Dialogue is used for more than just simple speech, it moves the story forward, it indicates what characters want, what they feel, what they want others to feel and more. But it's used a bit differently across different media. Comics have their own particular ways of doing things and it's quite interesting! We thank Banes for coming up with this topic! In pure prose the world is all relayed in text so dialogue is king there, characters can talk and talk forever and everything can be relayed through their speech if the author wants. Radio plays are much like prose, but actors help out with their performances, SFX has a role, and time is a factor. Plays are a different thing, settings, scenes and props are limited so a LOT of work has to be taken up by the dialogue, but it's all governed by linear, limited time, so once something is said it's gone, you can't linger on it or go back over it, so it has to do its job in the moment (this isn't a disadvantage though), but the actors can do all the work of showing expressions, tone, emotions, humour, physicality and many other things. Movies, TV, and games are different again, they're also limited by time (though you can go back if you like), the actors can do a lot of the work and massive amounts of work can be done with the visuals. Lastly we have comics where like prose they are not limited by linear time, and like film visuals can do a huge amount of the work. Dialogue in comics can work very well when there's a symbiosis between the visuals and what is written in the speech bubbles. Like film you can offload a lot of work of the dialogue to the visuals. When I do a page I write out what the text should be but I don't finalise it till I have the page art done, though I know what the characters need to say and how the story should go. When the page is done then I whittle down the text to make it work with the visuals, so a character might just say a single word, but because of the art it can be like a full paragraph of meaning. When I work with a pre-written script like in Bottomless waitress or The Key of Dreams I can't change the dialogue so I make sure the way I draw the scene and the characters delivering it enhances what's said and even helps it say much much more. I also letter things in such a way that it tweaks the delivery of the dialogue, so the characters are “acting” it out in a specific way, like giving each sentence its own bubble and placing them in specific ways, closer together or massively spread out, making them different sizes, colours, or shapes etc. How do you approach dialogue in comics? And how do you prefer to see it as a reader? Next week we're tacking “endings”, mainly when fans or IP owners demand an author get around to ending their work and suggest other to take over that role. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:13-21; Ephesians 2:1-7When Emma came into the living room, tears were falling from Mom's eyes onto her lap. Dad sat next to her with a hand on her shoulder. "It's Grandma," he told Emma. "She died in the hospital this morning." Emma stared out the window. With Grandma gone, who'd come visit every month? Who'd cook her favorite foods, or go on bike rides and picnics with her?A few days later Mom, Dad, and Emma made the long drive to the funeral. Emma tried to listen during the service. The pastor said, "Ephesians 2:6-7 tells us that God raises us up with Jesus--He gives us spiritual life as well as the promise of physical resurrection when He comes again--so that we will forever show 'the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.'"After the service Mom didn't seem as sad while she visited with her sisters. Emma felt like something was missing, and her heart ached. On their drive home, they stopped at a restaurant. Emma saw something strange on the menu. She asked, "What do they mean by 'bottomless cup of coffee?' That sounds messy." Dad laughed a little, and even Mom smiled. "That means they'll keep filling your cup as long as you want more coffee," Dad explained.Mom added, "It's like when Jesus fed the five thousand. He fed people until they were full. Then He gave even more. There's no end to how much He gives us and does for us."Dad said, "It's that way for your grandma now. God will spend all eternity showing kindness to her in heaven.""But what about us, Dad? I don't feel full. I feel kind of empty.""We lost a great treasure in Grandma, and that can make us feel poor instead of rich. But God will never run out of mercy and kindness. He's rich in both of those--and generous."Mom nodded. "God gave us the greatest treasure of all when He gave His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to save us so we could be with Him now and forever. Jesus promises to be with us when we feel sad and give us comfort and peace."Emma smiled. "It's like a bottomless cup of His love." –Laura RoeslerHow About You?Do you miss someone who was dear to you? The word dear means valuable, such as treasure or riches. When you lose someone, it can make you feel poor instead of rich. But God is rich in mercy. He knows how to care for those who are dear to us, and He knows how to comfort us whenever we miss them. Trust Him to show you the riches of His kindness and mercy as you grieve.Today's Key Verse:The same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For decades, paranormal researchers have heard tales of a strange anomaly in the hills of central Washington - a hole so deep that it devours everything thrown into it, and which seems to possess supernatural powers. In the late 1990s, a man named Mel Waters came forward, claiming to own the land upon which the bottomless pit resides. But after going public, he found himself at the centre of a conspiracy involving top branches of the US government that ultimately led to his disappearance. Was it all a hoax, or is there more to the curious case of Mel's Hole? On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss Starbucks' new uniform policy, which calls for neutral-color clothing that lets the brand's signature green apron stand out. Employees aren't happy about the change, but could it be another smart step in the turnaround process kicked off by new CEO Brian Niccol? Then they discuss Red Robin's new Bottomless Burger Pass, a limited promotion that, for just $20, gives customers a burger every day for a month. The pass was so in demand that it crashed Red Robin's website, and Sam and Alicia talk about how this could be a smart marketing strategy. They also talk about Applebee's, which last year did its own pass — a Date Night Pass — that was equally as in demand but couldn't spur enough momentum for the chain to enjoy sales growth. Now Applebee's has lost CMO Joel Yashinsky, who left for the same position at Burger King U.S. and Canada. So what's next for Applebee's? Senior editor Joanna Fantozzi joins for this week's extra serving to talk about Technomic's Top 500, which illustrates some interesting trends among the biggest chains in the U.S. Finally, we share an interview between senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn and Walk-On's senior director of culinary John Hagen. The pudding family started out as a pretty ok family but an un BEAR able name. Well as pudding sis, dad, mom, son was in Maryland. But not the Maryland you know. A different Maryland far away in a place unknown. This was the Maryland NOBODY could handle. Bearly nobody went there. Nobody was brave enough to live there. The the pudding family had no other choice. Every other part of baR.E 16 would take them. They went to barell. They threw rocks at them. What about pokelans? No, the towns folk nearly cooked them for harvest. This would happen everywhere except for Maryland wher it basically is hell. Fire. Bottomless pits out of nowhere. Like a no man's land. And they had no other option. There was no food. And the family had to resort to.. cannibalism! Well they would let burning people die before they did and besides they're already cooked in fire so it won't feel bad for them. After a few years of this weird life style, they took a MASSIVE liking to it and even got their hands on human world items! The dad to a shot gun and the son got a knife! They would become killers. But they had to share of course, but they end up finding their own weapons. After this this they kept their weapons but baR. E 16 was very unstable and could collapse at moments so the residents of the planet had to think quickly before the planet imploded. So the others had to eat others and save what's left of their belongings to escape using a rocket the dad built. As everyone saw the rocket, they tried to grab on to escape. As the pudding family climbed in. As many people tried to get on but it sent off into space. Leaving their home world behind. They looked back in disbelief and landed in a place a lot like earth but in a different galaxy called orthit. And they had phones, cars and all the essential items. Even thing we on earth are still figuring out his to make! So they had nothing to worry about. As they stole items from shops nearby, they found a hidden shelter. So they quickly hid. So after they decided to try use the goods they stole. And pudding son used his phone to do stuff, he was quickly learning the basics and learned apps. And he had found a kids app called CHOMP and quickly recognised the face. it was PUDDING SON? (at the time before baR.E 16 was destroyed, he was really popular there for being brave enough to survive a full year on Maryland and other universes pick this up and liked pudding son for his braveness not knowing their true side. Also pudding son found a box, randomly on the floor to use, he quickly learned how to use it, and what it was. It was a Human keeper. It was simple enough, like Pokemon. It sucks up any matter, DNA, any Human like form it can take! So he used it, and grew his army, stronger and stronger! (More on that soon) But pudding son did NOT take this as a good gesture, so he found out where they were located and found the workers at the company. And got very mad. He pulled his knife out and sliced nearly everyone. So one worker was his behind a chair and pudding son saw them and said "WHAT DUMB IDEA DID YOU GET TO MAKE THIS?" and he charged at the worker who jumped out the way as he flew into the screen. And was trapped! And had no way out. So he met the other cartoonist creations in the game as they all greeted them but he wasn't having it. So he decided to stab them untill they would bleed out and jump in theater body, somehow duplicate himself and make the previous owner of the body worship pudding son shouting his name ever so often, Untill he sucks them up into the cube, they follow protecting him untill they die. He would do this Coutless times to all the people in the game. Untill he reached the end and had enough clones to reach to the top of the boarder of the game and saw the computer screen. He finally crawled out. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
