A researcher says all she can do is laugh about the Government ordering more vapes for those wanting to quit smoking. Health New Zealand's been providing vape kits to smokers for almost a year as part of a pilot programme, initially ordering three thousand kits. Newstalk ZB has revealed it's ordering more, including flavours like cinnamon and blueberry. Auckland University researcher Kelly Burrowes told Mike Hosking the Government seems to be promoting and supporting vaping as a healthier product. A Clare TD says the Government has been caught napping on regulating vapes and e-cigarettes. According to the Institute of Public Health, 18% of 15-16 year-olds are current users. The state is currently moving to ban the advertising of e-cigarettes and restrict packaging design, but Sinn Féin is calling for an anti-vaping programme to be established, along with legislation to outlaw disposable and single-use products. The Party's Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Shannon Deputy McGettigan says there's serious problems.

Three months since disposable vapes were banned from shelves some schools say they're still grappling with students vaping and a researcher studying the long-term health effects is calling for vapes to be made prescription only. In June the goverment's ban on disposable vapes and strict advertising rules kicked in, meaning specialist vape stores must keep the products hidden from outside view. Non-specialist retailers aren't allowed to display the products at all. The Vaping Industry Association supports the ban on disposable vapes but says new advertising rules could be turning ex-smokers back to cigarettes. Louise Ternouth reports.

There's some new data on teenagers and vaping that deserves our attention. Published in the journal Pediatrics, the data looks at trends in vaping behaviors among our eighth, tenth, and twelfth graders. Near daily vaping was admitted by one-point-seven percent of eighth graders, four-point-two percent of tenth graders, and almost eight percent of twelfth graders. When asked why they vape, the three top reasons are these: to relax and relieve stress was number one, cited by over seventy percent of those kids who vaped daily. Second on the list was experimentation, and coming in at third was vaping to relieve boredom. Other reasons cited include the taste, feeling good, convenience, and to have a good time. Parents, be aware that there are numerous health issues related to vaping. It is not safe. Take the time to raise your awareness of the consequences of vaping, warn your kids, and direct them to the Lord who promises to minister to them in their stress and anxiety.

Local vape shop owners say that the flavored tobacco ban Mayor Johnston signed into law last year represents an existential threat to their businesses and a major blow to the City of Denver's sales tax revenues. But will that be enough to convince Denver voters to repeal the ban this November? Producer Paul Karolyi sits down with two local vape shop owners — Kristen Hensel of Rusty's Vape and Smoke Shop and Philip Guerin of Myxed Up Creations — to talk about how kids get access to vapes, the Zyn plant being built in Aurora, and what the flavored tobacco ban means for their businesses. Paul talked about the Geek Bar website, this CU Anschutz report on Denver's flavored tobacco ban, the surge in nitrous oxide, aka “whippets,” in Denver, and Gov. Jared Polis' position on a statewide flavored tobacco ban, which he said he opposed in 2022. He also cited reporting on the repeal campaign's 17,000 signatures and $328,000 raised.
