The Father's Midrash is where a group of dads gather once a week to read, interpret and discuss how the Bible impacts the role of fatherhood.
Discuss topics like: Two are better than one, seeking out friendship, companionship in marriage, being known in relationships, David and Jonathan, integrating the development of deep relationships, pursuing God’s dreams, assuming you know God’s will, the tragedy of not seeing your dream come to fruition, reaping what you sow.
Discuss topics like: Solomon as a role model, is progress an illusion?, remembering the sacrifice of others, theology behind Ecclesiastes, is everything really vanity?, is everything meaningless?, thinking about eternity, where our meaning comes from.
Discuss topics like: Do not forsake your friends, contrasting neighbors to brothers, the importance of geographical proximity, asking friends for favors, be in the position of need, a father is someone who investigates, examining your actions as a father in your children’s actions, rebuking friends, knowing facts before a rebuke, jealousy between friends, jealousy is greater than wrath, not stirring up jealousy.
Discuss topics like: Personality vs. Character, having a seat of honor, honoring others, self promotion, building your kids up without making them prideful, uncovering what God has hidden, giving God the glory, paying attention to what the Bible pays attention to, the culture of the Kingdom, do you really believe the Bible is the word of God, having a Bible reading plan, Bible study vs. relationship with God, the balance between discipline and religion, the difference between “I have to” and “I want to."
Discuss topics like- not toiling for wealth, how wealth can get away from you, enjoying your work, having a conversation with a fool, interacting with foolish people, judging if someone is a fool, the difference between fatherless and orphan, how to help the fatherless, how to save fathers, disciplining your children, physical discipline for your child, motive for disciplining your kids, raising your kids in your ways, watching injustice happen.
Discuss topics like: Being a knowledgeable zealot, the importance of knowing before acting, raging against the Lord because of folly, how to tell when someone is a false witness, punishment for false witnesses, God cares about justice, the ancient idea of court systems, parenting with justice, making up for doing wrong, difference between poverty and wealth, inheriting wealth from your father, taking care of the poor, how revenge can be subtle, disciplining your children, the spirit of man.
Discuss topics like: Not everyone who has something to say is wise, being tested by God, being open to rebuke, only rebuking the wise, protecting friendship by not spreading offense, raising your son to not be a fool, not spreading rumors, engaging in debate and examination, a wife is a gift from the Lord, children are an amazing blessing, feeling called to be someone’s close friend, friends who are closer than brothers.
Discuss topics like: not being defensive, having a soft heart, having the right word for every season, being timely, God’s glory and power, honoring humility, the vulnerability of man’s heart before the Lord, everything God sees, the root of pride, justice, free will, the idea of an author.
Discuss topics like: the rich man vs the poor man, judging those you don’t know, the dangers of a lack of resources, investing into experiences, fulfilling desires you’ve had for a long time, concentrating wisdom, physical discipline, loving your child, training your child to respect your voice and authority, how to know you’re really longing for God, being aware of your blind spot, setting up people in your life to call you out, being generous to the poor, taking care of the poor.
Discuss topics like: The ways of wisdom, simplicity vs complexity, avoiding folly, who the mockers are, what mockery is, rebuking people, building a household, when are you ready to expand your family?
Discuss topics like: the adulterous woman, how to stay away from the forbidden woman, parallel between the adulterous woman and the forbidden fruit, the curse of pornography, staying faithful to your wife, what identity do you act and work out of, prioritizing your family over work, how adultery is the symptom of a deeper family belief issue, destiny to govern.
Discuss topics like: the balance between rest and work, working by self-motivation, the adulterous woman, lust, controlling your desires, healthy habits for married couples, avoiding sexual sin, listening to your wife, financial wisdom, going into debt, thinking about adultery or divorce generationally, training and guiding sons, the importance of the father role and a multigenerational perspective.
Discuss topics like: fear of the Lord, God’s character, how fear ultimately creates peace, the character of wisdom, wisdom vs. knowledge, peer-based wisdom, righteousness and justice, not being cowardly. A midrash is simply a discussion around a certain part of scripture.
