An episode that hits hard and stays in bounds! In Episode 125 of The Autistic Culture Podcast, we explore the unexpected overlap between roller derby and autistic identity with guest Carina Taylor — a neurodivergent therapist and seasoned skater. From emotional regulation to alter egos, this episode dives into how the sport offers structure, expression, and community for autistic and neurodivergent individuals alike. Here's what we cover in today's episode: * In this episode, Angela chats with Carina Taylor — a primary therapist at Foundations in Asheville, North Carolina and a roller derby extraordinaire — about the unique connections between roller derby and autism.* We dive into roller derby technique and clear up some common misconceptions (no, it's not choreographed — and no, it's not all about aggression). But it does bring out some big emotions and serious intensity.* Despite its rough-and-tumble reputation, roller derby is a highly organized sport with a detailed rule set and a strong emphasis on strategy and teamwork. It's also one of the most gender-inclusive sports out there, creating space for athletes of all gender identities to participate, compete, and feel represented on the track.* Additionally, roller derby often involves adopting a persona or alter ego — a playful, empowering form of masking that allows skaters to fully step into a character and express parts of themselves that might not surface in everyday life.* Roller derby offers a powerful outlet for emotional expression, allowing skaters to channel complex feelings—like frustration, excitement, and vulnerability—into physical movement and team connection. The structure and creativity of the sport provide a safe, supportive space where emotions aren't just allowed but embraced. For many, especially neurodivergent individuals, it becomes a form of regulation, empowerment, and authentic self-expression both on and off the track.Carina Taylor's BioCarina (she/her) is a primary therapist at Foundations in Asheville, a young adult transition community located in the mountains of North Carolina. Originally from Pennsylvania, Carina completed her Bachelor's in Sociology with minors in Psychology and Social Work at Bridgewater College in Virginia and her Master's in Social Work at East Tennessee State University. As a Primary Therapist at Foundations, she provides therapy that focuses on values exploration, identity development, resilience expansion, and trauma-informed care including EMDR therapy. One of her biggest goals when working with students is to help them normalize what they are experiencing and why they are experiencing it, while moving through their experiences in a more resilient and settled state. In her free time, she enjoys being active, including roller derby!Did you enjoy this episode? We talk about all things roller derby — from the rules and strategy to the emotional intensity it brings out in skaters. We also explore how this high-energy, gender-inclusive sport offers a powerful outlet for neurodivergent and autistic individuals to express themselves, connect with community, and even embrace a bold alter ego. AT in Colorado is growing, and you can get a little bit of everything there. The Olympic Training Center brings in top-caliber athletes. Jeb Davis shares what he loves about Colorado What is your AT Story? Often-injured high school athlete and went to the physician's office for back pain where I worked one-on-one with an AT in a rehab setting Nancy Condit in Missoula, Montana. We had a GA show up to help with high school basketball, and I learned more about the traditional role of the AT. Went to New Mexico State University Worked in outpatient clinics in the southwest Went to grad school at the University of Pennsylvania Worked with women's and men's basketball at the University of New Mexico I then became the clinical coordinator at Fort Lewis College, where I worked as the clinical coordinator and program director, as well as outreach for the secondary school. What is a unique aspect of Athletic Training in your state? Orthopedic Outreach and Residencies are shaping employment for Athletic Trainers in Colorado. What is a big challenge for Athletic Trainers in Colorado? CO is a great AT state A long history of AT and a little bit of everything Secondary University Professional sports Olympic Center We have a strong residency program I feel like our ratio of ATs in ortho clinics is greater than most states Colorado was only recently granted licensure for ATs Maintaining and protecting the licensure is a big part of how we spend our resources. If you had to pick another state to live and work in which one would it be and why? Go back to Big Sky country, where I am from. You're recruiting ATs to work in Colorado…what is your sales pitch? INTERVIEW: Mary Dawson (aka Buffy) & Sophie Gibson-Pinn (aka Velociracer) on Dunedin Roller Derby learn to skate sessions by Zac Hoffman on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
NBN host Hollay Ghadery chats with author D. D. Miller about the fascinating sport of roller derby. As the Derby Nerd, Miller covered roller derby since 2009, travelling to games across Canada and the United States, including two world championships, reporting back to an ever-growing audience the details of the sport. In this entertaining and thorough book he explains roller derby to newcomers and charts the sport's rise from small groups of women looking for people to skate with over the Internet to the world presence it has become. Along the way he considers roller derby's roots in Riot Grrrl and DIY culture, and the importance of the LGBTQ community both inside and outside of the sport. Eight-wheeled Freedom: The Derby Nerd's Short History of Flat Track Roller Derby (Wolsak and Wynn, 2016) is a warm, thoughtful look at a sport that Miller understands intimately, which takes us beyond the costumes and showmanship, into the heart of what he feels may be the first truly feminist sport. About D.D. Miller D. D. Miller is originally from Nova Scotia but has lived, worked and studied all across the country. His work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies including the Malahat Review, the Fiddlehead, Eleven Eleven: Journal of Literature and Art and Dinosaur Porn. As the Derby Nerd, Miller is known around North America for his writing and commentary on roller derby, one of the world's fastest growing sports. A graduate of Mount Allison University, the University of Victoria and the University of Guelph (where he completed his MFA), Miller currently lives in Toronto where he works as a college English instructor. He also announced at both the 2011 and 2014 Roller Derby World Cups and was part of the ESPN's broadcast crew for the 2015 WFTDA Championships. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. Her collection of poetry, Rebellion Box was released by Radiant Press in 2023, and her collection of short fiction, Widow Fantasies, was released with Gordon Hill Press in fall 2024. Her debut novel, The Unraveling of Ou, is due out with Palimpsest Press in 2026, and her children's book, Being with the Birds, with Guernica Editions in 2027. Today we're preparing for Sarah's 40th birthday even though she just turned 39. We're going to give ourselves the gift of affordable healthcare for her milestone birthday (and maybe a head to toe spa situation). Susie thinks she is slowly morphing into that annoying tech bro who is trying to live forever. We discuss our fantasies of doing roller derby despite Susie's questionable roller skating training and Sarah's inability to do anything but rollerblade. We revisit the origin story of Monopoly, why the game has lost its way from the original aim, and why the woman who created it got screwed (you could say, she did not pass go and did not collect $200). Sarah explains why the color purple is an illusion and it is freaking us out. Sarah is worked up about a new podcast that claims that some nonverbal people on the autism spectrum seem to be communicating telepathically with their family members, and she bemoans the way scientific inquiry is imperfect when dealing with the more metaphysical aspects of human experience.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 50% off your first order plus free shipping forever, head to https://filtereasy.com/candy and use code CANDY.Go to https://www.hungryroot.com/braincandy and use code: braincandy to get 40% off your first box, PLUS get a free item in every box for life!Get 20% off your first order of Liquid I.V. when you go to https://www.liquidiv.com and use code CANDY at checkout.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This podcast for On the Brink with Andi Simon is about how Sue Willoughby helps women over 40 transform their lives using her approach, Equus Coaching.Sue Willoughby is on a mission to help women over 40 tackle their challenges and build better lives. Through her business, Willoughby Coaching, she uses a unique method called Equus Coaching, where clients work with horses to learn more about themselves. These sessions focus on non-verbal communication, leadership, and personal growth, helping women make big changes in their lives. Sue Willoughby's Journey to Equus Coaching has not been Easy Sue's journey hasn't been easy. She grew up with a single parent who struggled with alcoholism. This taught her to be strong and face tough situations, even when she didn't feel confident. Coming out as gay at 17 was another challenge, and by 19, she faced such deep struggles that she attempted suicide. For a while, her life felt like it was spinning out of control. Things turned around in the 1990s when Sue met her partner. They moved across the country, and Sue started to rebuild her life. She went back to school, found a new career, bought a home, and became a real estate investor. During this time, she reconnected with her love for horses, which had always been a source of comfort during tough times. Her Goal is to Guide Other Women Today, Sue uses what she's learned to guide others. Through Equus Coaching, she helps women understand themselves better and overcome what's holding them back. Horses, she says, are amazing teachers because they respond to how we act and feel, even when we don't say a word. Sue also practices what she teaches. She's done all kinds of exciting things, like being a DJ, stand-up comedian, actor, pilot, and Roller Derby referee. These experiences help her connect with her clients, showing them how stepping out of their comfort zones can lead to amazing growth. Now living near Seattle, Sue shares her life with a horse named Moose, two Dachshunds named Benny and Buddy, and a VW Bus she calls Arlo. Her story is proof that it's never too late to make a change and live the life you want. The good old days of Roller derby.
Elizabeth Holden is a writer, a physics teacher, a travel company owner, an X-Files podcast host, and an avid roller derby player. Her debut novel, Mighty Millie Novak, was released by Flux Books in 2024. She believes the ideal conditions in which to write a novel are in the dining car of a train traveling through the Alps, with a pot of tea beside you -- though she does most of her writing at her home in Wisconsin. Like Millie, Elizabeth Holden is an avid roller derby player, a blocker with Madison Roller Derby since 2015. Liz's league-mates know her as Auntie Matter; her derby name is a reference to her job teaching college physics. (And, yes, she is also an aunt. Hi, William and Hugo!) When not busy writing, playing derby, or teaching, Liz is most likely leading international trips with her company, Leaping Hound Travel. Liz also co-hosts an X-Files podcast, We Want to Believe, with her sister. Liz's tattoos are vibrant and numerous, her laugh is loud, and her heart belongs to her pet greyhounds.
