“Your first year is not going to be perfect. You're not going to feel like you're having a lot of success a lot of the time because you're figuring out how to work within a school system, how to work with other teachers, with parents, with students that may not be too much younger than you if you start teaching high school. So you do your best, and you do a lot of reflection at the end of every day, at the end of every week, and you just prepare to wake up and then try something different.”Ross Cawthon is a graduate teaching assistant at Louisiana State University, where he is progressing towards a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting with a minor emphasis in Music Education. He is the instructor of record for undergraduate choral conducting and a teaching assistant for the LSU A Cappella Choir and LSU Chamber Singers. Additionally, he is the Music Director at University Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge. Before coming to LSU, Ross was the Director of Choirs at DeLand High School in Deland, Florida, where he taught choir, piano, AP Music Theory and IB Music. The DeLand High Chorus has performed across the US, and was invited to sing at the Florida Music Educators Association conference in 2023.In addition to his choral interests, Ross has a passion for the poetry and music of J.R.R. Tolkien, barbecue, and exercising. He lives in Baton Rouge with his wife Kristina, who is a singer and licensed speech-language pathologist. To get in touch with Ross, you can find him on Instagram (@rossisastore) or Facebook (@ross.cawthon.3).Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace HudsonBoomers, Bucks, and Bling PodcastUnlock the secrets to financial success with the Boomers, Bucks, and Bling...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

This week we are recording from University Presbyterian Church in Austin following the Texas Impact fall board meeting. It is always a good day when the Texas Impact board gets together. A room full of Texas faith leaders from various traditions committed to creating a more just and equitable Texas. It can't get better than that right? So, we decided to share some of the fun with you, in a conversation with three of our newer board members talking about why justice ministries are important, what they are paying attention to and what we can do.   In the conversation we mentioned Ballot Ready. This is a tool to help you or your congregation help your community participate in the elections and help you keep track of the impact your efforts are having. We hope you will consider signing up to use Ballot Ready with the link below. If you have questions, email engagement@texasimpact.org.  txfaith.org/BallotReady

In this part, we listen to a poem written by Earl called "I Know a House." Earl Palmer Memorial Service on YouTube I Know a House I know a house that took me in to send me out and I keep finding this house in all of the places in my life as if it were as itinerant as I My first memory of this place I call a house is of friendly fragrances the smell of evening suppers and coffee brewing, sometimes of old wooden doors that are out of fashion and sometimes the new aroma of children laughing I came to know the people of this house who took me in and who send me out because they taught me here about the owner of the house and in time I learned his name I always love best of all the main room right in the center of this house a room that seems always vast in size to me with its grand sounds solemn and joyous and the flood of colors on both sunny and cloudy days I learned the memory of a royal past because of this house and like a waterfall cataract of some mysterious river that flowed around its open door I felt the powerful surprise of hope and resolve I know this house and wherever I go I find it either settled in or precariously perched yet always the house that takes me in to send me out

For our summer season, the team is going to bring you a few interviews with people who help us process the restlessness of our present moment. Today we talk to Phil Lewis and if you don't know Phil, you need to! He is an avid outdoor enthusiast, High School Director at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, WA, Writer for the Brem Center (a non-profit out Full Seminary seeking to integrate worship, theology and the arts in the Church) and an activist. You will not want to miss this conversation. Garret and Phil talk about what it means for people of color to redeem their relationship with creation as a source of spiritual vitality, how critical theories are helpful for Jesus followers, where critical theories can hinder more than help and how contemplative spiritual practices help him attune to what the Holy Spirit is doing in the present moment. Next time you are in Seattle feel free to DM him and let him show you his favorite food spot, but here is the thing you need to pay for his meal

Steve has been an ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA) for more than 36 years, serving in a variety of church, teaching, and mission roles. Steve loves students, and he loves the church. His passion is to prepare men and women to pastor and to lead congregations toward the fulfillment of God’s call to be missional churches—churches which are biblically faithful and growing steadily in their love for God, their love for each other, and their love for Christ’s work in the world. After graduating from Whitman College with a degree in English literature, Steve went to Harvard University for a M.T.S. degree in Semitic languages and literature. While at Harvard, he experienced God’s call to full-time ministry in the church. He received a Th.M. degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1973, and was ordained and installed as “university pastor” at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle where he was involved with students and faculty for 11 years. Steve Hayner currently serves Columbia Theological Seminary as the Peachtree Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth. Dr. Hayner joined Columbia’s faculty in 2003 after a long history of experience in ministry to the church and to students.
