Show Notes: Jason Furman discusses his journey in economics. He shares his experience teaching Act 10, a course that has evolved over the years, using ideas from psychology and economics that are still relevant today. Jason also discusses his time at the Kennedy School, where his current role is Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors. It was while at the Kennedy School that he was recruited to work in government. He initially didn't want to go into public policy or Washington, but eventually discovered his passion for it. In 2008, he was asked by David Axelrod to move to Chicago for the Obama campaign. He met with Obama and discussed his view of the economy and the issues being addressed in the campaign.  Working for the Obama Campaign Jason talks about participating in the campaign, which was an amazing experience, as economists typically do economic policy on a campaign, discussing what will happen next year when they become president. The economy was falling apart, and Jason was able to use his knowledge and experience to help address the issue. In the midst of a financial crisis, Obama decided to support George Bushes' idea of a "bank bail out" to save the banks. This campaign became almost as much like governing as campaigning, with Obama meeting with Bush's treasury secretary, Treasury staff, and the Fed. A small team worked together to devise solutions to save the banks, revive the economy, and rescue the auto industry.  Jason talks about the market collapsing and how Obama worked on various aspects of the crisis, including the fiscal response, the Recovery Act, the Affordable Care Act, the fiscal cliff, tax reform, technology policy, infrastructure, China, and climate change. The experience was both exciting and challenging, as markets were collapsing and the future of the economy was uncertain. Exporting Crude and Environmental Concerns Jason shares an example of where analysis matters. The United States faced a ban on exporting crude oil due to environmental concerns. The analysis, led by a climate change expert, found that the carbon content of US oil was lower than that of Canadian oil, which led to a ban that hurt American jobs and pushed the world towards higher carbon oil. Jason and his team put forward their analysis and the President, who was interested in the idea, met with his environmental and political advisors to discuss it. Despite some disagreements, the President agreed to sign an executive order to implement the idea. However, political concerns arose, and the White House decided to negotiate with Republicans in Congress to make the oil export concession. Six months later, Republicans extended tax credits for wind and solar, which the White House considered a good policy. This case highlights the importance of analysis and the combination of analysis and politics in a decision-making process. Climate Policies and The Financial Crisis Jason discusses two decisions that he believes were crucial. The first was for climate change cap and trade, which would have limited carbon emissions and set up tradable permits. The House passed the bill with the support of 55 senators, but it was not passed due to the filibuster. The second was immigration reform, which would have had a stronger border, expanded legal immigration, and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The financial crisis hit, and Jason explains that Congress had a fixed amount of money for tax credits, states, and unemployment insurance. He talks about Congress spend and automatic aid systems.  Advice for Trump Administration Jason shares his advice for the incoming president. He states that the economy is in good shape and should not be messed up by big tariffs, immigration, mass expulsions, budget deficit increases, or interference with the Federal Reserve. Jason also discusses mainstream democratic economic policies or beliefs that he would disagree with or push back against. He tries to be unvarnished in his views in real time, and has tried to be honest about his opinions during the presidential campaign. He agrees with a decent fraction of the Democratic agenda, but there is a tendency to ignore trade-offs and the need to decide how best to use finite budget resources. The conversation turns to the debate on tariffs on electric vehicles.  The Oval Office Environment Jason shares his experience in the Oval Office. He talks about President Obama's approach to policy discussions, debates, and political advisors.  He mentions that the President was also good at compartmentalizing, which is important when dealing with highly emotional issues, such as a school shooting, and being able to move on to international tax policy. Overall, the Oval Office environment is a mix of political and policy discussions. The conversation turns to the Affordable Care Act, the opposition to it, and a government mandate for health insurance, which was originally from a conservative think tank called Heritage. Jason talks about some of the controversial points from both Republicans and Democrats, including costs, what and who should be covered, and defining sharing.  Politics played a significant role in the creation and implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Practical Experience in Policy Making Jason discusses his economic research and his practical experience in policy making. He focuses on tax reform, sustainability of deficits, and inflation sources, which he worked on in government. Jason shares his views on tariffs. He also discusses the need for cities like San Francisco and New York to address housing issues, arguing that there isn't enough supply of housing due to restrictions on building. He talks about expanding housing vouchers for low-income households and expanding housing voucher programs to serve everyone. Jason believes that for some people, subsidies are needed, but for most people, cheaper housing is needed, requiring more housing. He also discusses the impact of immigration on inflation and prices is a significant economic issue, as immigrants are the labor force that contributes ideas, innovations, productivity, and start businesses. He moves on to the Chips Act, which aims to increase manufacturing of advanced microchips in the US, and has been a legitimate goal, with manufacturing subsidies of $39 billion.  Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Jason shares his favorite classes and professors at Harvard, including Ec 10, which was taught by Marty Feldstein, who became a mentor and friend. He also mentions Professor Jeffrey Williamson's class on economic history, which he still thinks about to this day.  Timestamps: 02:44: Experience Working for President Obama  09:24: Policy Influence and Decision-Making 15:24: Advice to Presidential Candidates and Policy Disagreements  22:11: Oval Office Meetings and Policy Discussions  27:07: Return to Harvard and Teaching  32:18: Policy-Oriented Research and Personal Life 33:49: Quick Takes on Policy Areas  36:50: Reactions to the CHIPS Act and Personal Interests  39:10: Reflections on Harvard and Final Thoughts    Featured Non-profit This episode's featured non-profit is the Committee to Protect Journalists recommended by Peter Lattman who reports: “Hi. Former Governor, Congressman, and Presidential Candidate Mark Sanford joins me this week to discuss resilience, leadership, and lessons from his dynamic political journey. A prominent Republican figure, Sanford rose to national attention in 1994 as South Carolina's Congressman, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most fiscally conservative members of Congress. He later served two terms as Governor, implementing policies aimed at improving the state's business climate and job prospects. However, his career faced a turning point in 2009 due to a widely publicized affair that led to the end of his marriage and seemingly his political future. In a remarkable comeback, Sanford reclaimed his congressional seat in 2013 and became one of President Trump's few vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately led to his 2018 primary defeat. In his memoir, Two Roads Diverged, Sanford reflects on the defining moments of his public life, sharing candid insights on his mistakes, growth, and the lessons learned in maintaining integrity even when it's challenging. Sanford's story is a compelling look at resilience, redemption, and the complexity of American politics._______________________More about Mark SanfordSanford burst onto the national stage in 1994 when he was elected to represent South Carolina's 1st congressional district. A fiscally conservative Republican, Sanford quickly gained a reputation as Congress's most fiscally conservative member, known for his unwavering commitment to reducing government spending. His political star continued to rise as he was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving two terms and accomplishing a long list of firsts designed to better people's lives and make the state more inviting for businesses and entrepreneurs. However, Sanford's life took a major turn in his sixth year as Governor. In 2009, a well-chronicled affair brought about the collapse of his 20-year marriage and what seemed to be the end of his political career. Yet, in a remarkable display of political resilience, Sanford made a comeback in 2013, winning a special election to reclaim his old congressional seat and serving until 2019.During his second stint in Congress, Sanford became known as one of President Trump's most vocal Republican critics, a stance that ultimately contributed to his primary defeat in 2018. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Sanford briefly threw his hat into the ring for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination, positioning himself as a voice for fiscal responsibility.Discover more about Mark Sanford at https://www.marksanford.com/_______________________Connect with Whitney McDuffAttribution Link: Whitney's Website Attribution Link: The Dames Group Attribution Link: Standing Ovation Society –––––––––––––––––––––––––––Track: Welcome — Declan DP [Audio Library Release]Music provided by Audio Library PlusWatch: • Welcome — Declan DP | Free Background... And when he was reading I felt really joyful.” Like thousands of other new believers, she received an audio Bible that allowed her to hear God's Word despite her inability to read it. In the face of her family's threats of abandonment and persecution, she trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized. Dr. James Dobson shares his presidential voting guide In light of tomorrow's presidential election, Dr. James Dobson, host of Family Talk heard on 1,300 radio stations, put together a compelling presidential voting guide. In announcing this guide, he wrote, “We are living in a time of great moral divide. Unless Christians engage in the upcoming election, this beloved land of liberty, which has been a beacon of hope to the world through the centuries, may become a distant memory that future generations will only read about in history books. It saddens me to think that this could be the fate of our children and grandchildren. “I pray for the emergence of Americans who will come out of their hiding places to let their voices be heard on Election Day, November 5th.” Get Dr. Dobson's voter's guide in our transcript at www.TheWorldview.com.  And please share it widely on social media! Trump: Liz Cheney is “a radical war hawk” On October 31st, Donald Trump talked with Tucker Carlson for 90 minutes in Glendale, Arizona about his candidacy. He took issue with former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who has endorsed Kamala Harris, for being a war hawk. TRUMP:  “The reason she couldn't stand me is that she always wanted to go to war with people I don't want to go to war. She wanted to go she wanted to stay in Syria. I took them out. She wanted to stay in Iraq. I took them out. I mean, if it were up to her, we'd be in 50 different countries. Number one, it's very dangerous. Number two, a lot of people get killed. And number three, I mean, it's very, very expensive. We spent $9 trillion bombing the Middle East. And what did we get? Other than lots of dead people, including our people, we got nothing.” Trump emphasized that Liz Cheney liked to sound tough in her former ivory tower when sending American soldiers to unnecessary wars. TRUMP: “She's a radical war hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let's see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face. You know, they're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington. Let's send, let's send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.” Kamala Harris, the Democratic Presidential nominee, claimed that Trump's rhetoric was violent. HARRIS: “He has increased his violent rhetoric, Donald Trump has, about political opponents and in great detail. Suggested rifles should be trained on former representative Liz Cheney. This must be disqualifying anyone who wants to be president of the United States who uses that kind of violent rhetoric is clearly disqualified and unqualified to be president.” Cardinal urges Catholics to vote for most pro-life presidential candidate On October 31st, EWTN anchor Raymond Orroyo interviewed U.S. Cardinal Raymond Burke about the moral obligation for Catholics to vote, reports LifeSiteNews.com. ARROYO:  “Cardinal Burke, you recently posted moral questions regarding voting on your website. It's a guide for Catholics voting in the U.S. election next week. And you write this. ‘For Catholics, as for all men and women of good will, the question is, in fulfilling our civic duty to vote, how can we be obedient to the law of God written upon our hearts in the present situation of deplorable moral, and therefore cultural, decline and decay.' “In your guide, you emphasize human life, marriage, family, religious freedom as the pre-eminent issues for the common good for Catholics to consider as they go into the voting place. How and why should Catholics prioritize those above party allegiance or personality which seems to govern a lot of the vote today?” BURKE:  “We are servants of God, first of all, and being good servants of God, then we are good servants to our country. And if we don't obey God's law, then we're not going to serve well our country.  And so, these three goods -- human life from its inception to natural death, safeguarding the integrity of marriage and the family, and religious freedom, are written on the human heart. That's how God made us, inscribed His law on our hearts. “We must be obedient to that law. And in that obedience, we serve not only our own good, but the good of our neighbor, the good of the nation. And so, it's as simple as that.” Psalm 19:7-11 says, “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever.” Dog rescued from floating shopping cart in canal And finally, a 10-year-old dog was rescued after it was found floating down an Arizona canal on a submerged shopping cart, reports the Good News Network. No one knows how long it was stranded, After passersby alerted the Humane Society, an emergency animal medical technician and some firemen were able to save it. Upon examination by a vet, they discovered it only sustained minor injuries. After news reports of the dog trauma, the dog named Dorothea has since found a new home and is now living with a family in Youngtown, Arizona. High and broad-based tariffs would raise prices which would have knock-on effects on monetary policy, growth, and government deficits. Another difference is the promise of large-scale deportations. This would adversely affect the number of workers available for many industries – for example, a shortfall in construction workers would contribute to higher housing prices. I voted on Halloween which is a tradition of mine because the Democratic and Republican candidates frighten me. In 2020 I interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and Libertarian presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen and found them to both be smart, capable and having more good ideas and solutions to the country's problems than the 2 party system offered then and now. Please vote and consider voting 3rd party. Now more than ever we need more choices and voices. Mark interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and they had an interesting discussion about ballot access for third parties, how Howie was the first candidate to propose a Green New Deal, what he would do to fight the Covid pandemic and how he feels Trump and BIden have let us down in this crisis. He has a plan to eliminate fossil fuels in 10 years, cut military spending and get troops out of the middle east, have Medicare for All and lays out the similarities and differences between himself and Bernie Sanders. Whether you agree or disagree with him, he has a substantive and different point of view which is worth a listen and voting consideration. Mark got to interview Libertarian candidate for President Jo Jorgensen and asked her tough questions about health care, the coronavirus, climate change, foreign policy, abortion and more. Dr. Jorgensen being a former teacher rapped Mark across the knuckles a couple of time and presented an alternative to the 2 party system as well as a sense of humor.

Getting ready for election night 2024? Excited to hear presidential candidates give victory and concession speeches? First, refresh your memory with top lines from speeches in years past! Like Democrat Jimmy Carter losing in 1980 … “I promised you four years ago that I would never lie to you. So, I can't stand here tonight and say it doesn't hurt. The people of the United States have made their choice, and, of course, I accept that decision but, I have to admit, not with the same enthusiasm that I accepted the decision four years ago.” And Republican George Bush winning in 1988 … “A campaign is a disagreement, and disagreements divide, but an election is a decision, and decisions clear the way for harmony and peace, and I mean to be a president of all the people, and I want to work for the hopes and interests, not only of my supporters, but of the governor's and of those who didn't vote at all.” • What are the top lines or phrases presidential candidates have said in their victory and concession speeches? • When was the last time those speeches were given on the day America voted? • What was the only time both candidates spoke in the same city – and where was that? • And … what year did both candidates speak outdoors? On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre flatly denied Biden ever called Trump supporters garbage. Meanwhile, members of the media have attempted to cover for Biden—with NBC's Kelly O'Donnell even referring to the gaffe as a symptom of the president's lifelong battle with stuttering. 3:40pm- Reacting to President Joe Biden's claim that Donald Trump supporters are “garbage,” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he would never insult any American for supporting a presidential candidate. 4:05pm- Big Legal Win in Bucks County. Marc Levy of the Associated Press writes: “A Pennsylvania judge on Wednesday sided with Donald Trump's campaign and agreed to extend an in-person voting option in Bucks County, where long lines on the final day led to complaints voters were being disenfranchised by an unprepared election office. Judge Jeffrey Trauger said in a one-page order that Bucks County voters who want to apply for an early mail ballot now have until Friday at 5 p.m. The Trump campaign's lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday morning, comes amid a flurry of litigation and complaints over voting in a battleground state that is expected to play a central role in helping select the next president in 2024's election.” You can read more here: https://6abc.com/trump-campaign-sues-pennsylvanias-bucks-county-board-elections-claims-turned-away-voters/15488664/ 4:10pm- Rich gets distracted—he starts by complaining about the YouTube graphic making him look fat, but the conversation quickly turns to making homemade mozzarella cheese AND Matt and Justin both having fake girlfriends. 4:20pm- Are Polls Undercounting Kamala Harris? CNN Senior Political Analyst Harry Enten explained that after undercounting Donald Trump's support in the 2016 and 2020 election, pollsters may be overcorrecting in 2024. Enten notes that no party has been undercounted three presidential elections in a row over the last 50+ years—so, could Harris be doing much better than the data suggests? 4:45pm- Listener Mike calls into the show and explains that he voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016—but he's supporting Donald Trump in 2024. 5:00pm- Tulsi Gabbard—2020 Presidential Candidate & former U.S. Congresswoman—joins The Rich Zeoli Show en route to Bedford, Pennsylvania for a veterans town hall event with vice presidential candidate J.D.
