    Tom Chapman, Barber + Lifesaver

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 9, 2022 63:42

If someone told you they were thinking of ending their life, what would you do? Or how about if someone was sitting right there in front of you, feeling despair inside but not talking about it - would you have any idea what signs you might be looking out for?Tom Chapman is a successful Barber and Hair Stylist. He lost a friend to suicide and realised after hearing the news that they'd crossed paths and had a chat soon before that tragic act.  He had no clue about the dark place his friend found himself in.  And even if he'd been aware, would he have been equipped to help him?Tom came to realise that as a Barber he develops an ongoing relationship with a lot of male clients. Suicide disproportionately affects men and, more broadly, men's Mental Health Awareness is something that needs to be radically improved. For many the Barber's chair is a safe space - a place to talk more freely to someone they know and trust, but who's outside their day-to-day social group. How about educating and empowering Barbers and Hair Care Professionals to feel more confident about looking for signs of Clients struggling? And if they are, making sure they know how to signpost that person to sources of help. That's how the Lions Barber Collective was founded and in this episode Tom tells us all about it and the career journey that took him there.https://www.thelionsbarbercollective.com/https://www.instagram.com/tomchapman_hair/Here's a link to watch Tom's 2018 TED Talk.https://youtu.be/jjAQTH0aZJABackwards Glance is hosted, produced and mixed by Producer Director & Content Creator Carlos Peña of Feelgood Footage. Ben Warren, Instagram Entrepreneur

Ben Warren sells classic football boots; Instagram is his shop window. If you don't know what a 'classic' football boot is, don't worry, neither did I really until I crossed paths him well over a year ago.  They're football (soccer) boots that are no longer manufactured by the likes of Adidas and Nike and therefore not available on the high street or from standard retailers. That scarcity makes them desirable to a surprising number of people out there. And that's where Ben's company, BW Boots UK, comes in.Unlike Ben - a self-professed 'boot geek' - I'm not fascinated by the product. Rather what piqued my interest was that I'd never met someone who had set up and run a successful business leveraging (pretty much exclusively) Social Media. I wanted to know a lot more so on that first day we met I pitched the idea of doing something more involved which - more than 18 months later - turned into this podcast conversation. Thanks for your patience, Ben!  We discuss how he came to run his own business, a decision he made a young age, the challenge of evolving Instagram algorithm and why Premier League player Likes and Shares make a big difference in driving traffic. You can find Ben's company here...https://www.instagram.com/bwbootsuk/https://www.bwbootsuk.com/And if you're interested, on that first day we met, I made a little micro documentary on him...https://www.instagram.com/p/B5ccNMJn984/Backwards Glance is hosted, produced and mixed by Producer Director & Content Creator Carlos Peña of Feelgood Footage. Craft Beer has exploded in popularity during the last 20 years but the industry - certainly on the production side - remains dominated by men. The journey to becoming a Head Brewer in this highly competitive sector is arduous for anyone but, for women like Charlotte Cook, it will also undoubtedly include shocking levels of sexism. Not only has Charlotte refused to buckle under that hostility, but she's determined to describe those experiences as she believes it's perhaps the only way to promote real change. In this episode we hear how an American IPA she was recommended changed the course of her entire working life, discuss her start at Brew Dog and subsequent involvement with 'Punks with Purpose', a group of former employees highly critical of the working culture at the hugely successful Scottish craft beer brewer, plus her hopes for a better Beer industry.** Links **Charlotte preferred social media platform is Twitter - you can find her @ilikeottersIf you are interested in listening to Charlotte's appearance on BBC Radio 4's flagship 'Women's Hour', alongside Beer Writer Melissa Cole, here is a link...https://bbc.in/34cV8iB You may need to sign in with a BBC account login to access the clip. John Sweeney, Investigative Reporter

PLEASE BE ADVISED: the topics of conversation include warfare, murder, terrorism and a critique of Scientology, together with some swearing (plus plenty of laughter).John Sweeney is a storyteller and believes "the best stories are the ones Power and Money don't want told." That conviction has driven a successful career, first as an investigative newspaper reporter and then as a BBC Broadcast Journalist, most notably on the Current Affairs flagship, 'Panorama'.In 2007 video emerged of Sweeney's explosive shouting match against a Church of Scientology official. The confrontation occurred during the production of a Panorama film investigating the organisation and the clips promptly went viral. Sweeney knew that - for better or worse - that incident with stick with him for life. After an acrimonious departure from the BBC in 2019 Sweeney nosedived to a personal and professional nadir. However the following year a podcast would kickstart a comeback. 'Hunting Ghislaine', his detailed reporting of the murky world inhabited by Ghislaine Maxwell, was one of the most successful podcasts of the year and has supercharged Sweeney. In this episode he talks through all these events, as well as his childhood and early career influences. John is a great raconteur and admits that his humour is very dark, but very necessary. When you spend your professional life examining some of the bleakest aspects of the human condition you need to laugh to protect yourself - and also enjoy a glass or two of great wine.Backwards Glance is hosted, produced and mixed by Producer Director & Content Creator Carlos Peña of Feelgood Footage. By his own admission 'words' were pretty much the only thing Peter Hogan was good at when he was at school - creative writing and wordplay came fairly easily to him. After realising that he decided to make the most of that natural ability, first working in Music & Film journalism, book selling and the finally becoming part of the British comic book scene.Peter talks about working with Alan Moore, his time at famous weekly magazine '2000 AD' and how 'Resident Alien', his highly successful series co-created with Steve Parkhouse, came into being. Peter describes how the Writer-Artist creative partnership works for them, and how their story was developed over the course of a decade into a new, well received TV show.  Backwards Glance is hosted, produced and mixed by Producer Director & Content Creator Carlos Peña of Feelgood Footage.
