In this episode, we went interstellar with our intercontinental ballistic missiles to talk about nuclear weapons in two science fiction shows: The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica. This week, Alan, Quinta and Scott were joined by special guest, Lawfare chief operating officer David Priess! They sat down to discuss:“In Byelorussia, Everything . . . Everything is Just Awful”: In an effort to hit back over sanctions, the authoritarian regime in Belarus is deliberately admitting refugees only to channel them across its borders with the European Union. How should Europe respond?“Taking ‘Tourist Trap' Too Literally”: In recent years, foreign governments have taken an unprecedented number of U.S. nationals as effective hostages. Is this a failure of U.S. deterrence? Or something else entirely?“Space: The Littered Frontier”: A Russian test of an anti-satellite weapon has scattered refuse across outer space, threatening the safety of astronauts and potentially complicating space travel in the future. For object lessons, Scott made a PSA about Lawfare's upcoming online info session for law students interested in becoming student contributors, taking place this Thursday! In this episode, Senior Fellow in Defense Studies Peter Garretson interviews Theresa Hitchens, space pundit, NATO and nuclear war expert, former UN diplomat, and now space reporter for Breaking Defense. They discuss her essay, "How ‘The Expanse' Is A Cautionary Tale For Real World Space Commercialization," exploring its parallels to current commercial space development and regulation, and parallels to history. Next, they address the utility of science fiction to strategy, and why strategists should read scifi. They cover the benefits space brings to understanding our reality, to economic benefits today, to future economic benefits from space resources, the human need as a migratory species to expand and explore and to ensure survival. They outline the importance of sustaining space as a resource for human betterment; avoiding conflict that may be unnecessary over resources, dampening tensions and misunderstandings among nation states. Additionally, they detail the PRC's space weapons program and the utility of norms. They also discuss Space Force, 'warfighting,' military space doctrine, nuclear deterrence, SDI, norms and commercial regulation. Finally, they close by talking about opportunities before the National Space Council and Space Force / USSPACECOM leadership to address current problems as well as shape the far future. IndieRE : Independent Radio Exchange Production : Radio Študent Ljubljana, SL In this edition of Indie-Re we are visiting Slovenia's alternative and underground scene and various albums released in the past couple of months. From afrobeat collective Nesesari Kakalulu's newest album, P'Jays and Kavasutra, two bands mixing together elements of jazz and rock. Then Zajtrk, a folk chanson duo, will follow, and the Trite Sound label with their most recent compilation of electronic music, simply titled 8, to the promising death metal band Siderean with their debut LP. Nesesari Kakalulu and Zajtrk's music will be followed by a short interview with their respective members. Let us explore some of the interesting new music from the Slovenian alternative and underground scene. We will start with Nesesari Kakalulu, psychedelic funk and afrobeat band, followed by a short interview with Timi Vremec, the band's bass player. We are also presenting a song of theirs, titled Srce teme, from their third album Pramada, which was released on the 26th of July. P'Jays, formerly known as Pijammies, are a jazz band, consisting of 5 members: Tomaž Gajšt on trumpet, Gaj Bostič on drums, Blaž Avsenik on synthesiser, Mark Žakelj and Jošt Lampret on electric guitars, with Jošt also providing bass lines. They are a fairly young band, but most of them are studying music, which is reflected in the quality of their sound, consisting of elements of jazz, funk and rock. Now let's listen to the song Free Spirit from their freshly released second album titled Raconteurs, released by SonicTribe. If you feel like the name Kavasutra sounds PG-13, then the cover art of their debut album, titled Zlati stojan, lajf in Celje, confirms that feeling. Kavasutra is a five member collective from Šempeter pri Gorici, with Ajk Vremec and Anton Lorenzutti, both on vocals and electric guitar, Žiga Ipavec on drums and Timi Vremec on bass guitar. They play a humorous derivative of jazz rock, and we are going to listen to the song Globalno segrevanje. The folk duo Zajtrk consists of Laura Krajnc on vocals, tambourine and shaking eggs and Sven Horvat on vocals and guitar. They released their first album in 2018, and on 10th of July they self-released their second LP called Žetev, for which they invited a bunch of friends to play instruments on a couple of songs. They take inspiration from chanson, folk, pop and acoustic music, layered with playful, witty lyrics. They do not take themselves too seriously and are taking a fresh approach to storytelling in folk music. They are gonna tell us more themselves in a short interview, and we will listen to two of their songs: Ti me pelješ and Maček v žaklju. Somewhere in the coastal area of Slovenia, there is an exciting label that releases electronic music, and it is called TRITE Sound. Championed by the electronic producer .čunfa, the label presented a compilation that demonstrates the span of its musicians. It is titled 8, born split in two: it has a ligher and a darker side. First, we are going to listen to the song Faking Jazz Together by nu-disco band YGT, formerly Your Gay Thoughts, from the light side of 8. Then, it will be followed by a song from the dark side, Dweller's Dub by the promising music producer Rochwald. And last but definitely not least, we are saying goodbye with some death metal provided by a band called Siderean, enjoy their song Coalescing into the Expanse from the freshly released LP. It is titled Lost on Void's Horizon, and it was released by Edged Circle Productions. Prepare yourself for a cosmic journey into the scary unknown with Siderean. FEATURED ARTISTS/PRODUCERS/LABELS: Nesesari kakalulu (self-released), P'Jays (SonicTribe), Kavasutra (KUD Zvočni izviri), Zajtrk (self-released), Trite Sound, Siderean (Edged Circle Productions) Prepared by Ula Kranjc Kušlan and Marko Mi...

Here is a visual representation of the Kardashev scale and the amount of energy for each step: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale#/media/File:Consommations_énergétiques_des_trois_types_de_l'échelle_de_Kardashev.svg] Why is there a scale? It's hard to have an intelligent conversation about something if you don't have a way to think critically about it. Classification schemes is one way of creating a frame of critical thinking. You have to create criteria for the different levels. How did we get the Kardashev scale? Russian astrophysicist, Nikolai Kardashev, created the scale in a paper he published in 1964 called, “Transmission of Information by Extraterrestrial Civilizations”. The scale measures a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use. What is the scale? Type 1 through 3. Frequently referred to as K1 through K3. A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization, has the capability to use all of the energy of its planet. A technological achievement that a K1 society would likely have is weather control. An example of this in movies would be any science fiction movie that shows Earth United by one government, or close cooperation, such as the movie Interstellar and 2010 Space Odyssey. References: the movie Interstellar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_(film) Stanley Kubrick Space Odyssey: * 2001 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/ * 2010 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/ A type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization, can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system. Technological achievements that K2 civilizations would likely have is the ability to terraform and build megastructures. An example of a near type 2 is the TV series The Expanse. Most space operas fall into this category such as any Star Trek. I wanted to place Star Wars here to but since Sith lords frequently entertain ruling the galaxy, they must be nearing K3 contrary to Star Trek, where the galaxy is still a vast place that takes lifetimes to span even with warp drive. Another delightful noir/cyberpunk book series is the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard K Morgan. The first of which, Altered Carbon, was made into a Netflix movie. References: The Expanse: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/ Star Trek serieses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek Richard K Morgan's Takeshi Kovacks book series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Kovacs A type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization, can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy. Movies like this do casually travel the wide reaches of the galaxy and the galaxy is as well known as any of us today see the Earth as well known and prospected by various nation states. The most famous example of this in movies would be, as I've already said, is Star Wars. More choices are Jupiter Ascending, as well as Valarian and the City of a Thousand Planets. In literature we have books like Vernor Vinges Zones of Thought, and Asimov's The Foundation. The Vinge book showcases civilizations up and down the kardashev model and so I highly recommend that to those who have a love for alien civilizations and interest in socio-economic development. Apple TV has produced and is streaming The Foundation as a multi series TV show, and it is very enjoyable and well acted, so go check it out. A feature length movie script that Hal Dace and I wrote Miss Wisenheimer and the Aliens falls into the K3 category as well but with the unique angle that despite having the ability to casually travel the galaxy like in Star Wars, there are no aliens so the film focuses on that mystery. I'll put a link to the short film version in the show notes. The short film version of the feature length movie, by the way, won an award at a Belgium film festival. References: the movie Star Wars: https://www.starwars.com/films the movie Jupiter Ascending: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1617661/ the movie Valarian and the City of a Thousand Planets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_and_the_City_of_a_Thousand_Planets Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought novel series: https://www.goodreads.com/series/52585-zones-of-thought Isaac Asimov's The Foundation book series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series the TV series The Foundation: https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/what-to-watch/ct-ent-review-foundation-apple-tv-plus-20210924-3rzd3lon7rbrhidtrlpv5pl4t4-story.html Is the Kardashev scale any good? As you've heard on the show, it does help to quickly categorize levels of civilizations. A common criticism is that the jump from K2 to K3, from controlling the energy of a solar system to the ability to control all the energy of all the suns of a galaxy is too big of a step. But that said, it did actually do the job when analyzing science fiction movies. Another criticism is what about beyond K3? This brings us to the next topic. Typical adds to the scale At the front of the scale, it's typical to use 0 for civilizations that are just starting out or have yet to master energy generation. At the other end of the scale, it's common to add a level 4 beings who can control or use the entire universe. Because seriously, why would a Sith stop at making only a galaxy of beings unhappy when she could put an entire universe into a bad funk? Adding level 5 brings gives us a category for those who control collections of universes, or said another way, multiple dimensions. For those who have seen Valarian, remember the extraction scene that the main character, Valarian was involved with required them to go to another dimension. And for those who have seen the Thor movies, this gives us a catagory for Asgardians. References: Miss Wisenheimer: Short film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJpyfhkfm3QFacebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MissWisenheimer/TV interview about the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EItnd8bXhdkMiss Wisenheimer and the Aliens film page: https://www.facebook.com/MissWisenheimer Valarian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_and_the_City_of_a_Thousand_Planets Jupiter Ascending: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter_Ascending What are the dangers of advancing on the scale? There are some books that follow characters through the changes that happen to a civilization as they climb the Kardashev scale. Charles Stross' Accellerando describes a progression from K0 to K2. In Italian, accelerando means "speeding up" and is used as a tempo marking in musical notation. In Stross' novel, it refers to the accelerating rate at which humanity in general, and/or the novel's characters, head towards the technological singularity. This story focuses mostly on human culture. To the author's credit, he does all of this in one book. Accellerando: Vernor Vinges Zones of Thought novels, shows civilizations climbing to high parts of the scale, and many falling to lower parts of the scale. And like The Foundation, there is a group who is interested in helping to prevent a fall or helping to shorten the dark ages that follow after a fall. A Fire Upon the Deep is a 1992 science fiction novel by American writer Vernor Vinge. It is a space opera involving superhuman intelligences, aliens, variable physics, space battles, love, betrayal, genocide, and a communication medium resembling Usenet. A Fire Upon the Deep won the Hugo Award in 1993, sharing it with Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. This series contains a lot of wonderfully thought out and dramatic alien culture. Zones of Thought: Wikipedia entry about Kardashev: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale These Issac Arthur videos make a great companion video to this podcast episode. We're taking our phase pistols to town this week as we follow "North Star"!Podcaster and cosplayer Thad Hait returns to the show to discuss an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise that takes aim at discrimination and xenophobia. When in the Expanse, Archer and crew find a planet inhabited by Earthlings descended from old West settlers. But before they can solve the mystery of their existence, they'll have to stop a impending race war and run the bad guys out of town! The events of September 11, 2001, forever changed our world, not just in the political sphere but also in the field of entertainment. We can't ever know what Enterprise might have been without 9/11, but in the wake of the tragedy, Trek did what it was designed to do and sought to reframe our contemporary conflicts and prejudices through the lens of sci-fi allegory. The third season of Enterprise was mostly focused on the crew's efforts to avenge the victims of the Xindi attack, but it still took the time to tell a story about the kind of unfocused rage and racism that was present in the real world. On this episode, we talk about how Enterprise handled the politics of its time, the franchise's long association with allegory, the way in which stories about war ground genre characters, the fundamental connections between westerns and Star Trek, the freedom Enterprise might have had in syndication, and why it's a great time to be a sci-fi fan.We also discuss returning to cons, making your Trek panel a Supernatural panel, Trek and spy stories, waiting for Prime Lorca, the wester sci-fi feel of The Mandalorian, a Trek cop series, a wind-free planet, Archer gets plugged, some James Bond talk, and Space Sears!I want my Backula back!Follow Thad on Twitter and listen to his new podcast, Licence to Spiel!https://twitter.com/Tyranicushttps://twitter.com/podspielLearn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingRide with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/WVvCHVWqzfBuy us a horse on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

This week on Episode 524 of Priority One: New York Comic Con is ready to Trek Out; the community rallies behind Wilson Cruz; Star Trek Online updates its minimum system requirements; mobile games cross to desktop; and we review Lower Decks' “Where Pleasant Fountains Lie”–but not before we chat with Cryptic Studios's Content Creator Ryon and Environment Artist Gianna! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Trekking Out the Big Apple By Elio Lleo Convention season is in full swing and New York Comic Con is next. Starting October 7th and ending October 10th, this four day event usually has stuff for everyone! Unique to this year's presentation is hybrid participation: not only are organizers reducing the total number of attendees, you can also purchase a virtual ticket that will give you access to some of the panels right from the comfort of your own home. But what's so special about NYCC? As of right now, Paramount+ is slated to present at least two panels: on Saturday, October 9th at 12:45pm the cast and producers of Star Trek: Discovery take the Empire Stage. Then on Sunday, October 10, Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere its first episode along with a panel. Image: ViacomCBS/Nickelodeon, via TrekCore. But that's not all–join the Roddenberry Podcast Network as we present a panel titled “Star Trek's Guide to Community.” I'll be there along with Kennedy and Sue from Women at Warp! That's happening Saturday, Oct 9th at 2:15pm. There's also a Hallmark presentation with new Trek ornaments, a virtual only panel with the folks behind the new Star Trek Magazine, and even Bill Shatner will be there on Thurs, October 7th.  Wilson Cruz Harassed During Star Trek Day By Elio Lleo When it comes to communities, even Star Trek's can be incredibly divisive. The majority of the time, it's about NuTrek vs older Trek, who the better first officer is, or which ship is cooler. However, there are times when things can get dark and people start to show their true colors–like one fan who was offered the privilege of attending the Star Trek Day celebrations in person. Long story short, at one point during the event, while Wilson Cruz was on stage, someone in the audience yield out a homophobic slur. According to reports, no one did anything about it. The guest was not removed nor have they been identified (yet). With incredible grace and patience, Wilson continued on and later took to Twitter to address the matter. https://twitter.com/wcruz73/status/1436333680880934927 Although he may not have wanted to draw so much attention to the matter, we want to take a moment to remind you–our listeners–that tolerance for the bigoted has its limits. When you see something, say something. Learn ways on how to be the best ally you can be for people who are marginalized on a daily basis. If you're on social media and someone goes on a hate-filled rant, step up. It's the inaction of those with the means to stand up to injustices that empower those who want to watch the world burn. [If you don't think this belongs in Trek, then there's the airlock. Help yourself.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via StarTrek.com IP Theft, the Sincerest Form of Flattery By Cat Hough On Monday, we were treated to the big uniform reveal by General Jay Raymond, Chief of Space Operations for Space Force who tweeted, "Every winning team needs a uniform!.I'm excited to share the new look with you today." And to no one's surprise, the Twitterverse immediately noticed some striking similarities to some other uniforms that we are quite familiar with. They were described by one person as "a blend of the Star Trek Enterprise dress uniform, but with the Mirror Universe diagonal."  https://twitter.com/SpaceForceCSO/status/1440323962697752590 [I am voluntarily putting this into my own shownotes for your edification, dear listener. You owe me.–Ed.] Josh Weinstein, a veteran writer for The Simpsons and Futurama, said the uniform reminded him of the ridiculously tight outfits worn by Zapp Brannigan; Movies in Focus hopped on the satirical bandwagon with the image of an Imperial Star Destroyer officer from the original Star Wars trilogy. "These new Space Force uniforms are looking great," jokes the caption. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Reuben Klamer, the designer of the original Starfleet phaser rifle for the original series of Star Trek, passed away at the age of 99, according to the Toy Association. Klamer also designed props for other shows, including a gun for the hit 1960s series The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  https://youtu.be/oWGNDoXG9R8 STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds PSA: She Canna Take Any More, Cap'ns! By Thomas Reynolds To every thing there is a season–and in Cryptic's opinion, the season for Windows 7 is long past. Starting February 15, 2022, anyone still using the 10-year-old OS (seriously, not even Microsoft supports it anymore) won't be able to patch or log into STO and Neverwinter. Only Windows 8 and 10 (with the superior 64-bit intellect) will have a home on the final frontier. DirectX 10 support is also getting ejected like a spent warp core on February 15th, with both games requiring Feature Level 11 or higher. That means your computer needs to have one of the following video card chipsets to play: NVidia GeForce GTX 400 or better ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better Given all the fun and excitement of buying graphics cards these days, if your current card isn't up to the task...well, godspeed. [Pictured: my rig next February.–Ed.] Image: ViacomCBS, via KVNF Public Radio. Aux2Bat Gets Boimed Out By Thomas Reynolds The aqueduct, the magnetic compass, the Aux2Bat. All of these simple technologies have withstood the test of time, but the last may be the most miraculous. Needing only three Technician doffs and one boff ability at minimum, the Aux2Bat ship build is easy to assemble, trivial to fly, and still keeps your bridge officers ready for whatever space wizardry you demand of them. Sure, it hasn't been the meta in a sehlat's age, but you know what? Aux2Bat does the job, it does it pretty well, and that's pretty much all we ask...until now. Ever drop a Gravity Well, and notice your Tyken's Rift is now off-limits for 15 seconds? That's the Shared Category Cooldown kicking in, forcing you to pace yourself rather than let everything rip at once. When Cryptic first released the Boimler Effect trait, it provided a 2.5% percent chance of resetting every bridge officer ability to its Shared Category Cooldown, whenever you used a non-specialist boff ability. Great in theory, but one-in-forty odds just aren't worth a 200 Lobi investment. Yeah, that's was also our reaction. Image: ViacomCBS, via TrekZone.de So Cryptic did a little tweaking, like you do, and made it a 17.5% percent proc chance instead. As STO streamer @AugmentedDG declared on Twitter, “Boimler Effect is now as good as Aux2Bat...for cooldown reduction.” Bold words, to be sure, but there's also a fairly convincing clip of him keeping eight of his escort's twelve boff abilities concurrently running like an overambitious plate spinner. Trek out the tweet, scrape together that Lobi, and give your boffs more buffer time than they can handle. https://twitter.com/AugmentedDG/status/1438707179268284425 Is there in Screen Accuracy No Beauty? By Thomas Reynolds One of Trek cosplay's hallmarks is its hair-splitting fidelity to what's seen on screen, even when the creators themselves don't quite pull it off. Combine that tendency with STO's promise of personal immersion, and it's no surprise that some players want their captain's threads to look “correct.” To help make that a little easier, Cryptic released official in-game color guides for both the newly-available Lower Decks Starfleet jacket, and their original Khitomer uniform creation. However, rapturous Space Barbie enthusiasts should make sure they're using the second released Khitomer guide, as the first one had incorrect pant color codes. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1439020385572245509 The Sally Ride, the Ross, and You By Shane Hoover If you were a fan of the Star Trek Adventures web series “Shield of Tomorrow” or “Clear Skies”, you're already familiar with the dangers and wonders of the Shackleton Expanse. If you weren't, then be prepared for deadly spatial phenomena, ancient alien technologies, first contact with new species and lots of boldly going. It's all there in Modiphius Entertainment's newest STA sourcebook, the Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide. The new sourcebook is available for preorder at $60 now and is expected to ship in December 2021. This is your tabletop gaming crew's chance to follow in the warp trails of the U.S.S. Sally Ride and the U.S.S. Ross. Adventure into a nearly uncharted region of space beyond Federation, Klingon and Romulan borders.  Image: Modiphius Entertainment. The new material includes five new playable alien species for STA including Orions. It also includes NPCs from Starbase 364 and around the Expanse, as well as stats for “hero” and NPC vessels. This sourcebook does require a copy of the Star Trek Adventures core rulebook, which is provided in PDF form with your order. The Ar-mod-a Returns By Thomas Reynolds Maybe 2000 feels like a long time ago to you, maybe it doesn't. Either way, the Star Trek: Armada and Armada II RTS games that came out then still hold a place in certain PC players' hearts. So much, in fact, that the Stellar Parallax modding group has finally released what Activision would not: Star Trek: Armada III. Starting as a one-person passion project back in 2012, Armada III is a full-conversion mod for 2012's Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. Stellar Parallax's devoted faithful can now command the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Borg, or Cardassian Union at the beginning of the Dominion War. See, Kurtzman? You can have more than one kind of ship in a fleet. Image: Stellar Parallax. But really, how much demand is there for a nine-year-old game mod, following up on a twenty-year-old series? After its September 10th release, Armada III is the 51st most-popular mod on the ModDB site, out of over 46,000 entries across hundreds of games–so we'd say “a lot.” [Update: #21 as of publication. Damn.–Ed.] Quick Star Trek Gaming News Roundup A few weeks back we mentioned that the mobile game Star Trek Fleet Command was beta testing a desktop client for Windows. Well, they're out of beta and it's now available for download, with special perks being offered when you log in via desktop! Game maker WizKids announced a new combo-building game titled “Star Trek Missions” –according to their announcement, “your goal is to assemble the highest-scoring combos possible by drawing cards from the Galaxy deck, the Mission deck, or the discard area.” It'll be available February 2022, but you can pre-order now.
