13. Stop Unnecessary Suffering by Learning the Difference Between Clean and Dirty Pain

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional,” or so the trusty old saying goes. But wait, is that actually right? The definition of suffering is simply “undergoing pain or hardship.” And if you’re showing up to life (“in the arena” as Brene Brown often talks about) you’re gonna get your butt kicked by pain once in a while. Pain is the flip side to the exhilarating joys and deep love of a truthful life. It’s rough, but we’re supposed to feel it. But where is the line between the pain of a fully experienced life, and unnecessary suffering? How do we know if we’re spinning in rumination versus recognizing difficult circumstances? Allow me to introduce you to the concept of “clean and dirty pain” – and how it can change your life. Turns out that not all suffering is created equal, and we humans have the ability to experience “clean” pain (the truthful reality of difficulties in life) and stop suffering from “dirty” pain (a pain that our beautiful brains bring on unnecessarily - a dirty pain that inhibits us from experiencing joy, peace, and connection.) Hey loves, Things are changing! The podcast is going through a major transition and I can’t wait to tell you about it! (This might also be known as podcast puberty – hopefully minus the zits.) This show started under the premise of helping you (my dear listener) answer the question “what should I do with my life?” But even with that as the umbrella, at the end of the day my goal was to help you live with more purpose. The ultimate goal was to help you get to the end of your life and KNOW that you lived it the way you wanted to – that you played big, took risks, spread your wings, and as Henry David Thoreau put it, “sucked all the marrow” out of life. But lately I’ve realized that something was missing – a foundation that anyone needs to live with purpose - a feeling of freedom. The tools to becoming unencumbered by the limiting beliefs that are keeping you small, telling you what you’re allowed (and not allowed) and basically informing every decision you make (that equate to your life.) In order for you to live your biggest and juiciest life, you need to be free from the unseen cage. And you guessed it, that’s TOTALLY what we’re doing here now – stay tuned. Calling all wild and free spirits: If you’ve been drawn to follow your fire, I KNOW that you have a soul call to tap into a bigger purpose, unleash your confidence, and walk in truth. You long to create a life that is TRULY lived, wild, untamed, yet also fulfilling, balanced, and fun. I know that you’ve been brought here on purpose and that the longing inside of your soul is no accident - it’s a potential. And let’s take back that word potential, shall we? 8. When Grief is Transformed: Cindi Soliz - Mother, Love Warrior, Believer in Magic

“Love is the song over the wrong.” (Vanessa Dawn Soliz) In the second installment of the short term “resilience” series, I interview mother, love warrior, and all-around incredible human, Cindi Soliz. Cindi is the mother of five kids, one of whom was my childhood friend Vanessa Dawn Soliz, an insightful and beautiful person who died at the age of twenty in a motorcycle accident. Losing a child is arguably one of the most difficult things one could experience, but Cindi’s story is not just one of pain, loss, and unending grief - it’s also a story of transformation, beauty, and the deep love of life that’s only possible when life’s preciousness is accepted alongside the risk. Way more than I realized at the start of this interview. When I sought out to interview a paranormal investigator, I just thought it would be cool to have a Friday the 13th themed episode. I’d been feeling a bit burnt out and thought it would be fun to talk to someone with a VERY fringe interest (ghosts) - even if I don’t personally believe in them. (Or do I? It really depends on the day.) I was connected with investigator Paul Dale Roberts and I figured I’d ask him for a few scary stories, hear about what must be an out-of-the-ordinary journey, and be on my merry little life coach way. What I DIDN’T expect was to be connected with someone who has lived a life beyond all “normal” expectations. I didn’t expect to find that Paul really loves his OTHER (government) job too - or that he’s held a litany of titles and roles that sound more like he’s lived ten lives than one: police officer, veteran, author, fire fighter, entertainer, journalist, speaker, animal rescuer...and these roles are only the tip of the Paul iceberg. While we start in the present-day paranormal, we visit a variety of helpful topics on our winding journey, such as: What to do when a career you worked hard for doesn’t work out How to pay bills and also live a creative life of passion and adventure How to deal with criticism and other people’s opinions How to create the life you want - rather than waiting for opportunity to knock How to live in a way that reverberates good after you’re gone Oh, and we totally had a paranormal event on our call. Don’t believe me? Well I’m a skeptic too, but listen for yourself - and you be the judge. In this week of a full moon, recession, no toilet paper, and the threat of a dangerous pandemic the world over, there’s a lot that we humans have to be tense over. But in the midst of all that feels wrong and scary, I offer you this interview as an unexpected balm. Paul Dale Roberts and his earnest story of being true to himself lifted my dampened spirits, and I’m guessing that they’ll lift yours too.
