Wake up and smell the feels. Fern Sutherland and distinguished guests dissect life as we think we know it over the most important meal of the day.
Stanley is not homeless, he lives in a parking building in Vancouver, thank you very much. He loves his city and he loves life and if you want to learn about empathy and self awareness then let Stanley tell you about his world. Let's eat a weird NASA breakfast from McDonalds, charge our electronic devices, take advantage of some free ketchup sachets and get a little Nietzschean. His song choice: We Want To - New Young Pony Club
Alison Wright is proof that when you feel like something has finally become utterly neveragainish you CAN just blow that popsicle stand and go do what you really want. Often we don't get the hell out of a situation because we don't have a nice secure new place to go lined up. Instead we let our unhappiness grow into something that becomes 'tolerable' because it's 'safe' and the misery becomes familiar. Well guess what?! You don't have to know where you are going. YOU JUST NEED TO KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO LEAVE. Your job suck? Fuck it off! Relationship sucking your soul dry? Get the hell out of there! Something new will materialise! Because it has to!* *This is just my opinion. I am not culpable for your decisions. LOL. But good luck tho. Alison Wright is a diamond. She's beautiful and raw and earthy but look out or she'll bloody cut you to smithereens with her multifaceted honesty. She's an accomplished actress making interesting choices and embodying complex characters. But perhaps she wouldn't be doing the things she is doing today if she hadn't made the decision to figure out just who the hell she is.
"I'm gunna vom, I'm gunna shit and vom at the same time. I felt so uncomfortable in my skin..." Once upon a time Frankie Adams fundamentally doubted herself. On her first day as Bobbie Draper in massive fancy US TV show The Expanse, little Frankie from NZ walked on to set feeling horrifyingly ill prepared, illegitimate and undeserving. Four seasons in the can, she now celebrates and embraces being able to freely express such unthinkable utterances as; "I AM GOOD ENOUGH TO BE HERE!" and even more inconceivably; "Hey! I am doing A REALLY GOOD JOB!" How dare she? Just who the hell does this cocky upstart think she is? And not completely unrelated...how is her mum such incontrovertible MAJESTY? Well let's eat some regrettably overcooked eggs and have a listen to find out. Frankie's song choice: I'm Still Standing by Elton John Other music: My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) by Phil Collins Jingle: Claire Cowan Follow Frankie: Twitter Instagram Facebook
Natalie once had a panic attack whilst frantically jogging around Ikea. Let's hit the vape and drink green smoothies while discussing the finer points of mental health. Writer and actor, Natalie Medlock, is about to debut her latest stage play, a tragic comedy inspired by her own lived experience with anxiety and depression. She wrote Near Death Experience while house-sitting two schnauzers in Melbourne. She was very alone, highly medicated and mental. It's a real exploration of her existential crisis: What is the point in life? Her song choice: Cry Baby by Janis Joplin Other Music: Movin on Up by M People
Hey hey let's talk about feeling profoundly uncomfortable! And alone! If Sequoia Schmidt was an element she would be fire. She moved from NZ to the States as a 16 year old and shut the door on a disconnected childhood where she felt misunderstood and abandoned. The new life she built in L.A revolved around high rise offices and high heels, the antithesis of her small hometown of Napier, and things would have continued on this way had her father and brother not been killed in an avalanche while climbing K2. This episode is taught me that life is like biking the length of NZ solo, you have to figure what you actually need in your pack, and what you can no longer carry because it's slowing you down. It's about forgiving others which often happens in tandem with forgiving yourself. It's also about wearing one pair of undies for a month and shitting into a resealable bag. So let's eat 2 pieces of toast with assorted toppings and cheers to that.
LIFE IS NOT BLACK OR WHITE. "LIFE IS EXCEPTIONALLY GREY." And I ain't talkin' bout no mommy porn/light bondage grey. In this episode we convene over a breakfast of "some kind of bread thing" and coke to discuss ostracisation and tribalism! There's a speech impediment. There's Roseanne. There's a new feature, "Parasite Corner," where we discuss the latest and greatest in parasite news from around the globe. There's the sound of rain continually falling outside- sorry if it's annoying. This C*ntinental Breakfast features honorary lady, Sam Brooks; playwright, journalist, stutterer and TV and Gaming Editor at The Spinoff Regular c*ntributor Tamar Münch is also back bringing that salty jewish realness.
Holly Bradfield has the soul of a wandering gypsy but the mind of an accounts auditor. That's why her hair's so big, it's full of perfectionism. We eat a high end peanut butter on a classic brand of toast bread and discuss working on the most luxurious yachts in the world, for the most demanding billionaires on the planet. And what happens when ya lose ya damn mind doing it. Her song choice is "Bamboleo" by Gypsy Kings
This is the first instalment of what I hope will be LADIEEZ gettin togetha on the regs to talk about whatever the hell we like. First up, my queen Tamar Münch (publicist, yogi, parasite enthusiast) and heaven on this earth, (actress/maker) Rachel House. If you give 0 f*cks about the Oscars, skip to to the 44 minute mark where we talk about freelancing, saying NO, and happiness.
"I'd rather hang out with a bunch of dogs sometimes" Dean O'Gorman is an actor, photographer, painter and cool person. We talk about his work, toxic masculinity and war whilst enjoying overpriced avocado on toast washed down with a cup of chemex. The book Dean refers to about Liberalism is Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari The track he chose is Seven Wonders by Fleetwood Mac.
