Speaking of Higher Ed: Conversations on Teaching and Learning
Dr. Patrice Buckner Jackson, also known as Dr. PBJ, joins Speaking of Higher Ed to discuss faculty burnout, recovery, and reconnecting with purpose. She explains how burnout differs from ordinary end-of-semester exhaustion, why productivity fixes often fall short, and how faculty can recognize signs of surviving, overwhelm, and burnout. The conversation explores compassion fatigue, boundaries, guilt around rest, and how institutions can better support faculty well-being. Dr. Jackson also offers practical ways faculty can pause, recover, and reset their rhythm before the next academic year. Knoxville's Xul Beer Company first opened their taproom in 2020, and in under six years they've made a big name for themselves mostly on the back of their PB&J sour beer series. Craig had a chance to visit the taproom on PB&J Mixtape Day, and managed to catch co-founders Brad West and Seth Thacker for a quick interview. Then we sample a lineup of their most-loved beers, including a lineup of PB&J variants that lead to Ryan's atomic dream cuvée. It's a deliciously chaotic day on Big Rich, TD, and Fletch! The crew celebrates National Burrito Day in the best way possible—thanks to Sombrero Mexican Food dropping off a stack of burritos that may or may not have derailed the entire show. Then things get legendary when San Diego icon Ted Leitner stops by the studio to talk about his brand-new podcast and share some classic stories from his broadcasting career. Just when the guys think it's all about burritos, listener Debbie calls in with a crucial reminder: it's ALSO National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day… and suddenly the debate is on. Good day, Scorekeepers! It's time for another jam-packed episode of your favorite podcast, THE SCORE. This week, we're once again tackling the somewhat mystifying career of Mr. Tyler Perry. Recently Youtuber F.D. Signifier released a scathing 4-hour critique of Perry's oeuvre and we were sat for the whole thing. Highly recommend it! And with so much material to work with, naturally there were some things we agreed with, some we didn't, and some that just straight up confused us. Let's talk about it! Plus, some current events up top and, as always, a little PBJ at the end. Joe shares a funny story about a college buddy who lived by the motto “Go Ugly Early,” going after the less attractive girls while others chased the obvious beauties. Dave chimes in, showing a bar shirt with the same slogan, and the conversation shifts to college food hacks. Joe talks about hanging with bigger sorority girls and sneaking their peanut butter sandwiches, while he, Dave, and Jamie debate cheap-eats favorites—from tuna with mayo and cheese to ramen noodles and PB&J.
Joe kicks off the hour with a college story about a buddy who lived by the motto “Go Ugly Early,” going after less attractive girls while others chased the obvious beauties. The conversation expands into college food hacks, as Joe, Dave, and Jamie debate cheap eats—from sneaking PB&J sandwiches and ramen noodles to tuna with mayo and cheese. The segment then shifts to the NFL, as Mike Florio joins to discuss the Dolphins' roster moves, including the Jaylen Waddle trade, Troy Aikman's unique dual role with the team, and the alignment between new head coach Jeff Hafley and GM Jon-Eric Sullivan. Florio also weighs in on De'Von Achane's trade availability, the running back market, and whether Miami should consider a major contract extension for the 24-year-old star, while touching on league-wide implications for the Broncos and Seahawks.
If it's a Friday in March, you know it's time for a piping hot and oven fresh episode of the Between 2 Brands #podcast with your host, Bill Petrie! To kick off Ep. 58, Bill talks about how good it is to see the branded merchandise industry move away from isolationism and closer to community and why that's a key for innovation. Then he is joined by his good friend and owner of PBJ Merch Co., Rich Patterson, all the way from Canada. That's right, for this episode we are going fully international! They have a fantastic conversation about building a business north of the border, but needing to rely on partners in the USA and a really deep discussion about balancing personal and professional challenges, especially as parents age. It's an important conversation and one we all need to have more often. Don't worry, we finish up with a Van Halen “rapid fire.” HUGE thanks to our pals over at SHEPENCO for sponsoring this fine broadcast. When you boil down the essentials of so much writing, what you get is the need for vivid, original detail. In a college essay, the story comes alive when a student goes way past the generalities and gives specific examples. In an argument essay, the intricate examples and counterargument that is explained with depth makes the most impact. In any kind of research, carefully exploring the core of the ideas with the most interesting possible language will hook and hold the reader's attention. And in narrative - as we've seen, eminently transferable to other areas of writing - it's the details. I took a copywriting class once where they boiled this concept down to a sandwich. Never say someone ate a sandwich. Say it was a pastrami on rye with extra mustard and a sheaf of pickles. Say it was a PB & J positively oozing J. Say it was a double-decker smash burger with Jimmy's special sauce and extra crispy sweet potato fries. See the difference? But here's the thing. When you tell a kid they need more details, that doesn't exactly come alive for THEM. You need more details in your request for details. They need to SEE and FEEL what you mean, just like you need to see and feel the world of their writing. So today on the pod, let's dive into six strategies you can use with your students to help improve their narrative writing detail. Your students may already have some of these down, but others may be new, or areas that will help with something causing them to struggle. As with any set of writing strategies, teach what they actually need. Apply it to their current writing projects. Hollywood's Headlines kicks off with the Atlanta Hawks hosting a “Magic City” Night in honor of the famous Atlanta strip club, sparking a debate about whether the Miami Heat would ever attempt something like that. The conversation quickly spirals into food talk, as the guys compare their favorite cuts of steak and react to a study claiming that eating meat later in life may actually help you live longer. Things get even more random when Hollywood admits he's been on a PB&J kick, while Joe reveals he's been crushing bologna sandwiches lately.

In this episode, Jake Karls—co‑founder of Mid‑Day Squares—reveals how a small snack made in a Montreal condo kitchen grew into a retail powerhouse now found in more than 10,000 stores across North America. He breaks down the storytelling‑driven strategy that helped them build community before hitting shelves, the decision to manufacture their own product when no co‑packer could match their vision, and the city‑by‑city retail expansion model that allowed them to scale without losing momentum. Jake also shares how the brand navigated the global cocoa crisis, why innovation led them to launch their new PB&J product now taking off at Target, and what every CPG founder needs to understand about attention, velocity, and building real relationships with retailers. This is a raw, honest, high‑energy masterclass in modern brand building and the realities of winning in today's retail landscape.
Cinco de Lunch officially pivots away from football for the first time as Evan unveils his Top 5 Sandwiches of All Time and the studio immediately turns it into a food debate. The guys rank an Italian hero, grilled cheese, grilled chicken with roasted peppers and mozzarella, PB&J, and a turkey club, plus they argue the eternal question: does adding bacon change the name of the sandwich? It all peaks with an all time slip when “semolina” bread becomes “salmonella” bread live on air, leading to a full on correction, laughter, and a reminder of what you definitely do not want on your lunch.
A casual idea for tomorrow's Cinco turns into a full blown argument when Evan and Tiki start debating the best games ever played at old Giants Stadium. Evan plants his flag on the Jets beating the Bengals in the final game at the building, Tiki roasts him for treating a glorified preseason as history, and the whole thing spirals into condescension, yelling, and an all time “I hope Harbaugh leaves” line. Then the Cinco de Lunch-o aftermath keeps rolling: Sean gets publicly assigned the show's “L” on YouTube for the semolina vs salmonella disaster, the chat piles on, and a caller solves Evan's late night PB&J problem in two seconds by diagnosing the real culprit: refrigerated peanut butter.

Hour 3 features Chris Perkins joining to break down the Dolphins' ongoing struggles and the big decisions facing the franchise. Perkins questions whether Stephen Ross has given Mike McDaniel assurance about returning next season, critiques McDaniel's inability to develop a reliable backup, and highlights roster talent issues while debating the “Big 3” of Grier, McDaniel, and Tua. Joe and Hyde weigh in on responsibility for Tua's contract and the front office's influence, including Brandon Shore's role, stressing that Ross needs to trust his GM. The hour also includes Joe sharing humorous college dating stories before turning to Tua's regression this season, with Hyde noting he never believed Tua was the long-term solution. The conversation underscores the love for the Dolphins while acknowledging differing opinions on the team's future.

Dear Scorekeepers, we've got an announcement to make. We simply couldn't finish Season 11 of RDPR. Black people, queer people and West Indian people making clothes for us to judge? Where do we sign up? So as we close the book on our RPDR era, we hope you'll join us for this new adventure. Greetings, dear Scorekeepers! And congrats to the Rapture Class of 2025! "It's a Different World" couldn't be more apt for today's political climate as well as today's episode. As is now customary, we start off with a little rant about this week's Republican shenanigans, but this time it's tempered with a chat about some of the art-making we've been doing in our spare time to stay sane. And then, for years now, we've been wanting to talk about one of our favorite things, but haven't had the chance. Until now! Hopefully, you love Black 90s sitcoms as much as we do. From A Different World to Martin to Living Single to In Living Color and more, these shows had a profound affect on us as kids and really helped shaped how we saw ourselves and the world around us. Join us as we take a stroll down memory lane and chat about our favorite shows, characters and moments and why they just don't make 'em like they used to (0:27:25). Plus, of course, a super-sized PBJ, because God knows we could all use it (1:15:33). Let's do it to it, y'all!Hosts: Lee Bynum, Rocky Jones, Paige ReynoldsProducer: Rocky Jones--Hey hey, THE SCORE is now on social!
