We've been celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, for our final "classic episode" of 2025, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with "All I Want for Christmas" co-writer Walter Afanasieff. Happy holidays and thanks for a great year of looking back together as we continue to look toward the future!ABOUT WALTER AFANASIEFFThirteen-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner Walter Afanasieff is best known for his collaborative songwriting and production partnership with Mariah Carey that yielded hit singles such as “Can't Let Go,” “Dreamlover,” “Hero,” “Without You,” “Anytime You Need a Friend,” “Butterfly,” “My All,” and “One Sweet Day,” a duet with Boyz II Men that was named ASCAP Song of the Year. It hit #1 in December of 1995 and stayed there for sixteen weeks—a record that remained unbroken for more than two decades. Their “All I Want for Christmas is You” was released in 1994 and has since become a holiday standard. It hit #1 on Billboard's pop chart for the first time in 2019, giving Walter and Mariah the world record for the longest period of time between a song's original release and its arrival at the top of the chart. In addition to his success with Carey, Afanasieff carved out a formidable reputation as a go-to producer of hit movie songs. After co-writing and co-producing the Gladys Knight single “License to Kill” from the James Bond film of the same name, he went on to produce “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, “Even If My Heart Would Break” from The Bodyguard, and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, which became the best-selling single in the world for 1998. Additionally he produced “Some Day” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Academy Award nominated “Go the Distance” from Hercules.Other hits from the Walter Afanasieff songbook include “Can You Stop the Rain,” a #1 R&B single for Peabo Bryson that earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song, “Missing You Now,” a #1 Adult Contemporary hit for Michael Bolton, “If You Go Away,” a Top 20 single for New Kids on the Block, Savage Garden's #1 pop single “I Knew I Loved You,” and Ricky Martin's massive global hit “She Bangs.”The long list of additional artists Walter has written and produced music for includes Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, Destiny's Child, Kenny G, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, Marc Anthony, Babyface, and Josh Groban. This week we keep things intentionally low-effort and high-chaos by drafting the Billboard year-end #1 songs from 1980 through 1999. We each build a ten-song playlist from a shared pool, knowing that once a song is picked, it's gone forever. Along the way we uncover timeless masterpieces, generational blind spots, slow-dance trauma, and more than a few baffling chart decisions. By the end, it's less about “best songs of all time” and more about what pop culture we survived — and what it says about the decades that made us.Cold Open & Life UpdatesEden survives Iowa weather whiplash, including snowmelt, wind advisories, and dogs who refuse to come inside. We check in on end-of-year fatigue, weddings on the horizon, and the general desire to just get to January. What We've Been Checking OutEden scores a surprise manga haul via Reddit, including:Kase-san and… — a quiet, funny, wholesome romance that desperately wants its characters to communicate.Chainsmoker Cat — gross, chaotic, and deeply committed to depicting the world's worst anthropomorphic cat girl.Continued time in Where Winds Meet, including discovering that joining the “hot evil people” sect requires in-game marriage… followed by divorce.Peter continues slowly working through The Three-Body Problem and Gödel, Escher, Bach.A brief dive into habit-building via the new Atomic Habits workbook.Music check-in includes Archspire's new single “Carrion Ladder” and the eternal joy of Apple Music Replay actually getting things right.Gaming includes Ball Pit, Megabonk, and the looming temptation of finally committing to Baldur's Gate 3.The Main Event: Billboard #1 Draft (1980–1999)We draft songs snake-style, locking each other out as we go.Early rounds are stacked with undeniable classics:Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You”Prince's “When Doves Cry”Blondie's “Call Me”Cher's “Believe”George Michael emerges as an '80s powerhouse with multiple entries. The generational divide shows up fast:Peter leans heavily '80s.Eden lives firmly in the '90s (for better and worse). We acknowledge slow-dance staples that were emotionally formative whether we liked them or not.The middle rounds reveal just how strange pop history can be when viewed year-by-year.By the later picks, we're openly throwing ourselves on grenades:The Macarena is drafted out of mercy.Multiple songs are chosen purely because something has to be.We question how certain cultural touchstones (My Heart Will Go On, Aaliyah, Bone Thugs) somehow missed the top spot in their years.Big TakeawaysBillboard #1 does not mean “best song.”The '80s age better than the '90s in pop memory (and fashion).Nostalgia is selective, and pop charts are cruel.Drafting music is a great way to discover what you genuinely love — and what you merely survived.
In this episode of Sync Music Matters, I'm joined by composer and music producer Simon Franglen for a fascinating conversation spanning pop production and film score. Simon reflects on his early career writing jingles and programming the Synclavier for Trevor Horn, an experience that placed him at the intersection of music and emerging technology. That foundation led to high-level session gigs working on music for artists including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion – culminating in his role producing “My Heart Will Go On” for Titanic. His transition into film scoring began with Dances With Wolves, working alongside John Barry and then Alan Sylvestri and James Horner. Experience that shaped his approach to melody and storytelling. We discuss how those lessons continue to inform his work today. The conversation then turns to Simon's latest project, Avatar: Fire and Ash, where he recorded new themes and created original musical instruments to help define the film's sonic world. With a piano in the room, Simon plays excerpts from the score, offering rare insight into his creative process. Simon talks about the film's songs including “Dream as One” by Miley Cyrus and “The Future and The Past” sung by Zoë Saldaña and how they support the narrative. We also explore the decline of strong thematic composition in modern cinema and why Hollywood has shifted away from it. Finally, Simon offers his perspective on AI and the music industry, addressing both the risks and the enduring importance of human creativity. Listen to the Avatar: Fire and Ash Score on Spotify

Co-written and produced with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Grammy-winning composer Simon Franglen (the man behind Céline Dion's “My Heart Will Go On”), the track releases as a single November 14, 2025, ahead of the full soundtrack on December 12.Miley calls the collaboration “musical medicine,” saying the song's themes of unity, healing, and rising from ashes mirror her own life after fire destroyed her home. The official Avatar teaser already teases the lyric “Even through the ashes in the sky / Baby, when we dream we dream as one.”Analytic Dreamz dives into the full context: returning cast (Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet), new addition Oona Chaplin, the Sully family's next chapter, and why this Mark Ronson-powered anthem is being positioned as the next generational cinematic moment. I 1998 thacaigh Dr Patrick Hillery don Shoot The Scattering. Bhí sé seo tionscnamh ag ceiliúradh daoine ón chontae a bhí timpeall an domhain. Bhí daoine ag iarradh leabhar a táirge chun onóir a thabhairt chuig na daoine ón chontae. Sin Celine Dion le My Heart Will Go On – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1998. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2000 chuaigh pianó John Lennon ar taispeáint sa Mhúsaem Beatles Story I Learpholl. Chum John Lennon an t-amhrán Imagine ar an phianó sin. It's that time of year when Walter Afanasieff takes over the charts. Walter is the writer and producer of “All I Want for Christmas Is You”—the biggest Christmas song of all time—and he also produced “My Heart Will Go On.” But that's just the tip of the iceberg. From writing and producing with Mariah Carey to working with Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Barbra Streisand, Walter has been behind some of the most unforgettable songs in music history. He co-wrote dozens of hits with Mariah Carey, including “Hero” and “One Sweet Day”—the record-breaking duet with Boyz II Men that held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks. And let's not forget “My Heart Will Go On”—yes, the Titanic theme with Celine Dion—which earned him a GRAMMY for Record of the Year. Walter also won the Producer of the Year GRAMMY in 2000.This year, he's nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media for his song "Love Will Survive" with Barbra Streisand from the miniseries The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Walter co-wrote the piece with Hans Zimmer, Charlie Midnight, and Kara Talve, and produced it alongside Peter Asher. In this episode, we dig into Walter's incredible journey through the music world. From his early days working with Narada Michael Walden (fun fact: Walter played synths on “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) to collaborating with some of the biggest voices in history, Walter is an absolute legend. He's also a dear friend, and I'm so excited to share our conversation with you today. Let's go!
In this week's Big Up, Let Down segment, we've got some real talk and wild stories. First, an unsung hero in Boulder, Colorado, swapped out typical traffic signs for some blunt advice, like one reminding drivers to “Get Off Your Damn Phone” and another that says, “Don't Kill Any Kids Today.” Then, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Explorer of the Seas got a little too adventurous while sailing from Barcelona to Miami. After hitting a sudden storm off Tenerife, the ship tilted 14 degrees, sending furniture sliding and glass shattering—while Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On blared through the speakers, adding an eerie soundtrack to the chaos. A woman on TikTok posted a hack that's supposed to make pizza healthier. Right after it's delivered, flip the box upside down and drop it on the floor. (It makes a bunch of the grease stick to the top of the box. But it might also ruin your pizza.) A Royal Caribbean cruise ship got hit by a huge gust of wind and tilted to one side for several minutes. On top of that, passengers are saying that "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic" happened to be playing when it happened. Here is one of those passengers. Jay Leno was spotted Monday night in Beverly Hills with an eyepatch and bruising on the side of his face. TMZ asked him what happened. It looks pretty bad, but listen how with Jay, the show MUST go on. Is this anything?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Céline Dion becomes inescapable in the mid-nineties with her hit song from the Titanic soundtrack, My Heart Will Go On. She achieves a unique level of global fame, earning fans from Jamaica to Iraq. But her ubiquity will also inspire a backlash in North America.
We're belting it out with a special Big Belters Edition of Joel Jivin'! And we've got Marney McQueen in the house—she's playing Celine Dion in Titanique, now showing at Sydney's Grand Electric theatre. Imagine Titanic told by Celine herself! Marney gives us a taste of her incredible version of My Heart Will Go On… and let's just say, the competition heats up!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
