We caught up with Tom Chapman in his new role with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, DLGSC Kimberley. Tom tells us a little bit about what DLGSC does to support community organisations, particularly sport and recreation clubs, with their projects, and some of the Department's other activities. When a tenancy is terminated, you need to know about the processes and your rights for the end of the rental and moving out. Consumer laws lay down the way this must be lawfully handled – the length of notice, etc. If these processes aren't followed, there are steps to dispute an unlawful eviction. Also know what might happen (and what mustn't happen) if you don't leave the property after a lawful eviction! And if you have to leave a property and have nowhere to go? Before you launch into buying a second-hand boat and getting out on our beautiful waters, there are good things to check and know. Boat shops don't need to be registered in the same way as car dealers, but if you're buying from a boat retailer, you have the same consumer rights as buying any other goods – it must be fit for purpose, free from defects, and last a reasonable length of time. Not so for buying privately – the same consumer laws don't apply and it's buyer beware. Other tips – check the condition of both the body and motor, and also the trailer. And as always, watch out for boat scams if you're buying online and sight unseen (even better, make sure you get to test the boat out on the water). This week's topic with Consumer Protection's Tom Chapman is a general chat about terms and conditions. What do they mean? How important are they and what goods and services have them? Do you think about the terms and conditions that apply to the takeaway pizza that you buy?! Such goods do have “standard form contracts” where you can request variations to what's on offer, but mostly you take it or leave it. Contracts stating “no refunds” can't override consumer law when it comes to a major failure of goods and services, but it's still important to know what you're signing up for. Take event tickets – it's smart to know your options, for example if the date is changed. With the price of fuel at record highs, it pays to be savvy about how to find the best daily deal. Whilst prices can't be capped, Consumer Protection monitor retailers through their FuelWatch legislation and spot checks to ensure price transparency. Retailers governed by the legislation must report their daily price and must stick to that price for the whole day. Log on to the FuelWatch website (https://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/) from 2pm to compare today's/tomorrow's prices near you. If the price charged doesn't match what's on FuelWatch, then ask in case there's a mistake, or report the retailer if you have concerns (to fuelwatch@dmirs.wa.gov.au). Many of us are noticing rising prices across a whole range of goods and services. Here's some information about some of the help available – including what Consumer Protection can do and restrictions to stop price gouging on some goods. Price increases in the supply chain are hard, but now more than ever, it's important to be aware of our consumer rights to make sure we're not being misled or overcharged for other reasons. Consumer law helps ensure you get value for money. And one upside: increased prices on some goods implies a consumer rights warranty benefit! Continuing our car buying theme, this week we hear about mechanical checks to do before buying a vehicle and the differences between buying from a licensed dealer or through private sale. We also discuss different types of warranties – from “stat” warranties and new car warranties to consumer guarantees. Each cover you in different ways (or not, in the case of private sales). New car warranties can be transferred to purchasers and may last for several years, so are worth enquiring about – IF the previous owners have kept up a good service history. Dealers aren't permitted to sell vehicles that might be unroadworthy or fail an over the pits test – Consumer Protection Compliance Officers can put green stickers on them at the car yard. A green sticker is not green for go! It means the vehicle is unfit for sale and the dealer must remedy defects before selling it. A yellow sticker also means the vehicle is unroadworthy and defects must be fixed and the vehicle inspected to get the defect notice cleared. If you get a yellow sticker or have a major issue shortly after buying a car, it's worth talking to Consumer Protection for some advice around taking it back to the dealer. These protections don't apply to private purchases or sales through Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace etc. So wherever you buy your vehicle, it's worth having it checked by a mechanic beforehand to make sure it's roadworthy. And if you do have a bad experience, report it to Consumer Protection to help keep the dealers honest by doing the things they're legally required to do. We all love to feel loved, but what happens when ‘true love' turns out to be a true scam? Unfortunately scammers prey on our hopes of finding romance on online apps and websites. ‘Catfishing' is when scammers use a fake identity and photos to lure us in, developing an online relationship over many weeks or even months and declaring love yet never being willing to meet or talk on the phone or a live video call… and then the crunch – a request for money. How to avoid finding yourself on that hook? If you find yourself on a tenancy ‘blacklist' database, how do you get off it and what information is held about you? Your name must be removed 3 years after the original listing, if you pay off any debt within 3 months, or when you turn 18 (for listings under the age of 18). For court order evictions, you can apply to the court to have those orders set aside and then get your name removed from the database. You can't be listed for any situation related to domestic violence, or for debts during the COVID tenancy moratorium. But if you believe the listing is inaccurate or unfair, you can also apply to have it removed. I saw Tom give a talk back in October 2021 and knew immediately I wanted to chat to him on the show as I thought his insights would be something that you, my most-excellent listeners, would find interesting and potentially helpful.Tom started The Lions Barber Collective after losing a friend to suicide and their mission is to reduce male suicide rates by encouraging men to talk while getting a trim - an appointment that might seem superficial but which involves close contact and trust. The Lions Barber Collective's work has had a meaningful impact, Tom revealed in one interview: ‘This can be life-saving. Well I know it's life-saving - we've saved lives and I hope we continue to save others'.Tom's work highlights something that I think perhaps gets overlooked in the beauty industry and that's the value and intimacy of the relationship we have with our beauty professionals. They provide a safe space where people can often feel at ease and comfortable to open up about how they are really feeling.I was blown away by his insights and how obvious it is that spotting red flags, knowing how to speak to people who may be struggling is something that anyone working in beauty, who has close physical contact with their customers, clients and/or patients (depending on what field you work in) should be an essential part of training - in the same way Health and Safety is. Tenancy ‘blacklist' databases – what are they and what do you need to know about them? Tenancy laws set the reasons someone can be put on a tenancy database – essentially these are upon breaching a tenancy agreement, plus receiving a court eviction order or owing more money than is covered by the rental bond. Estate agents must notify you in advance if they use them, and you should also be given notice if you might be put on a database, with the reasons very clearly stated, so you can object or rectify the situation. Tom Chapman, founder of the Lions Barber collective and Model turned TV presenter, and myself discuss raising awareness about mens mental health outside of metropolitan cities, following a recent research conducted by Ironmongery Direct, in collaboration with charity Mind, which has shown that male construction workers are three times more likely to die from suicide than the average UK man, and half of UK trades people experience mental health issues due to work. Tom Chapman is not only an award winning founder of Lions Barber Collective, but also multi published author, public speaker and Internationally renowned barber. Tom Chapman may in fact be the busiest Barber in the World. After a decade working at Toni & Guy he founded his own hair studio in 2011 – Tom Chapman Hair Design, in his hometown of Torquay. He quickly realised that from inside the safe environment of his barbershop there was an opportunity to not only look after what's on his customers heads, but also what's inside their heads too. So in 2015 he founded The Lions Barber Collective, which is a group of international Barbers, that educate and raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. This life saving collective have grown into a huge global network, that trains Barbers in BarberTalk training, giving other Barbers the skills to listen and help customers with their mental health and suicide prevention. Leading this groundbreaking collective has led Tom to giving TEDx Talks and gaining coverage on National and International Television and Radio. All spreading the incredible story of The Lions Collective, saving lives along the way. And if that wasn't enough, he has even found time to film an Amazon Prime Documentary. In 2015 he founded The Lions Barber Collective. After years of cutting people's hair, Tom realised that there was an opportunity to not only look after what was on top of his customers head, but also what's inside of their head too. The Collective started as a group of international barbers that wanted to raise awareness for suicide prevention, from within the safe environment of the barber shop, where men found it a safe place to talk.But with Tom being the driving force behind it, it's developed to become much more. My guest on this episode is the wonderful barber Tom Chapman. Tom is also an author, public speaker and charity founder. He talks to me about his upbringing, playing music, training to be a hairdresser then becoming a barber. Following the sad, sudden death of a close friend he founded the super successful charity Lions Barber Collective, where they train barbers ( and now hairdressers too) to recognise mental health issues in clients and aid in the prevention of suicide.

LIONS BARBER COLLECTIVE In 2014, Tom Chapman lost a friend to suicide. In 2015, He founded the Lions Barber Collective.The charity was set up in a bid to help the prevention of suicide.His aim was to create a safe space to provide a vital source of mental health support facilitated by barbers across the country. Barbers are trained to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health, and know what to do if someone opens up to them. We talk about the importance of listening and talking to someone, and how to know when and where to refer clients for help.Tom is passionate that clients be regarded holistically; they are not just marketing tools, and their wellbeing is important. Tom shares his own experiences and we discuss how much of a barber's or hairdresser's role is already that of a therapist, that 'Familiar stranger' that we share so much with, including our thoughts, feelings and who we go through all our major life events with. In this our first episode, Nick talks to Tom Chapman, an internationally recognised barber, ambassador, educator and founder of The Lions Barber Collective charity which is dedicated to raising awareness for suicide prevention. The idea for the charity, driven through the assistance of trained Barbers came after one of Tom's friend, Alex, took his own life. Unable to properly cope with the death of his friend by finding the correct charity he could form a part of, he decided to create his own. Through the charity, Tom now trains people across the globe in supporting conversations and signposting around mental health and suicide prevention.
