Today on the show, we welcome Q, Miguel, and Raven of Renegade Theater speaking about their April production of Reefer Madness. Renegade Theater Co. is a community-based theater company in Santa Cruz, CA. Renegade is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit that creates theatrical productions meant to challenge the standard expectations of theater. The show benefactor for Reefer Madness is The Last Prisoner Project. Gennevie "Q" Herbranson has served as the board president of Renegade Theater since its inception three years ago. She has been involved in theater in Santa Cruz since the summer of 2019, originally supporting her two kids in the youth theater scene.Miguel Reyna is beside himself to be directing his first production for his friends at Renegade Theater. He has been acting in and directing theater for the past 40 years and will likely never stop. His past 20 years have happened here in Santa Cruz County. Most recently, he's directed Stephen King's Misery at Actors Theatre. He's also directed The Thin Place for Actors' Theatre and The Humans for Mountain Community Theater, and co-produced Evil Dead The Musical at MCT.Raven Voorhees is a barista in the heart of Santa Cruz (Abbott Square) and enjoys creating art both on and off stage. Raven has an extensive theatrical resume and has been in both of Renegade's previous adult musicals, Heather's and Cabaret. Raven is the lead role of Jimmy in Reefer Madness. In this conversation, we explore themes of propaganda, rebellion, and control over youth, using humor as political satire in a time when history is repeating itself in more ways than one.

Matthew Socey chats with Dakota Jones, director of the upcoming production of Evil Dead: The Musical. Also, a tribute to actress Claudia Cardinale.
Så släck alla ljus, kom in i läskig stämning.

Ever wondered how Donald Trump's peculiar orange hue could be linked to time travel? Or how risqué literature could be hilariously compared to electronics and cheap wine? Join your favorite weirdos, Daniel and Dinasaurus, as we have a riot of a time with our multi-talented friend, Uncle Bobbo, exploring it all, and so much more. Our conversation whirls around Uncle Bobbo's passion for theater, and his humorous talent for distinguishing cryptids from, well... dicks. We tackle the mystery of time travel, the eccentricities of the game 'Only Up', and our very own version of Good Mythical Morning's SNEAK ATTACK game. Thought playwriting was all serious business? Think again! We dissect this art form, touching upon common mistakes, the impact of technology, and even witness an unplanned demonstration of the reverse wine claw!As laughter ensues, we delve into the darker side of theater, narrating the troubling story of Uncle Bobbo's father the Sex Pest. Yet, we never lose our humor as we dive into some racy literature discussions and even manage to lighten the mood with a lively debate on erotic literature. Wrapping up, we get a sneak peek into Bobbo's thrilling plans for his annual musical production and his upcoming horror convention, Shock-o-Con. Evil Dead the Musical, Stone Productions: It's a bloody good podcast. Fun times in the recording room today, as Jaymes and Courtney introduce us to the musical adaptation of one of the most iconic horror series ever created. Evil Dead the musical November 4th-6th “IT'S FREAKING AWESOME! THE SONGS WILL HAVE YOU ROLLING IN YOUR SEATS AND SCREAMING FOR MORE AND MORE BLOOD!” – Broadway World.com Evil Dead The Musical takes all the elements of the cult classic films, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness and combines them for one of the craziest, funniest, and bloodiest theatrical experiences of all time. Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It's all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day.
Is The Evil Dead just too intense and evil for you? What if the two movies were combined and sung to you in a tight little 90 minute format? What if you really like the word "bitch"? Due to this, spoilers are abundant and will not be talked around. Listen at your own risk!

Sharpen your chainsaws for the Bloody Adventure of Evil Dead the Musical. Regarded as one of the goriest film series ever created, Evil Dead would make its bold jump to Off-Broadway in 2006. With over-the-top musical numbers, a ton of alcohol and a splatter zone where audiences could get doused with blood, how couldn't it be a good time? But the question is... how could this have ever happened? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Not pictured: 15 entire Black Knight's worth of fake blood. SPOILERS FOR EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL. In this episode: Early on we talk about the particular energy and the unique complications of live shows. This is not the last time this will come up. Evil Dead is the only example of a musical we'll be discussing this summer where it's just part of a media phenomenon instead of being the primary text. This is the conversation that Fio was referencing on the podcast regarding Del Toro as a new showrunner for a theoretical Twilight Zone reboot. How it's impossible for this musical to exist in a vacuum. Minor point about how Ash is Bruce Campbell, he hasn't really had a chance (nor has anyone really made the attempt) to divorce him from that. Why "Do the Necronomicon" doesn't really work. We get into a brief discussion about weird things that are integral to characters that show up late in their narratives. The difficulty in suspending disbelief in horror and how it contrasts with the difficulty in suspending disbelief in musicals. THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: Ephemera from the notes and timestamps: BLOOD WEDDING ASIDE From Ian: I know you just mean “we have a long aside about Blood Wedding,” but I kind of want to read this as “BLOOD WEDDING ASIDE, THERE IS SOME CONTENT ABOUT THE EVIL DEAD MUSICAL ON THIS EPISODE, REALLY.” I spent like 20 minutes last episode talking about how much I love that REPO! is “for nobody” but when talking about extreme haunted houses, I'm ranting “WHO IS THIS FOR?” Fio makes an aside to NiN, drink. 100% taking credit for "Ole Billy Shats" Music: "This is My Design" - Ian Doherty | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | “What the Fuck Was That?” - Evil Dead: Original Broadway Cast Album | YouTube | Amazon | “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” - Evil Dead: Original Broadway Cast Album | YouTube | Amazon | “We Will Never Die” - Evil Dead: Original Broadway Cast Album | YouTube | Amazon | http://archive.org/download/AMOT094/AMOT094.mp3
Wait...wasn't there a scene like this in Little Shop? SPOILERS FOR REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. In this episode: The second installment of our Summer Musical Series! We discuss the 2008 adaptation of Repo! The Genetic Opera, including the cast, the plot, the music, and how it all churns into something that's both a mess and yet undeniably something we enjoy the hell out of. This is a flawed film, but there's a lot to love in here. Comparing the needs of musical theater to the needs of film in terms of pacing and shit. The third act is really where the seams begin to show in this flick. This film is unabashedly for itself, which is definitely something to be respected. Next time: Evil Dead: The Musical! THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: The Devil's Carnival is unfortunately not on Netflix. From Fio: Referring to something like Linkin Park imbuing in you a “deep vein of metal” might get some people calling us out on our metal credentials, haha. ...That's fair. Direct any complaints directly to me. - Ian Luigi's line is actually "I will shoot you in the FACE!" My mistake. More from Fio: Would you say that they needed to explain the use of Zydrate in a way that's quick, and clean, and pure? Booooo. - Ian Going back to talking about Infected, some of the lines in that are pretty awesome. Especially “Do you hear me, mother? Thanks for the disease.” I just really fucking love that line, hahaha. “Daddy's girl's a fucking monster” is also an amazing line, by the by. Sometimes, when people set out to make nightmare fuel...they absolutely succeed. SPOILERS FOR LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS & THE HUNGER GAMES. In this episode: The first episode in our Summer Musical Series! We discuss the classic Alan Menken/Howard Ashman musical Little Shop of Horrors and its movie adaptation, including the original black-and-white movie, the stage musical, and the many strong points and flaws of the 1986 Frank Oz movie. We get a bit into the broad tonal inconsistency that shows up in the film. We talk a bit about the prevalence of improvisation, specifically in the comedy genre, and the sort of slapdash energy that the movie has. Little Shop of Horrors as an oddly indelible part of the cultural landscape The dutch angles and other interesting film choices in the case of Little Shop Also the unique monster design of Audrey II, something you don't see a lot of in horror films, though that could just be due to a lack of really cool plant monsters. The danger of breaking the dream is much greater in the world of musicals than it is in other narratives. The interesting stylistic choice of putting the general tone of the lyrics at odds with more traditional 50s musical styles. Our actually interesting and worthwhile discussion of story vs presentation That wasn't sarcasm, by the way, I actually really dig this conversation. - Fio Here's our official schedule for the Summer Musical Series: Little Shop of Horrors: June 9th Repo! The Genetic Opera: June 23rd Evil Dead: The Musical: July 7th Sweeney Todd: July 21st Rocky Horror Picture Show: August 4th THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: We initially had some issues getting the episode uploaded, so keep an eye on our social media (Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook) for podcast updates in case there's a delay or rescheduling. Also, Ian's going to try to livetweet his rewatches of each musical movie, so keep an eye on those same places and his personal twitter (@idoherty451) to find out when that will be! I'm just realizing that maybe the reason I (Ian) like "Suppertime" so much is because it sounds particularly Pink Floyd-y. Notes from Fio: The use of the doo-wop singers as a greek chorus is an interesting choice Man, weird last-minute Hunger Games aside out of nowhere Music: "This is My Design" - Ian Doherty | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | "Prologue (Little Shop of Horrors)" - Little Shop Of Horrors (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) | YouTube | Amazon | "Suppertime" - Little Shop Of Horrors (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) | YouTube | Amazon | http://archive.org/download/AMOT092/AMOT092.mp3
