Live Audio Play Reading of ADULTS, a New Play by Maizy Broderick Scarpa Produced by Sandcastle Theater Company Directed by Lana Richards Stage Management & Production Support by Ariella Wolfe, and J. Lyn Monks CAST MAGGIE: Kathleen A. Poe JO: Sarah Palmero STAGE DIRECTIONS: Sara Curtis ABOUT THE PLAY In the wake of their mother's death, two middle-aged sisters navigate feelings, friendship, and funeral logistics. In real-time and through flashbacks, the sisters grapple with their relationship with each other, their larger-than-life mother, and themselves. Will the bond that's tethered them since childhood survive the seismic shift? CONTENT WARNING PG13; mature themes, reference to death of a parent PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE We aren't very comfortable acknowledging grief in American culture, nor do we have many spaces that hold the complexity of familial relationships. I hope that ADULTS creates a communal moment of celebration; a place to honor the absurdity, pain, insight, connection, humor, and contradictions of moving through time with people whose love supports, chafes, and reminds us who we are. *If something in this play feels particularly familiar, consider telling someone near you after listening...and inviting them to share their experience in return. – Maizy Broderick Scarpa Learn more about the playwright: http://www.maizyscarpa.com/about.html DIRECTOR'S NOTE In an early conversation, Maizy talked about how ADULTS is in some ways an inverse of the traditional kitchen sink play, where there is an appearance of a happy family and life, but when you look closely there is conflict and darkness and bad-feeling. Instead, the circumstances of ADULTS are very grave, but at its core are two characters who love each other very much. And it's through that love and trust they are able to work through those challenges of life. I'm excited to share the characters and the relationship at the heart of this piece. – Lana Richards SPECIAL THANKS Congregation Bet Haverim, Polly Klaas Community Theater, UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance, and Sacramento City College Music Department. Live Audio Play Reading of The Yellow Line, a New Play by Caitlin Gurtner Produced by Sandcastle Theater Company Directed by Zouapa Lor Stage Management & Production Support by Ariella Wolfe, and J. Lyn Monks CAST JORDAN: Shoana T. Hunt SAWYER: Sarah Palmero CHRIS: Margarita Jamero STAGE DIRECTIONS: Caitlin Gurtner ABOUT THE PLAY Jordan faces the line between reality and delusion, questioning the liminal space they live in while interacting with Sawyer and Chris. A choice has to be made under the differing opinions of the two as Jordan explores what it means to exist under a starry night sky in a society that doesn't quite understand. CONTENT WARNING PG13; mature language, depiction of a mental health crisis PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE One of the reasons playwriting is unique and wonderful is that it's the first step in a big process. This workshop is the moment where the rest of the team joins, and you see what happens when your play is given to the people who can do something amazing with it. This play was a product of my tired and frustrated brain as I neared the end of my college career. It was a way for me to talk about things that I thought only made sense to me. Now, bringing this story to others, seeing them resonate with the characters, is both mind boggling and beautifully comforting. – Caitlin Gurtner Learn more: www.sandcastletheaterco.org/meet-the-team DIRECTOR'S NOTE I like the mental awareness of THE YELLOW LINE and how it plays with somewhat abstract ideas about being a person, existing, and the liminal space. I'm excited about hearing the contrasting characters and how they interact with one another coming to life. – Zouapa Lor SPECIAL THANKS Congregation Bet Haverim, Polly Klaas Community Theater, UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. Live Audio Play Reading of Hottest Church Dads, a New Play by Schaeffer Nelson Produced by Sandcastle Theater Company Directed by Caitlin Gurtner Stage Management & Production Support by Ariella Wolfe, and J. Lyn Monks CAST JASON: Cody Johnson BRYAN: Fernando Monjaraz JASON'S DAD: Matt Standley STAGE DIRECTIONS: Schaeffer Nelson ABOUT THE PLAY Jason and Bryan—two Evangelical teenage boys in 2004 suburban Kansas—don't have much experience being gay. But they have opinions about which men at church are the hottest. And they have time on their hands. Until it runs out. CONTENT WARNING PG13; sexual references, reference to abuse, homophobia, “reparative/conversion” therapy PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE Writing this play was a chance to rewrite my late boyhood. Rather than isolation, what would it have been like to have had a gay friend? And a tiny, sort-of safe space to talk with that friend about the hot dads at church? Living long enough to look backwards and reimagine is a very lucky break. This script is me cashing in that luck, and praying for that same luck to reach queer and trans kids everywhere. – Schaeffer Nelson Learn more about the playwright: https://www.schaeffernelson.com/intro Hottest Church Dads Hunk Collage: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zfbod_fEzYzIdBNPsea4VbeNCxfMwYK6/view?usp=sharing DIRECTOR'S NOTE Hottest Church Dads is realistic. It's not sad, or doom and gloom. It doesn't lie about what life is like. I really appreciate the way it represents a lot of the humor that people in these situations have to run to in order to keep themselves sane. And I'm out here looking to support queer playwrights, at all times. – Caitlin Gurtner SPECIAL THANKS Heidi Wright & Custom Costumes, Grand Central Petaluma, Music To My Ears Graphics by Lynndhop Music by AurusMusic Sandcastle Theater Company is committed to nurturing and producing new plays, growing a broader theater community, and creating accessible opportunities for people to experience original stories.
