Foundry Chocolate in New Zealand release only a single inclusion bar each year, but this annual release has become one of the hottest tickets in craft chocolate. Each fall (for the Northern Hemisphere—spring for NZ), they release a bar infused with a different whisky from artisan New Zealand distillery Thomson Whisky. Each year's release is a unique flavor concept, and co-founder David Herrick and his team spend time throughout the year perfecting each annual batch. In this nerdy, deep-dive conversation, David Herrick and host David Nilsen discuss the planning stages for each bar, walk through each annual release since 2021, and talk about the details of Foundry's process for infusing whisky into these bars. The Davids also talk about Foundry's origin story, the meaning behind their name, the thoughtful of their packaging, and what keeps them excited and curious. You can learn more about Foundry on their website, or follow them on Instagram. You can listen to episodes with New Zealander Luke Owen Smith here and here.1:00 - Introduction3:40 - Start of Interview: Foundry's backstory13:35 - The meaning of the name “Foundry”17:30 - Whisky and the Thompson Distillery21:50 - Whisky bar releases 2021-202542:45 - Whisky infusion process53:40 - Release events and enthusiasm54:55 - 2026 R&D57:50- What he's currently excited about1:06:55 - Packaging and the story Foundry is telling1:13:55 - End of interview1:20:40 - End of episodeGuest:David Herrick, along with his wife Janelle, are co-founders of Foundry Chocolate, a New Zealand-based bean-to-bar craft chocolate maker whose globally award-winning single origin, two ingredient bars make the flavor possible from single origins their absolute focus. Matthew Ridge is one of New Zealand's most recognisable sporting figures - All Blacks captain, NRL star, television personality. But behind the swagger and the highlights reel is a story most people have never heard.Originally released in 2024 and one of our most popular episodes, we're bringing this one back because it deserves to be heard again.Ridgey sits down with Steve and Seamus to tell it all. At 16, he was wrongfully convicted of aggravated robbery - three High Court trials, a 14-year sentence hanging over his head, and a sports career that nearly never happened. He talks about growing up without his father, finding mental toughness through tennis, and the moment he got a voicemail from Graham Lowe asking if he wanted to play rugby league for Manly. He opens up about the NRL years, the TV relationship with Marc Ellis - and he talks honestly about his meth use, functioning as an addict while the cameras rolled, and the moment he looked at a photo of himself and saw no light in his eyes. This is Matthew Ridge like you've never heard him before.Between Two Beers is proudly brought to you by One New Zealand. We believe that One NZ connects New Zealand, while Between Two Beers connects New Zealanders. And together, we are NZ's most trusted connection platform.Steve and Seamus are proud to be dressed by Barkers Clothing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For 20 years, Darren Shand was the most powerful person in All Blacks rugby that nobody knew about. As Team Manager across four Rugby World Cups - including the back-to-back title wins of 2011 and 2015 - Shand sat above the coaches, managed the operation, and helped build the cultural architecture of the most successful international rugby team in history. He worked alongside Sir Graham Henry, Sir Steve Hansen, Sir Wayne Smith, Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, and some of the greatest players to ever pull on the black jersey. He talks about the 2004 wake-up call that forced the entire culture to change. The private battles with depression. The end of his marriage. The moment a former Crusaders teammate came to his house to tell him he was fired. He shares stories that have never been made public - including a stunning incident before the 2015 Rugby World Cup final that nearly ended his campaign entirely. And he gives his most honest assessment yet of what happened to the All Blacks after he left - and why Ian Foster never really had a chance.Between Two Beers is proudly brought to you by One New Zealand. Brian and Liz, are back in New Zealand. They have rented their rural lifestyle property for another year so they can continue their nomadic lifestyle around the world. The new tenants take over in ten days. But before this can happen, there are many, many, many (tons actually) of things to attend to. Both in and out of the house. Ten hard, sloggy emotional days later, we are on our way back to the airport to fly away from NZ. But we couldn't possibly leave without sharing exactly what the experience has been like. So we pulled over to record this podcast. It's a bit weird. It's dark, and we can hardly stay awake. But we're here. Just about. This is what it looks like when you have an effing huge mountain to climb and rely on the endless love and support you have for each other. With all our love and gratitude from inside a dark car somewhere on The Forgotten World Highway in Taranaki, New Zealand Liz and Brian x Links mentioned in the show:
Robert Young brought Jim's Building Maintenance and Jim's Handyman to New Zealand five years ago. His teams are now the market leader nationally, booked months out in Wellington and Christchurch while independent builders are calling him asking for work.Robert joins Joel on the Jim's podcast to make the case that property maintenance is the most recession-proof trade business in New Zealand right now, and that owning a customer base of around 1,000 people is the only real protection a tradie has against AI disruption and a flat economy. He has been through five NZ recessions and the pattern is the same each time. The conversation unpacks how the Jim's flat-fee model works versus percentage-based franchise systems that quietly turn franchisees into subcontractors. Robert breaks down how lead fees operate, why the maximum lead fee in NZ is $35, why some franchisees stop taking leads after 18 months, how territory and customer ownership actually work, and why his franchisees charge close to double the rates of independent builders. He also explains the pay-for-work guarantee and why it is rarely claimed. If you are a qualified builder or a seriously handy tradie in New Zealand thinking about your next move, this one is worth your time.
Leonard S. Hong arrived in New Zealand at the age of three. His story is one of choosing the right parents, hard work, and applied effort to succeed. At age 29 he has a Master of Science and has completed a Prime Ministerial Scholarship to Asia. He's worked in Perth and Singapore, and speaks both English and Korean fluently. He is a valuable citizen. But why are he and so many of his friends angry and leaving NZ? Leonard S. Hong in conversation, discusses New Zealand's economic malaise, the brain drain to Australia, Singapore's development model, meritocracy, and the future facing young New Zealanders. And as always, we checked the Mailroom with Mrs Producer, and concluded with climate matters. Why are we hooked on negative news? Luke Kemeys of Keep the Change joins us to dissect the media "doom loop" and how the algorithmic bias towards negativity impacts money decisions. We discuss the psychological impact of hitting your first $100,000 milestone and why compounding returns feel completely different after you cross that barrier. Luke explains how he’d reverse-engineer a 25-year financial plan, how to overcome action paralysis, and whether the goals of the FIRE movement are really attainable—or desirable. We also discuss the gap between Kiwi business and the wider Asia-Pacific region when it comes to adopting technology — and how a new generation is acquiring business from retiring baby boomers and using digital upgrades to rapidly increase profitability. Save 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKIPEDIA at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comThis week on the podcast, Mikki speaks to Dr Matt Nagra, a naturopathic doctor and researcher known for his evidence-based perspective on nutrition, with a particular focus on plant-based diets and chronic disease. In this episode, the conversation tackles one of the most debated topics in nutrition right now: protein. Matt helps unpack why protein has become such a focal point, how to interpret the current evidence, and what outcomes actually matter when we're talking about intake and health. They explore the long-standing protein RDA and what it was designed to represent. The discussion then moves into protein quality, addressing common claims around plant versus animal protein, and why mechanistic research doesn't always align with long-term health outcomes. Matt also provides important context around dietary patterns and chronic disease risk, helping to separate the role of protein itself from the broader way people eat. They finish with a dive into choline, covering its role in the body, how it interacts with other nutrients like folate and betaine, and what this means for people following predominantly plant-based diets. It's a thoughtful, nuanced conversation that cuts through the noise and brings clarity to some of the biggest questions in modern nutrition.Dr Matt Nagra is a naturopathic doctor who graduated from the Boucher Institute after completing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He holds additional board certifications in prescriptive authority, immunisations, advanced injection therapies, intravenous therapies, and acupuncture. Using an evidence-based approach, he creates individualised treatment protocols tailored to each patient's health goals and lifestyle. He has a particular passion for plant-based and vegan nutrition, physical medicine, and chronic disease treatment. With additional training in nutrition, he holds a Plant-Based Nutrition Certification from Cornell University and the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has also authored multiple articles. What's the real strategy a top Jim's Cleaning franchisee used to build their business? Not ads. Not leaflets. The unserviced leads report. In this episode Janille, head trainer for Jim's Cleaning New Zealand, sits down with Joel Kleber to break down how she and her husband went from bookkeeper and construction project manager to one of the top Jim's Cleaning franchises in NZ. Within the first few weeks they reduced their incoming leads and started cherrypicking from the unserviced leads report instead. Her husband refreshed it 50 times a day. Mega Monday Drive this week! Laika Rountree joined us for Stage Direction. This fortnight, she was laughing, she was crying, she was touched--suffice to say, there was a bunch of good stuff to see. She also played a snippet of her interview with Suzy Eddie Izzard. What a treat! Professor Emeritus Peter Lineham's phone was broken… but then it wasn't. A miracle, perhaps?! This week's That The Spirit topic: 100 years of the Bahá'í Faith in New Zealand. We also heard a sneak peek of Oto and Jaycee's interview with Mei Semones, who'll be here in Auckland in June. Aaaaaand, we had the pleasure of speaking to Stephen Heard from Clap Clap Riot! They've got the band back together, released a new single, and are embarking on their first NZ tour in seven years! Erica Stanford: NCEA, immigration and "anti-Māori" criticism Minister for education and immigration Erica Stanford joins Jack Tame to discuss the new scheme replacing NCEA, facing down public criticism over removing school boards' Treaty of Waitangi obligations, and why the National Party is toughening its rhetoric on immigration. She also pushed back on education ministry plans to remove ESOL funding for year 0 and year 1 students in the second half of this year, saying the ministry had “got ahead of itself” and that wouldn't now be happening. Stanford also touched on the government's pause in rolling out a social media ban for under-16s, saying there was a legislative programme still under way, and that the National Party was still committed to moving something on age verification. Where's the policy? Chris Hipkins on Labour's election plans Less than six months out from a general election, New Zealand's highest-polling party has only revealed a handful of policies. On big issues like the cost of living, fuel security and immigration, Chris Hipkins says the Labour Party will be sharing their vision for the country after Budget Day. Chris Hipkins joins Jack Tame for his first appearance of 2026 to discuss his flagship education policy of the previous government, Fees Free - now set to be cancelled, with a price tag to date of $2 billion. He also considers whether Labour in New Zealand can take any lessons from Sir Keir Starmer's turmoil in the UK. “Oligopoly”: How a lack of competition hurts public pockets OECD economist David Haugh joins Q+A with Jack Tame to talk about a major new report detailing the weak state of competition in the New Zealand economy, and why ordinary New Zealanders are being economically hurt by the structure of key markets. His report also critiqued the government's LNG plans, and he responds to an assertion from PM Chris Luxon that those sections of the report are “a load of rubbish”. The “global Goliath” and risk of worldwide societal collapse Cambridge researcher of existential risks Luke Kemp talks to Q+A about the threats facing the continued survival of humanity, why wealth inequality is such a major risk factor, and how in such a globalised world, a collapse would be much more difficult to survive than previous societal collapses. Kemp's book is Goliath's Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse, and he's been in New Zealand as part of the Auckland Writers Festival. Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

Don walks through the historical context behind early guidelines, including where things may have gone off track, particularly around the treatment of fat, cholesterol, and protein-rich foods. From there, the discussion moves into the science. If you've ever yelled at a ref… this episode might change your perspective. Or probably not as its a regular occurance amongst rugby fans. In this episode, we sit down with Caleb Greaves, a referee with 12 years of experience across five different associations and a current official in the North Harbour Premier Men's competition Auckland, NZ. Caleb shares stories from the field, how referees manage chaos in real time, and why it might be one of the toughest jobs in sport. We also unpack his viral approach to recruiting new referees, including the now-infamous “do something dumb until someone signs up” challenge, + how the North Harbour Referees Instagram page is changing the perception of officiating. In the second half, we shift into Super Rugby — breaking down the state of officiating, the chaos at the breakdown, TMO influence, and how players are getting smarter at pushing the limits of the game. Our Bonus Point segment is a new segment we like to call “Whistle Blower” - Some quick fire questions and sure to be a doozy

From Klotho protein restoring cognitive function in head injury patients to mitochondrial peptides that can rescue dying cells — this conversation covers the cutting edge of what's actually possible right now. About the Guests Dr. Alexander Grinberg MD is a physician, immunologist, and peptide therapy specialist practicing in San Francisco. He holds a fellowship from the Moscow Immunology Institute and consults internationally on advanced customised longevity protocols. He runs Infinity Epigenetics and teaches physicians in high-end integration of peptides, regenerative medicine, and genetic therapies. Dr. Dave Jenkins is a New Zealand-trained physician with 40+ years of clinical experience specialising in metabolic and neurological health. He is Bredesen Protocol (ReCODE) trained and runs a longevity clinic in Bali. He co-developed a Type 2 Diabetes reversal program now being published and reviewed by NZ's top diabetic specialists. In this episode Why Klotho protein may be one of the most powerful longevity interventions available — and the different delivery forms (protein injection, peptide fragments, gene therapy) Dr. Dave's clinical Klotho results: a doctor with chronic head injury returning to practice, and his own memory score jumping from the 66th to the 97th percentile in six weeks How mitochondrial peptides (MOTS-c, SS-31, Humanin) work and why dosing wrong can be dangerous — especially in autoimmune and cancer history cases The case for micro-dosing peptides and why skin testing should come first Personalised medicine taken to its extreme: harvesting a patient's own cells, expanding them in culture, and running accelerated longevity and cancer resilience tests before any intervention Why peptide purity and sourcing is a serious safety concern — and what the clinic will do differently The vision for a Pacific Island longevity clinic offering therapies unavailable in the US, EU, NZ, or Australia — with a social impact mission to address metabolic disease in local populations Off-label repurposed drugs for cancer (metformin, ivermectin, doxycycline, mebendazole) and why the regulatory environment matters How custom peptides designed from a patient's own genome could replace pharmaceuticals entirely Resources mentioned Infinity Epigenetics — infinityepigenetics.com Dr. Dave Jenkins —
