Matt Pais says he was lucky enough to turn his passion for pop culture into his dream job. As the movie critic and music editor at the Chicago Tribune's RedEye for 11 years, he had his finger on the pulse of the entertainment world. He then decided he'd had enough and left. But he soon found his calling as an author, writing three books, including his latest -Talk ‘90s with Me. Matt shares with Jeanne how he knew it was time to leave RedEye; why he came to love being an interviewer; why he's not afraid to share his opinions; what he credits for his success; how he approaches each new project and where his ideas come from; and why he says, “the quality of the answers is often very much proportional to the quality of the questions.” About Matt Matt Pais spent 11 years as the movie critic and music editor for the Chicago Tribune's RedEye, reviewing more than 2,000 movies and interviewing Will Ferrell, Brie Larson, LeBron James, Margot Robbie, Harrison Ford and hundreds more celebrities. His latest book is “Talk ‘90s with Me: 23 Unpredictable Conversations with Stars of an Unforgettable Decade.” In 2020, he published "Zack Morris Lied 329 Times! Reassessing every ridiculous episode of 'Saved by the Bell' ... with stats," promoting the book on Mark-Paul Gosselaar's podcast "Zack to the Future" and much more. He released his debut collection of fiction, "This Won't Take Long: 100 Very Short Stories of Dangerous Relationships, Impaired Presidents, Frustrating Jobs and More," in 2019. He lives in Chicago with his wife and sons.Twitter: @mattpaisInstagram: @mattpaisTikTok: @mattpaisWebsite: mattpais.com

Very Short Stories : A Microfiction Special With Charlotte O'FarrellVery short stories and microfiction are terms for tiny pieces of writing that can tell an entire tale in a small number of words. On twitter the hashtag #VSS365 is used to signify these stories told in a single tweet. A skilled proponent of VSS is British writer Charlotte O'Farrell who joins us on the podcast today. We have worked with Charlotte to turn some of her stories in Alt Stories episodes for the Listen Rinse Repeat podcast which is promoting handwashing during the Covid 19 crisis by putting out tiny episodes timed to ensure a good handwash (20 - 40 seconds) and to keep listeners entertained while they clean. Charlotte talks about the VSS phenomenon and why she loves it and provides some tips for writers wishing to have a go. We continue our series through the Gospel of Mark, Very Short Stories, this week. Jesus calls the disciples, and there is a great deal for us to learn about Jesus in this scene. Jesus chooses ordinary men to do extraordinary things. He is still in the business of doing that today.
We return to our series, Very Short Stories, this week as we take a look at Mark 3:7-12. Ministry for Jesus has begun to change at this point in the gospel of Mark, and it had a great deal to do with the fact that people were telling each other about what Jesus was doing. Pastor Jeff challenges us to be more bold with the way that we talk about what Jesus is doing in our lives.
This morning we continue our series, Very Short Stories, through the Gospel of Mark. At the beginning of chapter three we see the hard turn in the way the Pharisees act toward Jesus. In this, Pastor Jeff points out the fact to us that religion is at odds with the love of people that Jesus brings into the world. As followers of Christ, we are called to love God and love people.
