, pointing to founding-era texts like Virginia's 1776 Declaration of Rights as a roadmap for Jefferson's phrasing—and noting that later state constitutions continued to incorporate Declaration principles such as equality, popular sovereignty, and inalienable rights. Layton, Greg, and Ethan react in real time. Greg calls the NCAA "punked." Ethan says it feels like a PR move driven by Big 12 pressure. Layton ties it directly to the Will Wade situation, because if you want to talk about ethics in college athletics, you can't do it without talking about both.Then the Will Wade investigation. NC State is not letting this go quietly. The timeline is damning, LSU's season ended March 11, Wade resigned March 25, he was introduced at LSU March 26, and the buyout was set to drop from $5 million to $3 million on April 1. NC State Vice Chancellor Allison Newhart wrote that the school has reason to suspect LSU influenced efforts to avoid or delay notice of Wade's recruitment to save money on the buyout. LSU responded by asking NC State to sign a legal waiver. NC State refused. Wade's response to all of it? "They're pretty mad for a coach they didn't think was very good." Ethan calls it a Captain Obvious situation. Greg says you hold people accountable. And the conversation turns to the real question, does NC State have a case, and what are they actually going after?Then the new Report Card segment debuts, and Layton, Greg, and Ethan grade every one of Chris Hart's moves in his first two weeks as head coach. First up is a name we hadn't heard before, Mississippi State catcher Andrew Raymond, who chose NC State over multiple SEC schools specifically because of the program's catcher development history. All-Rookie A-10 as a freshman at George Mason before transferring to Mississippi State. Greg and Ethan both land at B-plus. Then Hunter Warren gets an A, Ethan makes the case that Warren has been better than Luke Nixon in Year 1 and Year 2 comparisons. Chet Lax gets a B-minus from Ethan, not a reflection on Lax himself but on where he slots in a rotation that still needs more arms. Jesse Gutierrez gets a B, Greg hears from a former San Jose State teammate that Gutierrez sits 89 to 91 as a starter and bumps to 92-93 out of the bullpen. McCall Biemiller gets a C from Ethan and an incomplete from Greg — 13 career innings is simply not enough data. West Aussie filmmaker Miley Tunnecliffe makes the shift from shorts to features with her debut feature length film Proclivitas. This familial horror-drama film features Clare (an impressive grounded performance from Rose Riley), an addict in recovery who returns to her hometown to tidy up her mother's house after her sudden death. Returning home, Clare connects with her old flame Jerry (a superb George Mason), and the two bond over an unresolved trauma from their youth. As Clare's time at home continues, the demons that plague her mind and memories start to re-emerge. The following interview with Miley sees her talking through her process of working in comedy and then shifting to horror, the grounded nature of the film, and more. Proclivitas recently opened the 2026 WA Made Film Festival where Miley and producer Kate Separovich were in attendance. The film opens in Australian cinemas on 19 March 2026.
