Jen Psaki explains that while Trump will offer his own version of how the country is doing tomorrow in his address to a joint session of Congress, it's important to trust what you've been seeing with your own eyes. She is joined by Dan Pfeiffer and Ben Rhodes to preview what to expect from Trump's speech as he continues to cozy up to Russia and gut the federal government. Next, Jen is joined by Chrystia Freeland, who's in the running to be the next liberal leader and Prime Minister of Canada, to discuss her plans to push back against Trump's tariffs. Then, Jen is joined by Representative Ilhan Omar to discuss why she and other Democrats are bringing fired federal workers as their guests to tomorrow's joint session to highlight the devastating impact of Trump's mass firings. Later, Jen brings out the receipts to show how DOGE is actually creating more problems than it's solving. Finally, Jen is joined by Stephanie Ruhle to discuss Trump's plans to build a U.S. crypto reserve and how his allies stand to benefit from this. John is joined by Pod Save America cohost, Message Box author, and former top Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer to discuss Donald Trump's flood-the-zone transition strategy and the Democratic Party's future. Pfeiffer argues that the Biden administration's failure to address the mystery drone story is part of a larger abdication that has let Trump present himself as if he's been president since Election Day; that Trump's self-evident intent to turn his second term into a pay-for-play wet dream for plutocrats offers Democrats a chance to seize the mantle of reform and regain their populist mojo; and that Resistance 2.0 can only succeed to the extent it avoids focusing excessively on Trump. Pfeiffer also conducts a kind of autopsy on his own 2024 election post-mortem with the high command of Kamala Harris's campaign. In today's episode we make a prediction: That Vice President Kamala Harris will win Michigan in 2024 and that Elissa Slotkin will win the U.S. Senate race, too. We might be wrong — but this is not just based on thin air. We take our experience, the data we do have, and put it all together to analyze things how they stand. We think, from a lens being in Metro Detroit and Michigan, and respectfully, that some in the media like Steve Kornacki, Harry Enten, Dan Pfeiffer, and others may have missed a key indicator when trying to analyze this race. Steve Friess has been a freelance journalist for the New York Times, Newsweek, Politico and many others. But this isn't his first rodeo. He was the guy who first reported the contentious butterfly ballot story in 2000, for instance. Jer has been talking about local politics for years and is a regular attendee of policy conferences. He did the final interview of Former U.S. Senator Carl Levin before his death for HOUR Magazine, and has had conversations on the show with numerous local officeholders over the years. Fearless local media need local support to survive. Join our Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/DailyDetroit Also, our Studio Open House is this Saturday! Listeners asked that we do a weekend event during the day from time to time as opposed to our evening Happy Hours. Come by, have coffee and snacks, and let's talk all things Detroit and Metro Detroit! Please RSVP so we can have enough coffee and food on hand. Kamala Harris's lead pollster, David Binder, sits down with Dan Pfeiffer to explain how the the campaign is looking at undecided voters, Harris's gains with Republican women, and why Gen Z men are in the spotlight. Trump is winning the presidential race according to some polls. But others say Harris is ahead. What's the point of following the polls if they contradict each other and, at times, seem outright broken? On this week's “How We Got Here,” Max and Erin talk with Crooked's Dan Pfeiffer to explain how Trump, the pandemic, iPhones and more messed with the reliability of presidential election polls.
Guests: Stuart Stevens, Alexi McCammond, Dan Pfeiffer, Claire McCaskill, Rachel Maddow, Rick HasenKamala Harris forces the truth onto Trump TV as Donald Trump underscores his fascist threat. Tonight: the brutal day of campaigning with just 20 days to go. Then, is the plain spoken Harris campaign working in battleground states? And just when you thought the Stormy Daniels saga was over, a special report from Rachel Maddow. Want more of Chris? Download and subscribe to his podcast, “Why Is This Happening? Kamala's first month as a presidential candidate before the Democratic convention has gone exceedingly well—she's been controlling the narrative, infuriating people like Ben Shapiro, and Trump can't get her pretty face out of his head. Lawmakers continue to weigh in on the fate of President Biden's re-election campaign. Vermont's Peter Welch on Wednesday became the first Democratic senator to call on Biden to step aside. However, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on MSNBC that her fellow Democratic lawmakers should “hold off” on publicly debating the issue until after this week. Meanwhile, actor George Clooney penned a New York Times op-ed to describe a recent fundraiser he co-hosted for Biden and said the president was, “the same man we all witnessed at the debate.” Amid all the will-he-or-won't-he chatter, what do voters think about Biden? Friend of the pod Dan Pfeiffer breaks down some of the recent polls in excerpts from the latest episode of, “Pollercoaster.”And in headlines: Two Senate Democrats asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for possible tax and ethics violations, testimony began in the involuntary manslaughter trial of actor Alec Baldwin, and Virginia's Glenn Youngkin became the latest governor to call for restrictions on cell phone use in K-12 schools.Show Notes:“Pollercoaster” – https://crooked.com/podcast-series/pollercoaster/What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Civil rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill joins Jen to discuss Alito's "alarming" comments and why they call the Supreme Court's impartiality even further into question. Later, Jen explains why Trump's revenge rhetoric is just cover for his long-held plans to remake the justice system and the executive branch. Governor Josh Shapiro joins the show to reflect on Trump's plan to indict his political rivals, the fallout from Trump's guilty verdict and the Supreme Court's credibility crisis, among other things. Guilty, guilty, guilty. A Manhattan jury on Thursday found former President Donald Trump guilty on all 34 felony charges in his criminal hush-money trial. Trump was accused of falsifying business records in a scheme to cover up payments he made to the adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. The verdict makes Trump the first U.S. president to be tried and convicted of felony crimes. Diana Florence, a former federal prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, explains what's next for Trump now that he's a convicted felon. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki knows it's the follow-up questions that can be the most difficult to handle. When she was asked “Why do wars start?” by one of her children, she carefully explained and then got a follow up: “Have you ever seen a unicorn?” Not many White House press secretaries capture the nation's interest the way Jen Psaki did. Refreshingly candid and clear, Psaki quickly became known for her ability to break through the noise and successfully deliver her message. Since leaving the White House, Psaki's star has continued to rise. She launched a highly rated show on MSNBC and was so successful that in just six months she was given an additional primetime Monday slot, ahead of Rachel Maddow. Psaki comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to discuss the issues raised in her new book Say More. In it, Psaki explains her straightforward approach to communication, walking people through difficult conversations as well as moments where humor saves the day—whether it is with preschoolers, partners or presidents. She addresses the best ways to give and receive feedback, how to connect with your audience, how to listen actively, and much more. She'll be in conversation with another veteran of the high-stakes world of White House communications, President Obama's White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer. Donald Trump leads President Biden in five of the six battleground states, according to two new polls released by the New York Times. These polls come at a time when Biden is struggling to win the support of young voters. But while polls are an essential snapshot of the country, that snapshot is fairly narrow. So to discuss what these numbers do and do not tell us, we spoke with Dan Pfeiffer, a co-host of Pod Save America and the host of Pollercoaster. And in headlines: Michael Cohen takes the stand in Trump's hush money trial, three states hold primaries, and Louisiana could be the first state in the country to categorize abortion pills as controlled, dangerous substances. SERIES 2 EPISODE 172: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Robert F. Kennedy Junior who may turn out to be the spoiler who throws the election to Trump says under oath that his cognitive problems and short term and longer term memory loss from a worm that ate his brain and then died. On the other OTHER hand, too early to tell if it's an outlier or the start of the new wave, but swing state poll: Wisconsin, Quinnipiac, Registered voters: Biden 50 Trump 44. Three-way: Biden 40 Trump 39 Kennedy and his Worm, 12. Nevertheless. I'm not confident we can stave off fascism in this country because: worms in Kennedy's brain. AND Trump's trial in Florida has been delayed until the twelfth of never by an unqualified judge HE appointed and his trial in Georgia has been delayed indefinitely – probably into next year - because the appeals court says it WILL listen to Trump's appeal of the ruling that the district attorney didn't have a financial conflict of interest just because she hired her boyfriend to work on the case (because guess what: there IS a deep state and among its constituent parts are the legal system and partisan judges and the Supreme Court and an Attorney General who will go to his grave believing the people exist to serve laws rather than laws existing to serve the people. Also, because OBAMA's most public adviser criticized all the sex talk in the Stormy Daniels testimony and, oh by the way, WORMS IN KENNEDY'S BRAIN. Memory loss, quote: “caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died. I have cognitive problems, clearly. I have short-term memory loss, and I have longer-term memory loss that affects me.”RFK Junior, in a deposition during his divorce in 2012. When Kennedy said I was his HERO - I KNEW something was wrong. MEANWHILE the man who called out The New York Times for its vengeful coverage of Biden answers the Editor-in-Chief's strawman response that the paper won't become part of the Biden campaign. "In general, and this is a complaint I have had about the New York Times that is two decades old – I wish they would take good faith criticism from the left with as much seriousness as they take BAD faith criticism from the right," says Dan Pfeiffer. B-Block (24:51) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Lobbyist Jim Courtovich (if you're going to make a threat by quoting 'The Godfather' you better make sure you get the quote right), Speaker Mike Johnson (you know "intuitively" that non-citizens are voting? Is that like I know "intuitively" that there must have been fraud in your election? No facts, just a Spidey Sense?), and Congressman Mike Collins (You think last week's racism-at-Ole-Miss tweet was disqualifying? Wait'll you see this week's joke about the JFK and RFK assassinations). C-Block (32:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Trump mocked Lawrence O'Donnell after Tuesday's court session, so it's probably time for me to mock him. The day they finally incarcerate Joe Scarborough, O'Donnell will become the least sincere person on MSNBC. Ever seen the pilot of the old HBO show "The Newsroom"? Where the back-up tries to steal the show from the guy he's filling in for? Guess who that's actually about? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Special counsel Jack Smith fires back at Donald Trump's claim that he holds absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. Then, Trump announces his latest stance on abortion, saying it should be up to states. Why those comments are getting bipartisan backlash. Plus, how an epic NCAA tournament could reshape women's sports. Charles Coleman, Katie Benner, Jon Allen, Dan Pfeiffer, Tara Setmayer, & Nancy Lieberman join.
How reliable are political polls in an era when almost no one answers the phone? Pod Save America co-host Dan Pfeiffer tells Brian Stelter that he takes polls "seriously," if not literally, and says Democrats dismiss the data at their own peril. "We are living on the knife's edge," Pfeiffer says, with Donald Trump showing the "slightest of leads right now" over Joe Biden. Pfeiffer explains why he'd rather be the Biden campaign than the Trump campaign and gives tips about how to digest media coverage of the presidential campaign.
Dan Pfeiffer joins the show to discuss the State of the Union, distrust in institutions and the impact the changing media landscape will have on the 2024 race. Colin and lead producer Erin also talk about President Biden's budget and speak with CAP Action's Rose Khattar about a new playbook for women's economic advancement.
Dan Pfeiffer, former senior Obama advisor and host of Pod Save America, joins as a special guest to talk through some of the vibes this week! We ask Dan about special counsel Robert Hur's report that he referred to as a “partisan hit job,” media coverage of Biden's age, and how to survive the dizzying pollercoaster. Then, we give a brief update on Donald Trump's election cases, and discuss his comments on Russia and Tucker Carlson's interview with Vladimir Putin. Just a day before Iowa caucus-goers cast the first votes of the 2024 election, Jen Psaki highlights key takeaways from the final Des Moines Register poll and previews what the results might mean for the Republican field. Former Senior Advisor to President Obama and Pod Save America co-host, Dan Pfeiffer and Tim Miller of The Bulwark join Jen with their analysis. Jen is also joined by Congressman Adam Schiff to talk about how Trump's baseless claim of "presidential immunity" would put any occupant of the White House above the law. She also discusses the recent uptick in swatting attacks on the judges, prosecutors and other public officials involved in Trump's legal cases with legal analysts Neal Katyal and Andrew Weissmann. In recent weeks, Donald Trump has made his plans for a second term clear: he wants to use the military on domestic soil, repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act and increase deportation efforts – to name a few. Former Senior Advisor to President Obama, Dan Pfeiffer, joins former Sen. Claire McCaskill and Jennifer Palmieri to take a closer look at Trump's second term threats. Plus, they shine a spotlight on the rising concerns at the US southern border.
Donald Trump is polling even with President Joe Biden in a likely 2024 rematch, sparking mixed feelings among Democrats 14 months from Election Day. Some are alarmed by the neck-and-neck race, while Biden campaign officials and other allies downplay the recent polls as meaningless this early in the cycle. But there's one thing Democratic strategists agree on: An insurrection scheme and a torrent of criminal charges won't be enough to stop the former president and runaway Republican primary front-runner from returning to the White House. “Despite awaiting trial on 91 felony counts, Trump is a coin flip away from the presidency,” Dan Pfeiffer, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, wrote. “Because of the Electoral College and our highly polarized politics, we should assume that every presidential election will depend on a number of voters smaller than the attendees at a Taylor Swift concert.” Related article: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/biden-trump-tied-polls-rcna103893 Independent Thought is joining with Counterpoint Politics, Cocktails and Capitalism & Power Is Taken Not given, to create a brand new show - The Left Wing Firstly, yes, Independent Thought is still going to continue, this is an additional show that I'll be a part of. And the candidate for the US Senate in Missouri, Lucas Kunce, joins to talk about Josh Hawley's obsession with manhood, some surprising endorsements that he's gotten in that red state, and how Missourians' lives would change if he replaced Hawley.Support Lucas Kunce: https://lucaskunce.com/Shop merch: https://briantylercohen.com/shopYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/briantylercohenTwitter: https://twitter.com/briantylercohenFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/briantylercohenInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/briantylercohenPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/briantylercohenNewsletter: https://www.briantylercohen.com/sign-upWritten by Brian Tyler CohenProduced by Sam GraberRecorded in Los Angeles, CASee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
