Global Political Challenges and PredictionsNick Cohen and John Sweeney discuss the current state of global politics, focusing on the challenges faced by powerful leaders like Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. They highlight the recent audacious drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian strategic bomber fleets, which John Sweeney compared to calling out the "Emperor in the Kremlin with no clothes." John expresses caution about predicting the downfall of dictators, citing his past experiences with Mugabe,Putin's Downfall and Ukraine's WarJohn and Nick discuss the current situation in Russia and Ukraine, focusing on Vladimir Putin's leadership and the potential for his overthrow. Sweeney shares Owen's argument that there are 3 tests before Putin's downfall: the lack of a viable successor, a crashing economy, and a competent government.Putin's Influence on Trump John also talks about the potential influence of Putin on Trump, referencing the Steele dossier (written by former Mi6 officer Christopher Steele.) They agree that while the dossier's claims about Trump's personal behaviour could not be proven, the allegations about Putin's intervention in the 2016 US election were accurate. John highlights the importance of understanding the geopolitical implications of Ukraine's drone attack on Russia, emphasising the need for a realistic approach to global politics.Trump's Waning Influence and ChallengesJohn talks about the complex relationship between Trump and Putin, highlighting a potential compromise involving Trump's authoritarian leanings and shared worldview with Putin, despite effective sanctions against Russia that only Congress can repeal. He explained that Trump's chaotic tariff policy and proposed fiscal measures are damaging the real American economy, reducing his political capital to influence events in Ukraine. They also discuss Trump's mini-me Nigel Farage and Reform councils taking down the Ukrainian flagUkraine's War & British PoliticsJohn discusses the military situation in Ukraine, noting that while Russian drones are causing problems for Ukraine, the country's huge size means it can retreat significantly before the situation becomes catastrophic. We caught up with Sweeney at the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where he was scheduled to compete in the Pennzoil Indy car that John Andretti originally raced for Jim Hall. His story at Long Beach is quite convoluted on many fronts and includes yours truly getting some fantastic pit work from him and his crew! Comedian/Union Organizer Nato Green, Part 2 (S7E8)

Storied: San Francisco

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2025 36:38

In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Nato details the three times he's left his hometown of San Francisco.   The first was when he went to college, which was at Reed in Portland, Oregon, in the mid-Nineties. To get us there, Nato rattles off all of the ways that he was a "comedy head" before that was even a thing. At Reed, he met a guy who's dad was the manager of the Comedy Underground in Seattle. Nato's first time doing stand-up on stage was at the Comedy Underground, in fact.   As he describes it, to say that he bombed that first time would be an understatement. "It's the closest I've ever come to literally shitting my pants." Nato then does a rendition of his first joke that night. Audible growls are heard in our recording.   Nevertheless, he did a few more open-mics at that spot in Seattle. He liked it enough. But after graduating from college and moving back to The City, he dedicated his life to being a union organizer.   As a history student at Reed, he'd written a thesis about the anti-Chinese movement in San Francisco in the 1870s. Nato then explains how the series Warrior is based on this time in SF. There's bits in the story about the incredibly racist and anti-union human for which Kearny Street is sometimes attributed to. That thesis is what got Nato interested in doing labor work.   He resumed going to comedy shows, but not getting up on stage. Around the time he turned 30, he found himself laboring over the jokes he'd tell at all the weddings he'd go to. He was also asked to give talks at labor conferences, which doubled as canvasses for Nato to deliver more of his own comedy material.   All of these comedic sprinklings led him back to the stage. His first regular spot back in SF was the BrainWash (RIP) on Folsom Street. Once again, the jokes bombed, though his pants fared better this go-round. He offers up another telling of a joke from that era of his. You've been warned. As he left the BrainWash one of those nights, local comedy legend Tony Sparks asked him to come back the next week, and he did. Eventually, Nato invited his friends to come see him perform.   He'd moved back to San Francisco in 1997 to do union organizing, as we've mentioned. Two years before that, John Sweeney had been elected president of the AFL-CIO. Sweeney pushed to "organize the unorganized" and bring young people into the labor movement. Nato was part of this wave. He got a job at Noah's Bagels and organized a union there.   He went to anything he heard about that interested him. He and his then-girlfriend/now wife would attend talks and rallies together. Nato would sometimes find himself that only ally at, say, LGBTQIA union meetings. This was well before we even used words like "ally."   Nato was approached to organize workers at the Real Foods on 24th Street. Then the International Longshore and Warehouse Union was beginning to organize bike and car messengers in San Francisco. Nato worked as a car messenger, which he did for three years, and helped organize his coworkers. We go on a short sidebar about bike messenger culture in The City in the late-Nineties. It was huge.   A few moves from union to union here and there, and Nato found himself raising money and helping to open a low-wage workers' center for young and immigrant folks in the service industry. That center is still around today.   The second time Nato left San Francisco was in 2012. This flight took him to New York City, where he relocated to write for his friend W. Kamau Bell's first TV show, Totally Biased. As Nato puts it, he "got the chance to be a Jewish comedy writer living in Brooklyn for six months." Then, in 2018, he and his family moved to Havana, Cuba, for six months while his wife worked on her PhD research.   Nato says that the only time he was tempted to relocate permanently was during his time in NYC. His kids liked it there. They looked at different neighborhoods and even schools. But Nato wasn't all that happy in New York. The experience took a toll on his friendship with Kamau (they've since moved on and are tight once again). And then the show got canceled. The universe had spoken.   That center he'd helped to found back in San Francisco had passed the nation's first minimum-wage municipal law. In 2006, they helped pass paid sick days here in The City. Nato had left the organization just before that to join the California Nurses' Association (CNA). Through that org, he was part of the ultimately successful effort to keep St. Luke's hospital open.   It was after his time with the CNA, 2011 or so, that Nato returned to doing stand-up.   He recorded his first comedy album and went on his first comedy tour (with Kamau). In 2014, he returned to organized labor, joining Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1021. He works there today, as head of collective bargaining.   We return to comedy and Nato lists off some more folks doing open-mics with him a decade or so ago who've moved on to various levels of fame and recognition—Ali Wong, Chris Garcia, Shang Wang, Kevin Camia, Moshe Kasher, and Brent Weinbach, to name a few.   Nato takes us on yet another sidebar, but it's a good one. It's all about the "Punchline Pipeline," the system by which local comics can test their chops for a while until they're ready (or not) to move on to bigger and better things.   It took Nato three years to work up to the level of paid host at The Punchline. Around 2006, to go back, he and Kamau started doing political comedy shows together. This was during the George W. Bush years, when "leftist," "liberal" comedy was big. Then Obama got elected and that type of comedy cooled off considerably. Nato started to host shows at The Make-Out Room monthly. He credits that stint as the time that he "figured it out."   Nato still does stand-up, though not with the intensity with which he performed in his Thirties. Today, he contributes regularly to The Bugle Podcast. He works with Francesca Fiorintini and her Bitchuation Room show. He's also trying to find time to write a book—a funny take on union organizing. And he's kicking around the idea of another comedy album, which would be his third.   Follow Nato on Instagram and Blue Sky. His two albums are available to stream or buy on BandCamp.   We end the podcast with Nato's thoughts on our theme this season: Keep It Local.   We recorded this episode at Nato's home on Bernal Hill in January 2025.   Photography by Nate Oliveira

Today, on February 4th, 2025, we have heard the first complete report by the international panel of medical experts gathered by Lucy Letby's legal team under the guidence of Dr. Shoo Lee.  The report summary was presented in London at a press conference hosted by Sir David Davis, the senior Conservative party MP who has raised questions about the case and declared his certainty that this is a miscarriage of justice. The 14 member panel which includes world renowned experts in neonatology and pediatric medicine was established to asses the case notes of the 17 babies that formed Lucy Letby's two trials. Their conclusion and summary of the medical evidence is crystal clear, they can find no evidence of murder or attempted murder. Dr. Lee and the panel can however find countless examples across the case files of failures in medical care and, chronically sick babies collapsing and dying of natural causes. The experts conclusions stand in stark contrast to Dr. Evans' evidence for the prosecution.  In light of this report we felt it was important to hear Dr. Dewi Evan's interview with John and Ed in full.

Robert Maxwell, a larger-than-life figure with a penchant for control and domination, reportedly humiliated and disciplined his children, including Ghislaine, in ways that reinforced his authority and their subservience. Ghislaine's ability to navigate high-stakes environments and build connections with influential figures likely stemmed from the ruthless survival instincts and opportunistic traits she honed under her father's rule. Critics argue that rather than being a "hostage princess," as some accounts suggest, Ghislaine embraced the privilege and status conferred by her father's wealth, using it as a springboard to further her own ambitions.Rather than viewing Ghislaine as a victim of her upbringing, some contend that her father's unrelenting focus on power and control shaped her own willingness to exploit others for personal gain. Her calculated partnership with Jeffrey Epstein echoes the same hunger for dominance and disregard for moral boundaries that defined Robert Maxwell's life. While her father's behavior undoubtedly influenced her, Ghislaine's active role in creating and perpetuating abusive power dynamics suggests she was not merely a product of her environment but a willing participant who chose to continue the cycle of exploitation. This episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience at Vorboss in central London. Kevin O'Leary spent 30 years as a police officer with the Metropolitan Police retiring as a Chief Superintendent. Kevin was also, now famously, episode No.1 of The Leadership Enigma which started during the pandemic. This episode is a fascinating insight into the world of crime and punishment including undercover policing, hostage negotiation, stolen vehicles, riots, serial killers and more. Kevin decided to become a police officer after he was robbed at knife point at 14 years old and the police solved the crime and actually recovered his bicycle. As a very young probationary police officer Kevin found himself policing the miner's strike in the 1980's during the time Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister and also the Broadwater Farm riots which involved the murder of PC Keith Blakelock, all providing Kevin with a baptism of fire into the world of policing. Kevin's time with the Stolen Vehicle Squad was his initiation in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and learning how to carry a case load of allocated reactive investigations. In 1999 Kevin became involved in the Admiral Duncan Pub bombing. He was around the corner on an unrelated surveillance operation when the bomb was detonated. At the scene, Kevin was faced with chaos and destruction. As one of the first on scene his ability to make quick decisions and prioritise were tested to the max. As a police officer and leader, picking up on 'weak signals' is a must in a world of constant change. Kevin tells the story of dealing with a High Risk missing person which turned into uncovering the actions of an international serial killer, John Sweeney, who is currently serving life in prison and will be the focus of a recent television documentary. Kevin as a senior officer held the role of Head of Undercover Policing for the Metropolitan Police and explains the iconic investigation he was involved in that was headlined in the newspapers as 'The Hip Hop Cop Shop.' Kevin had to make a series of difficult and at times unpopular decisions for the ranks and file officers in order to help protect them from the rigours and stresses of undercover operations. One of Kevin's final roles in his career was as Bronze Commander during the London 2012 Olympics with a funny story of the cycle protest group 'Critical Mass' that had been infiltrated and decided to see if they could intercept the Queen! Kevin is also the 'referee' for the award winning TV show 'Hunted' which is on our screens each year. www.kevinoleary123.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

New podcast announcement. Welcome to our new podcast series 'Was There Ever A Crime: The Trials of Lucy Letby'. Please help us fund this important journalistic project, go to our Crowdfunder here - https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/lucy-letby-was-there-ever-a-crime Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Lucy Letby is Britain's worst female serial killer in modern times. Or is she? On the day she was first convicted, veteran journalist John Sweeney tweeted: "Lucy Letby may well be the victim of a miscarriage of justice, that the Crown has taken a cluster of accidental and natural deaths and pointed the finger at Letby. There is no compelling evidence of a single murder. The law, sometimes, gets it wrong." In a forensic six-part podcast series, Sweeney, who helped free cot death mum Sally Clark in 2003, and investigative writer Edward Abel Smith address the elephant in the courtroom: was there ever a crime? The Crown's version is that there is compelling medical evidence, a confession and a spreadsheet proving she is the only common denominator when death happens on her watch, time and again. Lock her up and throw away the key. That's exactly what the trial judge did. Judge Goss told the court: "There was a deep malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions… you will spend the rest of your life in prison." The parents of those poor babies who died at the Countess of Chester Hospital have been going through hell, with every detail of their child's death being laid out in front of them. Nothing should take away from their tragedy or grief. But it is important in a country where we pride ourselves on our legal system, that Lucy's case is properly scrutinised. The trigger to this case was a spike in deaths in the unit, which looked after very premature, very small babies, sometimes only two pounds in weight at birth, from three deaths per year up to ten in 2015 and eight in 2016. How come? The series examines evidence from multiple Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections and internal reports that highlight significant issues at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit. These reports indicate the unit was understaffed, with workforce levels 20% below national standards, and faced challenges in maintaining proper care standards. The CQC noted poor maintenance of premises, to the point where some risks had to be escalated during inspections due to patient safety concerns. Internal documents from 2015 revealed the unit was "currently understaffed and underskilled," according to the nurse manager. The hospital's overall rating remained "requires improvement," with particular concerns raised about maternity and neonatal services. In other words the hospital was in the shit, literally and metaphorically, in bad condition, poorly staffed, the sink flooded with raw sewage when it rained heavily; that the spreadsheets proving Lucy's guilt tell a lie as dishonest as painting the target around the arrow after it has been shot; that the babies who died were very, very sick; that her "confession" is no such thing rather therapeutic processing of stress; that the medical evidence against her is a poorly evidenced theory, not fact; that the spike in baby deaths in Lucy's unit can be readily explained by the hospital accepting the most vulnerable babies for the first time, a national surge in neonatal deaths and the shit; that there was never proof of a single crime. And the hospital did not publish evidence of a high-risk bacteria in the tap at the neonatal unit. This podcast, from the makers of the award-winning podcast series, Hunting Ghislaine, will be an extraordinary listen. Look out for the first episode, "Was There Ever A Crime? The Trials of Lucy Letby: A Hospital Full Of Shit" The series is being crowdfunded as we are without any commercial backers for this project.
