“MK Confidential” goes inside Scott Peterson's defense. His future lawyer, Mark Geragos, spends weeks analyzing the case from a cable news desk — then, Scott's mother asked to meet him, and for him to meet Scott face-to-face. Three weeks later, Geragos walks out of a courthouse as Peterson's lead defense attorney, calling him "stone cold innocent" in his opening statement.Megyn sits down with Geragos more than twenty years later to ask him about all the twists and turns of this case, including: the six eyewitnesses he promised the jury and never called, the boat demonstration the judge kept out of evidence, a detective who admits to striking a line from his own report, and the tapes of Scott at Laci's vigil that his own co-counsel says will sink the case.Inside the courtroom, the trial turns on dueling experts, a dismissed juror who says he would have voted to acquit, and an online shopping query that upends the prosecution's own timeline. “MK Confidential” follows a lead that the jury never fully hears. In the late morning of December 24, 2002, a neighbor spots three men and a van across the street from the Petersons, that don't look like they belong there. Laci Peterson is last seen twenty minutes later. Megyn tracks down the witnesses one by one: a mailman who says the Petersons' gate was open and their dog, which barks at him every single day, stays silent. Six people who say they saw a pregnant woman walking a golden retriever that same morning, after Scott had already left for the marina. Plus, a hypnotized witness, a burglary across the street, a van found burned nearby, and interview tapes marked for destruction before the trial even begins. None of it proves that Laci was around that morning. But it raises the question about what the jury was ever allowed to consider. Meanwhile, her husband Scott Peterson changes his appearance and buys a car in his mother's name — for cash. He has no idea he'll soon be in handcuffs. This is Episode 3 of the Laci Peterson story. “MK Confidential” retraces what happened that Christmas Eve in 2002. Four police officers walk into a quiet Modesto home, drapes drawn, a Christmas tree surrounded by presents, and a nursery already stocked and awaiting a new baby. The woman who lives there is eight months pregnant, and missing. Her husband says he had gone fishing roughly ninety miles away. Megyn walks through that day, twice. First, the way Scott Peterson tells it to police, hour by hour, detail by detail. And second, the way investigators come to believe that day actually happened, using a mopped floor, a dog left on its leash, a stain on a comforter, and a reference to a cooking show that don't add up with Scott's timeline. Detectives end up with a list that pushes them toward a dark theory of how — they believe — Scott killed his wife Laci, got rid of her body, and tried to cover it up. “MK Confidential” returns right in the thick of a new case: New Year's Eve, 2002. A young mother gets a phone call from her new boyfriend, who's celebrating at the Eiffel Tower, on the other side of the world. She knows he is not in Paris, his very pregnant wife is missing, and the man at the end of the line is the chief suspect. Her name is Amber Frey, and she is recording his every word. Megyn Kelly traces Scott and Amber's relationship to November 2022, when Scott charms a colleague at a work conference, and is set up on a blind date. Scott tells Amber he is single, and soon charms her, as well. Four weeks later, Laci Peterson vanishes. Within a week, Amber learns the truth about Scott, and goes to the police. Amber agrees to record her phone calls with Scott, pretending to believe his stories about world travel as he calls her from the vigil for his missing wife. The conversations become invaluable as the days tick by, and Laci's trail grows cold. By the time Laci's body washes up on the shore of the San Francisco Bay, Scott Peterson has spent hours speaking into a microphone, as though nothing was wrong in his world. Laci is joined by the hilarious Jay Jurden in this extra long episode exploring the heist of a Nicolas Cage film from a flash drive someone left on a desk. Throughout Cage's (née Coppola) storied career, he's starred in some of the greatest movies of all time (Adaptation), and he's led some of the worst (see streaming titles). But no one predicted an entire film could be stolen. In Part Two of Scott Peterson Revisited, Esther is joined by her sister Yolanda to take a closer look at the claims now being made on behalf of convicted murderer Scott Peterson. In 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project announced that it was investigating Peterson's claims of actual innocence. The following year, his attorneys filed a habeas corpus petition arguing that new evidence and scientific analysis undermined key elements of the prosecution's case. A judge rejected those claims in April 2026, but the LA Innocence Project has said it plans to appeal. Now Esther and Yolanda reopen the case for themselves.Together, they examine the major arguments being presented as evidence of Peterson's innocence: the burglary across the street from the Peterson home, witnesses who claimed they saw Laci walking her dog after Scott left that morning, new theories about where Laci and Conner entered San Francisco Bay, evidence suggesting Laci may have known about Scott's fishing boat, and questions surrounding when Conner died. They also revisit allegations that investigators developed tunnel vision and ignored evidence that didn't fit their theory of the crime. What actually caused detectives to focus their attention on Scott? Were other leads adequately investigated? And does the so-called “new evidence” meaningfully change the circumstantial case that led a jury to convict him?More than two decades after Laci and Conner Peterson were murdered, Esther and Yolanda separate what's new from what has been argued before, challenge each other's assumptions, and ask the question at the heart of Scott Peterson's latest bid for freedom:Is there truly new evidence of innocence — or simply a new way of presenting an old defense?Content warningThis episode discusses the murder of a pregnant woman and the death of an unborn child.Links to our original episodes:This episode revisits research originally presented in Episodes 71 and 72 of Once Upon a Crime in 2017, along with subsequent court rulings and the claims presented by the Los Angeles Innocence Project in Scott Peterson: The New Evidence.https://www.truecrimepodcast.com/s2-ep71-the-12-crimes-of-christmas-laci-peterson-part-1/https://www.truecrimepodcast.com/s2-ep72-the-12-crimes-of-christmas-laci-peterson-part-2/Other resources: People Magazine article (with photos of van, “Laci note” with handwriting comparison, etc.) https://people.com/pieces-forensic-evidence-could-lead-scott-peterson-freedom-exclusive-12014816?hid=bc2984855ed727914fef22dff40e20764d844358&did=24648672-20260713&utm_source=ppl&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ppl-true-crime_newsletter&utm_content=071326&lctg=bc2984855ed727914fef22dff40e20764d844358&lr_input=f39d77450fcf063cdc7d94fda7ecdf5efd39306fc49121111e7af41f018cc829&campaign=18955543 For Laci: A Mother's Story of Love, Loss, and Justice, Sharon Rocha, Crown Publishers, 2006. In this bonus episode of Scott Peterson Revisited, we look beyond the evidence to examine the man at the center of the case. Was Scott Peterson capable of murdering his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner? We explore Scott's family history, childhood, relationships, repeated infidelities, and carefully cultivated image as the family's “Golden Boy” and “Mr. Perfect.” We also consider the patterns of deception and compartmentalization that emerged throughout his life and ask whether they offer clues to how he could commit such a devastating crime—and continue to deny responsibility more than two decades later.Unmasking Scott Peterson examines the man behind the carefully constructed image and asks: What happens when maintaining the mask becomes more important than confronting reality?Content warningThis episode discusses the murder of a pregnant woman and the death of an unborn child.Sources and further listeningInside the Mind of Scott Peterson, Keigh Ablow, M.D., St. Martin's Press, 2005.Till Death Do Us Part: Love, Marriage, and the Mind of the Killer Spouse, Dr. Robi Ludwig and Matt Birkbeck, Atria Books, 2006.When the Husband is the Suspect, F. Twenty-three years after the murders of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, the case against Scott Peterson is once again under scrutiny. In January 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project announced that it was representing Peterson and investigating his claims of actual innocence. Since then, his attorneys have filed new challenges to his conviction, arguing that previously overlooked evidence and new scientific analysis undermine the prosecution's case.In July 2026, A&E aired the two-part documentary Scott Peterson: The New Evidence, produced by the Los Angeles Innocence Project, bringing many of these claims back into the national conversation. In Part One of this two-part series, we'll revisit the case from the beginning and examine the evidence that originally led investigators to focus on Scott Peterson. We review the timeline surrounding Laci's disappearance on Christmas Eve 2002, Scott's secret relationship with Amber Frey, the investigation that followed, and the discovery of Laci and Conner's remains months later near the area where Scott said he had been fishing. We'll also look at the legal history of the case after Scott's conviction, including the California Supreme Court's decision to overturn his death sentence, his resentencing to life without parole, and the more recent efforts by the Los Angeles Innocence Project to reopen the case.Content warningThis episode discusses the murder of a pregnant woman and the death of an unborn child.Sources and further listeningThis episode revisits research originally presented in Episodes 71 and 72 of Once Upon a Crime in 2017, along with subsequent court rulings and the claims presented by the Los Angeles Innocence Project in Scott Peterson: The New Evidence.Links to our original episodes: https://www.truecrimepodcast.com/s2-ep71-the-12-crimes-of-christmas-laci-peterson-part-1/https://www.truecrimepodcast.com/s2-ep72-the-12-crimes-of-christmas-laci-peterson-part-2/Coming nextIn Part 2, Esther and her sister, Yolanda, evaluate the new innocence claims one by one and discuss whether any of them materially change the evidence against Scott Peterson.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We said The Prestige is the "most" Christopher Nolan movie, and that Inception is his most autobiographical... but it turns out we were wrong, because both apply to Interstellar. It's a movie where a character literally says, "I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of time." It's a movie about a man who desperately wants to return home to his children, except that he wants even more to go do some cool stuff in outer space. The movie's working title was Flora's Letter, referring to Nolan's real-life 11-year-old daughter Flora, the inspiration for the character of Murph. And it's probably Nolan's best movie. Laci and Matt spend more than three hours celebrating this masterpiece, and talk a lot about whether you should even care if the human race got resurrected via a tube of sperm on another planet hundreds of years in the future. More than twenty years after Laci Peterson's murder captivated the nation, one of America's most infamous true crime cases is back in the spotlight. In this upcoming special two-part series, Once Upon a Crime host Esther Ludlow revisits the case with fan-favorite co-host Yolanda, taking a fresh look at the investigation, the evidence, and the questions that continue to divide the public. Originally covered by the podcast in 2016, this updated series examines what's changed, and why so many people are debating Scott Peterson's guilt once again. The disappearance of eight-months-pregnant Laci Peterson on Christmas Eve 2002 sparked a media frenzy unlike anything seen before. As investigators uncovered Scott Peterson's affair with Amber Frey and his shocking lies about his marriage, public opinion quickly turned. Months later, the bodies of Laci and her unborn son, Conner, were discovered along the shores of the San Francisco Bay, leading to Scott's arrest, conviction, and death sentence. But the story didn't end there. With new legal challenges from Scott Peterson's defense team, renewed attention from the Los Angeles Innocence Project, and recent documentaries reigniting debate, the case has become the subject of fresh scrutiny. Could key evidence have been misunderstood? Were important leads overlooked? When The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012, expectations were sky high. After all, Christopher Nolan had shattered all box office records and blown critics away with The Dark Knight… what would he be doing now to dazzle audiences everywhere? Maybe it's inevitable that the reception would be mixed. For the first time in his career, a Nolan movie was given generally negative reviews. And while it ultimately made more money worldwide than The Dark Knight did, it didn't become the biggest movie of all time. Earlier that year, in fact, The Avengers had pulled that off, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reign had officially begun. Nolan said the only reason he would ever consider making a sequel to The Dark Knight was if he came up with a story that was so good it justified its own existence. So… does The Dark Knight Rises do that? Laci thinks so; Matt doesn't. In this episode, 1-Week Rental takes you behind the scenes of The Dark Knight Rises to give you the story of how Nolan developed this idea along with his collaborator David Goyer and his brother Jonah. Then, how Bane was selected as the villain, and how world events like Occupy Wall Street gave the film a fortuitous sense of timing. But is Nolan giving himself too much credit by saying Bane foreshadowed Donald Trump? What exactly is Nolan saying in this movie, anyway? And is he trying to say one thing but accidentally saying something else, instead? Then, Laci and Matt review The Dark Knight Rises. Is Bane ultimately a letdown? Would the Joker have made more sense carrying out Bane's exact plan? Anne Hathaway is excellent as Selina Kyle, but does her character make sense? And is Marion Cotillard as "Miranda Tate" the least developed of all of Nolan's female characters? All this and more in a supersized episode as the podcast concludes its coverage of Nolan's trilogy of Batman films. In light of the recent A&E documentary about "new" evidence in the Scott Peterson case, we wanted to share our 2018 episode about the murder of his wife, Laci, and son, Connor. Even though this doc promises new findings, not much has changed from this recording aside from better recording equipment. On Christmas Eve of 2002, Scott Peterson left his pregnant wife, Laci, at home to go on a fishing trip. Scott returned home later that day to find his wife gone with no indication of where she may have gone. Police found no evidence of foul play at the house, but clues quickly emerged to call Scott's alibi into question. Did Scott Peterson murder his wife? Or is he, too, a victim in this scenario? --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Scott Peterson New Evidence, a new documentary claims it proves he's innocent. So you're going to hear the evidence that never made it into that story, the interview police did with Scott the day Laci went missing. You'll hear him agree to a polygraph in the same breath he can't explain the towels in the washing machine. You'll hear him push the idea Laci was a neat freak, and you'll hear why Scott saying Laci will be found is a real problem for him. Watch it back with this analysis and decide for yourself whether you're hearing desperate concern or something else entirely. This documentary has reopened the case in the public's mind. Movies are dreams, and directors are like the ultimate dreamweavers, if you think about it. Christopher Nolan certainly thinks so, and in his most autobiographical movie, he has Leonardo DiCaprio play man named Dom Cobb (come on, that's not a real name) who is dressed and styled to look a lot like Christopher Nolan, and he must assemble a team of creatives to help a billionaire in his feud with another billionaire. But actually, it's a movie about uncertainty. No one ever really knows whether they're in a dream, or in the Matrix, or being controlled by a demon. And when you understand that the movie is actually about giving you the experience of living with uncertainty, a lot clicks into place. Or at least it did for Matt. Laci might need to watch Inception a few more times. Before the movie discussion of Inception, Laci and Matt take you behind the scenes, giving a look at the evolution of Inception from Nolan's days as a student at uni all the way to the final version that made nearly a billion dollars at the box office. Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, an event that poses formidable logistical challenges. To put it in terms that will be familiar to many Americans, it is the equivalent of seven Super Bowls happening every day, in one of the world's biggest urban economies. That means huge demands on the city's transport and energy systems. But it also creates a rare opportunity to use the games as a catalyst to accelerate investment that could leave the city cleaner, more resilient and better connected long after the closing ceremony. In this episode, host Ed Crooks talks to Matt Petersen, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, or LACI. Matt explains how LACI has been using the run-up to the Games as a convening point for public and private sector action. The focus has been on transportation electrification, clean energy deployment and building infrastructure that can help Los Angeles cope with an influx of visitors while improving the quality of life for residents in the long term.Transport is key. Los Angeles is sometimes described as the car capital of the world, and transport will be the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the Games. EV sales and charging infrastructure are growing fast. Even so, LACI's modelling suggests that Los Angeles still needs more people using buses and rail, as well as better first-mile and last-mile options, from e-bike share to EV car-share schemes, if it wants to hit its climate targets. The conversation also explores the less visible systems that support electrification and emissions reductions for transport. Matt points to the electrification of freight, the build-out of charging depots, battery-backed fast charging, and experiments with flexible grid connections that can bring new infrastructure online faster. Those developments are central to whether Los Angeles can make room for more EVs and rising power demand without waiting years for grid upgrades.Too often, host cities for the Olympics promise transformative benefits that never fully materialise. Matt's case is that Los Angeles has a better shot than most, partly because it is not building a wave of new permanent venues, and partly because the most important investments are in systems the city needs anyway: electric buses, cleaner freight, charging networks, transit improvements, shade for riders in extreme heat, and cleaner air in communities that have long borne the brunt of pollution. Can a deadline like LA 2028 accelerate progress on some of the hardest problems in urban decarbonization? For Matt, the real prize is not a few weeks of smooth operations during the Games, but a lasting legacy of economic opportunity and lower emissions.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Few movies have penetrated the general pop culture landscape like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. And few characters have resonated the way the Joker, as brought to life by Heath Ledger, did when Nolan's movie came out in the summer of 2008 and became the biggest movie of all time. For their 200th episode, Matt and Laci dive deep—and I mean deep—into The Dark Knight. And in a surprise that could have been conceived by the Joker himself, it turns out Laci loves this movie. Matt, meanwhile, continues to feel extremely mixed about all three of Nolan's Batman movies—there's so much to love, and so much more to be confused and baffled by. For the history segment, the podcast goes behind the scenes to talk about the casting of Heath Ledger and his process for becoming the Joker. Ledger famously isolated himself in a hotel room for a month, journaling his weird thoughts to turn into a version of the Crown Prince of Crime we'd never seen before. We also talk about the history of the Joker as a character, going all the way back to the 1940s. What exactly is it about the Joker that appeals to so many people? And, even putting aside the tragic circumstances behind Ledger's performance, what about the Nolan Joker resonated with so many people? Then, we talk for two hours about the movie itself, celebrating what we love, rubbing our temples about what we hate, and ultimately trying to figure out what exactly Bruce Wayne believes. How has he become so enchanted by a tough-on-crime prosecutor? Isn't Harvey Dent just Rudy Giuliani, but handsome? And the Joker's philosophy was extremely appealing to people, but does it actually make sense? We spend a lot of time unpacking it, and theorizing about where the Joker would have gone in a sequel, and if he would have done some maturing in between movies. If we have a contrarian take on The Dark Knight, it is this: The Joker isn't a reaction to Batman, he's a reaction to Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne rules the world of this movie so insivisbly that he poisons everything without anyone noticing. Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son Conner. He had an affair. He lied to investigators. The bodies washed ashore near where he said he went fishing. And his sister-in-law Janey Peterson has spent more than twenty years saying: the wrong person is in prison.Janey didn't just feel it. She built the argument. She pointed to a burglary across the street, ignored leads, and investigative failures. In 2024, the LA Innocence Project took the case. A judge authorized DNA testing. Scott's defense attorney went on the record: “I would bet my life on it.”This episode explores what separates organized family advocacy from blind denial — and whether twenty years of persistence is proof of love, delusion, or something the legal system is just now catching up to.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
For more than twenty years, Janey Peterson has been saying her brother-in-law Scott did not kill Laci. She hasn't wavered. She hasn't changed the core argument. She's pointed to the same uninvestigated burglary across the street, the same witness sightings, the same evidentiary gaps — and in 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project agreed there was enough substance to take the case on.Scott Peterson's conviction was built on circumstantial evidence: no weapon, no cause of death established at trial, no crime scene. The California Supreme Court already overturned his death sentence over juror misconduct. And his defense attorney has said publicly that he'd bet his life Scott is innocent. This episode traces a family's twenty-year fight and the question it forces: is this loyalty, denial, or something the rest of us haven't caught up to yet?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The question at the center of the Reiner trust litigation is not whether Nick Reiner should receive his parents' money. It is whether the legal mechanism designed to prevent exactly that — California's slayer statute — can reach money the trust itself reportedly classified as due before anyone was killed. The 136-page probate petition filed on Nick Reiner's behalf argues that half of his trust distribution came due on September 14th, 2023, his thirtieth birthday, in a payout the trust describes as “mandatory and unconditional.” Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their Brentwood home twenty-seven months later. Nick has pleaded not guilty to both murder counts.Defense attorney and former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis examines the slayer statute's actual mechanics against this timeline. Under California's probate code, a court can apply the statute on a preponderance-of-the-evidence standard — a civil threshold that does not require a criminal conviction. That standard stripped Scott Peterson of his claim to Laci's life insurance before his murder trial concluded. But the statute is built to prevent a killer from gaining through the killing. If the age-thirty distribution was already owed before the deaths, the legal question shifts: can a statute designed to block profit from a crime reach an obligation that predated the crime?Faddis addresses the procedural posture — an unopposed petition reportedly eligible for approval without a hearing — the trustee transition from Paul Kanin to Jodi Montgomery, the frozen family trusts, and whether Jake and Romy Reiner have standing to intervene. He also covers the Murdaugh retrial's newly appointed judge and the significance of her reported professional history with defense counsel.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
