University residential colleges, and all-male colleges in particular, have been criticised as having no place in the 21st Century. In this episode, Rowan talks to Steve Foley, the head of St Leo's College, UQ's last remaining all-male college, about how he's acted to change the culture of the college. Steve says he's called out behaviours that he thinks are inappropriate or inconsistent with the values of the organisation, despite resistance from some pockets of the organisation pressuring him not to change the college. Maddy talks with a former St Leo's resident about what he thinks of the changes, and where the residents themselves have had struggles with Steve.
In this episode, Maddy, Ngugi and Rowan discuss the lockdown and the emergence of ProctorU as the invigilators of UQ exams.
This week we speak to Pat Condren (Labor) and Kath Angus (Greens), two candidates in the race against the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. As well as the two candidates' plans for uni students (and UQ students in particular), we discuss Pat's plans to stop the rorts in City Council, and Kath's plans to bring our city to life with fair and democratic communities. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner was unavailable for understandable reasons (at the time of publication, we are very much in the throes of a global pandemic). From everyone at Semper and Flourish, we hope you're staying safe and sane in quarantine!
Can't get enough of Drew? Here some follow ups from his interview and his attempts to recite lines from the Joker
Rowan interviews anti-ccp separatist, activist and University of Queensland senator Drew Pavlou.
In this episode Rowan catches up with councillor for the actually independent ticket "A Better Experience" about their critiques and vision of the union. We then discuss their ideas, electoral prospects and whether there is a way forward for independent tickets like ABE.
Rowan catches up with activist and student action presidential candidate Oula Shihan to talk about what a student action Union would look like.
Midway through week 1 of the campaign we catch with Amy Sienkiewicz-Grob the presidential candidate for the collection of independent student formerly known as Empower/Together. Rowan, Maddy and Sam discuss Amy, Empower's policies and the way forward for their ticket.
It's now campaign week for the 2019 University of Queensland election. We sit down with Ethan Van Roo, the presidential candidate for Real. We also discuss the new electoral tribunal ruling to disqualify Empower.
The different factions in the University of Queensland student elections. Why did focus split? Who are empower and real? And something is happening with the electoral tribunal regarding ticket names.
Georgia commits the impeachable offenses she’s accused of on twitch live stream, Council subpoenas the executive and its UQ co-conspirators, and our latest PollerCoaster 2020 shows that the physiol is a top-tier battleground booth. Then Director of Union Governance Zachary Thomas talks to Maddy about the rules committee's next steps on impeachment, and Drew talks to Rowan about the new Semper Media podcast he’s hosting, Hoj Dissected.
