You Know It Is the Lord! | John 21:1-14 | Trinity Lutheran Church Have you ever had a moment when God's promises became unmistakably clear? In John 21:1-14, the disciples experience this very clarity. Initially, they don't recognize the figure on the shore—until He speaks and His promise is fulfilled. They've witnessed this before: a night of fruitless fishing, then a simple command from Jesus, and suddenly their nets overflow. "It is the Lord!" proclaims John, recognizing Jesus by His word that accomplishes exactly what He promises. Today, we hear that same powerful word, given so that "you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31). Listen and believe—it truly is the Lord! ✨ Key Takeaways: Jesus fulfills His promises in unexpected ways. Recognizing Jesus comes through hearing His Word. God's Word is powerful, creating faith and life.

From the Gospel acclamation: "A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people." A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (today's readings) As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him. But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead, “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” Following the calming of a storm at sea, Jesus and the disciples arrive at the region of Gerasenes and encounter a man possessed by demons. Living among the tombs and restrained by chains and shackles he smashed, the demon-possessed man meets Jesus at the shore. Night and day, Mark tells us, the man cried out and bruised himself with stones. Recognizing Jesus by name, the demons identifying themselves as Legion, beg Jesus not to torment them. Granting their request, Jesus sends the demons into a nearby herd of pigs, which immediately rush down a steep bank into the sea. The man returns to his right mind, and the witnesses and nearby townspeople beg the man to leave, who first attempts to go with Jesus and then travels to the Decapolis to proclaim what Jesus has done for him. The people are amazed, and word of Jesus begins to spread. Sometimes life would have us living among tombs, possessed by inner demons. If Jesus drove out Legion, he can drive out any of those who name themselves or any who dwell in us in anonymity. "Let your hearts take comfort, all who hope in the Lord." God, stay beside me this moment and throughout the day as I meditate on the power of Jesus Christ your Son to name and cast out any evil within me. Thanks be to you, Lord, for the gifts of baptism and reconciliation and the true food and true drink of the Eucharist. Jesus commanded the possessed man to do one thing. Let me open my heart in gratitude to his command and find joy in it: “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” Help me remember your compassion, Lord, as I place my trust in you. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

In this sermon, we explore the profound significance of Jesus' favorite self-title, "Son of Man," which He used more than any other in the Gospels. Rooted in Daniel's prophecy, the title reveals Jesus as the ruler of an eternal kingdom, fully God and fully man, sent to save and reign over all creation. This message challenges us to respond to Jesus as both Savior and King, reflecting on the cost of grace and embracing life in His victory. Through this lens, we discover how Christ's reign shapes not only the church today but also our personal lives. The sermon invites us to surrender fully to His lordship and live in the joy and responsibility of reconciliation with God. 5-Day Devotional Based on the Sermon: "He is the Son of Man" Day 1: Recognizing Jesus as the Eternal King Reading: Daniel 7:13-14 Reflection: Jesus, the Son of Man, fulfills Daniel's vision of a King whose dominion will never end. Spend time reflecting on how Jesus rules not just in heaven but also in your everyday life. Where do you need to acknowledge His authority more fully? Prayer: Ask Jesus to reign in every area of your life, leading you to trust His eternal plan even when the future feels uncertain. Day 2: The Cost of Grace – Jesus' Sacrifice Reading: John 3:13; Luke 9:58 Reflection: Jesus left the perfection of heaven to live among us, experiencing all the struggles of humanity. His sacrifice wasn't just a noble gesture; it was the only way to restore our broken relationship with God. Where do you see His grace at work in your life? Prayer: Thank Jesus for the immense love shown through His incarnation and the cross. Ask for a heart that responds to His grace with humility and gratitude. Day 3: Reconciliation – Living in Relationship with God Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 Reflection: God has reconciled us to Himself through Christ, not holding our sins against us. This reconciliation calls us to be ambassadors, sharing His message of peace. Reflect on relationships in your life—are there people you need to reconcile with? Prayer: Pray for the courage to seek reconciliation with others and be an agent of God's peace in your family, church, and community. Day 4: Embracing Christ as the Son of Man in Daily Life Reading: John 6:53-54 Reflection: Jesus invites us to “feed” on Him, making Him the center and sustenance of our lives. This means relying on His Word and Spirit daily. How can you deepen your relationship with Him this week? Prayer: Ask God to help you make time for prayer and Scripture, nourishing your soul with His presence and guidance. Day 5: Living in Victory through Jesus Reading: Luke 6:22; Romans 8:24 Reflection: Following Jesus may bring challenges, rejection, or hardship, but we know the end of the story—His victory is ours. With this hope, we live not in fear but in faith and joy. How can you live more confidently in His victory today? Prayer: Thank God for the hope and victory found in Christ. Pray for boldness to live out your faith, knowing that you are secure in Him.
This week, Hosea preached on Luke 24:13-53 about how to see and recognize Jesus in our Christian life and worship. The disciples looked at Jesus in front of their eyes, but couldn't recognize him. But Jesus opens their spiritual eyes, so that He would be recognized in the opening of the Scriptures, in the breaking of bread, and as the crucified Lord. Like the disciples, when our eyes are opened to recognize Christ's presence in the Bible, in Communion, and on the cross, we will truly become His witnesses.

It emphasizes the power and dynamite we receive from the Holy Spirit to fulfill our mission of kindness and love. This homily also highlights the examples of the early Christians in the Acts of the Apostles, who were bold and courageous in proclaiming Jesus despite persecution. The readings from Acts of the Apostles serve as a guide for modern Catholics on how to live and act in the world. Fr. THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL: UNDERSTANDING STEWARDSHIP AND PRIDEIn Luke 12:16-18, Jesus tells a parable of a rich man who credits himself for his wealth, planning to build larger barns for his abundant crops, highlighting his self-reliance and pride. BIBLICAL WARNINGS AGAINST PRIDE:1 Corinthians 4:7 questions what we have that we did not receive from God, critiquing the notion of boasting about personal achievements.1 Timothy 6:7-8 emphasizes contentment with what we have, reminding us that we brought nothing into the world and can take nothing out.2 Corinthians 10:17-18 instructs us to boast in the Lord, not in ourselves, for true approval comes from God. THE MISTAKE OF THE RICH MAN:Luke 12:19 illustrates the rich man's plan to enjoy his wealth alone, which God rebukes by calling him a fool for not being rich toward God, highlighting the folly of finding security in possessions.Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 reflects on the vanity of loving money, as it cannot fulfill one's desire for true abundance. REFLECTIONS ON FINANCIAL ANXIETY AND ENVY:Jesus' parable serves as a caution against pride and greed, urging us to recognize God as the source of all blessings and to use our resources to serve Him and others.C.S. Lewis describes pride as "spiritual cancer," emphasizing that pride prevents us from knowing God, as it involves looking down on others and things, missing what is above. CONCLUSION:The parable of the rich fool teaches us to be rich toward God, using our blessings to glorify Him and serve others, rather than accumulating wealth for self-satisfaction. Recognizing Jesus as the source of true life and abundance helps us avoid the spiritual pitfalls of pride and self-sufficiency.As we quoted earlier, C.S. Lewis called pride “spiritual cancer”. He goes on to say: “As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”Today's topic was drawn from our new study guide entitledRich Toward God. Do you sometimes struggle to recognize Jesus? It's a common problem. Tune in and let's talk about it!
In the dialogue between John the Baptist and Pharisees in today's Gospel, John makes a devastating comment regarding the ultra-religious Pharisees. He says, "I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie." It's an astonishing accusation that these most (externally) religious in Judaism would not be able to recognize the One whom they have been awaiting. While the Pharisees are so focused on the following of the Laws, truly they have gotten something seriously since they do not recognize the Giver of the Law when he comes to dwell among them. Would we too not recognize Jesus if he were to walk among us? Do we recognize Jesus when he comes to us in the Eucharist?
