As regular listeners will know, I spent seven years living in the greater Puget Sound area and despite having lived in eight different states, it's one of two places that will always be home to me. There's something about small Washington State towns that can feel delightfully out of time and there's no greater contrast to them than the technology centric hub that is Seattle crowned by its futuristic Space Needle. It elicits a range of complex emotions as a former local that the visitor will never understand primary among them is a clash between modern advancement and the struggle of smaller coastal communities to hold onto their ways of life and cultural identities. This was my personal filter going into reading The Stoneshore Register, a delightful new graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and I have the perfect person to hang out to tell us all about it, first time guest G. Willow Wilson. Yes, I do go off on a bit of a tangent about gardening but we'll call that a Poison Ivy interlude, and we wrap things up covering what we can expect to see in Marvel's new ongoing Black Cat series.
You might not think digital coloring brushes screams excitement—but hear me out. The Last Band On Earth is hands-down one of my surprise sleeper hits of 2025, and I'm psyched to welcome first-time guest Elaine M. Will onto the show. We're diving into her process, geeking out over digital brushes, and pulling back the curtain on her eerie, hilarious, and heartfelt new graphic novel chock full of demons and tentacles. Elaine, creator of the Xeric Award–winning Look Straight Ahead, has a knack for highlighting the struggles of mental health using a unique combination of horror and humor storytelling in her work and this was no exception. Having spent over fifteen years in the trenches with bands, I know the depressive shadow that can follow musicians around and I'm delighted to get a chance to expose more people to it through highlighting this book.
Christopher Cantwell returns to the podcast to discuss his upcoming graphic novel: KID MAROON. Chris has teamed up with Victor Santos and Vault Comics to tell this story of a hard-boiled kid detective on the streets of Crimeville. Chris chats with Jimmy about the origins of this series, the incredible work of Victor Santos, and the hilarious "life" of Pep Shepard. Chris discusses the joy of collaboration, making sure the story works for the medium you're working in, and how KID MAROON could only work as a comic. Plus, Chris talks about the upcoming RED SHIRTS and the trade for OUT OF ALCATRAZ. There's so much great stuff coming out from Chris! KID MAROON comes out September 24th. John Lees returns to the podcast to discuss his newest comic from Mad Cave Studios: ORLA! John has partnered with Sally Cantirino, Dearbhla Kelly, and Lucas Gattoni for this tale of love and monsters, well, one monster in particular, The Ick. John and Jimmy discuss some of the terrible men Orla finds herself dating, the wonderful visual jokes the incredible Sally Cantirino added to the story, and the fun of making a comic with all the tropes of a romantic comedy. John also talks about the current Kickstarter campaign for Grawlgore & Shanks that he worked on with Joe Mulvey being published by ComixTribe. It's Lord of the Rings meets Knives Out, and it looks incredible. John is a fantastic storyteller who is so passionate about the collaboration of making comics and it's great to have him back on the podcast. From the Publisher Love is a monster. Orla Bard is an antique restorer, romance novel enjoyer and keen birder. She also believes in true love, continuing to navigate Seattle's singles scene despite repeated disappointment. But Orla has a secret. She is afflicted with The Ick, a man-eating monstrous entity dwelling inside her, who violently emerges whenever she gets too angry or afraid. Unable to rid herself of this curse, Orla uses The Ick to save other women by removing the scummiest men from the dating pool…permanently. Hearts (and bodies) will be broken in this offbeat romcom/creature-feature mashup! Order ORLA Check out Grawlgore & Shanks #1 on Kickstarter Follow John on Bluesky Follow Comic Book Yeti
Writer, Professor, and Futurist Mark Sable joins Jimmy on the podcast to talk about BOXED. BOXED is a grounded sci-fi thriller about a rogue A.I. The story was created by Mark and artist Jeremy Haun and originally published by Comixology Originals. Mad Cave Studios will be publishing the print edition with new bonus content on September 9th. Mark talks about the real life circumstances that led to his comic Unthinkable, his work as a futurist, his influences for writing BOXED, what fascinates/worries him most about A.I., plus some talk about D&D and Chaotic Neutral. BOXED From the Publisher: Since the first superintelligent A.I. went rogue and massacred the world's top computer scientists, it has been government agent Frank Savage's job to contain—or “box”—sentient artificial intelligence before they can become a threat to humanity. When Hippocrates, the Center for Disease Control's A.I., exceeds its programming and locks down hundreds of thousands of people, Frank is forced to turn to Pandora— an A.I. he onced boxed—to contain it. The problem? Pandora is a “honeypot” A.I. designed to seduce and destroy its targets… and Frank's ex-girlfriend. With the fate of humanity on the line, can Frank trust Pandora, or will their shared past threaten the entire mission? I don't fanboy often, but I'm making an exception for today's guest. When Jesse Lonergan was last on the show, he was talking about Man's Best with co-creator Pornsak Pichetshote. Back then, I had no idea who he was. That changed instantly. Jesse is back to talk about Drome, his new graphic novel and one of my favorite books of 2025. I can already guarantee it'll land on my year-end awards list, I'm just not sure which category yet. Drome is a singular reading experience, packed with some of the most innovative and intricate panel layouts I've ever seen. It even hijacked my dreams the night I read it. If you're into ambitious, boundary-pushing comics, don't miss this deep-dive conversation with one of the most creative storytellers in the medium. And be sure to grab a copy of Drome so you can say you loved it before the awards started rolling in.
Today's episode is a first for the show—we're joined by an Oscar nominee! Michael Grover, also a Harvey and Eisner Award nominee, sits down to talk about his genre-defying webcomic Deeply Dave, which is being collected into a vertical format graphic novel with Henry Holt. As a longtime fan, I was eager to learn how he's adapting such a multimedia-rich experience—complete with GIFs, music, and animation—into print form. We also dive into his upcoming project Jake Spooky and the Wolves Within Him, where, you guessed it, werewolves take center stage. I can't help myself with the werewolf projects. Michael's work pushes the boundaries of what comics can be, and if you're interested in the future of storytelling, you won't want to miss this conversation.

I'm so excited because today my Let's Talk Shop series goes international. I like this trend. As the formatting goes, I get a recommendation from show guests on who their favorite comic book shop is. When I had comics artist PJ Holden on recently about his new Mad Cave Studios project Dark Pyramid, he said to look no further than his local Belfast hang out Coffee and Heroes. So, I reached out to owner Alan Taylor who has a very interesting journey to becoming a floppy proprietor, a two star Michelin restaurant. Wild right? We get into all that, the differences between the distribution in the UK and the US, what some of our favorite projects of the moment are, and share a story about having Daredevil as a foundational comics character. Ben and Rob feel “DREDD”, the 2013 Pete Travis directed adaptation of 2000AD's megastar character Judge Dredd, starring Karl Urban, Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby. Written by Alex Garland (director of ‘Ex Machina', ‘Civil War', ‘Warfare'), ‘DREDD' struggled to make back its budget, despite good reviews and praise for its accuracy to the source material. But why did ‘DREDD' flop so hard at the box office? Was it the studio's awful need for this to be ‘DREDD 3D'? The general public not knowing who the hell Judge Dredd is? Or was it due to a certain secret director having to save the project from Pete Travis, the credited leader of the adaptation?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much MUCH more!PLUS! Despite running a comics journalism outlet, comics conventions are something I don't know a lot about, certainly not from the operational side of things so I decided to bring in an expert. It's a regional midsized comic con in operation since 2016 focused on comics and Jon was willing to share all the ins and outs of setting up an event of this size including some really fantastic advice for newer creators looking to visit a comics convention. Mark London returns to the Cryptid Creator Corner for the 3rd time and he's here to discuss the Mad Cave Studios Underworld Universe and the Endless Nightcrossover event. Mark has been writing the 3 series (4 issues each) leading up to Endless Night. Revolution 9, with artist Carlos Reno, Hour of the Wolf, with artist Danilo Beyruth, and Exit City, with artist Karl Mostert (sadly Karl passed away in the latter half of 2024). Each series is a different genre. Revolution 9 is high octane action about a rogue assassin, Hour of the Wolf is supernatural horror, and Exit City is neo-noir sci-fi. Now, with Endless Night, Mark has brought all three together with artist Tom Derenick. Do you want to know how? You'll have to listen to the episode, but Mark discusses the challenges of bringing these 3 disparate stories together including finding the right tone and balance. Mark also tells Jimmy about Mad Cave Digital and gives a few hints about the future of Revolution 9, Hour of the Wolf, and Exit City. Mad Cave fans, you're going to want to listen to this episode. Follow Mark on Bluesky Follow Mad Cave Studios on Bluesky Learn more about Mad Cave Digital Endless Night #1 From the publisher When Axel Black, an obsessive tech billionaire and head of the sinister Order of Nine, sends his operatives to Exit City in search of a dangerous mystical artifact, only a team of unlikely allies from different corners of the underworld can prevent an apocalyptic catastrophe: VELVETEEN, the elite rogue assassin hellbent on revenge; McCORMICK & MILLER, two detectives keeping peace in a lawless city; and OWEN BLACKWOOD, a monster hunter duty-bound to stop evil. But tensions are mounting, and time is running out! ENDLESS NIGHT is Mad Cave's miniseries event of Summer 2025, a genre-smashing collision of archetypal heroes by celebrated writer MARK LONDON (Battlecats, Hunt.Kill.Repeat.) and acclaimed artist TOM DERENICK (Justice League), set in the universe of dark conspiracies, hard-boiled mystery, and unnatural menace known as UNDERWORLD! Hour of the Wolf From the publisher With Owen and Jan fighting for their life in the year 1888, the children are preparing for Ellen's kidnap in the present. Time is running out and the Businessman's transaction is almost complete. Will Owen and Jan make it out alive and save Ellen, or will the Businessman claim another victim? Witness the thrilling conclusion in the final issue of Hour of the Wolf! Revolution 9 From the publisher After years as an assassin for the Order of Nine—an ancient order dating back almost 3,000 years—Velveteen has turned her back on the very organization that saved her. Tasked with the murder of otherwise innocent hacker Jasper Dean, she sets off to save his life and discover the terrible secret that marked him for death. With the entire Order after them, Velveteen and Jasper must escape their grasp and prevent them from toppling society as we know it. Sometimes you see a product that you think might just have a chance in this weird comics ecosystem to make a positive dent in creator sales numbers and I think I've just found one. There's a new kid in town in the digital comics reader space, Sweet Shop. Kenny Meyers is the mastermind behind Sweet Shop; a digital reader platform with a slick interface; Bindings, a simplified comic creator portal designed to make connection and direct sales simpler; and Find Your Comic Store where you can use an online map to do exactly as the name suggests. All great new products with fantastic UIs that make reading digital books a more enjoyable experience and to help you, and creators, connect in sleek ways never seen before. Kenny calls Bindings a fancy LinkTree, but he's being humble. He joins me today as a first time guest on the show to talk about it all including the exciting topic of metadata...ok, maybe not exciting but important. Seriously, you are adding in metadata, right? Adam Barnhardt joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to discuss his current Kickstarter campaign for Lost Sun #1. This issue continues the adventures of The Magnificent McCoys from SH*TSHOW, which was initially published by Scout Comics in 2020. Jimmy has been a big fan of SH*TSHOW from the very beginning and he and Adam jump into where this new series will find the McCoys. Adam discusses what it was like having his comic set to debut right before a global pandemic hit, the comics he and his collaborators have created since then to build out this universe, balancing work, family, and comics (an all too familiar theme on this podcast). Jimmy also learns that he's NOT the Adam Barnhardt that is a stand-up comedian, but he is the Adam Barnhardt that was once the GM of the Bemidji Axemen. Listen now to find out more! After finishing up writing duties on Star Wars: Battle of Jakku, Alex has taken over writing the main Star Wars title along with artist Phil Noto. Spoiler alert: I think they nailed it. Now, with the main Star Wars title, Alex and Phil are getting to mix high adventure with the political intrigue of forming a New Republic. Alex also talks about The Question: All Along the Watchtower and Dick Tracy. This is a fantastic conversation that Star Wars fans, in particular, are not going to want to miss. I've been meaning to catch up with Eisner Winning comics writer and artist Michael Walsh (Universal Monsters:Frankenstein, Nullhunters) for some time on the show. As a big fan of his work on The Silver Coin, I was particularly excited about the news that he was working on a new project with James Tynion, and what a project this is. Exquisite Corpses is unlike anything else I've ever seen. It's an indy book with a production and marketing engine rivaling the big two and backed by the full force that is Tiny Onion and its plethora of talented worker bees. I'm not typically a single issue person, usually waiting for trades but after getting an advance sneak peek at this, I'm all in every month as it will be that read in the car book many people will anxiously await each month. They've assembled an all star team of rotating talent to work on different issues but retained the same letter and colorist to maintain some visual continuity throughout. As the architect of much of the visual language of the book and its various villains, it was a joy to hear all about Michael's character design process and the unique nature of collaborating that helped create the blueprint for what will be one of the most exciting series of 2025. Michael's website Michael's shout outs Becca Carey - project letterer Courtney Maynard Exquisite Corpses From the publisher Every five years on Halloween, the wealthiest families in America play a game. Twelve of the deadliest people in the world are dropped into a small town with just one goal: last killer standing wins. For the citizens of Oak Valley, Maine—this year's unlucky arena—the goal is much simpler. They must survive the night. Experience a comics event like no other, from the minds of JAMES TYNION IV & MICHAEL WALSH, as they lead a group of the most exciting voices in the industry. Over thirteen blood-soaked chapters, these creators will collaborate and compete to determine who wins and who dies—and the games begin in this triple-sized debut! Exquisite Corpses is an extended collaboration between Tynion and Walsh, who wrote the creative bible for the series, and some of the most acclaimed and popular creators in comics, including Adam Gorham (Hellhunters), Becca Carey (Absolute Wonder Woman), Che Grayson (Dark Spaces: Good Deeds), Claire Roe (Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special), Gavin Fullerton (The Closet), Jordie Bellaire (Redlands), Marianna Ignazzi (Catwoman), Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian), Tyler Boss (You'll Do Bad Things), and Valentine De Landro (Bitch Planet). Recent Comic Book Yeti contributor and all-around swell gentleman, Luis Godoy, joins Jimmy to talk about his current Kickstarter for This Eternal Coil. Luis discusses how at first he didn't realize the story he was writing was so personal as he channeled tragedies in his life into his writing. In particular, Luis talks about the loss of his father in the same year his son was born. One of the things that really comes through in this discussion is Luis' passion for storytelling, in general, and comics, in particular. This Eternal Coil: This Eternal Coil is a 20-page comic book about the emotional and physical journey taken by a Mexican father and his daughter after the death of their matriarch. The death sets off a chain of events which draw the father into a trip through the afterlife and the daughter to investigate the strange events left in her mother's wake.Abraham is a former private investigator and current drunk. Abraham has become obsessed with figuring out a mystery that no one believes happened, even his own daughter, Elena. I've been thinking of stories as transportation lines recently, maybe that's because I've been trying to catch up on some older Star Trek episodes lately and thinking about how transporters work too much, but there's something fascinating about that idea of being transported from the physical space in which you reside and into the one fabricated in your mind especially when someone builds some entertaining scaffolding for you in a narrative. Now the special ones, they pull a magic trick and get you trapped in between those two worlds. I believe the bougie term is a liminal space, but those stories possess a certain something that makes them legendary. I'm thinking the wardrobe in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Luke Skywalker training in the swamp on Dagobah, or anything really from David Lynch. I absolutely love these types of stories, so it is my pleasure to host cartoonist Kit Anderson on the show with me today who knows a thing or two about playing in liminal spaces. Kit is an Ignatz Award Nominee and the creator behind one of my favorite books of last year, Safer Places, which I have continually raved about, and she has new graphic novel called Second Shift dropping in July from Avery Hill in much the same vein. Safer Places From the publisher From road trips to doctors' offices to the mysterious spaces under the house, these short stories explore the secrets and magic typically unseen in everyday life. A walk through the forest, a family move, a day in a normal life—Anderson's depictions of these ordinary moments transform them with a double-take, revealing the strangeness, surreality, and transformation within. With powerful and personal emotional writing and art, thoughtfully combining magic and life as we all know it—these stories establish Kit Anderson as a presence in short comics-format fiction. Second Shift From the publisher The future. AI and algorithmic influence has become prevalent. Humans are groomed to be usefully applied by the megacorporations that control Earth. Some “choose” to work on new colonies off-world. Most of the time they spend as “Drop-Ins,” suspended in a digital environment. They live out intricate artificial lives, are entertained, socialise with AIs, and undergo occupational training. Until they are woken… Alone on a TERRACORP outpost, Birdie Doran and a few other employees serve on isolated shifts processing comets and asteroids for terraforming. When Birdie discovers a second station, abandoned and strange, she starts to see what her job--her life--really is. Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year.
