This is one of Rachael's favorite episodes, ever — join Paul as he tells us about Cai Emmons's new book The Bells. Paul Calandrino is a playwright, educator, and actor based in Eugene, Oregon, where Cai and he lived until she died. Since she passed, he has been curating her literary legacy with the release of this book, and he is currently collecting her blog content into book form. Cai Emmons (1951-2023) was the author of seven novels and a story collection, Vanishing. The Bells, is her final novel. She held a BA from Yale University and two MFAs, one from New York University in film and the other from the University of Oregon in fiction. Before turning to fiction, Emmons wrote plays and screenplays. Winner of a Student Academy Award, an Oregon Book Award, and the Leapfrog Global Fiction Prize, and finalist for the Narrative, The Missouri Review, and the Sarton awards, she taught at a variety of institutions, most recently in the creative writing program at the University of Oregon. She died in 2023 from Bulbar-onset ALS, a fast-progressing form of the disease that had taken her voice. The Bells, which features a protagonist with ALS, has just been released by Red Hen Press. Her final years are also the focus of an award-winning documentary Vanishing: A Love Story, directed by Sandra Luckow. ✏️ Writing in the Junkyard Online Writing Retreat! In May of 1992, 42-year-old Christine “Starrine” Byrd vanished from her home in west Tyler, Texas. What began as a missing-person case soon turned into something far darker – and more disturbing – than anyone could have imagined.Starrine was a beloved mother of four, a woman of faith whose home was always filled with music. She disappeared without a trace; the front door left open, food still cooking on the stove, pets unfed. The scene looked frozen in time, as if she had been interrupted mid-afternoon. Investigators suspected foul play almost immediately. Then came a phone call. An anonymous man claimed her body could be found at Bellwood Lake. The resulting large-scale search turned up nothing. No remains, no evidence, no answers. But Starrine wasn't the only person in Tyler to disappear under mysterious circumstances around that time. Months earlier, eight-year-old Chad Choice had been abducted from his home. His case led to ransom demands, rumors of drug debts, and ultimately to a horrifying series of revelations implicating a young man named Patrick Horn.Years later, Horn would be convicted of Chad's kidnapping and murder. Behind bars, he began talking, and investigators realized that Starrine lived just a short distance from where Chad was buried. Informants claimed Starrine “knew too much.” Some said she may have witnessed something connected to the boy's killing.Though she was never found, and no charges were filed in her disappearance, Starrine's daughters have never stopped fighting. Today, the case remains open — and so does the search for justice. If you have any information about the disappearance of Starrine Byrd, please call the Tyler Police Department at (903) 531-1000 or Tyler-Smith County Crime Stoppers at (903) 597-2833.Sources: The Tyler Morning Telegraph, The Tyler Courier-Times Telegraph, KETK News, KLTV News, Smith County District Attorney Press Statements, Patrick Horn v. 1/8 The Vanishing Museum of the Cultural Revolution — Tanya Branigan — Branigan's book Red Memory opens with the Pagoda Museum in Shantou, the sole institutional site documenting Cultural Revolution history and memory. Built by official Peng Qi'an to preserve this era, the museum unflinchingly documents the period's widespread violence, social chaos, and estimated two million deaths. Official Chinese historiography minimizes the CR as merely "setbacks" and historical aberrations. The museum site, subject to constant surveillance by state security operatives, was eventually closed to public access and systematically obscured from historical memory. 1966

In 1966, six Denver high school students went camping at Daniels Park — and stumbled into one of the strangest cases of UFO and paranormal crossover ever recorded. Known as The Campfire Creep, the group reported buzzing noises, footsteps on the roof, a tall man in a black coat who vanished before their eyes, and glowing egg-shaped craft that disabled their car as they fled. In this episode of Just Another Tin Foil Hat, Zelia Edgar dives deep into this bizarre night — exploring how it blurs the lines between UFO encounters, hauntings, and classic poltergeist phenomena. We look at the new book by Jack Bialik, see more about Lost in Time: Our Forgotten and Vanishing Knowledge here. Lost in Time: Our Forgotten and Vanishing Knowledge, reviewed An interesting premise for a book, with some interesting and thought provoking examples. Bialik's topic is the sad, unfortunate, and possibly more often than we realise, the loss of human knowledge. The burning of the library of Alexandria is of course one of the best known examples, but Bialik does a good job of describing many other lost libraries, some even in the last three decades like the Bosnian one. The narrative of the book is good, readable and thoughtful. At times though some of the examples were not much more than thumbnails, which made some chapters feel a little like a whistle stop tour through many different civilisations and cultures. The most disturbing section is arguably the one covering our recent rush into digitalisation and the inherent risks is rapidly changing technologies, especially due to the lack of backwards compatibility. While stone, papyrus and even paper have the capacity to last decades, centuries and even millennia, we already have plenty of photos that haven't even lasted from one phone upgrade to the next one. This really could be the digital dark ages that Vince Cerf highlighted. This book by Bialik is well worth a read, even if the implications and very serious. More about Lost in Time What if the knowledge we depend on today… disappeared tomorrow? Have you ever wondered how much of humanity's greatest achievements have already been lost to time? Do you suspect that ancient civilizations knew things we are only now beginning to rediscover? Do you worry that our own digital civilization might be far more fragile than we think? If so… keep reading. For thousands of years, human knowledge has risen, vanished, and - sometimes - been found again. From medical breakthroughs in ancient Egypt to astonishing feats of engineering by cultures we barely remember, history shows a repeating pattern: discovery, prosperity… and catastrophic loss. Now, with our reliance on digital systems and complex global networks, we may be closer than ever to our own "forgotten age." Drawing on over 40 years of professional experience in engineering, technology, and history - including work with the U.S. Air Force, the Department of Homeland Security, and contributions to critical technology programs> - Jack R. Bialik takes you on a journey across centuries of lost civilizations, vanishing wisdom, and the fragile threads holding our modern knowledge together. Here's a glimpse of what you'll discover inside Lost in Time: How cataract surgery was successfully performed in 2400 BC Egypt - and why we nearly lost that knowledge forever. The shocking truth about technologies invented thousands of years earlier than historians once believed. Forgotten disaster events that erased entire libraries of human understanding in a single day. The hidden risks of a fully digital society - and what history teaches us about protecting what matters. Lessons from the past that can guide business leaders, educators, and decision-makers today. How to recognize the warning signs of a coming knowledge collapse. …and much more. You might think a book like this requires deep academic expertise to follow - it doesn't. Bialik's clear, compelling style makes these stories accessible for curious readers, history lovers, business travelers, and lifelong learners alike. More about the author Jack R. Bialik's 40-year career spans from Electrical Engineering and Project Management to biblical studies, with notable contributions to organizations like the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Homeland Security. His industry-impacting paper, presented at the Motorola System Symposium 2000, stands out among his many achievements. His unique expertise led him to be invited to be a reviewer for the White House's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, marking another career highl...

If two teenage girls went missing today, would police just assume they’d run away from home? That assumption is why two Australian teenagers, Elaine Johnson and Kerry Anne Joel, have never been found. Elaine was 16, Kerry was 17, living a carefree 80s life in The Shire, south of Sydney. The girls were seen hitchhiking on the Princes Highway, but by the weekend, they were gone. No calls. No sightings. Years later, the families uncovered police oversights, lost documents, and a cold case that never should’ve gone cold. Journalist and podcast host Kate Kachor is retracing Elaine’s final days, hoping someone out there finally comes forward. When Rome's Emperor Valerian fell into Persian hands, his defeat became one of history's most grotesque legends — a tale of humiliation, torture, and a death said to come by molten gold. | #WDRadio WEEK OF NOV 11, 2025==========HOUR ONE: When it comes to receiving the death sentence, history has given us several ways to go about the execution. Hanging, firing squad, gas chamber, being stoned to death or burned at the stake… but you have to be some whole new level of “hated” by the people if your death blow comes by way of molten gold being poured down your throat. (Death By Golden Throat) *** Typically, when you hear the phrase “high speed chase”, you think of law enforcement trying to catch the bad guys who are in a getaway vehicle. Perhaps after a bank robbery, or after blowing a stop sign and simply refusing to pull over. But have you heard about the time that the police were involved in a high-speed chase up to 100-miles-per hour, trying to catch up to a flying saucer? (The 100mph UFO Chase) *** When the Black Plague arrived at their doorsteps, the villagers were forced to choose between life or certain doom. It's the tragic tale of England's Plague Village – the village of Eyam. (The Black Death Comes to Eyam) *** In the 1800s, women finding themselves “with child” but unmarried, were treated like second-class citizens or worse. And during a time when birth control was limited or even unavailable outside of the rhythm method, what was a girl to do if she found herself in such dire circumstances? Fortunately, there was a woman there ready to help – to take the baby off their hands and give it a good home. Or so everyone thought. (Minnie, The Baby Farmer) *** On frozen lakes near Manitowish Waters, a hooded figure appears to ice fishermen, silently guiding them to the best spots for a catch before vanishing into the winter air. (The Ice Fisherman Ghost)==========HOUR TWO: Ruth Snyder and Judd Gray devised a scheme to get rid of Ruth's husband – and they planned it so well that, okay… actually no. They were so inept they were caught immediately, and even the police publicly called them incompetent. (The Dumb-Bell Murder) *** For over 2,000 years across South and Southeast Asia, trained elephants served as living instruments of execution, crushing condemned prisoners with calculated brutality under the control of their handlers. (Execution By Elephant) *** Before he became a Civil War general, Congressman Dan E. Sickles' scandalous murder trial changed our legal system forever. He said outright that he had killed his wife's lover. So how did he avoid being found guilty of the crime he admitted to committing? (How A Congressman Got Away With Murder) *** In 1150, two children were found near Woolpit in England – they wore strange clothes, spoke oddly, but the most identifiable characteristic for both children was their skin was green. The children themselves were a mystery – but what happened when they grew up? Did they marry? Did they have children? Could there be decedents of the green children of Woolpit living among us today? (Great Grandkids of Green Children) *** In the summer of 1518, a mysterious dancing plague seized the French town of Strasbourg, compelling hundreds to dance without rest for months—some until they collapsed and died—in a frenzy that baffled authorities and remains unexplained to this day. (Dancing Plague)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: “Tom" and "Lena" are in a loving relationship and have a young child together. It sounds like the perfect family – except for one tiny detail about their relationship. Tom and Lena are biological brother and sister. (I Fell In Love With My Sister) *** In Norfolk, England the village of Eccles was slowly gobbled by the rising waters of the sea in the early 1600s. But even today, sometimes during a particularly heavy story, you can see St. Mary's Church mysteriously reappear… bringing with it, the dead buried in the church graveyard who cannot find rest. (The Disappearing And Reappearing Village of Eccles) *** Lory Price and his wife Ethel mysteriously disappeared from Marion, Illinois. But then, sometimes that happens when you are mixed up with the mob or may have learned something you weren't supposed to. Hollywood has no shortage of scandals and tragedies, but some of the most haunting cases involve celebrities who simply vanished without a trace, leaving behind nothing but mysterious clues and unanswered questions.IN THIS EPISODE: Showbiz is full of not just celebrities, but also of crime and murder. But even stranger are those cases where someone famous simply disappears without a trace, and without an explanation. *** North Carolina's Great Dismal Swamp is full of horror stories – but the worst might be the fact that the swamp appears to swallow people alive. (Swallowed Alive In Great Dismal Swamp) *** A weeping man called the police to tearfully apologize for murdering his victims… but that didn't stop him from continuing to kill again and again. (The Weepy Voiced Killer) *** In Hindu culture, it is believed if certain post-death rituals are not conducted on those who have passed away, the deceased's family would not prosper and there would be misfortunes aplenty. One family in Bhutan had to learn that the hard way. (The Stoning Ghost of Sombek) *** An apparent incident involving a “gigantic cigar-shaped UFO” somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean in May 1963 wasn't reported for almost 20 years, when a witness to the event finally came forward through a written letter of the incident. (The Atlantic UFO of 1963) *** In a beautiful little town in North Wales, children ran through the graveyard, searching for little men with big eyes and long ears. They were searching for strange fairy folk – the ‘brownies' of Bangor. (The Brownies of Bangor) *** Serial killer Ed Gein was caught and arrested for his crimes in November of 1957 – but that didn't mean Gein's neighbors would see the end of his influence on their lives. (Selling Ed Gein) *** Four people take a trip to France and stay at hotel that appeared too good to be true – because it was. We also explore why companies predict the toughest job market in years for the Class of 2026, Silicon Valley's renewed push for universal basic income as automation accelerates, and the rise of "polyworking" as more people juggle multiple jobs to survive economic pressure. These stories reveal the trends, tensions, and emerging signals leaders need to watch to stay future-ready.

Tara and Lee dive into a whirlwind of stories that blur the line between policy, money, and machine-made music. First, Tara unpacks Donald Trump's baffling H-1B visa remarks—contradicting his own record as the president who cracked down hardest on visa abuse. She exposes how cheap labor loopholes, corporate greed, and immigration politics intertwine to undercut American workers. Then, they pivot to the “death of the penny” and what it signals for cashless control, privacy, and government surveillance in a coming digital-only economy. Finally, the duo tackles a jaw-dropping revelation: the top country song in America was written and performed entirely by AI. With “Breaking Rust” and “Cain Walker” dominating the charts—fictional artists earning real money—Tara and Lee ask: are we witnessing the end of authenticity in American culture?
Meghan Markle is under fire after turning up to Kris Jenner's James Bond–themed birthday bash without a poppy on her dress while Harry wore his proudly on his lapel. Royal insiders are calling it “her latest act of royal revenge,” commentators are furious, GB News voices are rushing to defend the couple, and somewhere in the middle Harry is homesick and writing heartfelt Remembrance essays about England. Then the photo of Meghan mysteriously disappears from Kim Kardashian's Instagram, and critics line up to mock what is likely the final, poorly performing instalment of With Love, Meghan on Netflix.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.
Tara exposes the shocking new reality of the U.S. housing market — where the average homebuyer is now fifty-nine years old. From Realtor Magazine changing its cover to feature retirees instead of young couples, to Trump's floated “fifty-year mortgage,” this episode dives deep into how runaway federal spending, immigration pressures, and stagnant wages have shattered homeownership dreams for Gen Z and Millennials. Tara connects the dots between reckless fiscal policies, rising housing costs, and the economic future of the country — a wake-up call to what happens when America follows the same path as overextended nations abroad.

Melodee Buzzard's disappearance isn't an anomaly — it's the warning sign of a statewide collapse. Between 2019 and 2022, California's public-school rolls dropped by 270,000 students. Roughly 150,000 of them remain unaccounted for in any school, private affidavit, or relocation record. They didn't all move — many simply vanished from the data, the same way Melodee vanished from oversight. In this episode of Hidden Killers, Tony Brueski and the panel connect the dots between one missing-child case and the larger crisis of invisible minors. We'll analyze state education reports, CPS workload numbers, and how “independent study” loopholes became a hiding place for abuse and neglect. We'll also ask the uncomfortable question: If a state can lose track of 150,000 children on paper, how many are in real danger off the record? This is not fear-mongering — it's a forensic look at bureaucratic blindness and the cultural apathy that lets it continue. #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #MelodeeBuzzard #GreatVanishing #MissingKids #CaliforniaCPS #EducationCrisis #SystemFailure #TrueCrimeToday #LawAndCrime #GroupDiscussion #PostCovid #DataInvestigation #ChildSafety Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
