Paul Carroll joins Jimmy on the podcast today to discuss the Kickstarter campaign for the 5th Limit Break Comics Anthology: Bump in the Night, which, and how cool is this, it's all about Cryptids! Limit Break has put out some amazing anthologies: Turning Roads, Down Below, Fractured Realms, and Wish Upon a Star. This newest anthology mashes up cryptids and ecological horror. Of course there's a Yeti story in it, and Jimmy wrote it. Paul talks about putting these anthologies together, what he looks for in a submission, teases some of the cryptids in it, and talks about some of his other recent work. Jimmy also tells Paul how much it meant to him and Bobby last year at Dublin Comic-Con that Paul invited them both out to dinner and then to a pub, which led to Bobby's "Oh, wow" moment with Declan Shalvey. If you haven't heard that story before, listen to the episode to find out. Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year. Gerry on BlueSky Scott's website The Dark Room Volume 2 from Image Comics From the publisher Gerry Duggan (X-Men & Uncanny Avengers) rejoins your favorite artists Scott & Tamra for the anticipated return of your favorite fantasy/horror/comedy series! Dounia, her ex, a werewolf, and her pal Walt, an incandescent blue skeleton, are joined by a mysterious psionicist fresh from a terrible prison. This time the world is threatened by a powerful old Necromancer that's resurrecting the dead from Finland's Winter War. More curses, more threats, zombies, wizards, cursed objects and the threat of the war to finally end mankind. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. I've got a family history with moonshine. It started when I was a little kid riding around on my grandfather's tractor. He always had a half gallon Mayfield milk jug full of something or other he'd periodically take a swig from and, yes, more often than not the later on in the day it got, the more likely we were to end up in a ditch but that was all part of the fun of our time together. Later I learned he was a part of the illicit trade selling homebrew supplies out the back of his grocery store and was investigated by the AFT, the revenuers to us. We've got a locally famous peach brandy recipe made with a touch of molasses, ok maybe more than a touch. So, you couple that with the fact that I'm the Editor-In-Chief of Comic Book Yeti where we are all about those cryptids and it felt like a no brainer to reach out to the creative team of the new Image Comics series Moonshine Bigfoot. I wrangled industry vet Zach Howard and his protégé Clara Meath on with me to hear all about it. I've been trying to cover more comedy comics projects lately, and this is by far one of the best I've seen in some time. I adore this book. Where else is a bigfoot the normal guy as he navigates aliens, clandestine Illuminati, cryptid hunters, and drunken Smerfs hangining out in a bar with Fantasy Island's Tattoo. You read that right. Make sure to snag yourself a copy of this southern fried gem of a book. Zach Howard's website Clara Meath's website Moonshine Bigfoot From the publisher Buzzard County, 1981—Moonshine Bigfoot spends his days making a living while outwitting clueless cops, reckless rivals, and buffoonish Bigfoot Hunters. Johanna Taylor joins Jimmy on the podcast today to talk about The Ghostkeeper, her original graphic novel that came out in July 2024. Jimmy loved the premise of The Ghostkeeper so much he had to chat with Johanna about it. Now that he's read it and recorded the podcast he's been more devoted than ever around the Yeti Cave to convert others to readers. Johanna is an illustrator and artist with a BFA in animation. She discusses the story and art of The Ghostkeeper, the influence of Oscar Wilde, and finding inspiration as she travels. Jimmy and Johanna discuss some of the important themes of The Ghostkeeper, including dealing with loss and grief, burnout, taking on too much and feeling like you can't ask for help, the importance of caring for your mental health. They discuss all of this within the context of Johanna's beautiful art style. This is a wonderful conversation about a phenomenal graphic novel. The Ghostkeeper has also recently been translated into French AND Johanna was accepted to the Chateau Orqueveaux artist residency! She will be in France the end of April until mid-May. She'll be a guest at the Rayon Vert Comic Festival, and will have book signings in Chaumont, Nancy, and Paris. So if we have any French listeners, be on the lookout for Johanna! Not only that, he listens to their problems and tries to help them move on to the afterlife. It's a gift that's made him an outcast to everyone in town. That is except for his dearly departed grandmother, who he's partnered with to turn this paranormal ability into an honest living, and the local bookshop owner, who seems to be the only non-deceased person willing to give him a chance. But it's all worth it to Dorian, who feels like he's been given a bigger purpose. A chance to save those who cannot save themselves. Then one day, the key to Death's Door is stolen, trapping all the ghosts in the land of the living. Since he's only one who can see them, the spirits rely on Dorian to retrieve the key before it is too late. If they can't move on, they'll soon be consumed by a ghostly rot that has begun to plague them. As it continues to fester and spread, and the ghosts become desperate for relief, Dorian must do whatever it takes to find a way to bring peace to the restless dead—even if that peace comes at the cost of his own…. Sometimes you just need a good diversion to distract you from the dumpster fire that is modern life and few things can immediately take you on the emotional rollercoaster like a good satirical dystopian narrative so I've got first time guest Alice Darrow on with me today to help me break down what is the surprise comic book of 2025 for me, Tramps of the Apocalypse. Sitting somewhere between Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Idiocracy, this is a hilarious dressing down of the modern manosphere through the lens of three damsels causing much distress in 2094 in a world ruled by Quest Ragnor, King Of Males as terrible dudes seek to do what terrible dudes would do in a scenario such as this. Do yourself a favor and make sure to put it on your radar. Tramps of the Apocalypse from Dark Horse Comics From the publisher The year is 2094, and men rule the world. So what has changed in seventy years, you ask? Following the ten-year Sildenafil wars of 2053, Earth has become a barren wasteland. Factions of surviving men led by “Quest Ragnor, King of Males” have taken over the remnants of cities and towns across the globe, capturing and enslaving all women…Well, all women except for three super bimbos with unparalleled bloodlust and an unquenchable thirst for violence: Baby, Belladonna, and Babette. Unwilling to bend to the whims and desires of the buffoons in charge, too slippery to be caught, and too sexy for chains, these three bangin' babes are at the top of Quest Ragnor's most wanted list. Unfortunately for him, they couldn't care less. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I've been talking and thinking recently about the intersection of comedy and comics. It's sort of right there in the name but it's rare to see a comedy forward book released right now which strikes me as particularly odd given the challenging times in which we are living mid 2025 when we could all use a good laugh. My guest today, Anthony Iannaccio, is no stranger to comedy as one of the hosts of the popular podcast Comics and Chronic and he's making his inaugural debut with a new 28-page action/comedy deconstructing the monomyth called Superguy funding and already funded on Kickstarter as we speak. Links: Anthony Iannaccio LinkTree Comics and Chronic Podcast Superguy on Kickstarter From the Kickstarter page Superguy is a 28-page action-comedy comic book written by Anthony Iannaccio and drawn/lettered by Joey Murphy. In the original 10 page Superguy one-shot, which every backer will receive a FREE digital copy of, we introduced the lazy, narcissistic hero Superguy and his once enemy, now turned (unappreciated) sidekick, Robotguy. In this first full-length, 28 page action-packed issue, Robotguy is eager to prove himself as a bonafied hero but Superguy doesn't appreciate the spotlight being taken away from him... The intersection of the genres of horror and humor is a fascinating one. It's something I've brought up several times on the podcast since my first chat with comics writer Kyle Starks. They share the same cadence and rhythms, and it should be no surprise that the recipe comes out as delicious as peanut butter and chocolate, so I was delighted to see Steve Urena's email hit my InBox as someone who's work blending the two I've come to admire. Over the last few years, he's been throwing clever trope combos into the proverbial blender and knocking out successful crowdfunding campaigns ranging from the chronicles of murder sloths with Slow Pokes, to destroying Christmas in X-Maschina (don't stop believing Santa), and now he's back at that most hallowed of American institutions, the mall, with Zombie Date Night 2. Zombie Date Night 2 is funding right now on Kickstarter. From the campaign page Still recovering from the awkwardness of their first Zombie Date Night, main characters Jack and Ginger have reached the scariest place to be…the friend zone. When their survival group realizes they're running out of food, the enthusiastic and outgoing Ginger leads the charge with a very reluctant Jack to find sustenance before the zombaes (zombies who can only survive with a mate) eat them first. Will the second date be better than the first or will this situationship be food for the undead? PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. C. Brennan Knight joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to chat about the current Kickstarter campaign for Tyrant Fall #3, which launches today, April 1st. You can hit the link below to check out the campaign. Brennan describes Tyrant Fall as if Dragon Ball Z was published by Heavy Metal Magazine. He has a long plan for the series and discusses the origins of the series with Jimmy, along with working with artist Max Davenport. Brennan also talks about being a natural introvert and how the promotional part of the crowdfunding experience is particularly exhausting. Tyrant Fall is a great series and Jimmy says fans of Remender and Opena's Seven to Eternity will love, plus the remainder of the creative team is the extremely talented Roman Stevens and Rob Jones. From the KS page for Tyrant Fall #1: Thousands of years ago, the elven Fae Lords benevolently ruled over the world, overseeing an era of peace. Witnessing the ascend of human civilization, the Fae Lords returned to their home realm, the Fae. To mankind, they bestowed two final gifts: dominion of the world and the ancient knowledge of magic. Alan Moore first gained recognition in the 1980s with his work for the comic 2000 AD, and DC Comic's Swamp Thing. He went on to create Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Batman: The Killing Joke, From Hell, an extraordinary take on the Jack the Ripper story, and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. He's often been at odds with publishers and with Hollywood, and in recent years has removed himself from the mainstream, focusing on writing novels, esoteric pursuits, and the practice of a particular kind of Magic. This is a slightly unusual episode. It's a recording of an event we held last October as part of our London Month of the Dead festival. It features, Alan in conversation with the writer Gary Lachman and the artist John Coulthard. The occasion was the publication of 'The Bumper Book of Magic'. a kind of modern grimoire, which Alan had written with his friend the late Steve Moore (no relation), another writer of comics and fellow magic practitioner. It is a book that took 20 years to come to publication. John Coulthard was the main artist and designer of the book. Alan is somewhat of a recluse these days so it was great to have him with us to talk about the book, about his friend Steve Moore, about his practice of Magic, and about the unconscious, dreams, consciousness and creativity. Gary Lachman, a previous guest on this show, was once the bass player for Blondie before he put down the plectrum and picked up the pen, gave up rock and roll for writing, and in the years since has become the U.K.'s foremost writer on the Esoteric John Coulthard is a wonderful graphic artist who worked with Alan on many projects and is a cultural phenomenon in his own right We also hear from the audience with questions to Alan about his practice of magic. Our previous episode with Alan on Counterculture #counterculture, #alanmoore, #johncoulthard, #garylachman, #dreams, #magic, #magick, #magik, #paracelsus, #glycon, #stevemoore, #2000AD, #grimoire

It's becoming increasingly clear from my recent chats on the podcast and all the ones that happen in emails or DMs that a substantial part of the glass ceiling for women working in the comics medium centers around the editorial level, but is that accurate and what exactly might specific barriers be? Now I don't know about you, but to me, you ask an expert. So, I reached out to Rachel Pinnelas. Rachel, has been an Assistant Editor at both Marvel and DC, has worked as a journeyperson across the industry spending time at Aftershock, Dynamite, and Serial Box, and was a Mad Cave Talent Search Winner in 2022 who I'm hoping can shed some light on that question we've been exploring throughout the month of March for the Women In Comics Feature on the show. If you want an accurate assessment of where things stand with respect to the representation of women in the comics industry, this is as about as real talk as you are going to find. We also get to chat about Rachel's contribution as a writer to DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis Halloween Special with her Scarcrow centered story set in a theater, and what she's up to in the near future which includes an exciting comics related museum show that hopefully I'll get to talk about in the near future. I Know What You Did Last Crisis From the publisher In the blackest night, when the darkness feels infinite, the very fabric of the universe begins to tear…as every major crisis in DCU history rises once again! These eight chilling tales, set during the events of crises past, serve to warn you, dear reader: when in crisis, watch your back. In the fractured world of Flashpoint, Professor Pyg is stalking Gotham City's nightclubs, sniffing out victims! During Blackest Night, Scarecrow lurks outside a movie theater, recruiting new test subjects to perfect his fear toxin! Even heroes like Nightwing aren't safe when his death might just have the power to reverse the damage of Infinite Crisis! All these, plus new stories from Crisis on Infinite Earths, Millennium, Zero Hour, The Final Night, and Final Crisis are collected in DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis, a deadly new horror anthology coming to haunt you this fall! Marvel March Madness wraps up with Ryan North! Jimmy gets instantly hooked as he reads his first Fantastic Four comics with volume 1 of Ryan's current run. If you haven't been reading Fantastic Four, you are missing out. Ryan talks a lot about the series, how he approaches writing it, and some of the different artists he's been able to work with. Issue #30 comes out March 26th. Ryan is also writing the new One World Under Doom. Ryan chats about the fun of writing Dr. Doom as the Sorcerer Supreme, and if there were any characters he was excited about using in this series. Hint: there were! It wouldn't be the Cryptid Creator Corner though without Jimmy going rogue and asking Ryan about some of his other works that Jimmy is now obsessed with, including To Be or Not To Be, a book that turns Hamlet into a choose-your-own adventure book. There's also How to Invent Everything, a book whose premise is that your time machine strands you in the distant past and you can't repair it so you might as well get work inventing, well, everything. At Comic Book Yeti we don't know anyone that thinks about time travel as much as Jimmy, except now, maybe Ryan? This conversation is such an excellent end to Marvel March Madness! Follow Ryan on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ryannorth.ca Ryan's website: https://www.ryannorth.ca/ Dinosaur comics: https://www.qwantz.com/about.html Fantastic Four #30 From the publisher FANTASTIC THREE! After Ben Grimm has suffered a terrible (and very public) defeat at the hands of Doom, he's left lost, adrift — and more vulnerable than he has been in years. And when a trip to New York goes wrong and his fate suddenly turns from bad to worse, Ben has never been more vulnerable — and soon takes a shocking shortcut he won't be able to undo! This is one Thing and Alicia story you won't soon forget! One World Under Doom From the publisher ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM! Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria's closed borders. For most, there's enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was...the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's affecting them hasn't affected Earth's heroes - and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom? Marvel's biggest and most shocking event ever begins right here. We live in the era of AI. The technologies many of us saw for the first time in sci-fi movies are now the technological experiments that will define humanity for generations to come. In some ways, that's an exciting concept. How does nature versus nurture apply to machine learning and what exactly are the boundaries we will set to protect us? Human beings are historically bad at implementing guard rails with our new toys. What happens when they are in the hands of a madman? It's something that has been preoccupying my brain recently and was my own filter reading the aptly named We're Taking Everyone Down With Us, a new six issue spy revenge thriller, sci-fi mystery mini-series from Image Comics and I've got just the person to help me digest its complexities first time show guest Matthew Rosenberg. I've been meaning to catch up with Matthew for some time now as someone who's spent as much time in the music business as I have. We get into how he got GG Allin on the loudspeakers at Comics Pro (truly an amazing accomplishment,) take a moment to express a shared love of the 90s comics classic SCUD The Disposable Assassin, break down the trauma of growing up latchkey kids and how that experience shaped the story, and what's exactly with using Starfish as a term of endearment, that's a mad scientist for you. It's a fun chat. Wu Tang is for the children! We're Taking Everyone Down With Us hits shelves on March 25th. From the publisher MINISERIES PREMIERE THE EXPLOSIVE DOUBLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE! After her mad-scientist father is killed by the world's greatest spy, 13-year-old Annalise is left all alone in the world. Sort of. Her dead dad's robot bodyguard is following her around for some reason. Now Annalise has a choice: try to lead a normal life for the first time ever…or seek revenge and maybe overthrow the world order in the process. Image Comics proudly presents a journey of regret and retribution, super spies and pseudoscience, growing up and global domination from brilliant artist STEFANO LANDINI (Prodigy, Hellblazer) and okay writer MATTHEW ROSENBERG (WHAT'S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE?, Uncanny X-Men). As I was setting up the round of interviews that would be our first Women In Comics Feature to celebrate Women's History Month on the podcast, I wanted to get a variety of voices included to represent different facets of the medium. That lead me to reaching out to Barbra Dillon, Editor-In-Chief of Fanbase Press, a GLAAD Winning and Eisner and Harvey Nominated publisher and geek culture website. Who better than Barbra to cover the angle from both the vantage point of a small indy comics publisher as well as comics journalism. Two birds, one stone and I've been meaning to catch up with her since last Fall when their anthology Ripple Effects was crowdfunding which was of considerable interest to me as its focus is to increase awareness of and highlight people with incurable non-visible diseases like myself. I don't know of another comics journalism outlet that shares such a strongly aligned set of core values like Fanbase does so it was a pleasure to finally get a chance to catch up with her and chat about representation in the medium. Fanbase are celebrating their 15th Anniversary in 2025 and provide a range of unique and diverse programming to support creators in the medium. Please take a moment to check them out if you haven't already. Mission Statement Fanbase Press celebrates fandoms and creates new ones! As a GLAAD Media Award-winning and an Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated comic book publisher and geek culture website, Fanbase Press produces new and distinctive works, as well as daily reviews, interviews, and podcasts, that span the pop culture spectrum and give voice to the themes, ideals, and people that make geekdom so exceptional. Fanbase Press believes that #StoriesMatter. Acknowledging the importance of stories and the impact of storytelling is at the core of the organization. Universal communication through stories allows us to examine the essentials of human existence, to understand ourselves better and to grow and/or heal, to pass on important values, knowledge, and lessons to the next generation, and to connect with one another through empathy and compassion. Fanbase Press holds a commitment to looking beyond the simple entertainment factor of pop culture storytelling in order to find the value that each story offers to us as individuals, our world, and/or the human condition. The company was founded in 2010 (originally under the name Fanboy Comics) rebranded to Fanbase Press in May 2016 by co-founders Barbra and Bryant Dillon. Fanbase Press' graphic novels, including the 2024 GLAAD Media Award-winning Four-Color Heroes, 2023 Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated Ripple Effects, 2018 Eisner Award-nominated Quince, the 2020 IPPY Award-winning Quince: The Definitive Bilingual Edition hardcover, the 2022 International Latino Book Award-winning Nuclear Power, the 2019 IPPY Award-winning A Geek's Guide to Cross-Stitch: Journeys in Space, the 2014 Bram Stoker Award-nominated Fearworms: Selected Poems, The Sequels, The Margins, The Gamma Gals, Something Animal, Identity Thief, The Arcs, and Penguins vs. Possums, are available online at www.fanbasepress.com. A surprisingly stripped-down comic book movie, especially when compared with modern examples! Absolutely brutal slow motion violence! Absurdly large buildings!
