On this month's episode The Lovely Biertrix talks to Juke Boxx from Barcelona Roller Derby. Growing up working at a roller rink, Juke has been on wheels the majority of her life, and started playing derby in 2008. In that time she has been a member of four leagues-  MadRollin Dolls, Minnesota Rollergirls, London Rollergirls and has recently transferred to Barcelona Roller Derby. In those leagues she has been heavily involved in strategy and training plans. She also has been a member of USA Roller Derby for all 3 World Cups, since its inception in 2011. Juke has travelled around the world as both an athlete and a guest coach, which has given her a well rounded perspective on the pitfalls and challenges that face many different levels of leagues. She especially enjoys problem solving, the technical side of skating and LOVES to talk derby strategy. Juke has enthusiasm and big ideas, so if you meet her she will probably talk your ear off about derby. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. Mick Swagger is a former member of the USA Roller Derby team and the founder of Team indigenous. She is originally from the Diné Indigenous community in North America and the idea for a team of indigenous women came about through social media and it's resulted in a team that took part in the Roller Derby World Cup earlier this year. Mick tells Chris Stafford that when she put out a call for women to apply for the team more than 60 women came forward of which 20 were selected and the team now comprises women from different nations from the US, Canada, South America, New Zealand and beyond. And they come from a range of different professional backgrounds from a heavy metal worker to astronaut and lawyer. The women have come from far and wide. A team indigenous is unique in its heritage and culture and has a community that reaches far beyond sport making the women unique role models among marginalised people. It's also given the women an opportunity to be among their own to learn of the families and the other nations and they also have another mission to raise awareness of the treatment of Indigenous communities. The Indigenous women who were murdered or disappeared along the "Highway of Tears" from 1969 to 2011 the fundraising contributes to missing and murdered women USA a charity based in the US. The women are also making a statement by coming together as a sports team and building a community across the nations which is giving a voice to the wider issues of indigenous people.  Team Indigenous recently took part in the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup in England, an achievement in itself and for a new team of women this is something to be especially proud of.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. Roller Derby Star Fifi Nomenon on Being Trans in Texas

Fifi Nomenon (say the name quickly) is a star of the Texas Rollergirls and team USA Roller Derby, and is one of the most prominent trans athletes in the United States. We break down roller derby, why it has proven to be more hospitable to trans athletes than other sports, and what it's like to be trans in Texas - a place where scapegoating has run rampant. In addition to Fifi, I have some Choice Words about anti-trans bigotry and the 2017 Super Bowl. Finally my Just Stand Up award goes to an icon of my sports-loving youth, NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson, and his efforts to ban tackle football for kids.Fifi Nomenon: http://fb.com/fifinomenon | http://twitter.com/fifinomenonTexas Rollergirls: http://texasrollergirls.orgTeam USA Roller Derby: http://fb.com/usarollerderbyZirin: Fight Transphobia and Move the Damn 2017 Super Bowl http://thenation.com/article/fight-transphobia-and-move-the-damn-2017-super-bowl/This NFL Hall of Fame Member Won’t Let His Grandson Play Football http://thenation.com/article/this-nfl-hall-of-fame-member-wont-let-his-grandson-play-football/—http://edgeofsportspodcast.com | http://twitter.com/edgeofsports | http://fb.com/edgeofsportspod | email us: edgeofsports@slate.com--Music: LL Cool J "Phenomenon" http://llcoolj.com | Shovels & Rope "Mary Ann & One Eyed Dan" http://shovelsandrope.com | No7ice "It's Too Late" http://soundcloud.com/no7ice
