Today we look at our own initial teacher education (ITE) provision here at Cardiff Met, and question how effective the concept of Research and Enquiry has been for our student teachers. Working in a policy environment where teachers are expected to be capable of creating and consuming knowledge about teaching, and bringing to to bear on their own contexts, we provide time and space for our student teachers to learn how to do that. The idea is that this will make them into better teachers - but how successful has this new idea been and what does our idea look like in reality, on the ground? Emma and Tom are joined by fellow researcher Sioned Dafydd to discuss what we found when we carried out some research that was close to home, and found out some interesting things about how things are going on!———————————Recorded in studio D0.12 at Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cyncoed Campus on 23rd July 2025

John talks with Professor Dafydd Fell of SOAS University about "The Twilight Years of Taiwan's Sugar Railways", his new book co-written with Wang Xiang, a researcher who has spent years documenting the remains and memories of this once vast railway network. Fell's own fascination with the sugar railways dates back to the 1990s when he was living in Taiwan. John and Dafydd explore how sugar helped build modern Taiwan, how the narrow-gauge railways moved far more than just sugar cane, and how the network had a Cold War strategic purpose. The episode is full of nuggets, from mystery Belgian locomotives to propaganda train tours.

Their debut, A Balloon Called Moaning, released in 2009, introduced the band's signature sound with soaring hooks grounded by a robust backbone of driving bass and drums. They quickly followed this with The Big Roar in 2011, which garnered critical acclaim for its raw intensity and infectious energy, spearheaded by the single “Whirring.” Subsequent albums, including Wolf's Law and Hitch, further explored sonic experimentation, reflecting the band's ability to balance intricate guitar work with introspective lyricism. Their ever-evolving approach and boundary-pushing style keep listeners guessing, ensuring each new release feels like an exciting chapter in a compelling musical journey. The Joy Formidable consistently pushes creative boundaries, proving that alternative rock still has much to offer. With an unwavering commitment to reinvention, they continue captivating fans and making their mark. Rydian and Ritzy recently stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat about all of this… and more.
