It's a packed episode of Comic and TV Talk including getting started with Hoopla, the works of Deniz Camp, reading Comic Shop: the Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture, a Mike Douglas clip featuring Phil Seuling, the Death of Superman story, skimming through a 1996 issue of Comics Buyer's Guide, the Beauty on FX, thoughts on the first two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and other Geek Chat! With Season 4's seventh episode offering a break from the action, it felt like the perfect time for a smoke—as in a seriously peated Islay scotch! Geralt may be the one struggling with the actual monster this week, but Ardbeg's Wee Beastie proves formidable as well…or at least its tasting notes do, which nearly prove to be too much for Valerie. We also find we have questions for Yen and her crazy glamping tent, ponder whether Ciri and Mistle broke up and we all just missed it, and discuss the merits of sleeping with rusalkas. (It might be fun, but probably not in a swamp.) Plus, we say farewell to some great characters, agree yet again on the episode's Kaer Moron and get a bit extra with our post-credits outtake!

So if democracy is under pressure, what role do stories, culture, and imagination play in defending it?In this episode, we're joined by Alan Jenkins, civil rights lawyer, former Ford foundation program director, Harvard Law School professor, and now comic book author, for a wide ranging conversation about story making and telling as a tool for social change. From Supreme Court litigation to graphic novels, Alan Jenkins traces how law, narrative, and culture intersect when democracy is at stake. So in our conversation, we explore three big ideas I think matter a lot right now:First, why is story inseparable from power? And how law, policy, and culture work together, whether we acknowledge it or not, to shape public belief and behavior.Next, how popular culture and art have historically been used to confront authoritarianism. From Superman and Captain America to global protest movements that borrow symbol, humor, and myth. And finally, what hybrid 21st century leadership looks like and why flexibility, empathy, and imagination may be as important as specialized expertise in this moment.NOTABLE MENTIONSPeopleBill ClevelandHost of ART IS CHANGE and founder of the Center for the Study of Art & Community.Alan JenkinsHarvard Law School professor; former civil rights and DOJ lawyer; former Director of Human Rights at the Ford Foundation; co-author of 1/6: The Graphic Novel.Anthony S. If you're into comics and graphic novels, you probably know of Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud. Telgemeier rose to "first-name-only status" among middle-grade readers with her adaptations of The Babysitters Club and award-winning autobiographical graphic novels including Smile and Guts. Scott McCloud is a leading comics theorist, having spoken and written about the art form since the 1980s. In fact, Telgemeier credits McCloud's work for inspiring her when she was a teenager. Now these two leading artists come together to discuss the unique power of comics and their new graphic novel, The Cartoonists Club. Their book centers around four characters: Makayla, who is bursting with ideas but doesn't know how to make them into a story; Howard, who loves to draw but struggles to come up with ideas and his dad thinks comics are a waste of time; Lynda, who constantly draws in her sketchbook but keeps focusing on what she feels are mistakes; and Art, who simply loves being creative. Throughout the book, Telgemeier and McCloud infuse how-to advice on comics creation that, they hope, will inspire a new wave of cartoonists. They both have seen renewed enthusiasm for the genre, especially among younger readers and are teaming up to provide an entertaining and practical guide to the magic of comics storytelling. Raina Telgemeier is the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award–winning creator of Smile, Sisters, and Guts, which are all graphic memoirs based on her childhood. She is also the creator of Drama and Ghosts, and is the adapter and illustrator of the first four Baby-sitters Club graphic novels. Facing Feelings: The Art of Raina Telgemeier is a companion catalog for an exhibition held at Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. Raina lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. To learn more, visit her online at goraina.com. Scott McCloud is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art; Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels; Zot!; and The Sculptor. He is a frequent lecturer on the power of visual communication, creator of the international 24-hour comic movement, and, in 2021, was inducted into the Will Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. What if the most ordinary creatures in your home… weren't ordinary at all?In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim dives into the graphic novel retelling of The Cats of Ulthar, written by Bruce Brown—an atmospheric, beautifully crafted adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's classic short story.Lovecraft was famous for twisting everyday reality into something cosmically unsettling, and The Cats of Ulthar may be one of his most quietly disturbing tales. This graphic novel breathes new life into that century-old story, pairing eerie moral justice with striking artwork and a tone that feels both timeless and fresh. We'll talk about:• How this adaptation honors Lovecraft while making the story accessible• Why the artwork, lettering, and overall production quality stand out• The unsettling idea that cats may be more aware—and more powerful—than we give them credit for• Who this graphic novel is perfect for… and who might want to pass⚠️ Spoiler-lite discussion only ⚠️If you enjoy horror-tinged fantasy, Lovecraftian vibes, and graphic novels that linger in your mind after you've closed the cover, this one's worth your time.
Discover the inspiring story behind "Abilities," a debut graphic novel by special educator, author, and illustrator Michelle Maclean, as featured in this episode of Reading With Your Kids. Michelle joins host Jed Doherty to share her passion for empowering students with special needs and how her real-life classroom experiences inspired her to create authentic, humorous, and relatable characters. Michelle dives into the five-year journey of developing "Abilities"—a book born from her desire to help children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and social-emotional challenges see their strengths and embrace their uniqueness. Listeners will love hearing Michelle break down the personalities and talents of her four main characters, each designed to reflect diverse learning abilities, and explain why representation and humor in children's literature matter so much. The conversation also tackles important topics in special education, like how evolving curricula can limit teacher creativity and why it's essential to focus on students' passions. Michelle's story is a heartfelt reminder of the positive impact educators can have when they blend their own talents with a commitment to advocacy. Plus, hear from author Elizabeth Lizu, who discusses her early chapter book "My Little Cousin" and the Cayden's Faith Adventures series—a perfect choice for families looking to nurture empathy and faith through relatable, accessible storytelling. Does it feel like you're constantly defending your child's reading choices to a well-meaning teacher who insists graphic novels "don't count"? Are you worried that letting them "just look at the pictures" is actually holding them back? Today, we're busting the biggest myth in the dyslexia community and looking at why the graphic novel revolution is the breakthrough your struggling reader has been waiting for. In this episode, I'm sharing the research that proves these books actually pack more sophisticated vocabulary than traditional children's stories - without the "wall of text" that leads to burnout. We'll talk about why visuals are a total game-changer for comprehension and how they allow your child's brain to actually process the story instead of just exhausted decoding, plus I'm also giving you the exact scripts to use when you get pushback at school and my personal "no-fail" book list to get your child reading voluntarily. By the end of this one, you'll stop stressing over "real books" and start seeing your child finally fall in love with a story! Fortify the walls, ready your defenses and for heaven's sake, be careful where you swing that hammer—this week we're talking about Season 4's action-packed sixth episode! With Yennefer leading the charge at Montecalvo, we're paying tribute to Anya Chalotra with a bottle of Nirvana Indian Single Malt Whisky and a discussion that asks all the hard questions: Why doesn't Philippa just use magic? How did we wind up with druids? Was Vilgefortz's magical facelift worth it? (We may think so, but we doubt the mages who sacrificed themselves for it agree.) And what the heck is that gunk that's in everyone's hair anyhow? We also discuss the episode's many deaths, question what some sorceresses wear into battle and explain why a little child neglect goes a long way when it comes to Leo Bonhart.

What does it really mean when someone looks at your career and says, “You should be doing more”?In this episode of ComicLab, Brad and Dave respond to a pointed listener question that cuts straight to the bone: If they have the skills, the experience, and the ideas — why haven't they launched even more projects? The answer isn't defensive or dismissive. Instead, it becomes a clear-eyed breakdown of creative bandwidth, sustainability, work-life balance, and the invisible labor that propels up a long-term comics career. From Patreon and newsletters to storefronts, commissions, podcasts, and family responsibilities, they unpack why “doing enough” is often misunderstood from the outside — and why restraint can be a strategic choice, not a lack of ambition. The conversation then pivots to one of the trickiest problems any humor writer faces: How to judge your own work when readers don't get the joke. How many confused comments are just statistical noise—and when do they signal a real problem in execution? Brad and Dave dig into the uncomfortable middle ground between ego and humility, exploring how to listen to feedback without letting it derail your voice, and how to improve clarity without sanding off what makes your work distinctive. It's a nuanced, experience-earned discussion about ramps, chasms, audience expectations, and why “it happens to everyone” is not an excuse — but also not a death sentence. If you've ever felt pressure to produce more, or struggled to decide whether reader confusion is a warning sign or just the cost of taking creative risks, this episode offers hard-earned perspective from two cartoonists who've been navigating those exact questions for decades.TakeawaysCreative projects often take a backseat due to time constraints.Cartoonists manage a heavy workload that includes multiple projects.Balancing creativity with administrative tasks is crucial for success.Feedback from readers can help improve comic writing.Self-editing is a continuous process for comic creators.Reader confusion can indicate a need for better communication in comics.Communication is key in the artistic process. We hope you brought your appetite…for drunken discussion! We're back with our first episode of 2026, where we're diving into Season 4's celebration of camping out (both literally and figuratively) and baring your soul over a bowl of fish soup. Accompanied by a bottle of True Story Finished Bourbon, we share some surprisingly strong opinions about the episode's infamous musical interlude, declare our undying love for random nonsense, and explain how while he may no longer drink blood, Regis clearly has no problem drinking Marvel's milkshake. We also debate whether sick = sexy when it comes to Jaskier, formally declare that Milva's the smartest person in the room and actually agree on a Kaer Moron for once. It's a tasty, tantalizing talk about the most mouthwatering episode of the season that's guaranteed to leave you hungry for everything to come. (Note to self: In the future, don't write these episode descriptions before you've had dinner.)

DHPOD Episode 2: Listening Now (body awareness practice and guided meditation)If you're just starting to listen to your body, it's gonna hurt. Why? Because your body has been trying to get your attention, crying out in pain or numbing out in helplessness. The first thing you'll hear, when you start listening, might be aaaaaaaallll that pain at once. It takes strength and patience to face that pain, and hear it, and feel it, and keep coming back. So this is a practice to build your strength, to start with acknowledging the pain, and to not shame yourself for how hard it all is.Join me for a gentle, guided meditation to connect with your body, tune in to what it needs, and tend to those needs as best you can. This practice is all about expanding your awareness and beginning to cultivate a kinder relationship with your body.As with any Drawing Health practice, get comfortable, take what feels good and supportive for you, and leave what doesn't. Reflection questions:- What is one small action you can take, in this moment, to tend to your physical needs?- How does it feel to tune in to your body's signals? - Did you notice any changes—physical, mental, emotional—while listening to this meditation, or after?Get comfortable. Really, really cozy. Don't hold back on comfort now — it's your first resource of strength to face the discomfort of feeling.=If you loved listening to this episode, or if it stirred something new in you, I'd love you to leave us a review. Sharing your experiences is a gift to yourself and others, and definitely me. I love learning how my offerings land in other people, and it really helps the show to find those who need it. If you want to connect with myself and others who are practicing Drawing Health in community every Saturday, just go to drawinghealth.com and sign up for the weekly live class. This is the Drawing Health podcast, a resource for your well-being and inspiration. I'm offering you ways to connect your creativity and your body, so that your health is never at odds with your art. Every Sunday, a new episode, alternating between graphic medicine interviews and guided audio practices. Listen, subscribe, and most of all: give feedback. Tell your stories, and experiences, by leaving a review or comment or sending an email. What I say doesn't matter nearly as much as what you hear, feel, and learn about yourself. Your story matters, and sharing is a gift! =Music acknowledgementOur theme music is Magic Hours by Aaron Comeau made for the Main St. Music Library. At the beginning of the year, cartoonists Dave Kellett and Brad Guigar made their predictions for the coming year — and set goals for themselves. Now, as the year comes to a close, it's the brutally honest follow-up episode where they grade themselves — and sometimes discover that Past-Brad and Past-Dave were wildly optimistic. Or deluded. Or both.2025 PREDICTIONSDAVE: Business planning for cartoonists is gonna be filled with a lot of anxiety. Trump will be a chaos agent.BRAD: the “winners” of 2025 will be the cartoonists and businesses that help people *deal* with anxiety.DAVE: Bluesky will be at 50M users by the end of the year (we were at 23M when he made that prediction)BRAD: Substack: will gain in prominence. They're going to have a user base in the same league as Patreon, Kickstarter, or Twitter.DAVE: “We will all be playing reactionary, whack-a-mole with our life decisions in the first two years of the Trump administration.”BRAD: AI will start to gain a foothold among writers and artists, as an assistant to their writing or their process or their brainstorming. Dave concurred.
