SEASON 2 - EPISODE 193 Lydia Dean Pilcher - Producer / Director In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with producer and director Lydia Dean Pilcher (A CALL TO SPY, QUEEN OF KATWE, THE DARJEELING LIMITED). From producing plays in her parents' garage to making feature films and documentaries seen around the world, Lydia has always been drawn to the power of stories. Throughout our conversation, we discuss the lifelong impact of growing up in the United States during the Vietnam War era, her varied work as a producer and director, and how she developed her skills working in the New York film scene. Lydia also reflects on her longtime collaboration with director Mira Nair, and we learn how Lydia helped produce many of Mira's films such as MISSISSIPPI MASALA and THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST. She later helps clear up the differences between the numerous producer credits, and she reflects on how the business of producing and financing films has changed how she does her job nowadays. Plus, Lydia reveals which mountain she slept on while attending the inaugural edition of the Sundance Film Festival and which previous guest of the podcast spent nine weeks of nights working in the prop department of Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS. If you enjoyed listening to Lydia, then you'll love listening to her husband (and production designer) Mark Friedberg (Season 2, Episode 160). - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

I could present my honorary tenure with European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). As long as I did all of that with my tongue in cheek, you'd likely realize I was having my way with word-smithing the fantastic. You see, I'm a novelist.Rather than having an academic history in the Sciences, I started with a graphic design degree. Yeah. That was me doodling up the cover and several illustrations within. I parlayed that into a television production career. Most movies treat mental health like a plot twist—something dramatic, visible, and easily explained. But real depression and anxiety don't work that way, and filmmaker Olivia Nash is determined to flip the script and show a more realistic portrayal. In this episode, host Gabe Howard sits down with the actor, writer, and director of the indie film “Hi.” to tease out what it really means to portray mental health authentically on screen. Welcome listeners to Your World of Creativity, where we talk with creative professionals around the globe about how they bring ideas to life. Our guest today is Jordan Morris—an award-winning producer, director, and screenwriter known for Nintendo Quest and Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, which won TIFF's People's Choice Award for Best Documentary. He's also the creator of the Life & Death Story Model™ and founder of the Six Months to Screenplay program. Jordan is known as The Writer Igniter—and we're excited to explore how he helps writers bring emotionally powerful stories to life.Jordan 's Website Here's an overview of our conversation:1. The Story Starts HereJordan, your Life & Death Story Model™ is a fascinating framework. What inspired you to rethink traditional narrative structures, and how does it shift the way writers approach their scripts from the start? Can you give us a quick example of this model in action?2. From Plot to PulseYou say, ‘Plot grabs attention. Emotion keeps it.' What does it take for writers to master The Emotional Arc™—and why do so many scripts fall flat in this area? How do you help writers dig deeper emotionally without losing structure?3. Story Forge & Undercooked ConceptsYou've coined the term ‘undercooked concepts'—which feels painfully accurate for many writers. What's your process for Story Forging™, and how can it help pressure-proof a story idea before diving into draft one?4. The Writer's Voice & MindsetOriginality isn't always about ideas—it's about voice. How do you coach writers to uncover a voice so distinct it can't be ignored? And what mindset shift must occur for a writer to go from aspiring to producing? How do you balance preserving voice with the demands of marketability or genre?5. Creativity in a Changing LandscapeYou've worked across theatre, film, and now community-building with Storytowne. How do you see the creative process evolving today—especially with new tools like AI? Are we witnessing the revolution or the ruin of storytelling? What role does Six Months to Screenplay play in future-proofing storytellers?Sponsor:This episode is sponsored by White Cloud Coffee Roasters. What secrets lie hidden in the patterns of crop circles? The truth might be more confounding than you think. Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of crop circles and uncover the science behind this enduring mystery? From stunning geometric designs to unexplained physical anomalies, this book takes a rigorous, data-driven approach to one of the most enigmatic phenomena of our time.Inside, you will discover illustrated data on:   The history and evolution of crop circles, from ancient folklore to modern-day marvels.   Compelling case studies—featuring the most intricate and baffling formations ever documented.   The hard evidence—soil samples, plant analysis, and eyewitness accounts that defy explanations.Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or simply curious, this book offers a balanced and thought-provoking exploration of crop circles that will challenge your understanding of what may be.Don't miss your chance to unravel the mystery. The answers are waiting… if you dare to look.BioYou might expect to learn of my advanced degrees in agronomic engineering, or how I'm an expert in photosynthetic optimization and soil microbiomes. I could present my honorary tenure with the International Society of Crop Science (ISCS). As long as I delivered all of that with a playful smirk, you'd quickly realize I was fertilizing those accolades for my seeds of whimsy. You see, I'm a novelist. Rather than having an academic history in the Sciences, I started with a graphic design degree. Yeah. That was me doodling up the cover and several illustrations within.I parlayed that into a television production career. Over the course of the last twenty years, I advanced into animation, scripting, and then as a Producer/Director way out in the middle of the Pacific. The Sciences have held a fascination for me. During college, I had enjoyed several “topics in physics” elective classes. They didn't relate to my degree in the least, but engaged a distinctive side of the brain all the same. I felt that intellectual draw could bridge a divide between their cerebral academic world and the one we everyday folk sip Star bucks in. Not to mention, if Neil deGrasse Tyson isn't inclined to step up, then I'm happy fill that vacuum. We are laypeople. And if I can unravel these heady concepts into the realm of what's possible, then that has value for all of us. Does that make me a UFOlogist? Yes, and no. A UFOlogist is pretty much anyone who studies the topic and shares their research. Just like journalists, there isn't a UFOlogy certification. On top of that, those that seek to foster the stigma are more than pleased to slather pseudoscience over the term. In that respect, I'd not consider myself any sort of ‘ologist, more of a layperson translator. I'm seeking to advance understanding. At the same time I'd like to push back against the disinformation that over whelms the topic. And, man! This topic is full of that. As a now two-time non-fiction author, I'm curious to see if this guidebook will spark something. Should it catch fire, I have plenty more in mind to continue this shared exploration. When Producer-Director Daniel Brea's unassuming yet impactful Instagram ads for his Dream Rach Media started popping up in my feed, I knew I had to get him on the show. His message of delegating, building a team, and not trying to be a one-man band really resonated with me - it's a philosophy I've long advocated for in the commercial filmmaking world. As we dove into Daniel's journey, from his European roots to his scrappy start in LA, it was clear we were kindred spirits. We traded stories of the challenges of being a solo creative hustler, the importance of empowering a talented team, and the immense fulfillment that comes from sharing your hard-earned knowledge with others. This conversation is packed with insights that any filmmaker, whether just starting out or a seasoned vet, can learn from. Daniel's passion for mentorship and his pragmatic approach to building a sustainable creative business are truly inspiring. Grab a pen and paper, because you're about to get schooled.
