As we near the end of summer, the Storytelling Breakdown team decided it was time for Movie Share II: Electric Boogaloo. The rotation from last time has been reversed. Stephen has Ben, exploring more works of Hayao Miyazaki with Howl's Moving Castle. Ben has Larissa, and the two opened the episode with a trip back to the 1970's with Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. Larissa has Caleb, and she put Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself on his radar. Caleb has Stephen, who put on his headphones and sat down for Live, Die, Rep… wait, Edge of Tomorrow. In The Lord of the Rings: The Scenes of Power our team begins our journey into The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. From Glamdring to an impassable labyrinth of razor-sharp rocks, the conversation starts around the 01:24:03 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode of the podcast, the crew has “magic on the mind,” and Elisabeth, Lindsay, and David dig into magic in a variety of forms. Their banter covers a range of topics including recent magical performances in Milwaukee, the magic of physics and great guacamole, the hypothetical burden of reading minds, the possible UFO hotspot where Elisabeth was raised, and David's freaky premonition.    Luka joins the crew for an interview beginning around 18:30. He starts the conversation off by talking about how he got into magic. Leaning into a childhood summer tradition of going to the library, he took to reading books on magic tricks. After college, Luka worked as a video editor and a banker. Then, in his mid-twenties, he decided to take a risk and jump into working in magic full-time. After building up a small repertoire of gigs and making connections, Luka joined a group magic show in Branson, Missouri. Upon returning to Milwaukee several years later, he became a resident performer at the Safe House and developed his show “Deceptions,” which he launched in 2021.    In the conversation, Luka reflects on how he brands himself as a “deception artist” rather than a magician for kids. He also highlights the ways in which magic is an art form— as long as the magician portrays and conducts themselves as an artist. Luka compares the art of magic to the art of making and performing music. It involves writing, workshopping, acting, comedy, and more. But according to Luka, there is no direct path to get into magic—rather, “magic finds you.”   Lastly, as the “magician of arts and culture” Luka amazes David by, almost verbatim, invoking the same imaginary policy as the poet laureate and previous ITP guest Dasha Kelly Hamilton.   You can find info about Luka's shows at https://www.deceptionsmke.com/ (Deceptions) and https://www.safe-house.com/ (SafeHouse)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_Lux (Son Lux)  https://a24films.com/films/everything-everywhere-all-at-once (Everything Everywhere All at Once)  https://rafiqbhatia.com/ (Rafiq Bhatia)   https://www.cactusclubmilwaukee.com/ (Cactus Club)  https://www.bayviewneighborhood.org/chill-on-the-hill (Chill on the Hill)   https://tosatonight.com/ (Tosa Tonight)  https://www.themcouleeboys.com/ (Them Coulee Boys)  https://www.mso.org/ (Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra)  https://www.sailingcenter.org/ (Milwaukee Community Sailing Center)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqwb4HIrORM (The “Magic” or Physics of Sailing)  https://www.amazon.com/Encounter-Buff-Ledge-Case-History/dp/0929343603 (Encounter at Buff Ledge)  https://tinyrituals.co/blogs/tiny-rituals/obsidian-meaning-healing-properties-everyday-uses (Black Obsidian)  https://www.hulu.com/movie/derek-delgaudios-in-of-itself-19b9d405-40b2-483e-8e1f-e25fe10c7299 (In & Of Itself)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Houdini (Harry Houdini)  https://davidblaine.com/ (David Blaine)  https://www.davidcopperfield.com/html/ (David Copperfield)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Valentino (The Masked Magician)   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Poets_Society (Dead Poets Society)

It's tough to get noticed in Hollywood, and today's guest made a career by helping others do just that. She was one of the entertainment industry's most respected and sought-after media and publicity strategists, ran her own talent management firm (B. Company), and now she works with Late Show legend, Stephen Colbert… as president of his production company Spartina. Carrie inspires me and so many other women by being a kind leader in a tough industry, her dedication to her team, and her 1.8 second-response time to text messages. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in business for years, there's something here for you. So grab a cup of tea, buckle up and tune in!In this episode, we discussFinding the confidence to start your own thing in the entertainment industry - TWICE!Handling comparative pressure, facing down obstacles and refusing to apologize for who you are.Balancing high demands on your time while finding time to live a lifeHer genius method to get to inbox zero-ish (I've tried it, it works!)The women that have lifted HER up.This episode at a glance:[08:23] What helped Carrie take off on her own: she wanted to contribute to the choices that her clients were making, not just enhance the work they were already doing. And it just took one client, America Ferrara, to say “I see you as that” to give her the confidence to *be* that.[20:45] The main reason Carrie said YES to running Stephen and Evelyn Colbert's production company, Spartina: If that YES is loud, if something magnetic is pulling you, that's telling.[31:08] Carrie's empowering leadership style: she taps into people's strengths and celebrates the things her team can do that she can't. If you have a team of clones, you won't succeed. [44:05] Carrie was surrounded by strong female role models, starting with her mom, author and speaker Marcia Byalick. She learned from great women in her industry like Kelly Bush Novak, Lesley Dart, Lois Smith, and Pat Kingsley.[58:03] What's on Carrie's Times Square billboard: “There's always a ticket”. There's a way around any challenge. Resources and links:Check out The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and The Colbert ReportWatch “In and Of Itself” on HULUID PR and Kelly Bush NovakYou may also like: Episode #008 with Nicole Marra: Leaving the “Perfect” Job so you can Fly Even HigherUnderstanding your team's behavioral stylesMore about the “My Good Woman” podcastMy Good Woman is a podcast for bold female leaders, hosted by me, Dawn Andrews! The number one relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself. It influences how you experience and engage every other relationship be it with people, situations, or resources. Interestingly though, your relationship with yourself is also built by all your other relationships. Most of the dynamics of your self-relationship happen in the background of your mind, unconsciously influencing what you notice around you, how you feel about what you notice, and how you then show up to those things. One step to feeling more in control of your life is to bring those self-relationship dynamics to consciousness and make active choices in how you develop this super important relationship. In this episode of Unlimited, I'm diving into some tools to unlock awareness and taking charge of your relationship with yourself. Some of what I'll cover in this episode include:Identifying obstacles like toxic individualism and comparisonitisThe stories you tell about who you areLearning about yourself through othersIdentifying actions to retrain your brainThe people you want on your support team  Thank you for listening! Chuck wonders about the term "Montezuma's Revenge" and its origins, which leads to a discussion about legacy - is it better to be known for something gross or forgotten? Chuck pushes me on my fictional legacy. We read some listener emails, one of which forces us to dive into our knowledge of pop-punk songs and which ones we love. We talk about the recent weather event in Texas and how they affected our Lone Star Pals. Chuck opens up about the dynamic relationship between receiving public praise and dealing with private failures and that struggle. We then discuss the movie "Thunder Road," and how we feel about Jim Cummings. I tell Chuck all about the listener-recommended show Joe Pera Talks With You and how much I enjoyed it. I also mention Derek Delgaudio's In and Of Itself, but can't talk too much about it without spoiling things for Chuck. We then discuss the trailer for the new Mortal Kombat movie and our experiences with the Mortal Kombat franchise. From there, it's video game news - Tony Hawk coming to the Switch, a new documentary series about Nintendo - a quick step away to discuss Disney Plus' Parental Controls. We then discuss the upcoming documentary "Murder Among The Mormons" before closing with a discussion about a TV show based on the Playstation series of "Twisted Metal" games. - Brad MP3 Download

Directing Derek DelGaudio's In & Of Itself brought Oz back to his creative anarchist roots. It's hard to put Frank Oz and Derek Delgaudio's In & Of Itself into words. That's how they wanted it. It's something that must be seen to be... not believed? We keep the interview spoiler-free, diving into what inspired this anarchy, what moved Oz and DelGaudio to build something new, and break things in the process. After I switched off my recorder and took in all Oz and DelGaudio shared, I walked into the other room to find my children watching... "The Muppets" (which Oz helped create and found). It served as a reminder that Frank Oz's drive to create things with a purpose and risk failure by being different, results in a legacy and an impact that echoes for generations. We are motivated to create things for a variety of reasons. Frank Oz and Derek DelGaudio were motivated by some of the best reasons. Oz said working with DelGaudio reminded him of the early early days with Jim Henson when they were just trying things. Breaking things. Discovering things.  More than success, the highlight is always concocting something new. There is no guarantee that you can find the type of success Oz and DelGaudio have. But there is a guarantee that you can find the same joy if you pursue things the way they did. Let their anarchy guide us all to taking chances, evading definitions, and breaking molds. "When people ask me how to describe the work or describe myself, I always just start by saying artist," says Glenn Kaino. "Everything stems from the art practice." The visionary American conceptual artist's work has led him to become an off-Broadway producer, a performer, a magician, a social activist and the technological innovator who helped legalize the music download platform Napster.  A "horrible" trip to an art fair in 2008 caused Kaino to close his studio for a year, unhappy with "how much influence an overall, overriding economic system" was having on art making. He decided instead to "go hang out with a bunch of magicians and see what happens—because they know something about believing".  Magic is "why we do what we do, as artists", says Kaino, who went on to co-produce the off-Broadway magic show "In and Of Itself"—which is smashing box office records. Both magic and art are about belief for Kaino, who says: "Belief has always been at the core of the practice; it's really belief about the power of art." One of his long-term collaborations is with the Olympian Tommie Smith, who famously accepted the gold medal for the 200m race in 1968 with his fist held aloft, in solidarity with the fight for human rights. "We, as beneficiaries of his sacrifice, can create systems that pay homage to—and also pay—him," Kaino says. "The art I know actually has tangible change, in that it makes people think in different ways or makes people engage in different ideas." During today's podcast, which was recorded in Los Angeles with Matthew Thompson (vice president of AAP in Los Angeles) and our host Charlotte Burns, Kaino talks about subjects as diverse as Jurassic Park; diversity in tech; partnering with actor and activist Jesse Williams; his interest in "connecting ecosystems that don't normally have a chance to meet"; upcoming projects—and much more.  Tune in today.
