"Pod Save America" co-host Dan Pfeiffer ate approximately 520 meals inside the White House when he worked 24/7 as President Barack Obama's Senior Advisor. What was the White House menu like? We will explore! Spoiler alert: the butter is molded into the shape of the Great Seal of the United States, and senior White House staff are eating PB&J for lunch. On this week's episode of YLM, we take a deep dive into dim sum with Clarissa Wei, a Hong Kong based food writer and senior reporter for Goldthread. She explains why dim sum carts are going out of vogue and dumpling-obessed Rachel confesses that the carts give her anxiety. Plus, the TV show Dan watches to decompress when news and politics get him down. Pick up Dan's new book, "Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter and Trump." So here’s the timeline: Two days ago, I spoke with Dan Pfeiffer. As you surely know, he’s President Obama's former communications director and senior advisor and co-host of a podcast you might have heard of: Pod Save America. Then yesterday, Dan’s new book -- Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump – debuts at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. Co-incidence? I’ll let you decide. All I can do is accurately portray the facts. The other thing I can do: Tell you that the book is a terrific read, and the conversation was even better. He’s got a great sense of humor. That comes out in the book, too.We also discussed the serious side of politics today: I asked Dan about Democratic messaging for the midterms and beyond – what should their message be and can they possible overcome all of the noise? As well: Who’s the elected Democrat who can best lead that narrative? We also discussed the ways in which he feels the Barack Obama’s election helped lead to Donald Trump.

Former White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer, now the co-host of the popular liberal podcast Pod Save America, talks with Recode’s Peter Kafka about his new book, “Yes We (Still) Can: Politics in the Age of Obama, Twitter, and Trump.” Pfeiffer outlines the ways in which the political media landscape has been profoundly warped and upended since he went to work for Barack Obama in 2009, arguing that today “the press” is such a broad term that it has lost all meaning. He warns his fellow Democrats that the thing they should be most scared of is how successfully the Republicans have tapped into tools like Facebook and Twitter to develop a “media advantage” built on outrage. Pfeiffer also talks about why he decided to write a book after initially rejecting the idea, and why the White House press briefings delivered by Sarah Huckabee Sanders are “always pointless.” Learn more about your ad choices.
