Jane Campion is famous for The Piano and a baby grand plays a crucial role in her new film The Power of the Dog, in which Benedict Cumberbatch plays a heavy smoking, unwashed and deeply troubled rancher in 1920s Montana. Briony Hanson reviews the film for Front Row and considers the lengths to which actors will go to create a character. All the nominees for this year's Turner Prize are artistic collectives. In the run-up to the award ceremony, Front Row will hear what the prize means to each of them. This evening, we hear from Cooking Sections, an artistic duo who reflect on the climate emergency and how we can make the food we eat more environmentally friendly. When he accepted the Booker Prize earlier this month for his novel The Promise, South African author Damon Galgut said: ‘This has been a great year for African writing and I'd like to accept this on behalf of all the stories told and untold, the writers heard and unheard from the remarkable continent that I'm part of. Please keep listening to us, there's a lot more to come…' Tonight we shine a spotlight on contemporary literature from his home country of South Africa and bring Damon together in conversation from Cape Town with the award-winning debut author of Scatterlings, Rešoketšwe Manenzhe. Can the American republic survive without a religious reawakening? Are there visible signs of a third Great Awakening in America today? Who are our modern heroes? Our esteemed guest this week is Mark Meckler. He is one of America's modern heroes. Mark co-founded the Tea Party in the late 2000's, invigorated politically by the Bush administration's abandonment of free market economics and by the Obama administration's failure to deliver on the material promises made in the domain of change. Today, Mark is the founder and President of Citizens for Self-Governance, a political nonprofit organization known widely for its Convention of States Action initiative. Mark is a licensed attorney, devoted husband, and loving father. And? He played high school football with John Elway. My encounter with Mark was one of complete chance, as we were seated alongside one another for a recent flight into Texas. Our conversation was one which nurtured my soul and which overlapped in a cosmic way with our central theme here on Law and Legitimacy. Journey with us as we unpack Mark's early life in sunny southern California, his decision to focus on more important things in college than veterinary medicine, the early gravity of real estate development in his legal career, and the macro events that catalyzed Mark's emergence as a modern force of principled political activism. You'll hear why Mark left his own organization in 2012, the inspiration George Mason plays for Mark, especially through Convention of the States' objective to restrike the elements of our United States Constitution, and you may even walk away having assigned yourself a bit of homework. I certainly did. It only took us 61 episodes, but we finally punctuate our existential crisis talk on a note of optimism. Find Mark on social media: @MarkMeckler on Twitter; @realmarkmeckler on Instagram; @markmecklerofficial on Facebook. Visit Citizens for Self-Governance and Convention of States Action to get involved. Follow Law and Legitimacy everywhere we are. Subscribe to Norm's Patreon. The early college basketball season continues to provide nuggets of opportunity and Brad is eyeing George Mason and Maryland. In Bonus Time the guys have more hockey, NBA and college basketball.

They wrap up the episode with a spotlight on the upcoming tournaments in college hoops: the Maui Invitational (36:42), the Charleston Classic (39:17), the Myrtle Beach Invitational (41:02), and the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam (42:36). Game previews include Maryland vs. George Mason (02:28), Dayton vs. Lipscomb (05:04), Loyola Marymount vs. Little Rock (07:48), Creighton vs. Brown (11:32), Memphis vs. Western Kentucky (14:23), Baylor vs. Central Arkansas (16:58), St. John's vs. Fairleigh Dickinson (18:43), Xavier vs. Ohio State (21:40), Wichita State vs. Arizona (24:03), a hypothetical match-up of Michigan and Arizona (25:21), Purdue vs. North Carolina (25:56), Tennessee vs. Villanova (27:46), Oakland vs. Toledo (29:31), St. Peter's vs. Wagner (31:25), UTSA vs. IUPUI (34:06), Houston vs. Butler (38:30), St. Bonaventure vs. Boise State (39:24), Davidson vs. New Mexico State (41:11), Utah State vs. Penn (41:32), Old Dominion vs. Indiana State (42:12), and Colorado State vs. Bradley (42:43).
With the 2021-22 men's basketball season upon us - the team plays Central Washington tonight in their lone exhibition game - it's time to break down what's expected from this year's Hoop Dawgs. And the Dawgman interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - are joined by former Hoop Dawg Jason Crandall as he offers up his insight into the new players that he's gotten a chance to play against over the years. And it's always a good thing to start the podcast off with some breaking news; senior forward Reagan Lundeen has been put on scholarship for his final year, according to Crandall. That certainly answers the question of how Hopkins was going to use the one scholarship available for this season. They start with the incoming transfers, talking about the inclusion of Terrell Brown, Jr., Daejon Davis, Emmitt Matthews, Jr., P.J. Fuller, and others, and how this particular group of transfers offers something different from the previous groups of transfers that have shown up at Montlake, starting on defense. How will Mike Hopkins use the lineup? Will it be pretty static with the starters, or do they think he'll mix and match more? And how will an infusion of length help the Huskies run Hopkins' Syracuse-based zone? The guys then move to the other newcomers, namely Jackson Grant and Langston Wilson. Jack has been able to see Jackson evolve over the years, being from Grant's hometown of Olympia. Crandall, with his UW-based contacts, offers insight into some of the players that stayed with the Huskies after last season, starting with Nate Roberts and moving to Cole Bajema, Jamal Bey, Riley Sorn, and others. Talk then moves to the non-conference schedule and games against teams like Northern Illinois, Northern Arizona, the Crossover Classic in South Dakota (including games with Nevada, George Mason, and South Dakota State), and then the rest of the schedule - including a stretch of games against Arizona, UCLA, and at Gonzaga in early December, that will really test the mettle of this team before the Hoop Dawgs jump headfirst into Pac-12 play just before the new year. To finish the 45-minute preview podcast up, the guys give their thoughts on just how successful the 2021-22 Huskies are going to be. With talk that this particular group is much tighter than ever before, it sounds great. But we've seen this movie play out before. Is this year going to be different? Will they be able to out-perform their 11th place league expectations? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dr. George Mason and Randy continue their conversation about faith communities and church culture in 2021. It is important to realize that culture is not only found “out there” in secular society; the churches and communities of faith we serve also have our own cultures and sets of “rules.” It is essential that we continually examine our church cultures to see if we are, indeed, reflecting the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.

Coach Ernie Nestor shares his journey from growing up in West Virginia to being a NCAA D1 basketball coach for over 50 years! The West Virginia native talks about how he got in start as a high school coach before breaking into the college ranks at James Madison University. Wake Forest hired him (for the first of three stints) and he coached Muggsy Bogues before moving across the country to coach at California to reunite with former JMU Head Coach Lou Campenelli. George Mason hired him to be their Head Coach after Rick Barnes left for Providence, Coach Nestor led them to their first NCAA Tournament in school history in only his second season in Fairfax. After GMU he returned to Wake Forest where he coached Tim Duncan, Josh Howard, Randolph Childress, Rusty LaRue, Darius Songaila, Rodney Rogers, and other Wake Forest greats. Once Coach Odom departed for South Carolina he went with him before eventually being named the Head Coach at Elon. Coach Nestor eventually became a NBA Scout for the New Jersey Nets before accepting a position at Penn State under Ed DeChellis. Frank Haith hired him to be an Assistant Coach at Missouri - which was in the only Power 5 Conference that he hadn't coached at yet. While at Missouri he coached Kim English who is currently the Head Coach at George Mason. The veteran coach reunited with Ed DeChellis at Navy and remained there until he retired in 2017. The NABC "Guardian of the Game" recipient came out of retirement to coach alongside Brad Greenberg with the Kosovo National Team and when Danny Manning called him about returning to Wake Forest, he returned to Winston Salem. Ernie Nestor is a living legend and shares phenomenal advice for coaches of all ages!
