If you're a craft beer drinker, you've probably had Bell's Two Hearted IPA—and if you haven't, stop what you're doing and fix that. In Episode 13 of Matt Likes Beer, I revisit this iconic American IPA, reflect on my own history with it, and put it through the judging wringer for an honest, guideline-based review. A Familiar Face in the Wild Two Hearted has gone from a hidden gem to a supermarket staple. Back in the day, it was a recommendation from a beer friend whose name and face I've long since forgotten. But the beer? That stuck. It's the one that pulled me into the world of IPAs and hop-forward beers. Even with Bell's acquisition and expansion under Sapporo's umbrella, Two Hearted remains reliably solid—and, importantly, unchanged. It's a 7% ABV American IPA brewed with 100% Centennial hops, delivering citrus, grapefruit, and pine aromas that punch your nose before the glass hits your lips. It's a go-to in restaurants with thin tap lists and a reliable backup when the local stuff isn't doing it. Style Showdown I reviewed it under BJCP's 21A American IPA guidelines. Despite occasional (and misguided) arguments that it's too dark or too alcoholic to be a “true” IPA, it fits perfectly into the style. My judging breakdown? Appearance: Orange-gold and glowing. 3/3. Aroma: Orange zest, grapefruit, tropical fruit, light sweetness. 12/12. Flavor: Great hop expression, solid bitterness, but lacking distinct malt character. 15/20. Mouthfeel: Smooth and well-carbonated. 5/5. Overall: Delicious, but a bit more malt balance would elevate it. 7/10. Final Score: 42/50 Clone Attempts & Price Shock I've even tried to clone this beer using Bell's own ingredients from their old General Store (RIP). The results? Close, but no Centennial cigar. Brewing variables like yeast handling and water chemistry make a big difference. Also? The hops didn't seem all that different from the ones I normally buy. Still, a fun experiment. Then there's the unforgettable sticker shock moment: $16 for a 16oz Two Hearted at a Columbus Blue Jackets game. Worth it? Maybe. Shocking? Absolutely. One-Star Review Roulette The internet delivered again, with some hilariously bad takes: “Tastes like dog shit.” (A classic.) “Most ungodly bitter beer I've ever tasted.” “Deserving of a 75… 1 out of 5 stars.” (Math is hard.)

Send us a textFor this episode of Brewstilled, I'll be recapping HBO's The White Lotus season 3 episode 6. For episode 6, the theme was denial in where some of the characters experienced their own moments of denial. With just 2 episodes left in season 3, we're getting close to what should be a crazy finale with all of the season 3 story arcs coming to their conclusion. We saw Timothy embark on a moment of self-discovery that could hold the key for him finding peace. We also saw the dynamic between Laurie and Jaclyn and Kate continue to spiral towards to a falling out. For Rick, he's still in Bangkok for his quest towards justice, yet how he does it remains to be seen. I'll discuss this and more here on Brewstilled with an American IPA from Cellarmaker Brewing as the beer pairing.

Over the past 15 years of Fat Head's (https://fatheads.com) existence, they've won 27 GABF medals (14 gold) and a dozen World Beer Cup medals (seven gold), but brewmaster Matt Cole takes it all in stride with typically Midwestern humility. They love to win, but they do it for the sake of making great beer. There's a modern sensibility to their flagship American IPA, Head Hunter—one of our Best 20 Beers in 2023 (https://beerandbrewing.com/the-best-20-beers-in-2023/)—which feels West Coast–driven but with an almost analog-like warmth that makes it accessible and refined without sacrificing any of its urgency and presence. And their approach to open fermentation of German-style weissbier is a master class in controlling ester and phenol production for flavorful yet balanced beers. Ask Cole, however, and he'll chalk it up to quality ingredients and sound process. “Good product in, good product out.” In this episode, Cole discusses: soft fining to protect bitterness and aroma brewing American IPA with a strong West Coast vibe evaluating new-crop-year hops in the brewhouse after selection selecting hops at the brewery with input from the entire brewing team tagging hops from different selected lots for different usages in a brew maximizing natural hop flavor and aroma with whole-cone hops in the hopback the stylistic overlap of West Coast and American IPA dialing in packaging for competition fermenting weissbier in an open fermentor using a flotation tank to clean up brews the importance of process over recipe And more. fWotD Episode 2651: Blackrocks Brewery Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 7 August 2024 is Blackrocks Brewery.Blackrocks Brewery is a craft brewery in Marquette, Michigan. Taking the name from a local landmark, former pharmaceutical salesmen David Manson and Andy Langlois opened Blackrocks in 2010. They originally brewed their products in the basement of a Victorian-style house, and they used the building's other two floors as a taproom.By 2013, persistent high demand for Blackrocks' beer led Manson and Langlois to add an outdoor patio and increase their brewing capacity. This included the purchase and conversion of a nearby former Coca-Cola bottling plant. In the early 2020s, they expanded the brewery's taproom into an adjacent property to double its available indoor area.As of 2024, Blackrocks is the largest craft brewery in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Their most popular beer is 51K, an American IPA.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Wednesday, 7 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Blackrocks Brewery on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joanna.

Any brewery that opened in 2020 deserves respect for making it through one of the toughest times in human history to open a brand new business. One such brewery is Aylmer, QC's 5e Baron, a two-time winner of our Quebec Brewery of the Year. Co-Founder Jacob Barrette joined Cee and Nate to catch up on what's been happening since his last pod appearance for 5e back in late 2020, he touched on their emphasis on lagers and West Coast IPAs, their unique approach to beer, why they're so impeccable at every style they attempt, how they've engaged their local community, why representation in beer is important, and his love of English and Belgian beers. They got into five amazing brews - Des Moines Helles Lager, Céleste New England Pale Ale, Route 66 American IPA, Winter Walks Double West Coast IPA (collab with NathanDoesBeer), and Lucide Dream (Sumatra) Breakfast Stout. Impeccable convo - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Opopoppa is an oddly named pizza place in Malmö. Not only do they have great pizzas and calzones but also an exciting selection of beers. We managed to get two interesting ones. To Ol Svos is an easy drinking American IPA. It's straight up the middle to style IPA pairs well with pizza. Shapes & Objects Beer Co is a new brewery here in Sweden. They've 15 releases in just a few months. They mostly do fruit beers or fruited sours. Piano Keys Raspberry Cream Blackberry Sour is a 6% ABV fruit beer. This collaboration with Ten Hands Brewing and Forager Brewery is a tart, intense fruit beer. We're looking forward to trying trying more from them in the future. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #fruitbeer #sourbeer #ipa #americanipa

In this episode Bob and I continue our trek down the IPA road and we explore the Double IPA. American craft beer lovers are huge fans of the IPA. The quest for more of the India pale ale flavor has led them to the imperial India pale ale, a stronger version of the American IPA, which boasts even more hoppy flavor, aroma and bitterness. Imperial India pale ale is darker in color than the American IPA, substantially more bitter, and high in alcohol by volume. This all-American take on the IPA leaves craft beer fans with plenty of new creations to try. Examples of this style: 1. Russian River – Pliny the Elder 2. Fatheads – Hop Ju Ju 3. Great Lakes Brewing Company – Chill Wave ABV: 7.5-10% IBUs: 60-100 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Columbus Brewing - Bodhi 8.3% ABV 80 IBUs Beer Description: Award-winning double IPA featuring Citra® hops with a pale golden color. In this episode Bob and I stay on the IPA train, and turn our attention to the Hazy IPA. Emphasizing hop aroma and flavor without bracing bitterness, the New England IPA leans heavily on late and dry hopping techniques to deliver a bursting juicy, tropical hop experience. The skillful balance of technique and ingredient selection, often including the addition of wheat or oats, lends an alluring haze to this popular take on the American IPA. Examples of this style: 1. Treehouse – Julius 2. Masthead Brewing Company – Hazy Headlines 3. The Alchemist – Heady Topper 4. Crooked Pecker – Max went to Prague ABV: 6-9% IBUs: 25-60 Color: 3-7 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Tickling the Ivories – Hoof Hearted 7.2% ABV N/A IBUs Beer Description: “Totally dusted,” started Pablo Cruz. “And I can truly say I've never felt better. Posers often overcomplicate it, but I've found all truths associated with the act are easily encapsulated in a few words. Skiing is a dance, and the mountain always leads.” Re-tune that Keytar boiz. In this episode Bob and I finally reach the IPA category. We begin this category with the American IPA. Characterized by floral, fruity, citrus-like, piney or resinous American-variety hop character, the IPA beer style is all about hop flavor, aroma and bitterness. This has been the most-entered category at the Great American Beer Festival for more than a decade, and is the top-selling craft beer style in supermarkets and liquor stores across the U.S. Examples of this style: 1. Bell's – Two Hearted 2. Dogfish Head – 60 Minute IPA 3. Sierra Nevada – Torpedo Extra IPA ABV: 5.5-7.5% IBUs: 40-70 Color: 6-14 Serving Temp: 45-55F Serving Pressure: 7-13 PSI Beer Representation: Fat Heads Head Hunter 7.5% ABV 87 IBUs Beer Description: 2023 World Beer Cup Gold Award American IPA. As part of the recent Craft Beer & Brewing Brewer's Retreat, hosted by Russian River in late May 2023, Jamie moderated panel discussions before a live audience of attendees and featured brewers. A Breakside-Beervana Fireside Chat. How did the American IPA tradition start? Are West Coast beers just about the bitter? Did hazies change everything? What did West Coast breweries take from the east—and how much did East Coast breweries crib from the west? Are there actually two different traditions? Just one? Dozens? American brewers, in reinventing IPAs, have changed the way the world makes beer. But how accurately do we understand our own story? We will get to the bottom of this once and for all. Guests: Noah Bissell, Co-founder of Bissell Brothers Brewing (Portland, ME) Vinnie Cilurzo, Co-founder and Brewmaster, Russian River Brewing (Santa Rosa, CA) Mitch Steele, Co-owner and Brewmaster of New Realm (Atlanta), former Brewmaster of Stone Brewing (Alexandra Nowell, sadly, was sick and couldn't join)
Marcin & Artur visit Anchor Brewing in San Francisco. Since there is no new Brew Ha Ha show today, for this podcast episode we offer again this fun and revealing episode recorded last January 19, with Herlinda Heras' two guests from Maryensztadt Brewery in Poland, Marcin and Artur. Enjoy! Marcin Malecki and Artur Napuripski of Maryensztadt Brewery in Poland are our guests today on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras. Artur is the sales manager as well as a beer sommelier and brewery historian, and Marcin is the brewery's owner. Herlinda Heras has been a beer judge at the Polish national beer competition for the last few years, along with Artur. Herlinda invited them to California for a visit and for a collaboration at Anchor Brewing and a visit to some famous Sonoma County craft breweries. Marcin tells about their visit to Brew Ha Ha sponsor Russian River Brewing Co. and how impressed he was with their Windsor location. They also visited Brian Hunt at Moonlight Brewing. Grodzisz is a smoked wheat beer, which is a unique Polish style. It uses 100% oak-smoked malt. Herlinda finds it refreshing. Artur describes it as a unique style and says the malt is hard to find. Polish brewers stopped making it in 1993 but they revived it recently. Beechwood smoke has a different flavor, like ham or cheese. This oak smoke is more like a campfire and is more subtle. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Craft Brewing in Poland The craft brewing industry is young in Poland. They began about ten years ago with an American IPA. The brewery's name Maryensztadt is a small neighborhood in the heart of Warsaw, part of the old town. They wanted the brewery to be there, but they could not produce alcohol there. So they established the brewery in a small town very close to Warsaw. They try to make the brewery as “green” as possible, or sustainable, using as little energy and water as possible and recycling water. When they visited Russian River Brewing Co., they thought they would like to be that big in ten more years. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Marcin, Herlinda & Artur. Marcin has always been interested in beer and was a consultant brewer before opening the brewery. Artur has been interested in beer since long before the craft beer revolution. He eventually became a beer judge and got a beer and cider judging certificate. He is studying for his mead certification too. Poland has a long tradition of making mead, and even the certifying body, JCP, does not know all about it. Poland is also a huge producer of apples, but not cider apples. There is a small but promising cider revolution going on, but the problem is getting the right apples. There is also a thriving hops production in Poland. Herlinda told Mark Carpenter, former Brew Ha Ha co-host, about Polish beer so he went there on a vacation and met Artur. Anchor Beer was the first good American beer to be available in Poland after the fall of Communism, and many people still remember its arrival and importance at the time. As Marcin says, "...your craft revolution is really great!"
